Help! Best Fast Food Option W/ Protein?!
lml32937 replied to KikiCC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
7/11 get string cheese and yogurt or a protein shake, protein bar etc. -
I'm 6 days post-op and a little dizzy this morning. I think mine has more to do with needing to get in more fluids (only got 50oz yesterday) and hitting my protein today (got 60g yesterday but should have 80g according to my plan). I'm watering down some of my clear protein drinks so they aren't so sweet and adding powder protein to the small bit of foods (like yogurt) that I'm allowed. I hope you get to feeling better. (((hugs)))

I mix with plain Fage yogurt and dip apples or cucumber slices in it, or just eat eat. I've also mixed it with oatmeal and that was good for a treat.

vegetarians and protein - what are you eating?
willowcat replied to smitten kitten's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Greek yogurt by Fage! You can buy it in stores like Natural Grocers, Wild Oats, and other "health food" stores. One serving has 21 grams of protien--and if you buy the zero fat version, it has zero grams of fat! I like it a lot and I stir it into all sorts of things. -
Help!
deejay1383837872 replied to naturalbeautiful814's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Protein Drinks aren't complete protein. You should be eating meat, eggs and other forms of Protein as well. You are weak due to incomplete diet. And popcorn has no redeemable nutrition to it. If you only get 1/2 to 3/4 cup make it count with protein first, veggies fruits next and then carbs. Yogurt, Hummus, cheese......You need a balanced diet! -
Whising i started making changes before liquid diet!

In my diet i can hve 3 protein shakes a day...plain yogurt , sugar free pudding , sugar free jello, sgf popsicls and chicken broth i thought i would be good with all those options but i just get really hungry for salt foods and i love spicy so i end up eating like a vegatable with hot sauce i dnt think its a good idea to hve hotsauce tho so im eliminating that its just been really hard nd its making me doubt my self after the surgery its stressing me like i said i hve a little more control each dAy but i end up feelin dissapointed in my self for not sticking to it completly but thakyou for your reply and good luck on your journey ... I hope its not this hard after surgery! -
catherine, I was always a steak and taters kind of girl, and now I find myself practically a vegatarian. The only kind of meat I dont have trouble with is ground beef. and that is in limited quanities. I had the surgery at the end of May'08. When I'm in the supermarket I pass by the Meat Dept without a second thought. It's become second nature to me to live on hummus, canned tuna, cottage cheese; yogurts; canned chicken & various cheeses. Like others have said to you, what we give up is minimal to what we gain. Good luck. steph

That to This posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
i started my pre op diet today...my surgeon gave me a meal plan that is practically NOTHING. I dont want to set my self up for failure.... but he is wanting 1000 cals/80 grams of protein. I tried broth, jello and shakes for a day and i felt like i was starving to death. I ended up cheating so bad. I dont want to set myself up for failure so this time i added plain greek yogurt to keep me full. I dont want to fail at this....am i already sabataging myself? -
I am very lucky to not have a all liquid pre op diet. I give you props haha I have a protein shake for breakfast then a snack which is either a protein bar or Greek yogurt and then lunch is a protein shake and then I get another snack then for dinner it's 6 ounces of lean protein, 1 cup of cooked vegetables(2 cups if raw) and 1/2 cup of a starch then one more protein shake before bed if I'm hungry! Good luck though! The 26th will be here before we know it![emoji4][emoji4][emoji4]

My pcp suggested that I have the gastric sleeve and directed me to Dr. Stephen Malley in Kansas City. I watched his seminar online and then made my appointment and met with him on October 23rd. Time has been speeding by at a very fast pace since then. My surgery is scheduled for November 11th which is 8 days away. I had a heart attack (1 stent) in 2011 so Dr. Malley requires that I get a clearance from my cardiologist. I met with him on Friday and it did not go well. He wants me to take a stress test before surgery. I don't think it's covered by my insurance so that is why I am dragging my feet. I also feel "what will be, will be". I am a cash patient and all the prelim stuff I have had to do to get qualified is not included in the fee. I am less scared than I was yesterday, thanks to a late night chat on this site. My first question is about the chat rooms. Why are there 9 showing up in the chat rooms but nobody is available to chat? Next, is there a lot of pain associated with this? I do not like to take pain medication and if the pain isn't higher than a 7 (from 1-10) then I think I can deal with it. Then, I am extra emotional right now. I thought I read that that happened AFTER the surgery. I stop myself when I realize I'm feeling sorry for myself but feel weepy (sp?) and sometimes very much overwhelmed. I do not cook. I can cook but don't enjoy it. Just reading over the information, there doesn't seem like there is going to be anything that I can eat, once I get to that post surgery stage. I see that I can have yogurt and cottage cheese and I HATE both of those. Okay, I'm taking some deep breaths & changing the subject before I get myself worked up again. I DO plan to join a support group so I know that will be the extra help that I need to see me through. I am so appreciative of this group as well!!! Two of my sisters are not supportive and I don't know how the other 2 sisters feel. My DH is supportive and is paying for the sleeve but continues to eat in front of me. So hard. At the end, I am excited, I am happy to be this close to surgery and looking forward to getting healthier. I have also scheduled a date with my treadmill for today! (We're virtual strangers - lol). I hope I haven't written too much but my brain is overflowing. Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

I had my surgery on Sept. 11 and I'm not a pro at this but I can help with a few of your concerns! I cook less now than before surgery! As for not liking yogurt or cottage cheese, I didn't have a problem with yogurt but I hated cottage cheese before my surgery. However, after surgery I tried it and was soooo glad to have something to 'almost' chew that I started to really enjoy it! Canned chicken & tuna are great when you advance to that stage. Seafood has lots of protein, I like pre-cooked shrimp or crab with mashed potatoes...all microwavable! I still drink protein shakes too, there are lots of brands but l like Unjury (chocolate & chicken flavored). Eating really is easier that ya think! The pain after surgery I would say varies from person to person, I drank pain medicine for about a week after my surgery, a little less everyday but I still wanted/needed it, I hate pain!! My husband and this website are my support system, I didn't tell my sister or any other family members because I made my mind up to have this surgery and did not feel like discussing it with anyone. When he eats in front of me, it really doesn't both me much...I really want to loose this weight so I have my meals & he has his!!! Hope some of this helps! Good luck!

2 weeks post op and zero restriction with liquids yogurt and protein shakes

Remember - just because you can doesn't mean you should. Yogurt is one of those foods that slide through your sleeve and likely won't make you feel full. -
11 days out 14.5lbs down but having some problems
The redhead posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everything has been going well except.... I am starving like many still, I know it will go away soon, but I don't get to really eat anything for about 2 weeks more. I absolutely cannot swallow another bit of Jello. I would go as far to say jello can go F*** itself ;)I drink broth about once a day, thats all I can handle anymore. I drink Crystal light and have SF popsicles alot as well as hot tea. My main issue is protien. I bought many many many kinds there is not one named on this site I feel I have not tried $$$$. I fell in love with isoflex. The issue is today I took 3 drinks of it and all of it came up. i waited a while and tried again and the taste and smell of the Protein make me sick..... it also found its way painfully out not only my mouth if you catch me...(this is humiliating). I am not yet suppose to have yogurt or anything to mix it with. My stomach would not stop felling like I was dying so I broke down and had some (three spoons) of almond milk ice cream that were in my fridge and my stomach settled almost immediately. I can't continue to use that as A.) I am not to that stage yet and B.) there is a smidgen of sugar and I am on the SF part still. I take all my Vitamins and prevacid 2x daily. I will be asking the fill in Dr. at my surgeons office (mines on vaca for a month). I would love any suggestions. I am worried they will move me up to puree or mushies early to make sure I get my protein in, but as nice as that sounds I want the benefit of the jumpstart weight loss that comes with the liquid diet. I have done an embarrassing amount of research and there seems to be a pattern with those losing a higher amount the first month and the diet they were told to follow. I know it all evens out at the end, but it feels like at this moment the weight will never come off and the finish-line is too far to see. I know thats not true but thats what feels like reality. Thank you in advanced. -
I have tried a few different individual packets of whey Protein with greek yogurt, milk, muscle milk and Water and every time - and every single time i have one - two sips my stomach is KILLING me. It's not a full feeling, it's pain and discomfort. Has anyone else had this reaction? I was trying to save some money/calories by going to powder instead of continuing with pre-made shakes like muscle milk but it's seriously painful, to the point where I want to leave work and go to bed. I'm not trying to punish myself by continuing to try it - I just want to find a way to make it work. but maybe I'm just intolerant for some reason. Thoughts?

C diff and newly sleeved:( TMI and lengthy. ..
Kindle replied to Staycee Vanshel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel your pain. I got a C. diff infection, also from clindamycin for a tooth infection. It just so happened to be 6 weeks after my VSG. Uncontrollable diarrhea with about a 10 second warning via severe cramping. No stopping it, no preventing it. At first they put me on metronidazole for 10 days, diarrhea cleared up, all was fine but then came back within 2 days of stopping meds. Another two weeks of metronidazole. Same thing, cleared up but came back as soon as I stopped. The worst part was that the metronidazole made me extremely nauseous and I could barely eat or drink anything....I was seriously having to spit out my own saliva cause swallowing it made me gag. I ended up needing IV fluids for dehydration 3 times. Plan B....vancomycin for three weeks. This is normally insanely expensive. $800-$1000 for the course but my gastroenterologist has a pharmacy that makes a vancomycin elixir for like $150. Vanco worked great....cleared up the diarrhea and didn't make me sick. But once again, 5 days after stopping the diarrhea came back. Oh, BTW, I had been drinking/eating yogurt and taking OTC probiotics since day 3 postop. I was also taking a 22 strain 50,000CFU probiotic and Sacromyces supplements once I was diagnosed with C.diff. Obviously didn't matter. So restarted Vanco and made plans for a fecal transplant. My insurance insurance wouldn't pay for it but I wasn't about to go through months and months of an ineffective antibiotIc regimen. Normal poop was worth the $$$ I had to pay. My gastroenterologist had done about 35 of them with a 100% cure rate. So I recruited a friend to be my donor.( my PCP's wife, actually), we went through all the blood and fecal tests to make sure she wasn't going to give me any other transmissible diseases and went ahead with the fecal transplant. It was super easy...just a glorified colonoscopy and it was an INSTANT CURE! Never had an issue since, and that was 20 months ago. BTW, I now list all of the C diff risk antibiotics as allergies so no one ever administers them again. In fact, I don't plan on ever taking any antibiotics ever again unless it's life or death. I just had my gallbladder removed and I let them give me ONE injection of ampicillin periop but refused the postop prophylaxis. Good luck! -

Foods for best weight loss
Jachut replied to Yetta2u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just eat less! But I think the easiest way to keep calories low is to cut out the starchy part of a meal - the breads, pastas, rices, noodles, those are the calorie dense foods that add up - as does fat. I dont believ in low carbing it, but I did greatly reduce the carb and fat portion of my diet. So dinner might be a small piece of steak on the barbecue and a big salad, I dont feel the need to for a potato to go along with that, although we do have sometihng like spaghetti bolognaise once a week or so. I choose salads, yogurt and fruit and Soup for lunch, might have some crispbreads or crackers with that but would rarely choose a sandwich with 2 slices of bread in one meal. Breakfast is when I indulge most in carby foods - I love my Peanut Butter toast, or bowl of Cereal - but its ONE piece of toast, a small bowl of cereal and I round it out with fruit or yogurt instead of large servings. An hour's running a day burns up a lot of energy too, so that I never have had to give up anything totally. -
Foods for best weight loss
reverie replied to Yetta2u's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really is all about calories in calories out; you need to burn more calories than you eat or eat less calories than you burn. No specific list of foods is going to guarantee weight loss. I'd suggest sticking to eating your Protein first, especially chicken, turkey, and fish. Try to get 3-4oz each meal. Eat vegetables and fruits as well, and if you're still hungry eat a little bit of starch. (ie. corn, Beans, rice) On a daily basis I am eating eggs, turkey bacon, oatmeal, chicken, beans, rice, mixed vegetables, fruit, cheese, protein (on weight-lifting days), cottage cheese, Protein Bar, greek yogurt, broccoli, carrots, etc. I believe variety is important. Find what works for you.. Good luck. -
When Did You Start Protein Drinks
NYCMom41 replied to dar36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started on protein shakes two days after I was banded. Although, I've been cleared to start regular solid foods as of last week, I am still drinking one protein shake for breakfast. I am tired of eating eggs, don't like yogurt or cottage cheese and have come to actually enjoy the shake. It keeps me feeling fuller and there are so many different ways to prepare a protein shake you can't get bored. -
I can relate even though it was a long time ago. I felt like for the first two months I had to fight and I mean seriously fight to keep a lot of food down. Hang in there, it does get better. I know- its not really exciting but some of us have more trouble with this than others. I think I only could eat two foods without feeling really sick- fruit flavored baby food and I think yogurt. I wish I had something more helpful to say- maybe someone else will post better advice. But I wish you the best.

5 mo post op stall, for past month
Wynnie replied to snowkitten's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would start back at square one, I.e. Protein shakes for 2-3 days and water, water, water. Might be helpful for your spasms too by giving it a rest from solids. Also incorporate protein powder in plain Greek yogurt, you can mix in the protein powder. Stick with it, you've come so far! -
Hi all. I hear a lot about using plain yogurt in making a variety of foods. I'm still learning how to broaden my options and would love some variation. I'm 4 weeks post op and still on pureed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Gastric Sleeve to MGB in 18 days
Band07 replied to Manuel Lopez Ganoza's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I did one week of clear liquids, one week of full liquids (protein shakes and cream soups, yogurt) then a week of purée like apple sauce and really runny mashed potatoes and then a week of cottage cheese, refried beans type foods before moving onto soft regular foods.
