  1. The goal of this surgery is not to feel full to the max. It's to relearn how to eat until you are sated, not overstuffed and full. I would look at the dosage & time of day you are taking the prilosec. It may need to be adjusted. When I was first sleeved I was taking my omeprazole (generic prilosec) in the morning since I didn't have any issues with acid. Once I transitioned to soft foods I noticed I would feel full in the early evenings. Occasionally I would get this stuck feeling in my chest. Reading up I realized I needed to take my PPI around 2 -3 ish and eventually I upped the dosage from 20 mgs to 40. That made all the difference in the world. I could eat what I was supposed to and I no longer had that weird full feeling. As for eating and drinking you need to do whatever it is to get in ALL your Protein. Early on I find that a combo of eating and drinking Proteins helps. I started each day with a Protein shake that I would make with FAGE 0% greek yogurt, Protein powder and Water served over ice. This was helpful to get a big does of protein and fluids at the beginning of the day. My shakes came in at 12 - 14 ounce and 31 -38 gms of protein. The rest of the day I could coast. Eat what foods I could tolerate and sip on water. Eventually I was able to work my way up to getting my 64 ounces of fluids and 100gms or more of protein.

    Gastric Sleeve 9/28/15

I am not a peanut butter fan but I have heard a lot of good things about the dehydrated peanut butter powder and that it is less fat/calories then regular peanut butter but adds protein and great flavor to shakes or what. I have ordered some unflavored Protein Powder that arrived yesterday so I'm gonna try to add that to my Greek yogurt and things today to get my protein up.

Not losing weight on pre op diet

my 2 week pre-op diet is only 1 shake for Breakfast, 1 shake for lunch, then I can have a 300 cal dinner, 3 oz of meat, like chicken or fish, a salad with only 1TB of light dressing or a light yogurt or a small piece of fruit, Seems like you all are able to eat more than I can, but in just these almost 2 weeks, I have lost 21 lbs. Good Luck!
  4. Someone suggested miralax somewhere and I KNOW myself that milk of magnesia works. I wish I had answers for the other things, I just keep trying and trying. I keep protein powder at work so I can put it in stuff and I have these mini quiches I eat on the way to work that we put protein powder in when making them. I try to pick foods with protein like greek yogurt, cottage cheese, chicken or fish. If I have V8 i put protein powder in it though it makes it taste a bit off to me but I can still drink it. I'm still figuring it all out.

    70-90g protein a day

How far out are you? A protein shake should have approximately 25 grams so two of these a day, Snacks roughly 6-10 grams; cottage cheese, yogurt, fish, meats. So your day could easily add to 70 grams and more
  6. I too was mostly eating clean. I was off artificial sweetners for several years. But for all the healthy food, my portion sizes of the delicious food made me super obese. So, clean eating can help in a lot of the micro elements of our body, and long term of the many cancers avoided, but I was creating a un-healthy monster with high triglicidates, diabetic, border-line cholesterol. You will have to bite the bullet for about 3 months, maybe more. I drink 2 Protein shakes with artificial sweetner, because my healthy one with seeds, spinach, yogurt, fruit, etc was way way too many calories. I am about 2 months out. I probably drink 1 Crystal light per week and my 2 daily shakes. The rest of the time I am eating healthy and clean. I can buy organic meat and when my portion size is greater than 2 oz, I can start to eliminate the Protein Shakes. If you want to eat a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese, you may be able to eat clean sooner.
  7. I have scrambled egg with turkey sausage crumbles; strawberries and blueberries: and one slice whole grain toast for breakfast Usually a Greek yogurt for a snack Grilled chicken or chicken salad with a salad for lunch Either a Protein drink or cheese and nuts for snack A grilled or roasted protein with salad for supper. Usually a SF Popsicle in the evening. I generally get between 750-900 calories a day; between 60-80 protein; between 50-60 carbs and try keeping my fats between 20-30
  8. Getting mixed emotions about the surgery. I am excited I'm getting it done, anxious its so close yet seems like it will be the LONGEST 1.5 weeks of my life. Totally on liquid diet since Monday- did have tomato Soup for dinner one night . Eating Greek yogurt and drinking high Protein low sugar drinks , crystal light , sugar free ice pops and sugar free Jello. I have been very private about it, only telling 1 friend and my supervisor for the time off at work. I feel uneasy discussing it . Anyone else feel like this?

Why do we have to diet?

Another important thing to know about Protein is that we can't digest more than about 25 - 30 grams at a time. So, I try to eat small, frequent meals of no more than 20-25 grams of protein at a time. The most I get is if I drink a Premier Protein shake which had 30 grams. Early out I got my protein from shakes, Protein drinks, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

    Liquid diet begins

What are your liquid diet foods? I was glad to hear that mine includes creamed soups and yogurt. Interested to see what others are allowed.

    Worried about hunger/fullness

This has been how my diet has gone the past couple days. I bought a few cans of hormel turkey chili with Beans and Goya refried black beans. I blend each with a little Water and hot sauce into a nice smooth liquid. I then divide each can into 4 small containers... so I have 4 servings of chili and 4 of black beans. I found each makes around 1/3 of a cup (not the 1/2 cup I thought I was eating per the label.) I can eat one of those servings no problem without feeling full. Yesterday my day went like this: breakfast: 2 tablespoons of hummus sipped a premier Protein rtd chocolate shake over the course of the am lunch: serving of pureed black beans w a small sprinkle reduced fat cheese (1 tblspoon)dinner: serving of pureed turkey chili w a small sprinkle reduced fat cheese (1 tblspoon)snack: half of a oikos triple zero greek yogurt a tablespoon or 2 of hummus Had no issues with any of these foods... did not feel overly full after any of it. Got in 60+ grams of protein and 600 or so calories which is what my Dr wants. Also took my Vitamins and had no issues swallowing those, including the large BA multi-Vitamin with Iron.
  12. Hi! I had my surgery 9/21, and had a two week follow-up on 10/6. I'm down 46 pounds since I started this journey on 3/31, and down 15 since the surgery. I haven't had any trouble with the protein shakes, I use EAS low carb or the Premier Protein shakes. I also found a pudding that has 15 grams of protein in it. Another way I found to get protein is to mix my yogurt with a scoop of protein(25g), add the pudding(15g),and add the Premier vanilla(30g) and that gets me to 70grams. I drink it over about 2-3 hours, cause it makes about 20 ounces of liquid. I can take about 4.5 per meal. I drink tea and water. Used to be a coffee hound(pot and a half a day), but that was the first casualty!! I do NOT like coffee!! Go figure. I tried all sorts of combos, don't like it at all. I feel like I'm a week ahead of schedule food-wise, but I spoke to my dr and he said if I can tolerate it, just eat slowly and I should be fine. I have had chicken, cream of wheat, and tomato soup. I wanted to 'eat' to see how I would do, as I have to go back to work on the 14th. I do not want any surprises there....! You could try freezing the protein shakes and then whizzing them in the blender, kinda comes out like soft serve ice cream. Found that out yesterday. One thing I did get a surprise about, was the fact I'm still hungry. Or that I get hungry, I should say. Everything I read before the Op was that the hunger would go away and may be gone for months. Ha! How about 48 hours? Day 3, I could have wiped out my kitchen! didn't of course, just had alot of chicken broth. I spoke to a friend that had gastric bypass 10 years ago, and she said that it was phantom hunger, my brain still had to catch up with my new stomach. It seems to have done that, I don't go stare into the pantry much any more. Congrats to everyone on their progress! I believe that once hurdles are overcome, we'll all do very well!! Look how far we've come so far!! We had surgery!!! We did it!! That, for me anyway, was a major accomplishment!!

    Party Appetizer----(pureed stage)

    Bring yogurt or pudding
  14. Yes, I can see the calories adding up with fancy shakes lol Mine are 192 calories each because I use 1% milk to mix them, so 1/2 of my daily calories are coming from shakes at this point. It's all I can do ... I get the other 300-400 calories with fish/seafood of some sort and maybe some cheese & yogurt ...

    60+ sleevers please help

Surgery causes skeletal muscle to be broken down in order acids to the site of injury. They promote wound healing, help the immune system, and support vital organs. During healing, new cells are created to repair the damaged cells and new tissue and blood vessels are formed. If the diet is insufficient in Proteins, healing will be delayed. Ideally, you should have slow-digesting proteins such as ultra filtered whey Protein (medical grade), dairy products like cottage cheese and yogurt, fish, poultry, and lean red meat. For loopylulu, the same would apply to you, but you need to stay away from foods that are high purines. I can send you a link if you would like. Peanut Butter would not be a good choice for you because it is loaded with purines, as are any legumes. But almonds or almond better would be good--just watch the calories.
  16. I would focus on Protein, as the previous poster mentioned. It all depends on how much you can eat at one time. If you can only get a half yogurt down, you may be eating 6-7 times per day, whatever it takes to get your protein in. It will all "come together" for you, hang in there.
  17. I actually 8 days post-op now and have started advancing my diet per surgeon's instructions. (Day 6 was when I was given green light to move on to soft dairy(yogurt, cottage cheese and apple sauce for 2 -5 days) So I am doing 2 Protein shakes for 50+grams protein(depending on which type I grab), as many zero cal liquids as I can and I added a lunch of the soft dairy which has been 2-3 bites about 1 TBSP. My instruction sheet is pretty detailed but doesn't mention how often I should add solids to my diet. Should I have another "meal" of soft dairy at this point? I am not hungry ever and need to push to get the shakes in and now a few bites of cottage cheese or yogurt. What is everyone else doing?
  18. Everything as newly WLS patient that I am given permission to eat (not literally everything but lots) is loaded with chemicals. I'm not a chemical eater. Prior WLS I wasn't a junk food junky or a fast food aficionado in fact I hadn't had a fast food meal in eighteen months PRIOR to even looking into WLS. Most of my meals were prepared at home with as many fresh ingredients as I could find; locally sourced and even grown in my backyard. I ate too much and didn't exercise. I'd make stir fry chicken with fresh snow peas, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, celery and ginger sauce but I wouldn't stop at one bowl. Or I'd make taco bowls with locally sourced pork, homemade sofritas, black Beans, tomatoes, peppers, cheese and avocado but before I ate my bowl, I'd chow down on homemade chips and salsa. In other words, my food was very minimally processed and not of the convenient variety. After WLS everything is low-fat, no-sugar, non-fat, low carb and to take those things out of foods means you have to add (mostly) unnatural ingredients. Most of that crap is bad for you and can lead to problems such as headaches, allergy flare-ups, skin problems, memory problems, dental problems, stomach problems, sleep problems and much more. I don't want to stunt my weight loss but I also don't understand how eating chemicals in lieu of carbs or fats is a healthier alternative. For example: yogurt. Regular Yogurts are loaded with sugar but sugar has not been proven to be any worse for you than the artificial crap they replace it with in "light" yogurt. In many studies it has been proven that artificial sweeteners may make losing weight more difficult. Just Google "artificial sweeteners vs sugar." Am I totally in the wrong with my thinking?
  19. Ugh, I am only allowed liquids, nothing solid, for a month. I'm supposed to lose 20 lbs in this month! (I had attempted bypass last month and my surgeon found too much fat in the omentum around the small intestine so it could not be stretched up to reach the stomach) I get 4 Protein shakes/day (I can't do milk or soy so I use almond milk with 2 and Water with the other 2). Then I can have several servings of low cal yogurt, sugar-free pudding, plain oatmeal (1/2 cup) or unsweetened applesauce. and V-8. I've lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks but have to kick it up somehow to reach 20 lbs in 2 more weeks. Very hard to stick with this, I want something to actually chew.

    Confused!

Programs are different. I didn't have a pre-op diet other than the typical NPO 12/24 hours prior to surgery. It was recommended to increase protein and veg. So do not worry if you don't have a pre-op diet. Some of us don't. It's also not uncommon for programs to recommend transitioning to real food as soon as possible. A year out I still start most days with a Protein Shake, but this was my habit pre-op. I make my own concoctions in the nutra bullet before I go to the gym. When I do supplement it's with Isopure unflavored powder. I'm vegetarian so most of my protein is from eggs, Beans and yogurt. Shakes are a personal preference and taste. You have to consider whether you want powder or RTD, milk based or clear drinks. The major ones are Premier Protein, Isopure, Syntrac nectar and unjury.
  21. So I'm 6 days post-op (Oct 1st) and doing great. Went home around noon on Oct 2nd, felt awful the first few days home, but today and yesterday have been great. Went back to work today feeling physically normal. My concern right now is regarding hunger and fullness. I had my first post-op appointment yesterday and was placed on a stage 2 (pureed) diet. I've read through a lot of posts on this forum, and most talk about being physically unable to eat more than a couple tablespoons for the first few weeks even months post-op. They also talk about having zero hunger/cravings. I'm at the other end of the spectrum. I'm already able to eat in one sitting a 1/2 cup serving of either pureed black Beans, greek yogurt, or hummus etc without feeling overly full. I don't know what my limiting capacity is, as I have not pushed beyond the 1/2 cup yet. I'm also finding that my hunger/cravings are returning. Yes, a lot of it could just be mental hunger, but I swear some of it is my body telling me I need to eat more. Am i being overly paranoid? My doctor did not seem concerned that I'm able to eat 1/2 cup of food right now, but it seems like I'm abnormal compared to most on this forum.
  22. I did not follow the 30/30 rule until I was eating solid foods. I am almost four months post op and I still drink a shake every morning because I cannot physically consume enough food to get all of the required Protein. I have had a really hard time with meat, so I am still eating alot of cottage cheese, cheese and yogurt. Just follow your body, it will tell you when you need to begin following the 30/30 rule.

    Please Help!

I have been using the unjury strawberry lemonade powder in my Water bottle. It was fine the first few days but now the sweetness is nauseating to me. This morning I mixed it with greek yogurt and coconut milk in a smoothie and it was MUCH more tolerable. I think the thicker consistency helped me. The powder in nothing but water was just yucky.

    What comes after clear liquids?!?!

such a creative idea with the yogurt and Protein yum.... although i hate yogurt.... BUT things have changed and with limited options one must adjust right?
  25. When I was on my soft food stage I ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese. Do you have a refrigerator at work? If not, you could take an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack.
