    Some questions/concerns

    1) Will I ever be able to eat normal things like everyone else down the road at some point? With restriction of course? For some reason this is worrying me as my surgery date approaches. I can eat everything, nothing bothers my stomach. 2) Will I be starving or feel starving after the surgery? I'm very fortunate that I have had almost no physical hunger. When I have had hunger, a couple of ounces and I'm full and satisfied. Head hunger is absolutely real, and more of a struggle for me. I've had to learn to differentiate between the two. 3) Will I be able to take all of my medications still? Prozac, bp, uric acid pills? As @Creekimp13 said, this very unlikely to be a problem, but talk to your Dr 4) Is it unsafe to live on such low calories? There has been quite a bit of research on very low calorie diets. Basically as long as you are under a Dr.'s care, get your protein and vitamin/minerals in, it is considered safe. On an average day I consume 500 calories as less, at 4+ months out. I feel great, and have no real issue with my low calories. The instance it has been a problems was when I was helping to move furniture. But normal stuff like walking, biking, light weights, are no issue.
  2. My weight is right near yours so I can relate completely. I think I will end up drinking my calories and eating healthy! Wendy's shakes and Slurpees! I can't lose anything really. Strange indeed!.
  3. I went to my GP today and she totally discouraged me. Is NOT a fan of weight loss surgery at all. I got the same ol, same ol', "diet and exercise and let's send you to a nutritionist". I didn't even WANT to tell her that I was considering going to Mexico. Good god I can only imagine the lecture I would have gotten. I emailed Dr. Kelly to ask how they handle this. I would obviously have to go back to Dr. Kelly if I had any complications. Anybody else deal with their GP being dead against it? meanwhile another friend of mine who had a bypass said her bariatric team here in the US feels that the sleeve surgery is showing a LOT of promise. I feel so let down.
  4. The scale says you're up from your start weight the day that you started nine days ago? Or you've been losing weight and just today your up? If the latter, that's normal. Our weight goes up and down all the time. Could be Water weight. If the former...that's odd. And how are you getting 1200 calories from just a single shake, a single salad, and popcicles and Jello? Are you using sugar free items? And low-fat dressing?
  5. Mine is placed on my breast bone, it is more common in the UK to be sited here as it is fixed to bone so doesnt move as much and doesnt get in the way if you have abdominoplasty , tt and bodylift like i had .. it does stick out a lot since the weight was lost but its hidden by my bra so no one can see it except me

American Gp Totally Against Wls. :(

My gp is completely against wls as well - so I am going with a new doctor for post op. That way I have full support as I lose weight if I need additional testing or medical care.
  7. I had my surgery on 2/19/14. I lost 10 lbs before surgery and only 9 after. I've been at the same weight for five days. I'm walking 5 days a week and I'm getting pretty much all my protein and water. Did anyone else stall that quick?

    Looking for friends/support

Hello! ☺ I just got my sleeve done 3 days ago. That's awesome that you've lost 32 lbs in 2.5 weeks! Incredible! I've been in so much pain and even wondering if I made the right choice, but stories like yours give me hope. Do you mind me asking your starting weight?

    Is this normal?

I have been banded 2 weeks today. Am I being impatient because I haven't lost any weight in the last week even though I'm sticking to plan, still feeling some restriction, and walking every night? I suppose the week prior to surgery and the week after spoiled me considering that I lost 15lbs during this time. Now, nothing.. i may have even put back on a pound or two. I'm sad..:cry My first fill isn't until the day before Thanksgiving.. 11/21.
  10. I'm 18 days post op today. I've gone from 214 at the time of surgery down to 201.1. And there I sit... all week. I know that is remarkable weight loss for just 3 weeks, but I was expecting to be in the "honeymoon" period a bit longer. I feel like I'm in a bad relationship - he's good to me for a few weeks and ignores me for one. It just seems cruel to teeter me at the precipice of Onederland. I want in that land really damn bad. I need some reality checks and pep talks. I've been battling dehydration for the past three days and really focusing on getting in my 8 glasses of water a day (64 oz). I also find that I eat an average of 800 calories a day - 60-70 grams of protein, 18 grams of fat, and about 35-50 carbs a day. Ideas?

how long were you off work

A week and 2 days, then part time 3 days, then back full time at 2 weeks. I'm a family practice physician assistant. I walk and talk for a living. I spent much more time than usual sitting the first couple weeks and I won't lie, I'm still exhausted at the end of the day!!! (I'll be 4 weeks out tomorrow) HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 231.4

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

@@jenkbacon I am 6 weeks out and returned to work after 4 weeks. I got some of the same reactions. "wow you look great!" or "you dont look sickly at all!" (from friends at work) or "have you lost weight??" and my all time favorite "how do you feel?" Its like they expect me to look and feel like I am on my death bed or something. I feel great no doubt but are they wishing I had complications??? I had one co-worker tell me that I am wearing my clothes big on purpose. Really??? I am not running out to buy new clothes just one month after surgery. I am wearing my regular work clothes for now. And absolutely I get the questions 'what are you doing?" "what are you eating?" I dont know if it's because I work in the medical field and diet seems to always be the topic around there or what. Maybe its different in a regular work environment. For now I enjoy the compliments, but hoping that soon the spotlight fades.

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

Congrats on your success this far! My situation is a little different because there was only 1 close friend at work who knew I had surgery (others have figured it out since then I think) and there was this one woman who just would not leave me alone. She was obsessed with my weight loss. "What are you doing?" "What are you eating" "When will you stop" etc etc etc. She made a comment to me at least once daily. It made me really uncomfortable, but now 18 months out, no one really mentions it anymore. They've adjusted to the "New me" and your co-workers will too. But expect lots of compliments in that first year of active weight loss! Even today someone came back to work who I had resigned a couple weeks ago for visit and we hugged and she said "Oh, you're as thin as a rail!!" That's definitely not something I'm used to hearing! Also weird is new people who have started or I've met at my work, church, kids' school since I lost 140+ pounds. It's so weird to me that they never knew me as overweight. Sometimes it will come up and I will show them a before and after picture and they are floored. It's kind of cool the first time someone says "I never would have known you were overweight". Good luck to you on the rest of your journey!
  14. I had my VSG on 1/20/2015. I told a few close friends I work with and of course my family prior. When I started my preop diet, people were quite nosey, so I was honest about my plans for surgery and really have had positive feedback. I returned to work after 4 weeks down 15.5 pounds (I lost 11 pounds in the 6 months working with the dietitian and 10 pounds on the preop diet), so I was at a total weight loss of 36.5 lbs. I really hadn't seen much of a difference personally in my appearance, but my scrubs were definitely looser. Everybody, made comments! It was crazy. I was very upfront about surgery and the response has been overwhelmingly supportive. The only somewhat negative experience I had was a doctor that I love dearly come up to me in excitement about losing weight and I told her about surgery, but she took a step back from me and stopped talking to me. She is overweight herself, but I was shocked at the look of disappointment she gave me. I'm now at the 8 week mark and I'm down 43.5! So not much of a change since I went back, but yesterday everybody again was commenting. Is the weight loss that different with WLS? I haven't changed much in 4 weeks, but I had multiple people use the phrase "skinny minny" yesterday! I'm a little overwhelmed by the attention. It's a very weird situation for me because I've always preferred to be a fly on the wall and now all of a sudden I'm front and center. Have any of you had this experience? Any advice? It's definitely not a bad thing and it is positive that people are so encouraging. I'm just not used to attention like that. It's a very new experience for me! ☺️

    Weight Watchers post op?

My NUT told me that a lot of his patients that have kept the weight off long term did weight watchers about 2/3rds of the way to goal. He said he thought it was helpful because of the meetings, teaming up with friends and the weigh in's each week. The plan itself...the "meals" are still going to be too much for us. Our food choices will just be different than everyone else's because we need to eat really small meals and high Protein. I know the program too. Did it several times...very successful once, a long time ago. I just don't think I am to the point where I want to pay a weekly fee. I'm still paying for the surgery.....and will for another 2 yrs, more than likely. And I pay Planet Fitness each month too. A lot of my "me" money is already going out the door for this. But.....if I ever get to the point where I feel I'm getting off track, I will definitely revisit WW's. Also, I am at a weird point. Lots of stalls. Its discouraging. I am still well within the guidelines of the diet but I have noticed that I tend to eat a little more carbs than I did in the beginning. So....that's going to stop. I have gained 1lb since starting weight training last week (have only been doing cardio up till now) I'm hoping the weight training will help with this stall, lose, stall, lose cycle I've been in. Maybe after I put on a little muscle I can dip back into the carbs??

    Going crazy

When I was pre-op I was completely obsessed, too. Couldn't come fast enough. Here are some things I did: Kicked up the exercise like crazy so I could get that habit going before surgery. I hired a personal trainer and in the 8 weeks leading up to surgery lost 4% body fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle (weight stayed the same because I was borderline and couldn't lose). Cleaned all the big off season clothes out of my closet. My surgery was June 9th, so I bagged up every big, oversized heavy sweater I owned. I kept the bags until after surgery just in case for some reason it got cancelled or something but donated them as soon as my surgery was over. I also made sure to keep myself busy with supportive friends. I reconnected with old friends I hadn't seen in a while and we started a walking group on Sunday afternoons. The time will pass and you'll be on the loser's bench before you know it.
  17. I am stressing myself out about losing too much weight and being rejected. My insurance requires a BMI of 40 to be considered. Mine is currently 47.5. I have a 3 month diet, and if I lose more that 40 pounds my BMI is going to drop to 39. I am so worried that I will have gone through this for nothing. 3 days into my diet and I am already down 3 pounds. Not complaining, I want to lose as much as possible for surgery to reduce lose skin and build good eating/exercise diets NOW rather than post op, I am just so stressed thinking that I could possibly lose too much. Is this possible? Has this ever happened to any one? I have aetna. Side note: I do not have any obesity related diseases so the need for surgery is based solely off my BMI.

    Two weeks post op

I have read lots of posts on this site about the week three stall...just type that in the search area and you can read lots of posts about it. I was sleeved 2/26 so I am at week two. I hope not to have a big stall starting next week but if I do I know it happens a lot. The weight will come off ....it just your body adjusting to everything! Good luck!
  19. You are doing swell! As for the tummyache issue, it might be lactose intolerance doing it to you. Try mixing Almond Breeze milk into the Protein powder to see if that won't help; soymilk might also work but it has more calories in it than the Almond Breeze--I get both at costco for reasonable prices, and also my protein out there is good, too. I use Muscle Milk lite in vanilla flavor to make my shakes with. Sometimes, I will add half of a banana to flavor it with--tastes very good! You could also try frozen blueberries in the shake which also is a nice tradeoff from plain vanilla. I think as you get farther along postop, you will do much better! I am 5-6, and right now weigh 186. I started this journey as a revision surgery patient from RNY to sleeve in May of this year--a first for the doctor I had. Normally, they do band to sleeve revisions. My bypass failed 5 yrs ago and I had developed hypertension that I cannot be treated for with meds due to severe allergies to all of them! Weight loss is my only intervention--I feel better than I have in years! My goal is to maintain at 145-150. My weight at the onset of sleeve surgery was 223.5 pounds--at the time of bypass surgery in 2001, I was 264. I never wanna see those 200s EVER again!!! It is great hearing from you, Dawn! Wishing continued success and keep me posted on your progress! Ronda I agree about the carbs, I try to avoid them for the most part and concentrate on the Proteins also. I saw the doctor for my check up today and I've lost 10lbs since my surgery. The doctor was happy with that and said slow loss is better for me since I have less to lose. I can't do the protein shakes. For some reason they give me a stomache ache. The doctor said to get my protein from my food instead. He also said that I can cut down the total protein from 75 grams to at least 50 grams. I am short only 4'10' and he said I don't need 75 grams of protein so I can stop stressing about getting so much protein. That was a relief for me as I have been feeling really worried about not getting enough protein. I also think that since I am not going to be eating constantly to consume so much protein I will see a better weight loss on my next visit. It is all a learning experience, but one that I am so glad to be working on.
  20. Just thought I'd share some stats for those of you that weigh everyday and get freaked out by gaining a pound or two some days. I went to urgent care yesterday because I was really dehydrated (I've got a clostridial infection causing diarrhea). They took my vitals including weight before giving me 3liters IV. Needless to say I felt instantly better and returned home. This morning I did my normal weekly weigh in and I was 11 pounds up from yesterday! So keep in mind how much hydration status and Fluid intake/output plays a role in your daily weight fluctuation.

    Water weight gain

I know you are right! I had surgery on January 27, but came home with a picc line, and have been hooked up to tpn for 14 hours a night since coming home. It is 3 liters of fluid EVERY NIGHT , and I cannot eat or drink ANYTHING by mouth yet. My scale shows just about the same every day, within about a 2-3 pound range. It is frustrating not to be losing....hopefully the pic line will come out this week, and I can get on with losing some weight.
  22. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and the weight fell off fairly rapidly. I transitioned from the Weight Loss phase into the Maintenance phase at around 7 months. Sleeve patients lose weight at a slower pace but they lose weight over a longer period of time, sometimes 2 years, and can achieve almost the same weight loss as RNY patients. Even though I lost weight rapidly, it was not a shock. Some people no longer recognized me. It is good to take a good before photograph so that you have something to compare it with after surgery. Many people do not see how obese they really are. I never appeared in photographs because I was the photographer in the family. When I looked in a mirror, it was alway straight on. The problem is that many people do not see how obese they really are and after surgery do not see how much weight they really lost. So in my case I took a before photo and a 6 month after photo. I tried to strike the same pose so it was a good one to one comparison. Here is the photo.
  23. Starting weight: 349 Surgery weight: 326 Current weight: 299 I'm 2days from wk 4. I am just about to move to soft foods...yay! New food tastes make life better. Does anyone worry they are loosing weight fast enough? Like I'm not doing it right. I follow the diet to a T, exercise 30min a day...I still feel tired a lot. I keep my Proteins up and liquids mostly up. Am I just worrying too much? Drs say I am doing fine, but I have a hard time believing it. My husband went through a gastric bypass just 4days ago, so I am taking care of him. His weight is dropping really fast, I try not to be jealous, we are doing this together, so we'll be there for our children and he had diabetes. Am I just overwhelmed, this whole journey is a rollercoaster of emotions? Does anyone else feel completely nutty? Sent from my XT1650 using the BariatricPal App

What pain med can i take?

peewee40, The only thing that got me through until I lost enough weight was Voltarin cream. It's an NSAID that absorbs through your skin. Once I lost enough weight, the pain in my back and knees got to be bearable with tylenol. It is a prescription and not an inexpensive one but worth every dollar for the pain relief. I understand what you are dealing with, the tylenol didn't relieve the inflammation I had, Thankfully the Voltarin did. Let me preface this next statement with what I'm about to say is not advice from a medical professional. I now take several Vitamins and herbs that are anti-inflamatory. Tumeric is a spice that I take twice a day--(should be taken with food, NOT on an empty stomach), Ester C is a Vitamin C that is easier on your stomach and I find it helps my joints. I take a probiotic capsule twice a day to help my constipation and have recently started drinking a Kombacha drink to also aid my digestive health. It is a fermented drink and I have seen the tea but the refrigerated one has the beneficial live organisms and the shelf stable tea does not. I made the mistake of drinking a whole bottle, (there are 2 servings per bottle), and had diarrhea. Too many beneficial Probiotics can be a BAD thing. I drink 1/2 a bottle and voila--no constipation, I go like I should. Since I'm eating mostly Protein, constipation is a problem if I don't get all the Water and get some Fiber in. I think since surgery I'm so much more focused on eating what I should and using vitamins and supplements to help my digestion work as effectively as possible thus helping me to lose weight, absorb nutrients and feel better. Blessings, Kathleen
  25. I agree that bmi can often be just a guideline and not the Mecca some believe it to be . As long as you are healthy and happy with your weight loss, consider yourself lucky. Those scales cannot be right !! I ( I only weighed at the doctors office and was pleased as time went on.) Still pleased 9 years later.... Feel successful with weight loss instead of that yo-yo Problem I had for years! Good luck and please keep posting. Lots of us care and want success for others!
