    Official November Bypass thread

I had the band unfilled last week.Got the doctor in the same practice who performs bypass. No problem.Going to try to get a fast appt with the NUT and psych in the next few weeks. My official consult with the new doc is on the 11th...no need for referral since they are partners in the same group.Yay!I want a revision before the New Year if possible.Pushing it.

    Tricare North - Bariatric Help

I am Tricare North Standard. In 2009 I was 5'2", 253 lbs., BMI 46 with HBP, cancer, and depression. Approved for lapband in a day. They required my weight history, mental health eval, other things were doctor requirements. I lost about 80 lbs. and kept it off for 6 years. Band started giving me issues with my esophagus and needs to come out. TriCare approved removal in a day, denied a revision to bypass. However, my doc did a peer to peer; on the website it looks like they have now approved the revision. That's not official yet, but if it is then it only took about four days for them to make that happen.

Men hitting on you when you are fat

This is a topic that really speaks to me. One of my reasons for getting lapband is that I felt it was vital that I experience life in a normal sized body, the body that I "should have had." (Sadly due to band complications this did not happen for me; I'm still fat and will not revise so I am resigned to never knowing what it will be like to be thin.) However, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that my choice in partners would have been much saner had I not been an obese woman during my dating years. I consistently "settled" and never partnered with a man who treated me in the way I deserved to be treated/honored/loved. Men who expressed interest in me were few, as is often the case with obese people. I settled, plain and simple. I do have two great kids so at least there's that. But I constantly wonder what kind of life I would have had had I been able to go through its important stages in a normal-size body. Your sleeve will allow you to get to a normal weight. If you do some work on the mental side and clear out the consequences of what the years of obesity have done to your confidence, I'm certain you'll make choices that are good ones. Pat yourself on the back for doing this while you are young...you've just spared yourself a lifetime of physical and mental complications (hopefully).
  4. Ok, who is excited? I know I am! I will tell you a little bit about me. I was banded in 2011, lost 80 pounds but developed complications and had to have it removed just 3 weeks ago. I am still overweight, never reached goal. I decided to revise to bypass which is a scary thing for me. My insurance company and my surgeon wants me to wait 3 months before revision to bypass mainly to heal from my recent band, scar tissue and port removal. I also have been on a physician supervised diet since April. My NUT and Psych appt are Oct 2nd. Once they have that, they can submit. I have a tentative date of November 13th or 16th. My surgeon is ok with either date. What is really weird, is that I was banded around that time back in 2011. I am looking forward to meeting others who will be going through this at the same time, and to support each other
  5. I am 4 weeks post revision. I had the band for 10 years an also was never told that the band had a 6 to 8 year life span. I too was a mess inside. Scar tissue and a large hiatal hernia. I am having problems with the sleeve. I can hardly keep anything down and the seliva reflux is very bad. Since I can hardly keep anything down I am losing weight too fast. 35 pounds in 4 weeks. I have had to go back to the hospital for dehydration two weeks ago and feel like I need to go back again. This is not what I expected. I am worried at this point but my doctor does not seem to be. I am half way to my goal weight but at the speed of my loss I am afraid of malnutrition .
  6. I am so thankful for Dr. Ryan Heider he has been so helpful with my revision and never questioned me when I told him my issues. Doctors who don't listen to the patients are dangerous. His entire staff have had weight loss surgery, which really is awesome they can answer most questions I have about what is normal and what might be a problem. When I went to him this last time was because of pain on my left side. Nothing showed on contrast and he took all the fluid out of my band and we tried for two weeks still had restriction so he said lets see what the insurance says. Well I have awesome insurance they allowed for removal of band and the sleeve all in the same surgery. I was worried but then realized he is one of the best in the country doing this and calmed down. I am three weeks out and yesterday had a piece of toast with peanut butter and nothing got stuck what an awesome feeling. I have lost 35 pounds as if yesterday. Best decision I could have made.
  7. I was back at work one week after surgery, because I don't do a job that required any strenuous work. I worked short days first two days back. I am back to normal completely and waiting for doc to give me permission to go back to my weightlifting soon. I had a harder time with band then with my revision !
  8. I had my revision on August 6th and my surgeon did a drain that way if a leak occurred I would know right away. They should do a contrast before you drink anything. My only regret is that I waited this long for my revision. As of yesterday I am down 35 pounds. So much easier than lap band was for me. You will do great because we have the eat slow and chew our food slowly down pat! Good luck!
  9. Random thoughts: Fall is my favorite season and it's almost here. I love taking my kids to the pumpkin patch. I am almost at my 3 year surgiversary and about to have revision surgery. Excite but apprehensive.

    Undecided

RNY is reversible. Sleeve is not. They toss out all the stomach that gets cut off, with sleeve surgery. I did NOT want that surgery, I wanted something that if need be, could be reversed. I also have a large amount of weight to lose. (approx. 200 lbs) So it was the clear choice, for the amount of weight I need to lose. I'd consider how much weight you have to lose. If you have GERD/Reflux, and read on people who had to have revisions from sleeve to RNY later, due to the gerd/reflux issues. I really let my surgeon advise me, as to the best thing for me, because well, he's the expert. Good luck with everything. The right answer will come to you.
  11. @@gigi14 I had band to sleeve revision and the surgeon told me that when he got inside if the band had caused any damage he would have to do a by-pass. I was his first revision but when he checked during the surgery he said all was fine and so he just sleeved me. I have been completely fine and find the sleeve ideal .Pippinleicester.

    Revision recovery

I didn't have a revision.... just gastric bypass. Most recommendations I saw were for 2-4 weeks off work. I chose to take 3 weeks off. It probably depends most on the type of job that you have... and perhaps on the post-op nutrition plan. 3 weeks was a good amount of time to take off except that my first day back at work was my first day transitioning to solid food. That was a struggle. Your doctor will likely support you in whatever time off works best for your circumstances. Share your preferences and thoughts with him/her.

    Any regrets?

@@Jasley, Good morning! I was in the same boat as you are. I had my heart set on the sleeve after going through the classes and doing some on line research. When I saw the bariatrician she recommended that I do not go with the sleeve but the RNY because I suffered from reflux. I was devastated. Mostly because like you I was afraid of bypass. She asked me what about bypass was I concerned about. I told her I thought bypass was more radical, the malabsorption as well as dumping syndrome. She spent a lot of time with me. First, bypass is no more radical that removing 85 percent of your stomach. With bypass you could be reversed, with sleeve once your stomach is removed it is gone forever. Bypass is the gold standard in WLS. Then she explained that the malabsorption was actually a good thing that would help me to lose more weight as long as I took my Vitamins and had my labs completed by my bariatric team. By the way you have to do the same for sleeve. Lastly she reminded me that dumping was not automatic. Many people do not get it. If I did get it, I would learn what foods triggered it and stop eating the. After talking with her, I did get a second opinion from my gastroenterologist. He agreed that bypass was my best option given my reflux condition. If I had the sleeve there would be nothing they could do to treat it further as I was on the highest dose of the best reflux medication. The only way to treat it would be to revise to a bypass anyway. I decided to go with bypass because I only wanted to go through this surgery 1 time. I have never ever regretted making that decision. Bypass cured my reflux completely, no more diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stage 3 kidney disease and sleep apnea. They are all in remission. I am down 119lbs in 11 months. Oh, and I don't suffer from dumping syndrome at all. No regrets here! Best thing I have ever done for myself as well. Good luck to you with whatever you choose to do. Please make sure you continue your research. This topic has come up hundreds of times on this site. You might want to search using the word revision to see just how many folks end up revising after lap and and sleeve because of the reflux issue. If I were you I would follow my doctors advice.

    Labor Day Challenge!

188.1...I don't think I'll make my original goal of 180, but hopefully I'll make a revised goal of 185. Yay!
  15. Spoke with my surgeon yesterday. I have friends who are 15 yr veteran GB patients and have had stretching of their pouches and stoma with regain. My surgeon has been performing the above procedure now for 3 months. I asked him a little bit more info about this so that I can share with our community forum This procedure came out 2 yrs ago and right now the data is still very small and new to determine long term sucess or failure rates. He told me that the above procedure basically helps create restriction again for stretched out pouches. I asked him if it was covered under insurance and he said it depends on the insurance. He also mentioned that the above procedure would be cheaper, less invasive, and easier option for self pay patients in lieu of having to do another revision surgery. Currently he has been performing this himself for 3 months, so still it is too early to tell for long term sucess. I will continue to check with him over the course of the year to find out more info, and will update if I hear of any more new info about this. If accessing the above link on a cell phone, the animation video will be at the bottom of the page. If accessing that link on laptop or desk computer...the animation video will be top right of page. http://apolloendo.com/procedures/outlet-pouch-reduction/
  16. Having revision from sleeve to bypass Monday. Doc said I should be good to go back to work in 2 weeks. Anyone else who had revisions I am curious to know how long it took you to go back to work. Thanks!
  17. Glad to hear things are going well. I did the revision on 8/21/15, and am feeling great. As for how long to take off, I also took two weeks off and am not sure I will actually use the whole two weeks. I definitely get tired more quickly, but that of course has a lot to do with the surgery and lack of calories. I did work hard to stay ahead of my pain, and used the meds as directed this time.
  18. I researched alot too... but part of it was I had already failed with the lapband (implanted 2001) and so felt that NEED. I thought I had researched the lapband, but in truth I was very poorly informed, did not absorb the information well... and in hindsight I think was given some very bad, inadequate guidance and advice. Having said all that, my anxiety started AMPING up about the revision to the sleeve so I did reach a point where I didn't want to hear anymore. In the weeks leading up to surgery, I was very careful about what posts I read on here, what studies I read etc. I had also reached the point in life where I decided to "turn this over" to the experts. What I mean by that is I picked a program that I believed in and then did EVERYTHING they said. In the past, I used to think i was smart enough to "customize" instructions to fit ME, as we all know, we are special (not so) little snowflakes - ha. Truth is, when I did what they knew was tried and true, I found much success. For me, a key part of success was just being so "over" food as a friend, comfort or anything else - like the bad boyfriend you gotta kick to the curb! Doesn't mean it was always easy.
  19. I just had band to sleeve revision on Monday.. I'm 4 days post op and although I'm sore which is to be expected I'm doing great.. I'm following everything the doctor and dietitian said.. ????
  20. Hi, I've just had my band to sleeve revision carried out this week in one go. Having read this read I'm now worried that this process should have involved two steps. My surgeon never suggested that I should have two separate operations. Why do you think having two separate surgeries reduce the chances of a leak? Please reply as soon as possible because I'm worried. Thank you.

Sept date I am all set

Was a band to sleeve revision on 5/13 - Band erosion - only removed the band. New Surgeon and sleeve scheduled for 9/23. Scared and excited!
  22. I was seeking a revision to sleeve but I did my research and will opt for bypass.....can't cut out 85% of my stomach. No way.
  23. When I originally went to see my doctor, my BMI was 49; I'm 5'7" and I weighed 315 lbs. He told me that really the only serious option for me was the gastric bypass. He said that a person with as much weight to lose as I have does best with the gastric bypass, because it provides the most weight loss. I have heard other doctors say the same thing. Second, if you read these boards you will find many people who have had revisions from other WLS (both band and sleeve) to the gastric bypass because of various problems with those other forms. I decided I only want one WLS ever. Third, as others on this thread have said, the gastric bypass is no more "radical" than a sleeve; both will require Vitamins for the rest of your life, both involve significant changes to your stomach, etc. The gastric bypass provides weight loss because of malabsorption, restricted pouch size, and possibly reduction in Ghrelin (the hormone that triggers hunger). One of the side effects many gastric bypass patients experience is dumping syndrome when either poor foods (high fat, high sugar, various other bad things) are consumed or too much food is consumed or "stuck" (often because food has not been chewed sufficiently). Although the symptom is unpleasant, it acts as a "teaching tool" to change bad behaviors, which is a very positive outcome. In the end you will have to make the decision on your own. You are the one who will have to live your life with whatever surgery you choose. The people on this forum are pro-gastric bypass, since this is a gastric bypass forum. If you are really leaning toward the sleeve, you might want to go on the sleeve boards and ask around there about that surgery, to get a different slant on this issue. Good luck and best wishes on whatever choice you make.
  24. I am the analytical type... so I tend to want to know the "why" - but when it comes to managing obesity I am over it. At this point, it is just "how" I was committed when I revised from band to sleeve... and I remain committed to the "fight". I love life as a normal sized person too much to consider any other path.
  25. Just got scheduled for my band to revision surgery with Dr. Ortiz in Mexico at the end of the month. My problem is that I am unable to have my band unfilled prior to the surgery like they recommend. I talked to the Dr. there and he said as long as I do full liquid diet for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery, I should be fine. I guess I am just nervous about that and was wondering if anyone else had the same issue? My problem is that getting someone locally (NC) to perform the un-fill is going to cost at least $750 locally (nothing covered by insurance) and that just gets out of the budget. Am I overreacting?
