    This surgery is bullshit...

Now that you are logging your intake, can you post a sample of what you eat in a day? Between all of the folks here, there are decades of experience with post-bariatric weight loss. Maybe someone will be able to spot something that could be derailing your progress.

    1st month stall?

I just did a search on this site for you. There are literally 17,501 posts on this early stall. Pretty much everyone has it. I really think bariatric clinics ought to warn people about this because it happens to almost everyone, and people really freak out about it. Just stick to your plan and your weight loss will start up again. Stay off the scale if you have to. It usually lasts 1-2 weeks. Here are all the posts on it. Really - over 17,000 of them. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three-week stall

    Shrinking Violets - Part 5!

Hola friends from Isla Mujeres! I am sitting in the check-in area @ the hotel for a quick "HI' to you all before we head out to dinner. We are having a wonderfully relaxing time here... I have read 2 books (Half-Broke Horses, by the gal who wrote The Glass Castle, recommend it but not as good as GC, and Her Fearful Symmetry, by the gal who wrote the Time Traveller's Wife... a mystery/ghost story, good, too!) We rented a golf cart yesterday & drove all over the island -- ds even drove for a bit, he loved it! -- and the kids swam w/the dolphins, so cool! We spent one day lazing by the pool in the gorgeous, lush, tropical courtyard, and today we were @ the beach all day... clear, turqouis water that you can walk out for ages into... I've had at least 1 margarita &/or strawberry dacquiri for each of you so far! lol! One night we were @ dinner & I ordered a bottle of water & they were out! So... I got the 2 for 1 'ritas, instead! What else was I to do? he he he. Gotta dash... time to walk into town in search of dinner... dd says she's tired of Mexican food -- ha ha -- so we'll try something else... Miss you all! I feel refreshed, renewed, recharged... ready to tackle 2010!

    Dr. Alvarez

Thank you!! And to think my next appt with my Bariatric surgeon in CT is on October 16th....well I'll be 8 days post-op by the time that appt would roll around!! Gotta love the health insurance industry in the good old USA. Just happy that this battle will soon be over. Best of luck with your surgery! Maybe I'll see you in passing down there :-)

    In a bad depression slump...

@@venomousflowers, I can totally relate to a lot of what you are feeling. Although I am only a month out from surgery, I too feel I am losing more slowly than I should, which frustrates the he** out of me, I am just trying to follow the plan as best I can, and forgive myself for not being perfect. I also live alone, without relatives, family or my closest friends nearby. I moved from Colorado to Washington DC, and I understand how lonely and isolating that can be. However it does get better, I don't know how long you have been in Fla, but it took me about a year or year and a half to feel at home, so to speak. Even so, I still struggle with it. Sometimes it all I can do to get out of my PJs. I noticed you listed some hobbies, I went to Meetup.com and found groups interested in the same hobbies I have. I go to a knitting group, a Bridge group and a book club. It took some trial and error, but I have met several good people in these groups, and it gets me out so I don't feel so isolated. I also use FaceTime or Skype to stay in touch with my support network, my close friends and family that are all over the country. It makes me feel more connected with them than a phone call. Reading through the replies, I think finding a therapist that specializes in bariatric folks is a great idea, and I plan to talk to my surgeon about it as well. I am also familiar with the Beck Diet Solution book mentioned, though I hadn't thought about it in years. It is a book you read as you go through your journey, not read first then start. It does help, because it isn't just about what you eat and how much excercise you get, but more about your thinking and behaviors that center around food. In fact, I think I will pull it off my bookshelf today, and commit to it this time. (Yep, the first time I started to read it was yet another time I didn't really commit...sigh, bygones!) Hang in there, everyone here is cheering for you, and if you are ever coming to DC ping me!

    In a bad depression slump...

@@venomousflowers, I am so sorry that you're having a hideous day. Your having three new topics going at once and your change in screen name in the past couple of hours send out a signal. Please, please sit down, take slow, deep breaths -- as many as it takes and as often as helps calm you a little -- and sip a glass of Water. These simple, accessible actions will settle you enough so that you can think more clearly. Eating won't comfort you. It will put you in a stupor, leaving nothing unchanged when you come out of it. More than that, you'll be down on yourself for turning to food. If reading and other quiet activities don't distract or comfort you, will you go out for a walk? Burning some physical energy usually makes a good difference. While you walk, notice your surroundings -- the birds, trees, everything that catches your eye and connects you to your surroundings. The feeling that we belong in our environments means a lot. It really does seem that your meds need to be reevaluated and that therapy is the way to go. Both are important components of a support network even though they're not what we usually think of as "network." In addition you can look at shrinkyourself.com/public/welcome. (The BP linkmaker isn't working for me.) It's about dealing with emotional eating and is the product of a psychologist. There is also the book, The Beck Diet Solution, by cognitive behaviorist Judith Beck, which is a guide to coping with the same. It's meant to be read from page one rather than hopping about. People who do the exercises at both sources get the greatest benefit. Another thing is to attend bariatric support groups at hospitals in your area. They are a chance to feel less isolated and perhaps even find others who are having similar experiences. There's also the possibility that a real friendship or two can evolve. Your screen name is up to you. I'll say, though, that, if it keeps changing, BP members who want to 'talk' with you won't recognize you.
  9. Thanks Demsvmejm I remember seeing one on the list out on the peninsula, when I told MK who I was seeing, she said "oh, he's SO gorgeous!" Like that will help me concentrate! Did your Hiatal hernia help with co-morbidities? Or did you not need them. I can't find any info on the support meetings that I originally got on a list (and lost) at the Bariatric Seminar. I looked on the Munson web site, but cannot find them. If you don't know, I'll just ask the surgeons office.
  10. When were you banded, Megster? I saw the psych at "Old Town Psych Serv" Dr Mike somebody, I don't remember, but he was GOOD looking! I know there is a support group for bariatric surgery (mostly RNY people) and I asked him about a Lap Band support group. He said there isn't one around here, but he's been thinking about starting one. He said 8 out of 10 patients he sees now are Lap Banders. I live about 30 minutes from TC, but would probably attend if he started one. If there is enough interest, I bet he'd do it. Barb

Where are all the Michigan people at??

Glamourgirl: Check out the Bariatric center at Henry Ford Hospital. The U of M recomended them to me, said they had the Monopoly on this. They are very good. If I had to do it again, I would gladly go back and have my surgeon do it. Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Genaw. Go on line and you can check out their Web site., Google his name and see what you get, also you might be able to get a tape on the surgery Free since you would be considering him. "maybe!!!, don't hold me to that!" Read my journal, and see what he has done for me. Shirley...
  14. I have struggled with my weight since I was five years old. Late in 2016- at 28 years old at my heaviest weight- I had my first appointment with a bariatric surgeon in Akron, Ohio where I live and began the steps towards gastric bypass. I was so scared. But I knew that I would rather risk my life than live like this forever. I feared that my parents would bury me in 20 years and that my sister would become an only child. I knew I had to do something. I had tried everything. Between the ages of 8-28 I had tried everything under the sun. I could not lose/maintain the weight loss. On June 26, 2017- I had gastric bypass surgery. I have lost/maintained 180 pound weight loss. I have a whole new life. It is quite beautiful. I look forward to living everyday. I share my journey on Instagram - (my name on there is Maddie5088) and I also have a public Facebook Page called Mornings with Maddie. I created a blog almost a year ago that focuses on sharing my journey, creating/sharing healthy recipes. You can find it here - foodfitnessandbeauty.com I share body positivity, kindness, self love, inclusivity, healthy recipes, grocery hauls, I do monthly giveaways, how to meal prep, affordable/easy meals for bariatric patients and I do Q and As for Bariatric patients. I have felt very called to share my journey with the bariatric community! I hope you come follow along my story! It’s been a heck of a ride! Xoxo Maddie

Finally did a full protein day

My surgeon does not recommend Flinstones as they don't have the right vitamins & minerals or amounts for bariatric patients. They're not an adequate source of nutrition for us but unfortunately many docs still recommend them. For example, they don't have the right kind of vitamin A, calcium or iron and are missing selenium. There are much better complete multi-vitamins for adults than Flinstones children's vitamins. Flinstones are also not the cheapest or best tasting vitamins out there.

Finally did a full protein day

How far along were you before getting the ok to take pills? I have the bariatric capsules that I was taking prior to surgery. My nutritionist informed me that I would no longer be able to take them. So I purchased these God awful chewables. However, the E.R. doctor prescribed an antibiotic which is a capsule for my kidney infection and I took them with no problem, but my nutritionist still says I can't go back to my bariatric capsule vitamins.

    Shrinking Violets - Part 5!

Hello everyone! Today is a good day in that I am still on plan at 11:06 in the AM . . . we have to start somewhere, right :0) Landlord Installment #3 ------------------------ I got a letter from her attorney yesterday. It said that I should have given her notice that I was leaving in May of 2009 . . . and I am moving out October 31st??? He says this because she handwrote at the bottom of the lease that she would like 90 days notice if lease is not to be renewed prior to expiration (lease expired August 1st, I am leaving October 31st which is 90 days past the lease expiration and we did not execute a new lease). Anyway it is a weak argument at best on their side . . . the holdover lease clause is very specific. The lease expired August 2009 and we are now "holdover tenants - either party must give 30 days notice to terminate" per the lease." He also wrote in the letter "in non-legal terms you are sandbagging her by not giving her sufficient notice." This letter is not even on letterhead, the wording is poor and the argument is weak . . . where did she find this lawyer???? All I can say is lucky me, lol. The only thing in the letter that worries me at all is that it says she will be exercising her right to have various tradesman inspect the property for damages above normal wear and tear and I will be liable for all work performed. In the case that there is any excess of the security deposit, it will be refunded to me. So . . . it sounds like she is planning to keep my security deposit for damages - there are no damages except for an issue with a closet door that had a small divot in it from an indoor basketball hoop . . . and I already replaced it. I know the house is in good shape but I get the feeling that she is going to try to use up my security deposit. I am taking pictures of everything and my lawyer will be attending the final walkthrough and key handoff, unbeknownst to her. She has to provide an itemized list of anything deducted from the security deposit . . .if there is anything frivolous on there (what are the chances???) then I will take her to small claims court. Anyway, the lawyer I have been talking to is a company lawyer who is advising me as a friend on the side. My risk seems to be pretty small. It seems like the worst case might be the loss of a security deposit, I can live with that risk. The lawyer I have been speaking to said that this initial letter is always supposed to present the strongest case and any specific examples of issues as a scare tactic to hopefully cause me to back down and concede to any requests. There are no specific examples and anything referenced is exceedingly weak. Can you believe I actually feel more comfortable after receiving this letter, lol??? This is my first ever letter directed at me from an attorney in my life (and hopefully the last). I feel very confident that this situation is under control.

    December 2012 Post Op Group

I heard if you are using the wrong protein supplements it can slow your weightloss, I use unjury protein shakes once a day for breakfast. My husband also had the surgery in March, he snacks a lot which is a no no but he still seems to lose. Quite honestly I do not exercise, I haven't seemed to fit that in yet! ???? I have leveled off and if I start gaining I think that will be my motivation.... Also along with the shakes we take 1 bariatric vitamin a day and 3 bariatric calcium supplements a day. I order all this from unjury.com thier chocolate splendor shakes are really good! It might be worth trying something different! I always keep sugar free Popsicles in the freezer, if I feel like snacking or filling my face I eat one, usually two, they are 10 calories a pop and are better than the alternative! Hope this helps! First and foremost DO NOT GIVE UP! Good luck!
  19. All these ideas are good. But wow, I buy Bariatric Advantage meal replacements in a bag and only pay $60 a bag. I order it straight from them. I generally add frozen blueberries and cinnamon and it comes out like a brilliant blue cinnamon streusel ice cream. I guess I will get tired of it but haven't yet. It is still pricey but I figure it really isn't bad, with the things I add it works out to about $2 a serving, which is a meal. I use the greek yogurts as they have so much protein, but I love yogurt and the Greek is so much more 'yogurty'. You could add one to your shake mixes to change the flavor some. I started doing that because I tried to go vegetarian and my hair started falling out.
  20. I'm a Pinterest gal and there are a ton of bariatric pizza friendly recipes. Some might be cauliflower crust, there are ones that has a no crust or ones that use wonton wrappers. I love to cook so I've spent a good chunk of my recovery looking up recipes to try on this new lifestyle.
  21. Thanks Renewed. I don't know how the 'regular' Gas-X comes - is it a pill, a liquid, or a chewable??

Who Has Lost Over 100 Pounds?!?!

HI Theogillis7, Re: not to loose weight -- well, if you choose high calorie "slider" foods - cookies, candies, ice cream, high-fat things - you can still eat too many caloires and not loose weight. Regain - same story. Loose weight before surgery? - well, it depends on your program/bariatric center/surgeon. Some require (and insurance companies often do) a pre-op diet like 3 - 6 months supervised diet - to show that you can follow the diet changes. I had to do 3 months, and lost about 40 pounds. However, medically, you may not need to loose weight - some surgeons want you to loose some weight to decrease the fat around the liver and make the surgery easier, but not all do. Talk to you surgeon! A happy story - Christmas Eve my brother and sister-in-law who I have not seen for a year came home. I email them occasionally, but I guess the topic of the band and weight loss never came up with them -- I assumed our mother told them, or somebody else in the family. Well, apparently, he wasn't sure who I was and was about to ask, when I guess it dawned on him that it was ME! He didn't say anything, but told my mom afterwards that they were blown away with the change. Pretty funny! :-) I guess I do look a bit different now! What a difference a year can make.
  24. Hi There: I'm happy to find this group for March 2013 Post-Op new-lifers. Somehow I kept missing it when scanning the Group Listings. Now I have a home I am located in Indiana, outside of Indianapolis, and had my RNY surgery at St. Francis Hospital on March 22, 2013. My excellent surgeon is Hazem N. Shamseddeen. I had a 3-day hospital stay, from which my daughters kidnapped me for 10 days to monitor my progress, and make sure I was returning to a bariatric-friendly home. My grandkids knew where all of my stashes were and and also worked with their mom to clear-out my pantry. The 2-week AM and PM shots, Protein supplement powder, and chewable Calcium Citrate vitamins have been my greatest challenges so far. I have always hated shots and can't stand the taste of the Protein & Calcium. I recently obtained recipes for mixing the protein powder in meals and snacks, which sounds more workable. My favorite drink for years has been water with ice. I miss being able to drink it the way I'm used to--which I realize now has been turning-up the sippycup and guzzling big portions of that cool refreshing liquid. Now when I forget--I suffer with a big freeze and pain. My weight in March was 334 & now one-month later it is 304. I look forward to our exchanges of information and encouragement.

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

#27/#28 Overcoming Obstacles/Biggest Struggles (I am SO slacking!) So, my biggest obstacle is eating. Ironic, right? Up until 1/5, it was very painful for me to eat. It really made me detest food because every time I would eat, it would hurt SO BAD, so it turned me off to the idea and has made me feel like food is the enemy. I am looking for a specialty therapist to help me accept food a bit better so I am able to reach my protein goals. I have been turned down by A LOT of therapists I've contacted because I am a bariatric patient and supposed to eat less food and they don't know how to deal with that. It's sort of like being a fat anorexic. LOL. Which isn't a thing in the DSM. I continue to lose weight and I am not malnourished; I hope to nip this in the bud before it becomes a larger problem. The prospect of the pain is terrifying, however. I do have an unhealthy relationship with food, both pre and post-op. It's like I went from overeating/binge eating/food addiction to the opposite end of the spectrum. In my mind, if I eat, I will get fat again. And I can't have that. It's a large mental hurdle and a terrible thing. Very unhealthy. I guess as far as overcoming obstacles, it was dealing with and healing up from the complications. I hydrate so much more now, now that nothing hurts inside. I also felt really awkward eating out at first, but now IDGAF about asking for a box right away or eating a tiny amount. I do need to learn to eat slower around people because I feel bad making them wait, and then I get foamy later. Just a habit I need to get used to. But I am happy I feel much more comfortable eating out now. And I am able to make good choices anywhere. I've also stopped bitching about the rate of weight loss. LOL. I accept it for what it is and I am happy with how things are going. We'z gon' get thurr.
