    I'm confused

Julie - I had a total hysterectomy eight months prior to my band surgery. I did not plan it that way, but that's how it worked out. At the time of my hysterectomy, bariatric surgery wasn't even a thought in my mind. I had female issues, and had to resolve them. It wasn't until a few months later that I decided to move forward with WLS. As far as what to do first, you need to work that out with your gynecologist and your bariatric surgeon. Depending on the reason for a hysterectomy, that might be something you need to do first. Whatever is best for your health, is the way to go. Only your doctors can provide you with that direction. As for sleeve vs. band, that is a very personal choice. If you are okay having 70-75% of your stomach removed, then maybe that is a good option. For me, I wanted something that I had more control over. I also had plication done with my band, which, I believe, has made a tremendous difference overall. But I do sleep much better at night knowing that the whole thing can be reversed. One other thing to keep in mind..... Weight can be gained with each and every one of these surgeries. I'm at the 10 month mark, and already having times where I push it. I saw my doctor last week and got "the talking to". After time, we get used to the new "setup", and (if we're so inclined), find ways to eat around it. The same goes for the bypass, sleeve, band.....all of it. My sister works with a woman who had the sleeve, and she's put back quite a bit of weight. She can't eat a lot at one time, but she grazes on crap all day long. No matter which surgery you choose, it's ALL up to you/us. If we don't change our heads, there is no miracle out there to make us lose weight. It's a big decision, so just make sure that you do all the research. As you already see with your sisters, you can't go on any particular person's success with any surgery, because we are all different. I wish you all the best :-)

    Post-op pain

When I first came out of surgery I was in a LOT of pain from the gas. Once I got to my room and was hooked up to my pain pump I was fine, I pressed that thing every 10 minutes. I did have a lot of pain when I tried to sit up and get out of bed but it was minimal for the most part. The gas was the worst.

Hi!! I was banded by Dr. Bagnato the next day!!! He is wonderful!! Glad you are doing well - be sure to join up with the fellow October bandsters under the monthly lap band support board/group. Welcome to the site and I know you will find everyone to be uber helpful - I know I sure do!!! So how much have you lost already? As of my post op on Thursday I was down 19 lbs (I was 321.8 when I started the preop diet and was 303 when I weighed in at my 1wk post op - so just about 19lbs).... Keep in touch!!! Amy

    New in Georgia

Sghatl - I had two abdominal hernias. My doctor said it was a real mess inside, but from what many others are saying, I don't think it affected my recovery very much. My first week was pretty miserable, but now at 10 days, I'm almost feeling normal. Good luck with yours.

    Confused...Excited...Lost.......

Trish, I know! I have been doing the pre op diet my doc ordered for me and I have actually gotten used to eating on the atkins induction. LOL everytime I feel like complaining I remember that in 10 days I will be on liquids. I am trying to make all of the nessecary preparations and think ahead to somethings I need to get out of the way that I wont be able to do for 4-6 weeks. Like stretching my canvases. Keep me updated on a specific date and I will write it on my calendar.

I think you are absolutely doing the right thing. My parents were both very morbidly obese and I was overweight for most of my life too. Unfortunately there was not the opportunity for this kind of thing when I was young, so had to wait till I was 54 to have, but I am very happy now. How much weight do you have to lose? They told me I would lose around 70 lbs., but I have lost almost 90 lbs. I am eight months out from my surgery and my weight loss has slowed way down. I think I am about where I am going to be now. I went from a size 20 to a size 10.

    Started soft foods today

I just started week 5. Lost 17 pounds in the first 28 days. I tolerated liquids well so doctor gave OK to start puree on day 10 (instead of day 15) and soft foods a week later (day 17). At first I could only eat a couple of tablespoons of food (the entire day) but now can eat a full egg with some additional egg whites added. The amount you can eat will increase with time and will vary depending on what it is. I can eat about 5 oz of yogurt but only 3 oz of meat. I still drink a protein shake almost every day in order to meet my 60 gram daily protein requirement. I tried eating meat twice in one day to get in protein, boy did I pay a price. I felt miserable the entire evening and into the night. I keep my calorie count between 500-600 per day. Give your body time to adjust. And yes, food does taste good after having had just liquids for a couple of weeks.

    Cleaning my closet

I recently went through the same process. I didn't try much on. My weight has changed so much over the past 10 months (when I started taking off weight pre-surgery) that only currently purchased items fit. The thing I DID enjoy was looking at my old clothes and realizing how much more I like what I have now. Previously, ALL my clothes were a compromise to my size. If they fit, I bought them. It is only now, with nearly 140 lbs gone, that I can enjoy the pleasure of buying clothes because they look more like me. And I still have 60 lbs to go! I can't begin to imagine how it will feel to buy clothes yet at goal. I try to enjoy the process... Can't focus too much on the future.
  11. Just coined the term for those of us using the metric system and finally and gratefully seeing a number below 100 kg 😋 My metric Underland was reached this morning 🤛 99,9 kg (220lb), 10 days post op MGB (SW 104.2kg, 230lb) Next stop: Onederland 😁
  12. I had RNY and my weight loss just seemed to level off in time. I never set a goal but I am happy with the amount of weight I lost. I remember my nutritionist telling me that if I lose any more weight to call her immediately. I figured I was at bottom then but next thing I knew I lost 10 more pounds. When I went in for my next checkup, they seemed to be pleased with my weight loss.
  13. Hello all, I'm 10 weeks out from RNY and overall doing pretty good. My problem is I can't plan my food menu because one day I'll like a food, like eggs, and the next day it repulses me. Can't stand the smell of it. I'm like this with almost everything I'm eating. I can NOT do shakes ever again. I tried again about a month ago and gagged and threw it out along with the damn shaker bottle. Same with soups and broths. Can't even look at them. ONe day I'll do good with chicken and the next it sickens me. I'm often hungry, but eating makes me feel like crap. I enjoy nothing. I eat slow and don't eat until I am too full, so it's not like I'm overeating and getting sick from a food and then not wanting to eat it again. It makes me sad. Frustrating as hell. I'm hungry now, but nothing sounds good, looks good or tastes good. I often feel crappy after eating. Nauseated. Again, not eating until I'm too full, so it doesn't make sense to me. My dietician wants me to get in more protein but I can't figure out how. There is a part of me that wishes I never would've had the surgery because I'm so sick of feeling like crap. I have low/no energy. I'm taking all my vitamins and supplements. Anyone else have this problem? Will it get better over time? I have no idea what I'll take to work for lunch tomorrow. The chicken I made yesterday is grossing me out now. UGH!! Advice? I'm 34 pounds down now. I'm stalled but feel like it's because I'm not eating enough. I cannot do yogurt or much cheese as I have a hard time with milk products as well. Ack! One more thing I'll add is that I found I can't tolerate sugar free things either. I don't know if it's the xylitol, artificial sweeteners or what. Not eating sugary things either.
  14. I only had to do a 5 day preop diet and I lost 10 pounds in those 5 days. It actually wasn't too hard. Clear liquid diet with 3 protien shakes a day. Could be any kind of protien shake as long as each shake was under 200 calories. I'll admit, I cheated a bit because I drank the Oh Yeah! shakes and they were 220 calories each. Other than that, all Clear liquids. You can have as much broth (add a bullion cube for flavor), sugar free Jello, black coffee, and unsweetened tea as you want. Try to get at least 60 oz of Water each day. Most of what you're going to lose is water weight anyway. All the sodium from holiday foods will do a number on you. That's why so many people dropped so much in just a few days. When you start a diet the first thing to go is the water weight. Good luck to you. I know it sucks to be sick right before surgery. I had a sinus infection and I was scared to death to go to the doctor about it because I was afraid they would postpone my surgery so I took cold pills (non asprin kind) every four hours and used a netti pot twice daily to get rid of it without antibiotics.

    Yay! (:

I know she said the surgery would be little easier if I lost 10% of my fat before surgery but I don't understand why so much tho if I lose that then why do the surgery

Major Headache From My Pre-Op Diet

I am so glad I'm not the only one who got this migraine. I am on day 2 of 10 day diet, and last night I had the worst migraine in the world, I woke up this morning without one, but I think that's because I cheated and ate food last night around dinner time. I was so positive this diet would be a walk in the park... sigh...

Thinking of moving to pureed foods

I too had to go to puree early at day 10!! My nut said it was ok but when I wanted to go to soft early she said no because we don't want to worry about stretching our pouch too soon. With pureed foods I made it a month out for soft!! It was hard but worth it. 2years from now I don't want to wonder if I messed up and that's why the weight loss is slowing down!

    My Post-Op Plan...whew!

My surgeon is even more strict, I think. 1st week post-op was just Water, broth and diet Jello. I went to see him today (9 days after surgery) thinking that, yipee, I might be permitted some yogury or cottage cheese or creamy soups. But no. Not for me yet. At this point I may only add Protein drinks to my list. For another 3 weeks! And then, when I hit one month post-op, I am then allowed to add cottage cheese, ricotta cheese and yogurt. Nothing else. At 6 weeks I can add the following: string cheese, refried Beans, Soup (lentil, split pea, black bean, miso or egg drop, and tofu. And then, at week 7, I can add chicken turkey, fish and eggs. And all during this time, no caffeinated coffee. *sigh* On the upside, I've lost 19 pounds in 9 days!!

    I'm confused

well, i was well over 330 pounds and my dr wanted me to do a bypass due to my size...i was as wide as i am tall.....and the band/pliacation i have works...the dr told me how to use it for best results and that is exactly what i am doing.....any WLS is a wonderful thing but no one WLS is better than the other...any WLS can and does have complications and sometimes not..you cant spend your life wondering will it slip, will i this or will i that......i was at a point to where i was in serious trouble.......i stopped hem hawing and got on with saving my life..... larger BMI people can lose weight faster than those who do not have as much to lose (i am now where some are just banded and it took me 19 months to get here)...we all lose weight 1/4 pound at a time (whether its the sleeve, the bypass, the band or nutri system......the same way as we gained it, 1/4 pound at a time.. to me, as long as one loses weight, gets healthy and changes their attitude from i cant and i never have been to yes i will....then whatever WLS one gets, has that chance to get well..as its about getting healthy, not being skinny or thin.......i wish you all the best.

    My Gastric Sleeve Story

Well.. month 2 is over, and it hasn't been near expectations. I feel fine, and great.. I get frustrated very easily these days.. I'm of course on solid foods now, and I'm still having trouble adapting to going out to eat with my family or for work functions. I order food, and usually don't realize that there is no way I'm going to be able to eat it.. then for some reason I get frustrated when I can't eat it.... Is that weird? It still hasn't sunk in to my head I guess that I just can't eat a lot. Also, I stalled.. hard. Literally the day after my last post, the scale stopped moving.. and it didn't move for a couple weeks.... I went I believe 16 days only fluxuating up or down 1lbs... however, eventually it started moving again. and today I'm down to 238lbs... 305 before pre-op diet, 283 day of surgery, and 238 today, giving me a total loss of 67lbs since June 16th... and 45lbs since surgery, 30 in the first month, 15 the 2nd month. I was really hoping to take out another 5lbs or so before my 2nd month ended.. but that's ok... I'm 18lbs from my goal weight, in just over 2 months... If I can do more, great.. but I'm perfectly content at being 220lbs.. I'm a big guy by nature, and I honestly don't even remember being less than that, when I was skinny before all the weight gain, I remember being about 224.... and that weight suits me just fine. So I've went from wearing a XXXL shirt, down to an XL, sometimes a L depending on the brand. I've lost 10 inches from my waste, and went from a size 44 jeans, to a 34... so things are going well.. I've haven't started at the gym yet, like I wanted to, this relocation has been hard, and I haven't even started my new job yet, and money is just kind of tight... I start my new job next Monday, and plan to get gym memberships out of my first check. My main issue, have been beverages... foods haven't been an issue, however, I find myself sometimes drinking high sugar drinks, especially slurpees, lol... usually once a week I'll drink a slurpee, and it's hard to resist drinks like at Sonic and stuff, which is a big favorite for drinks while we're out and about... the diet cherry limeades are good.. but sometimes I just don't want to drink them.... and I'll get a cherry coke or something... Carbonated drinks I've had no problems with, I drink them fairly often, not daily, but at least 2-3 times a week I'll have a diet coke or a coke zero.. and no issues... Anywho, I'm going to work hard and try to cut these vices and get to my goal weight this month... here's hoping for the best!

    Day 1,

I arrived at the hospital at around 6:30 Am. I was pretty nervous but the staff just shuffles you along as it is all very routine for them. the surgery itself only lasts about 35 minutes, but I was under for around an hour. - As soon as I woke up they had me get up and walk, I probably did 20 laps around the hospital. I'd read so many horror stories of trapped gas that there is no way I wanted that to happen. - I'm not sure if it was luck, or the walking but thank goodness I did not have to bad of pain from the gas. - (although I did look like I was 6 month pregnant... my stomach was soo swollen. Of course the incision points are sore and especially where the port is. I had HORRIBLE nausea when I woke up, I was terrified I was going to throw up. My pain was about a 3-4. but I could hear the guy next to me in recovery who had also had a band put in said his pain was a 10... so the pain no doubt varies dramatically. The doctor gave me script for some liquid pain killer but it makes me so sick to my stomach I think I'm going to tough it out.. I'd rather feel uncomfortable than throw up and rip my stitches. One odd thing, I keep getting the hiccups. I've read on here that is a sign that you are "full" but I haven't eaten anything so, it is probably my body just trying to adjust. I came home... walked a bit, and then took a nice long nap.... All in all, I really can't complain!
  23. Thanks! To clarify, I think I meant panniculectomy which (from what I read...could have changed now) can at times be approved due to it causing back pain ext. That's great progress! I am about 10-15lbs heavier than your starting weight. I've been trying to be more active again the last month or two, but after you don't for so long it is hard getting back into walking and not exhausting yourself. Also not confident enough to do gym memberships or more public things short of us walking around where we live. Our insurance changed this year to one that isn't as good, I feel, but am hopeful if I can find an in-network option, I can move forward if decided. I messaged them today to see what info I could get on it. Thankfully, I stopped doing fast food a lot over the last few years...but that doesn't mean I don't pick up things that I binge on or that are quick to eat due to general laziness on my part and because I'm too tired after work to cook. Frozen items like pizza have been our go-to off and on weekly. As a stress eater, snacks are my downfall. Thankfully, never had acid reflux but that's good to know, something I hadn't read or seen!
  24. My doc allows "mushy" foods at 10 days out if you can tolerate them. He says to dip and lick and be cautious and can go back to liquids if there is any pain.
