  1. My surgery is scheduled for Dec 19 at Bariatric Pal MX in Tijuana. I have never been to Mexico so I'm excited for the travel as well as the surgery. I'm going alone so I opted to stay the extra night for the extra day of healing before traveling. I'm wondering if it is likely I will feel up to sight seeing or not? My hotel is a 10 minute DRIVE from the ocean and I won't have a vehicle. That leaves me to think seeing the ocean is out. I'm bummed about that because I live in Iowa, farmland central. Those who went to Bariatric Pal, did you feel up to seeing anything outside the hospital/hotel and how did you get there?

    popcorn

Yes, those of us who are bariatric surgery patients can eat popcorn if our plans allow it. Nonetheless, just because we can doesn't mean we should. Popcorn is a slider (a.k.a. slurry food) that lacks sufficient protein. Since it's a slider, one could graze on a 1-pound bag of popcorn, never feel full, and have consumed 2000 calories over the course of a few hours. In other words, tread carefully. Good luck to you.
  3. Friday was my last appointment for my 6 months medically supervised weight loss as required by my insurance (Anthem BCBS); this week I am to receive a call from the Bariatric Coordinator to schedule my appointment with the surgeon. There are some questions I know I want to ask but what did you all ask the surgeon during your appointments?

    CaliforniaCandy - Newbie

Hi, everyone. My name is Candy and I've just become a member. I've been struggling with my weight all my life but it's been worse after I had back surgery around 10 years ago. I have chronic back pain, costochondritis (arthritis in the chest ribs), diagnosed degenerative disc disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis in the body back at the incision site for my surgery. There's more but I don't want to take up everyone's time listing it all. My primary doctor at Kaiser finally agreed to refer me to the bariatric department. I haven't had my first appointment yet but feel relief from the referral. I plan on being a regular on the board, especially once I'm seen and evaluated by the department. I'll be a lurker till then. There's a lot of good information on this site so I'll be doing a lot of reading and pop in occasionally on some thread. I don't want to be a bother so help me out when I go on too long. Looking forward to getting to know everyone.
  6. Take a deep breath. Calm down. Food isn't disappearing from your life forever, you will have many more healthier thanksgivings to come. Pretend it's next thanksgiving and you are wearing designer jeans and a great shirt - are you going to care about the food then? NO a big fat NO!!!! Are you truly hungry? Or is just the sight and smell of food making you think you want food? Is your stomach gnawing - it could be acid reflux. Can you contact your bariatric team or your NUT? Do you have a support group that meets anywhere? I like Isopure ready-made drinks - they are tart rather than sweet shakes, or protein water 20. Everyone's surgeon has a different program. Just follow the one you were given. You are healing and this part takes time. Go binge watch something on netflix when people are eating or take a walk, call a friend, get a pedicure, anything....paint by number Hang in there.

Cannot stick to pre op diet

Agreed. I was actually told this by the bariatric nutritionist. “If they open you up and find your liver is too big because you didn’t follow the diet, they will close you right back up. And good luck getting insurance to pay for a second attempt.”
  8. I went to the ER a few days ago due to abdominal pain. They did a CT scan and said I had an enlarged Spleen and my blood work showed high liver function readings. They called my Bariatric doc and he told them he was aware of the spleen being enlarged because it was when he did my sleeve back in February!!! So a few questions. 1. Shouldn’t the surgeon have told me about it after surgery? I had no clue. 2. Has anyone else had this happen? The ER dr was very concerned and not even 10 minutes after calling my bari dr she was discharging me! He told her it was not related to anything bariatric but was probably a “female” issue. How the hell does a “female” issue cause an enlarged Spleen and high liver function tests?! Plus I had just seen my gyno a few months ago. Needless to say I think my surgeon is a prick now. And it worries me that I’ve had an enlarged spleen for 9 months and am just now showing signs of it with pain and tenderness. I can’t see my pcp until Tuesday but refuse to go back to the ER. The dr didn’t even come back in to tell me what he said, it was the discharge nurse that did. So I don’t think too highly of this dr either. And they gave no instructions except to see my pcp . Just so frustrated and angry at my Bariatric surgeon and ER dr as well. Has anyone else had to deal with this after surgery? Or know why my surgeon would not have told me about it?
  9. Hello, this is my first post, very new to all this. I'm in the middle of my required bariatric program before having the procedure. If everything goes as planned I'll be having surgery around March...I been prepping for the sleeve but it seems like my doctors are leaning me towards the bypass. Is there anyone out there that has changed their mind about the type of surgey? What made you decide? Sent from my SM-S902L using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. @temkins I'm not pissy with your post. lol I'm pissy with the media. Please forgive my rant. [But at the same time I never forget, that celebrities are behavior models for many of us. That adds some extra responsibilities] I leave it to the medical professionals. They are responsible to inform, promote and educate the benefits of bariatrics. I would never take a celebrity's advice on anything. Most things I see from celebrities are unrealistic and deceptive I would hope celebrities are not role models. Air brushed and just as flawed as anyone else. We are sold we are not good enough. We need to be young, thin, live these amazing lives with lots of money. It's all about making money. Celebrity status is sold to society. (TMZ , movies, music artists,Kardashians sports figures) We are fed news articles, their product, their commercials. All to keep them relevant and in the public eye. [Many stars are advertising very questionable health and sports products,] Amen! How many times do you see infomercials, tabloids, workout equipment, magazine ads promising quick weight loss. We know it's all BS. [you just can't claim you are doing just sports if you did a VSG - others will be trying to do the same and obviously will fail, piling up depression and diffidence.] Yes, I can and do claim that I eat healthy and workout. ( All are true statements) I don't feel the need to share my personal experience about surgery with everyone. I'm not responsible for anyone's choices and emotions in life. My eyes roll every new years when the weight loss commercials start.

If you haven't had a bowel movement in three weeks post-op, follow-up with your surgeon's office. They usually want to make sure you're not having any issues with that, so keep them in the loop on what you're trying and what you're eating. Mine asked me directly at my 1wk post-op if I've been passing gas and having bowel movements. Are you using any bariatric-specific protein powder (like Bariatric Advantage)? I was told not to use that for the initial post-op, since the make up of the fiber content can cause constipation. Have you tried prune baby food?

    Hysterectomy

I am 3 months out from the GSV procedure and will be having a hysterectomy at the end of this month. Does anyone know if I should expect any recovery issues? The procedure will be done robotically and I am keeping my ovaries. Is this something my Bariatric surgeon should know about?

    Frustrated

I don't have any advice because my insurance excludes anything bariatric related. So I am going the self pay route. I just wanted to tell you to not give up. You are obviously determined because you went through all the work to get as far as you have. Keep fighting the fight!

  15. very very very bad idea. Lap bands have terrible complications and as of right now a 50% failure rate. the odds are extremely high you will do irreversible damage. there are Bariatric patients out there who have done band over RNY (never heard it for sleeve) and they can never have another revision because it could be fatal for them. my local center of excellence currently has an 80% removal rate...80%. there are countries that have banned the band. the conventional revision path from a sleeve for lack of weight loss is either RNY or DS (the sleeve is the first stage of the DS). Honestly, I"m shocked any doctor would recommend a band. my doctor says any doctor still putting them in should be sued for malpractice.

    Preop Gastric Sleeve

Hi! I’m scheduled for Nov 16 as well! One protein bar a week out won’t affect your surgery. From what my bariatric nutritionist said, the important thing is to stay low carb, low fat in order to deplete the liver’s glycogen stores and use up some of the liver fat (so smaller liver for surgery). Then the 2 days immediately prior, it’s very important to stick to the liquid diet because otherwise you could go into surgery with bits of food still in your digestive system. In that case, some surgeons may still do the surgery but others will close you up without operating. So definitely a bad scenario. I have been having 6 egg whites/day on top of my protein shakes, and my bariatric nutritionist is ok with that until the last 2 days.

    Nosy People

I had a coworker that had bariatric surgery and she didn't tell anyone. When asked, she said she had her gall bladder removed. When you make a lifestyle change, eventually people will put the puzzle pieces together. Whether they ask to be supportive or just to be nosy and gossipy, remember that this is YOUR journey. Don't let anyone make you feel uncomfortable because you decided to do a great thing for yourself. Most of the time the opinions that matter, aren't from the people you work with. Success 2-3 yrs post op?

It has been my experience, that all negative side effects can be traced back to behavior - I realize not everyone is that fortunate. I was suffering from reflux/heartburn this last summer but it miraculously reduced when I cut back/cut out on coffee and wine (and ended a toxic relationship - coincidence?, maybe!). I am currently doing a 6 week transformation and I am so not hungry on that program - ha. It is like all very lean protein and veggies with small portion of healthy carbs 2x a day (with breakfast and lunch). It seems like so much food, but really it is the type of food that is so satiating - it has been a good reminder to me that following bariatric rules actually works (including for people who have not had WLS!)

    Reflux post op

I had reflux before my sleeve in 2013, was stable on Prevacid at the time. Seemed to do fine until about a yr ago. Now my GI doc has me on 3 different reflux meds. I went back to my Bariatric surgeon and he’s doing to do a revision to RNY. My reflux has cause severe damage to my esophagus because the lower end is weak and the valve doesn’t close to keep the acid in my stomach. I have made all the dietary changes and sleep elevated- still have symptoms daily.

    Insurance setback- heartbroken

I️ totally feel your pain. I️ was just told the same thing BUT I️ called my insurance and found the policy for bariatric surgery and there is nothing that specifies 6 months. So maybe you should call your insurance just to confirm! Don’t give up cause if you don’t do it now, 6 months later you’ll be in the same situation wishing you stayed the course! Good luck!

    Egg Drop Soup

I beg to differ, because it is very important that the answers are correct. Digestion and physics are nor related in this sense. I called my surgeon to ask that same exact question. I asked for to the same reason.... I was drinking a LOT of water at once. Before getting my MBA I was a hospital corpsman in the US Navy for 8 years. I know A & P but I don't know zilch about bariatrics. I reached out to my surgeon. He stated " liquids alone will not challenge the sleeve". He added that as long as they are not carbonated or that your stomach doesn't have food in it already. He told me not to worry about it. Sooooo, no need to worry, same thing happened to me. Its gets better when you can have real foods. 5' 5" HW: 259 CW: 237 GOAL: Healthy and hard 140-ish?
