  1. I was on vacation in Hawaii.. mid-trip felt a bit weird and took a test. Definitely put a spin on the rest of my trip! lol I have/had pseudotumor cerebri with papilledema, which is why I had RNY surgery in the first place. I was down a total of 120 pounds (with 30 more to go) when I got the big news that I didn't anticipate. So I immediately contacted and OBGYN and began figuring out what I needed to do for myself to make sure this would be a healthy pregnancy. I was glad to learn that many of the vitamins I was already taking post-op sort of mimic pre-natals, but I found a great liquid pre-natal and changed my vitamins around a bit. Went back to my nutritionist and am still figuring out my diet, but I log everything and make sure I meet my daily goals. So far everything looks good, baby has a healthy heartbeat at 6 weeks. The doctor said if I follow what I've been doing I will only likely gain 15 pounds or so... hopefully. Just wondering what anyone else's experience with this might be? I've read lots of posts about finding out about being pregnant, but not too much on the journey or how things wound up afterwards for post-bariatric patients. Bad enough my family is scarring me for life thinking about how most babies in my family were no less than 10 pounds at birth..... gotta love family!

    Stall!

WOW! This ain't no only! You've lost over 5 # a week! Walk around with a bag of sugar for a while as a hint! Your body not not consistantly lose weight, so just keep plugging, and all will be fine. (If you can, don't weigh every day... nothing like seeing a big drop later)... Good luck to you!

    Struggling with liquid diet

I am with you on this one. I am doing pretty well so far. BUT I am finding I am waking in the night hungry. I have been on it since Tuesday. The weight loss has been great (10 lbs!) but I am quickly tiring of Protein shakes. I still have to make dinner for the family which is hard. Yesterday my kids came home from church wanting to make treats for other families. So...we had brownies AND Cookies in the house AND halloween candy! I did well and didn't have any but it was hard. Hang in there. You are not alone. broth will quickly become your friend.

    Waiting For My Iv

Thanks Lissa! I am doing pretty good. thanks to you and the boards, I haven't had any big surprises and have gone really slow with everything. I will say I can't wait to get this drain out on Monday! I focused intently on getting in enough fluids that I wouldn't get dehydrated when I first got home and didn't worry about Protein for the first day. Then yesterday I started trying to get in protein little by little. I wasn't terribly successful but it was a start and I felt like I did pretty good on fluids for 3 days postop. Just trying to improve a little each day and get to where I am supposed to be so I can fully rock my sleeve!!! I sometimes get a little freaked out that I am actually POST op! I have gone through WLS now and I am actively losing weight quickly. I feel like I have had a "when I lose the weight" mindset for most of my adult life and its truly HERE NOW! I am so excited to become the new me!

    AETNA SoCal ***

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and this is my first post. Was just wondering if anybody on here has Aetna so-cal H. M. O. and if so could they share their stories on the journey to approval. I have my primary care physician on board, met with my NUT and she approved, had my psych evaluation and she approved, had my sleep study and was told I didn't need the cpap machine but when I hit REM sleep in the early morning hours, I stop breathing 8x's an hour and so my oxygen decreases during this time and to solve this issue I will need to lose weight. I am 36, 5'5 and weigh 225 (at my heaviest I was 245). I am pre-diabetic, and have high cholesterol (but not on meds at this time, but have been in the past). I am on meds for asthma. I am waiting to meet with the surgeon and to find out of they will approve the surgery. So my question is this, for anybody who has a similar situation as mine, how hard was it to gain approval? Is there anybody who has the same insurance that can shed some light on how difficult or easy it may be to get approval? Just trying to gain some knowledge and advice during the waiting game so any feedback would be very much appreciated.
  7. Immediately !! I coughed that whole first night after surgery and kept my roommate up it was so bad. I ended up having a revision 11 months ago because of esophagitis D and a hiatal hernia. I was afraid of getting the bypass too but as far as weight loss and maintaining it has been much easier. I honestly liked the sleeve better because of the restriction and being able to eat all foods, but the flip side of that was I constantly had to watch my weight and struggled just to stay around 170. I was 180 the day of my revision and this morning I weighed in at 150.8. This is the lowest I have ever been and usually maintain 155 to 159 with no stress. I had a temporary crown put on 2 weeks ago and dropped 8 lbs because I am not getting the food I usually eat because of pain. I go in on Monday for the permanent crown and am sure my weight will bounce back up. lol Good luck to you and whatever surgery you choose.

Anyone use a Health Rider for exercise?

It's been so long ago I don't remember a lot....the legs yes. I don't recall anything happening to the abs. It was pre-band and I was eating low-fat meals (less than 20grams fat/day.) I managed to lose weight with it and long walks. Nothing really counts pre-band. I did get wobbly legs but that's about all I can remember.
  9. Awesome job! Congrats! What a great achievement this is! Wish you all success in your weight loss journey!
  10. Has anyone had a stall after 3rd week post op and how long was the stall? I had surgery august 5th and then the stall happened in the 3rd week and now its the 6th of November and I'm still in the stall I was 320 pre op 314 on day of surgery and currently 295 my clothes are getting loose and my lower back pain is gone but the scale has not moved more than 295 and 290 I know it takes time and a lot of work but it is very frustrating to me that I haven't lost the weight by now:( I can drink as much as before surgery without restriction and my meals have been cut in half with restriction I'm more active eating less food and just drink Water or coffee but nothing is working Is there away to jump start and get out of a stall because i need one any suggestions will be great thnx

    Questions after first fill

I have exactly the same issue. I have 4cc in a 10cc band and I have no restriction. I can still have large portions of food at a time (3 meatballs, rice, beans and a tortilla) I love my mexican food. Its a bit disappointing that I can still eat all that. I am loosing weight (surgery on 11/03/08; lost 40 pounds) so I am not sure about "fills" and "restriction". This whole experience is not what they make it out to be when you go to the pre-surgery seminars. I have yet to get full on 1 or 2 ounces of food.
  12. Well after a totally ****-tastic weight loss for May, I am finally on the move downward again. HOLLA! What did I change?? Journaling. I am journaling every little morsel that hits my lips. I didn't journal at all in May (and I knew I was snacking too much). I paid for it with a 4lb weightloss for the month. Two weigh-ins into June and I'm already down 8lbs. Have to face it...must be honest with myself on what I'm eating and it all works out.

Why do we have to wait?

If you get pregnant now you will be high risk because of your weight which is still high and the fact you had surgery. That is really going to suck a lot of the enjoyment out of being pregnant. High risk pregnancy is no fun, it is a lot of testing, doctor visits and restrictions. Wait, at least 6 months until you are healed so you can eat enough calories to support a pregnancy.
  17. Katie Loesch-Meyer

Why do we have to wait?

I'm sure you meant "they lie" jokingly/tongue in cheek? I'm sure it's true that it only lasted six months for you and I'm sure others have had that experience too... But many of us did have a year and some say they've had 18 months... I'm sure it's lasted even longer for some. Everyone's experience is different. Doesn't mean they lie. Sorry, just meant you can't count on it. I'm sure some get longer than others. In group I'm in, of people who all had surgery in the same month, we all slowed down around 6 months or so out. Different surgeons, different starting weights. We all had to work much harder at it after that. I don't mean weight loss stops, but that the easy and fast weight loss becomes slower, harder weight loss.
  18. Sophie74656

Why do we have to wait?

well think about it. For a year or so after surgery your body is in a state of weight loss, getting used to suddenly eating so much less, and fixing all the issues that being overweight had caused. Add being pregnant on top of that, it's probably more than a body can handle. I was told that it's best to wait until you are out of the phase of "rapid" weight loss because it would be very difficult to get the proper nutrition to sustain a healthy pregnancy doesn't that make sense if you think about it? Much better to wait, like the doctor's say (they usually know what they're talking about) and have a happy, healthy pregnancy

    Stall!

I stayed with my calories between 600 to 800 but closer to 600 per day and my carbs under 20 until I hit my goal weight. I also exercised for an hour daily starting in month 7 (walking 5 miles a day before I started with the gym). I hit goal at by month 10. Starvation mode is a myth, when you have a lot of fat on your body you will convert that fat to energy. Starvation mode will happen when there is no more excess fat to use.
  20. I was banded 1/19 and have lost 33 lbs. ... I haven't noticed any differences yet. But I think a lot of "normal" people don't like to see us loose weight because they don't have you to feel superior to anymore. And people who are as heavy or heavier as we are have issues with it because we're breaking the so-called "rules" by leaving the fat thing behind and "abandoning" them.

    Gaining Weight Unbelievable!

I always gain regardless of my diet the week before my TOM. Water weight. Could this be the culprit?

    scared

I am two yrs post op. In the last 6 months I've gained 30 lbs. I know how I got here and what to do to loose the weight. I'm nervous I permently stretched out my sleeve. Does anyone know if it can go back to post op. I'm to embrassed to go to the doctors office to yell them about this.
  23. Hi there everyone, I have not posted here in awhile, but I have had general success with my lapband. 110 pounds lost so far and still going down. I have had the lap band for 8 months. During that 8 months, I had no fills because I was prone to reflux. I have been tested to see if the reflux was affecting my lapband, but it turns out it is controllable with nexium and avoiding spicy food. Due to no fills, I can pretty much eat whatever kind of food I like. So I have to be careful with my choices. I do always hit a restriction point. I never PB or throw up ether. I'm not posting here because I am plateauing or I am gaining. This is more a worry over keeping the right amount of food eaten at each meal. The main thing I am wondering now is, am I slowly going over a cup of food per meal and I don't even know it? The problem I am having is, most things I am eating cannot be measured in a cup. Like due to a odd shape of carrots or broccoli, I cannot jam them into a measuring cup to see how much exactly the space they are taking up is. Nor can I do this with chucks of chicken, a steak or boiled eggs. I have to relay on my band to tell me where the restriction point begins. Like sometimes I can only eat 1 and half eggs. Other times, it is 2 eggs and some peanuts. I wonder if my restriction point is being accurate or is my band being fickle? There are times where I almost feel too full or I need to burp, but this never results in food coming back up. The full feeling usually goes away after the burp. Does anyone think it would be wise if I started weighing my food? Are there scales you can buy that can tell you how much onces of food you are eating at a time? How expensive are they and where do you buy them, if they are available? Do a lot of people use them here? Since measuring in a cup is just not going to cut it for me. Any help would be appreciated.

    Surgery Canceled

I sure hope this works out okay. I find it.... annoying.. that you have this kind of requirement. I had to do a 2 week liver shrinking diet - for my own safety. I had no weight loss requirement, although i did lose 8#. I found it very very difficult but I was very motivated to get that liver shrunk. It makes me kind of mad that some programs want you to prove that you are surgery worthy by losing certain amounts of weight. I don't think there is ANY evidence to show that it improves your long term success. Most of us are professional dieters, so what the heck does losing 10 pounds prove? Rant over. Good luck on your surgery - looking forward to welcoming you as a new sleever!
  25. I am feeling very frustrated and scared that I will not loose the weight...I have been taking in around 1100 cal a day, excercising. I have not been totally compliant (like eating a homemade chocolate chip cookie) However, I need to LIVE and find quality of life. I am working on keeping my Water up, and in intense boot camps...so please tell me this is going to break soon? Down about 25 lbs in a month, but all of that was lost in 2.5 weeks from surg. I have not lost anything since 11/6 and had my sleeve on 10/22. So maybe I am just being crazy, but I feel like I am mindful of my food, Protein first...limited intake and still no change on the scale. Looking for advice from those who have been in my shoes...
