    October 29...

Hi everyone - just a quick update. Had my sleeve done on Thursday as scheduled. Essentially uneventful (ie. no complications). Hospital stay was terrific (big shout out to Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, CT and my surgeon, Dr. Aziz Benbrahim!!!). Came home Saturday morning and haven't had any need for painkillers. Progressed to puree stage this afternoon after a follow up with the doctor. All in all, this has been a much easier experience than I had imagined. We all have great anxiety, fears, concerns, etc., going in and now that I'm on the other side, at least for me, very few, if any, of those emotional concerns were justifed. I do need to make one funny note - that God awful pre-surgery Protein shake (I'll refrain from mentioning the brand) was more of a challenge for me then any of the post-operative stages thus far. The damn thing tasted like dirt with chocolate flavoring - I named them "dirt shakes." LOL. They strengthened my resolve... Lastly, my biggest challenge right now is not what I expected. My family is hugely supportive, my work is supportive, my friends are supportive. The hardest thing is getting 64 ounces of Water in each day. I was a water guzzler - sipping is really, really tough. Doctor says it gets easier, but I'll never be a guzzler again. Sip, sip, sip all day... As of tonight, I've lost 30 pounds since my pre-op weight. Cheers!
  2. I am 4 months post op from having gastric bypass surgery I have only lost 30 pounds I am trying so hard to loose weight. I am eating only protein and excising to the best of my ability. Why is the weight coming off so slowly?? I have to loose 100 pounds. Should I be worried???

Why am I losing weight so slowly

My weight loss has stopped. I was told I would 100 pounds over the course of a year after surgery. I have only lost 30 pounds I am eating fish, chicken, no carbs, for fats mayonnaise, salad dressing. I drink plenty of water. haven't been eating vegetables. eating a little bit of fruit. I am exercising krav maga and cardio 3 times a week.
  4. Hello soon to be fellow bandsters, I am 39 years old and have battled weight issues my entire life. I have always been the caretaker in my family, even as a child. So I never did what I needed to do to take care of myself. It has been diet after diet with success here and regain there. It has just been a miserable cycle...so in November I decided that enough is enough. I began to prepare for my journey. I started Zumba classes so that I could get into a regular exercise schedule then I started weaning off diet soda and changing my eating habits. I then decided in March that I would seek out a surgeon for the Lapband. I have now been approved and scheduled for May 16th. I am very excited to begin my new endeavor, but I also have some anxiety. I have been reading stories of folks who have had it and the majority seem to have had great success, the ones who have not seem to have not followed the band rules. Is that the general concensus? I welcome any tips you guys can give and I am looking forward to my new day
  5. Hi, I was banned July 5, 2007 and has lost about 40 lbs. I know I need a fill but has been layoff from my job and lost my insurance. Does anyone know where can I go for a fill take like payment plans. I know that sound silly, but I need help. I have not lost or gain in 6 months.:wink2:

    Night time reflux

Hi again ladies. I appreciate you reponse. I think I am going to go get some saline taken out. I have been having a little success with OTC meds as well, but it still isnt quite cutting it. I am nervous to get some out because I am able to eat and drink now but have been maintaining my weight. I feel safe where I am at with weight and the nutrition standpoint for the baby, so my nerves are on edge about getting some out because of this reflux. I am very fearful of my weight starting to climb after I do it, and I do not mean just baby weight, I am petrified of starting to add back the "extra". Anyone else going through this?
  7. I am a 38 y/o male with a BMI of 40 with sleep apnea, 5 knee surgeries, and Reflux (at least my doc said my upper GI showed that, I did not know) I have went throught the 6 month diet, psych, etc. at a relaxed pace over a course of a year. My wife was not supportive at first (did not think I needed it)but now is supportive of my decision ( i now weigh 280 I graduated high school at 145). I went through considerable obstacles(time and financial) to make sure I was doing the right thing. Was at peace with my decision until two days ago and have started to re-think my surgery. I have tried numerous diets and programs and have lost weight before but did not mantain. My concerns are below any insight or opinion you could give me would be appreciated it, even if you have to call me a wuss. 1. Since this surgery has only been in the U.S since 1999 who is to say I won't have to have a future revision since I am only 38. I was clear with my doc when I told him I wanted to do surgery once(he agreed). Who is to say that band won't erode in ten to fifteen years 2. Will I be able to function at social and family gatherings and fit in at meals etc in the future. I am concerned about being on a business trip and not being able to drink a beer, or eat a steak with a future employer etc.
  8. I am in the same boat. I have not told anyone but my husband, son and best friend. I don't want to hear the negative comments people make. I have lost weight many times. Keeping it off is another problem. I am sure we all have experienced this. Otherwise we would not have sought out alternatives to keeping it off. I want to be healthy. I am so tired of being fat. I admit it. I am fat. I got myself here and I want to do something about it. I have to please no one but me. I choose not to share all the details with others. It is truly a personal decision to do this surgery and I have made my choice. I do not to be made to feel bad or guilty. I have already felt those things about my weight. I have already heard remarks from others about my weight. Yes I am responsible for my body, good and bad. I know this will be hard. If if was easy, we would all be skinny. How many diets have I tried and failed? How many miles have I walked, how many trips to the gym have I made? How many times have I said "no thank you" when offered food? I am tired of trying and seeing very minimal results or no results. I did supervised weight programs before. Results yes. Good results? No Keep it off? No. I am not giving up by doing surgery. I am progressing to the next level. This is going to lower my blood pressure, control my triglycerides, control my blood sugar. I am using this as a tool just as I would use the treadmill at the gym. Good luck to you with your surgery and listen to yourself and no one else.

    6 month dr supervised diet

I had to do a 6 month program - I gained 10 lbs but I do have an underlying issue so I'm not to concerned. It's not like I gained another 50lbs. Good luck and it goes by faster then you think!
  10. Every Dr. and every insurance company is different, so you need to get specifics from whomever you are working with for your surgery. That said, my insurance company uses the BMI recorded on the first visit, whether it was with the surgeon, the nutritionist or anyone else on their team. The starting BMI is the one used for qualification. As for weight loss pre-op, again, it depends. Some insurance companies and Drs. need to see you can stick to a diet and be successful at it. I was told that I could lose weight (it wasn't mandatory) or maintain, but I couldn't gain weight. Some of the people in my nutrition classes had a certain amount of weight they had to lose pre-op. Keep reading these boards and use the search function but be warned, you will find a million different answers for every question you have. Good luck! kagead

    pre-op clearances

This is my experience too...I have been busy doing tons of tests, evaluations, and specialist visits, I'm assuming the insurance will cover all of them...since my insurance covers weight loss surgery. I have not even had my consultation with surgeon yet...My understanding is that once your primary gives the referral to bariatric program, that's enough to get the ball rolling...and for these visits & tests, they have only collected my co-pay.
  12. hi, this isnt brought up as a criticism of anyone. it happens to unbanded people in fact it is why i want one in part, regaining weight. hitting your goal, something in your life changes and we start gaining again. what surprises me is reading about people who are banded that get an unfill and report gaining quickly 20-30 lbs or more. the apprehension i have a week or so out from getting my band is ridiculous, i'm not only afraid i'll overeat and damage the band but the really disturbing thought is i'll miss being able to over eat. i should mention the flip side of that thought is liberating, being free of that sick feeling and life revolving around food. so, with the band do habits really change, do some of us too easily revert to overeating when restriction is removed or is there a long term change to metabolism that results in weight gain if we return to eating normal amount of calories?
  13. Anyone in San Diego interested in setting up a thread to encourage each other to train for the Carlsbad Marathon or Half Marathon in January? Here's a link if you want more information: Home Page I'd like to train for the half marathon, but would love to have a group of others who are losing weight and getting healthy and have the same goal. It can be all online or we can meet for training sessions when it makes sense. Thanks! Susan

    I'm not losing any weight!!!!

Take a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll. (Your stomach) Wrap it in a pound of fatty bacon. (The residual fat-pad around your stomach) Tie a balloon around the bacon and inflate it. (The lap-band) "Melt" a little of the bacon away underneath that balloon. (Lose weight) That is exactly what happens when the residual fat-pad melts and loosens up the band. If a person loses even a few ounces underneath the band, it's going to get loose and need a fill. Graphic, but REAL EASY to visualize, isn't it?
  15. Well, it was decided that I am at that place between yellow and green, but not quite green yet, so a small fill of .5 cc. Liquids are staying down with small sips and I am feeling pretty good. We shall see what tomorrow brings. I guess I am so conditioned from my other diet days that I should be losing more weight that I was waiting to get scolded for only losing 4 pounds in the last four weeks. It is a very new approach when you are told to keep up the good work instead!

    Can only eat a little

I am almost 2 yrs out. It does get better. Take it slow and enjoy. Do not let your brain control you. Right now your stomach and brain are not communicating. That will come back in time. Heal first, and again enjoy the weight falling off. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Hi y'all... I had a fill a 3 weeks ago and boy can I feel it. I can barley eat anything. Maybe a 1/2 of food and I'm full and I get the hiccups. I drink Water all day long and make good food choices. Here's the thing....I haven't lost a damn pound in 2 weeks. I'm so frustrated and don't understand how this is at all possibe. This is the worst i've felt since I had the surgery 8 months ago. I'm stressing about this day and night. I called my doc and they said they'd like to see me for an apt and if i'm doing eveything I say I am I should be loosing weight. So anyone out there been through this? Why am I not dropping the pounds and what do I need to change? Please help I feel like a failure. :help:

    Harder Work Outs

That's really a good question for your doctor because I'm only 3 weeks out and I can begin lifting weights again and I've been able to do high impact Zumba as my body allows in the past 3 weeks.. call your doc!
  19. I'm not all that happy, but I was ready for less weight loss during the mushy phase. I saw my nutritionist today-lost 1 pound in the last week and a half!!! argh! Two weeks post surgery I had lost 10! Iknow not to be frustrated, and I go in for my first fill tomorrow, so..I posted earlier that I had been feeling hungrier, and as if I can eat more now. I'veread So many posts like this, I really shouldn't be even writing this, but I just needed to vent, y'all! Upping my Water and Protein should help-at least I didn''t gain, right? I'll try and remain positive!..

Sheri congratulations on your weight loss even with all the issues you had from the surgery. Keep up the good work. You are a positive influence to others who have/had issues with their bypass.

Need some help from anyone considering vsg

I appreciate the help. I come from were I believe a lot of men come from for high school weighing 250 and working out every day to gaining some in college and going back to around 230. To finally taking a desk job and ballooning from there to where I am now at 420. I have a desire to workout, to play basketball to be active to be muscular strong again not just big guy strong. I worry about my mentality of being complacent if I reach a goal weight and letting go a little I ate a huge burrito today because I could not because I had to. I want to learn how to stop after one bite in future not keep filling myself. Maybe the worry is good for me it will keep me going. Like was said earlier I would rather struggle at 225 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Weight loss slow

Hi Lisa, Bandster Hell is tough. You have to really focus and stick to the rules given by your doc. Don't pay any attention to those who tell you that you can bend the rules because they're doc lets them. You're only accountable to your doc. My doc reviews for a fill every 4 weeks. Some docs are 6 or 8 or even more weeks than that. It took me 4 fills to get where I had lasting significant restriction. So for me that was 4 months! But this varies for every person. Some people maintain great restriction immediately post op and never even get a fill. Others it takes 4, 5, or 6 fills to get good restriction. It just takes a lot of patience. Focus and keep your eyes on the road every day. You may fall off the wagon once and a while - we all have - just dust yourself off and get back on immediately. I actually eat much more than three meals a day, but that's a topic for another time. You have enough to focus on right now. The band is tough! It's no miracle, and it's not easy weight loss. You must eat right, exercise lots, and stay focused. Good luck! Brad

    Protein, water vs calorie intake.

Thank you everyone. Jess, yes I still drink one a day. I can't to more because they gross me out now. I'm fine if I take one early but if I drink one in the evening it's torture. Kate, you mean more as far as ounces per day or at any given time? Esskay that's what I was doing all this time, focusing on Proteins and Water intake. Then I kept on reading that calories need to be increased in order to lose weight. Since I had a stall for a few weeks it threw me off and I started to think that was the reason why. I'm glad to know that I'm doing it right.

@@NewSetOfCurves what a thrill for you! Your story made me laugh. I could just picture it in my mind. I love what he said to you to relax you. Also, I want to tell you that you are a huge motivator for me. Before I had kids, my oldest will be 21 next month, I was in tip top shape. I played racquetball since I was 18, played tournaments in a couple of states competitively for money. Don't get excited, I only won a little money haha. Money brought out the best players, even the pros. There were years I played seven days a week. Every muscle in my body was solid. Man how I miss that. You motivate me to get to the gym and get after it. I have done some walking but that's it. I wanna start weights too. I wish you could reach through my phone and shake your finger at me and get my ass in gear! You look absolutely wonderful and congrats on your hard, hard, work. I have gotten massages for years. I LOVE them. My shoulders are as tight as tight can be and I have been told that many times. Being nude didn't bother me cuz I enjoyed my massage so much. I didn't care. I am a member of the Y here and love to hot tub. I go naked, however I am the only woman who does usually. There is normally only one or two women there, if that many. I knew I needed to lose weight and I knew hot tubs are meant to be used naked. ALL the men are naked always. It just never bothered me. I am 7 weeks post op and have lost 33 lbs. the only reason I am skeptical now is that my stomach scars look really purple now. Who knows if I'll even go soon. Maybe I'll try on my suit and be like them haha Thank you for the story. You make me want to go to the gym right now!!!!!!
