    Self Care

Thanks for this. I really needed to find something like that today. I've been so depressed lately it's almost paralyzing. I think it has a lot to do with the loss of comfort. Small things you do to make yourself feel better. Like go out to dinner with friends, have a soda, go shopping or whatever. I can go out, but the reward isn't the same. I'm desperate for clothes, especially now that the seasons are changing. I'm in a size 8 or 10 now. Nothing from last year fits and I'm still losing, so no point in buying clothes unless I need them for something specific. I used to have lovely clothes that fit me well and made me feel pretty. I'm a vintage clothing collector, so my wardrobe was carefully cultivated over decades. I had been the same size for over 20 years. Now, nothing fits. No point in buying lovely dresses. I want the comfort I used to get from curling up with a pint of ice cream. But, I know that it would be no consolation now. I'm feeling sorry for myself. I know that. It's nice to think of other ways to find comfort until I feel more like myself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    April 2017 sleevers?

My sleeve was 4-19. Doing good as far as I can tell. Drinking water and protein drinks. Looking forward to creamed soups. Not much appetite though, which is a PLUS
  4. I have had one of the worst days of my life today. I finally got a date from the surgeon yesterday. I should be happy right...well listen to this.... I just started teaching school in January, but I have been very up front with the school and I told them I might be doing a surgical procedure this year. A month ago I talked to the director and he told me no problem, just to let them know when I needed time off. Today I went to talk to the director to tell him that I have a date and I will only be taking 3 days off (yeah, thats right...3 I made sure to schedule it in between 2 holidays so that I will get a week off but only need to take 3 days) The first director that I had talked to was to busy to talk to me and his secretary told me to make an appointment. Then I went downstairs and I saw one of the other directors and mentioned to him that I needed to talk to them, so we went into his office. When I told him what I was there for, he said he couldn't BELIEVE that I would spring this on them knowing I had only been at the school for 3 months, THEN he proceeded to tell me that I have always been overweight and that he knows I have a problem and that I should exercise more and diet...and basically telling me what to do with my life.... Then he proceeded to tell me that some one complained about me eating all the cakes in the waiting room. (they usually put a plate of 10 to 15 miniature cakes in the morning) which is complete and absolute trash! I hardly EVER eat any of the cakes mostly because I don't like them. I also am part owner of a cake factory myself! If I want cakes I'll bring them from my own store...and 3rd of all...thats just gossip. And I couldn't believe he was repeating that to me. I basically told him that it was non of his business and that I was there as a courtesy to let them know what days I would be taking off. It took almost everything I had not to burst into tears in his office. He apologized (in a smart ass kind of way) and said he shouldn't have made those comments and THEN he went on to say that he wouldn't do any thing about the other problem. It took me a few minuets to remember what he was talking about....he meant about me eating all the cakes!! What the hell was he going to do? Forbid me from eating cakes?? WTF Now I'm not even sure if I should be doing the surgery, its bringing all kinds of problems at work, and we are going to be stretched for cash paying it all and my husband isn't so sure....and gawd.....help me guys.

  8. I'm on day 7 of my pre-op (Band goes on tomorrow!) and I was not given a calorie goal, I have been limited to 20 grams of protein per day. (A Carnation SFInstant breakfast with 1% has 13 grams!) Amazingly, I'm OK, and I've lost 19 lbs this week.
  9. Did you review the add that shows on this app? I( I right now can't think of the name) ordered 2 boxes yesterday I don't know how they taste yet but I figured I'm gonna kisss a lot of frogs before I meet my prince... bbbbaaahhh. I have had six star Elite series 20g protiens sugar 6 total calorie 190 carbs 15. Not to bad I also use their shakes. That bars are probably a medium size so have a better chance to be able to get most of it down, the other is called Pure PROTIEN 19 g PROTIEN 1 go sugar and a total of 190 calories. This bar is a tad bit smaller than the Six Star. Both are tolerable for me. The pure PROTIEN flavor I have tried is dark chocolate coconut. There are so many out there you just need to watch carbs and sugar. Hard to narrow down on the bars unless you try several. If you try them let me know what you think Michelle Rose Spring TX 77373

    My Last Supper... And Emotions...

Hi Keys Pirate- Welcome to VSY and the boards!! I COMPLETLEY understand about the love of food!! We all base our lives around it!! I just have to tell you- without trying to "sugar coat it"............ you will have days that you HATE it........... not being able to eat what you want. that damn head hunger is a buggar........... even tho you are not "physically" hungry...... your mind will still crave certain things. Mine was bad the first 3 months.......... but it does subside..... and you make up your mind what you want to do. The hunger is gone for me...... I am 10 months out...... no hunger at all. and I hope it continues!!! The head hunger is gone too....... I might "crave" something....... so I eat it.... just not in the quanities I use to. You will go thru alot of emotions............ Post them!! Let us reassure you that you are not alone!! Once you see the weight melting off.......... you will be so happy with your decision!! Good luck to you!!
  11. Congrats Jackie...I'm curious...how was your surgery experience and the last 10 days post op. Many thanks for your contribution to the thread !!!

    setting my goal to high?

I'm 4"11- was a size 22 pre surgery. I weighed 248 surgery day BMI of 55ish. I'm now 148.8. My weight loss has slowed, but I am only 15-20lbs from my goal. I initially thought I would be in a 10/12 at my goal weight, but I am currently wearing an 8/10 solidly- even in fancy designer dresses. Don't sell yourself short and know your sleeve can help you get wherever you want to go. That being said- I am having to consciously think about what I am eating and what I need to eat now to lose this last little bit, but- I know I can do it.

    setting my goal to high?

Sizes run so differently than they used to.. They got smart and yesterday's 12 is now an 8. Good news for us! It's motivating. I am 162 currently and have a 16 year old skirt in size 12, new shorts in 10's, size 8 capris and a stretchy jean skirt in a 6. I am a pear and carry my weight in my extremities, that makes a difference too.

    setting my goal to high?

I have been big all my life, the smallest I ever was in high school after starving for months was 170 and I think I wore a 10/11 but that was almost 20 years ago, the transformation you will go thru along the way will be life changing but it also takes time for your mental picture of yourself to catch up with your body, even though I know I wear a 12 in dresses and pants and a large in most shirts, I still find myself going to the larger sizes first I pick up the size I wear and it just looks so small and I think there is no way I can fit in that so take a bigger size to the dressing room and its too big, it just takes a while to get the fat girl image out if your mind.
  16. I went from 298 to 165 in 10 months. 133 pounds. The first 113 fell off by June and I was sleeved in Devember 17, 2013. I thought I was stabilizing at 185, which was GREAT, but them lost more when work got stressful. Probably 10 pounds under where my body wants to be. Who has experience gaining weight? I'd love to put on 20 pounds of muscle but the calories requirements of working out to gain muscle are huge and I have a hard enough time putting it back on. Thoughts?

    Gallbladder i

Did any of you have Gall Bladder issues prior to wls? I have had 2 really bad bouts and several not so bad bouts of Gall Bladder "attacks". I am preop (10/1/19) and after reading some info online, I decided to let the doctor rip it out on 5/9/19. The article I read stated it was better to have it out prior to wls. But, then again....you can find exactly what "you" want to read or hear on the internet.
  18. My constant companion now days! My fault though I don't get enough protein. I'm not at a stall but I'm at a SLOOOOW pace as far as losing. The good news is I'm 10-15lbs away from my goal.

  20. I wish I had the magical words for you to inspire you to greatness here. I can tell you my story, which I think is different from where you are. But I think it's good for you to know where we all come from and that we DO understand your struggles. I never considered bypass. I just refused to have my insides re-routed. So when I found the lap band I KNEW it was for me and spent nearly a year researching it to make sure that I was willing to make the necessary changes to help this wonderful little tool help me. I was scared to death to fail, yet again but this time would be surgical intervention. Once I got approved and knew that I was heading for surgery, I went into overdrive. Something I called training mode. I actually started eating the diet that I thought bandsters were supposed to eat post op so that I could prove to myself I could do it. I actually lost 19 lbs doing that and was so inspired that even the liquid pre-op diet didn't phase me other than I felt like I was starving. I was determined. As the others have said, the pre-op diet is recommended for a reason. I would recommend to you that you follow it to the best of your abilities. Get your mind in the right place and know that you're doing this for you and for your children so that they have a mom that will be there for them. A mom that can keep up with them. Post operatively the band does help, but I've also seen bandsters on this very board complaining that they feel like they're starving very shortly post op and before their first fill. This CAN lead to eating things they shouldn't. So, once again you must be determined and get yourself on the right path. As far as exercise, my doctor recommended exercise from the get go BUT that was one area that I failed miserably. Other than sporadically riding my bicycle I didn't exercise regularly until I had lost over 70 lbs. I think I would have lost more, faster if I had but that's in the past and I can only look to the future. You absolutely need to start off slow (even if it's just walking the perimeter of your yard) and find an exercise that YOU can enjoy and are willing to do on a regular basis.

    "Magic Bullet" twin

I just got a Magic Bullet type mixer at JC Penney. End cost will be about $21.00 (there is a $10 rebate). Look very similar and works nicely. Knew that many like to use the mini mixers and thought I should pass this along.

what's the longest with the band

I have been having extreme gas & diarrhea since March/April. I eat a lot of veggies & have been under a lot of stress (grandmother with lung cancer and she passed away in April, plus 3 adopted children under 10), so I chalked it up to the stress/ maybe a little IBS. Then the pain and discomfort started. the pain started in the epigastric area. Sometimes a dull nagging discomfort, sometimes burning. The pain radiates up into my shoulders and into my chest. My heart is good so I know it's not that. Within the last week I have started having nausea. Nothing serious, just generally miserable and uncomfortable. On top of everything, my band became super duper tight when the tropical depression came through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas a couple weeks ago. I had episodes of aspiration at night. I was also having back pain from an old back injury so I went and had a steroid shot. From working in a doctor's office for many years, I came to realize that when my band got miserably tight, I could get a steroid shot and it would take the inflammation out and I could go back to normal. It worked. My band is no longer tight & no more aspiration. YAY! But, the other symptoms are getting worse and are pretty much constant. I called my surgeon and I will see him on 7-15. I called the clinic where I used to work and they called in some Carafate and omeprazole for me. I have been on these for about a week and it has made the symptoms bearable. I didn't even think about gallbladder until I started searching through some of the posts on here. When I googled gallbladder symptoms it appears that I have every stinking one of them! Praise the Lord for this forum! I was beginning to freak out just a little. Especially since I have had my band for so long. If it gets worse I will go to the ER for sure. I am really tough, and stubborn, and a little shy so we will see. LOL!
  25. My DS surgery was april of 2018 with Dr. Bruce at Bariatrics of NC . All has been good, but then I rate having stomach pains really bad that lasted a long time when it happened just two months ago. It has only happened about 3-4 times, so naturally I went back to my surgeon and spoke to him about it. I thought maybe I was dehydrated , but he said NOPE, you have an internal hernia going on... and that I would need surgery as soon as I can make the appointment. Sooner than later he stressed! He could not do the surgery which disappointed me but he referred me to Dr. Lindsay Sharpe. So 1 week later I made an appointment which I had surgery done with Dr. Sharpe just yesterday 6/17/19 lasted about an hour. It started out as a diagnostic lap surgery to see exactly what was going on , and indeed it was the hernia that they found. They fixed it and I went home today and I feel a lot of pain but otherwise I just have to rest and no lifting for 3 weeks and no exercise for 6 weeks. They said because of the weight loss that it opened up a gap around my intestines causing blockage and this happened. Not sure on all details until my follow up next Tuesday but once I know ALL the details , I will post on here. Its funny now when you have surgery , you don't see the surgeon afterwards... you have to wait until follow up appointment to really get full details. his Medical assistant filled me in but not totally, so I am kinda in limbo on details. I cant wait for Tuesday to find out what he did exactly ! Has anyone had this happen to them after DS surgery?
