I was diagnosed 2 years ago with Lymphedema in my lower legs. My cankles (how I call them) were huge and my calves soon became extremely large- I saw the vascular surgeon and he referred me for therapy- I went EVERYDAY for 2 weeks for banding and then wore compression stockings every day- Once the compression stockings started getting stuck where my legs meet my foot they told me I needed something more at night- ( I was wearing my stockings from 7:30 am t0 7:30 pm) so I got these Reed sleeves- they are like boots for your calves and have pressure straps that go up mimicing the banding and stockings- They are very cumbersome and I hate them plus they fall off at like 2am only after being on for about 4 hours because the swelling goes down. I was told my problem was due to my having auto immune problems, thyroid cancer treatments and being over weight and that when I lost weight the swelling would get better- My question is that if any of you have lympnedema and how long if you were cured did it take? I know there is no "cure" so to speak you just manage it from becomming worse and worse but I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO over it and am looking so forward to wearing skirts and sandles but am still too conscious of my lower legs to do so... Pie Chart Question For Mfp
tbstacks replied to tbstacks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That was what I was thinking. My doctor never gave me a set amount of protein that I need to be getting. The most he said at my follow up appointment was to be eating three meals a day and limit snacking as much as possible. I feel a bit lost compared to most people here on the forum. I guess I must educate myself. I only saw the dietitian once and that was while I was still hopped up on pain meds day one in hospital, and she just gave me a gastric bypass nutritional info packet, and said to go by that. It was disheartening. -
I "spontaneously" dumped (at least I think that's what it was) once about 4 weeks after surgery. It's now about 10 weeks after surgery and it's not happened again. I say "spontaneously" because I have no idea what triggered it. I'd been eating a sugar-free popsicle every day since surgery, it was my daily treat. That morning, I'd had a few blueberries with low-fat low-sugar Greek yoghurt (something I'd eaten successfully before). About 3 hours later, I had my usual popsicle and within about 15 minutes... WOW. Chest pain and pressure, nausea, the sweats, drooling... it was awful. (But no diarrhea.) It went on for about 90 minutes and I was pacing my house, trying to lie down, getting back up, hanging over the toilet, etc, until suddenly -BLEH- the popsicle came back up in one swoop. I immediately felt 100% better! I told my surgeon about the experience when I had a follow-up visit a week later and all he said was that he didn't know why that would have happened. If it ever happens again, my finger is going down my throat and I'm getting it over with quickly. Anyway, my surgeon's info booklet warns to stay under 5g of sugar to avoid dumping. It doesn't mention carbs or fats.

Hello, anyone have anything they did - or wished they had done as you started to drop the weight after surgery? I'm about 8 weeks out and just wanted to reach out to those further along or at maintenance and get thoughts, tips and tricks for success. Thanks

All of a sudden I'm having cramps on right side just below ribs. No new foods or anything. Anyone else experience this type of thing? My wife wants me to go to the ER but its not that bad, just uncomfortable.

Welcome to Bandlandia....! You are still healing, the first 6 weeks are to heal not to lose weight, any weight lost at this time is great, but not to be expected. I am 11 months post op and I thought in the beginning, What have I done???? I felt uncomfortable, thought I could feel the band, thought I would always feel the band. Now I dont even know it is there and I am 100% no... make that 150% glad I had it done and would do it over again in a heartbeat. You too will feel "normal" again, just give it time, you are only a week post op. You're doing great. Some of what u may be experiencing is the Gas they put in you during surgery, that has to work its way out of your body and can be a heavy bloated feeling.

Congrats! Thats my 1 year anniversary too! I love my band and it was just what I needed to get this weight off! I started using myfitnesspal.com to track what I eat and it has helped me lose over 7 pounds the last 4 weeks. I was overeating Yogurt! too many carbs.

Anyone Not Have A Pre-Op Diet?
vanb0052 replied to Lizzygirl079's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so jealous of all of you!! My surgeon actually is doing the 2 week liquid diet to show it can be done and to get a better understanding of what he's asking his patients to do. Kind of cool Good luck to you all with your surgeries! I hope to get my date next month -
Ok, so I started Insanity and Jillian Michaels: Body Revolution and switch between the 2 throughout the week... I'm kind of frustrated cause I've been really working out the last 2 months and I've been plateaued for the last month. Does anyone else had this happen. It's frustrating me. I also kicked up my Protein intake to 70+g a day... HW 332; CW 242; SD 02/28/2013; GW 175

I was having potato soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes and farina Cereal by the end of the first week. Not very much at a time, but enough to make me feel better. I mainly followed the Cornell University guidelines. http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf Everyone is different. I certainly wouldn't over do it or add anything too substantial. Listen to your body and act accordingly.

I got my first fill today at 4 weeks post op. I had 6 cc's put in and wow I felt restriction right away, I am almost afraid it's too tight but I am getting food in and don't feel sick there is just a slight feeling of pressure. I drank a glass of water and ate soup for dinner and it all went down so now we shall see after I sleep on it. So exciting!!!!

I had someone tell me recently that they take a suppliment called Chlorella. Have any of you used it? Any suggestions would help me, I need to get enough energy to exercise !

Having Trouble Drinking enough Water
jahair replied to kimmiechelle's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Kimmiechelle, Congratulations on getting your lapband! I had trouble with Water the first week or so after being banded. I couldn't seem to get much down at a time and gas always seemed to immediately follow. Be patient-- it goes away. Why not try SF popsicles once in a while, or switch off with warm drinks like hot tea? Have you tried something like Gas-X? I lived on it the first couple of weeks along with my heating pad. Here's what I figured out about the constipation -- yes, lack of fluids can contribute to constipation as does the pain medication but the real culprit was there was not enough "mass" in the digestive system to move things along until I got onto mushies. No duh! Liquid diets don't leave mass! When I called my doctor's office complaining about the big C, I was told to eat fruit. By then I was on mushies, so I took my fruit and put it into the blender and blended it to death. That and walking, finally moved things along. Every single one of us is obsessed with seeing how much weight comes off after we get banded. Some people lose a lot and some hardly any. Everything I've read on these boards is to view the first 4-6 weeks as healing time. It's about getting the band seated properly and learning how to manage yourself. Any weight lost is a bonus!! Most folks get on the weight loss bandwagon after the first or second fill. Be kind to yourself and try not to let your whirling brain make you crazy. This part will quickly pass, but it must be endured. Check back in and let us know how you are doing. Jo Ann -
Brian - It is great to have you and your expertise! Can you explain why it is so important to have the protein shakes? I actually do enjoy them so it doesn't bother me but I'm just curious. I have lost 80+ pounds in the past without ever consumming a protein shake. Why would this stall the scale? I am also on the verge of insanity. I have not lost a single pound since a few weeks after surgery (when I started mushies to be exact). I work out 4-5 days a week with 30 minutes of elliptical training. I consume around 1200 calories a day and log what I eat. I drink at least 8 ounces of water/SF fluid a day....and nothing. It is really really hard not to be disappointed and frustrated. I have my first fill on Tuesday. I'm really hoping this will help. Thanks Michelle

Unfortunately you will always get the shoulder pain from time to time. I am getting it a few times a week and my lap band was in 2006!

I had surgery 12/9, everything went fine, not much pain afterwards, back to work full time in less than two weeks. I was losing steadily after surgery, but then it stopped. I kept on watching what I ate and began exercisng. The scale started moving again, but now it's stopped again. Dont get me wrong, I'm happy about my losses thus far, but it's very frustrating when I'm making an effor to work out (4 days a week) watch what I eat and the scale NOT move! I have only had one fill (1.5cc) so I know by reading everyone elses experiences that it will get better once I get more fills. Also, I have started doing body pump (weights) one day a week so that could be a contributing factor. I know that I have made some changes in my life by just having a different outlook. I don't eat nearly as much as I used to and I now look at exercise as a part of my life instead of something to do for a few months. I still plan to keep exercising and watch what I eat but I just wanted to say it out loud...I'M FRUSTRATED!!! Thanks for listening!!

It never hurts to ask. My doctor will allow fills 4 weeks after surgery. Each doctor has their own guidelines though. Good luck!

Does caffeine cause pain?
johnlatte replied to lwilliams65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think it is the caffeine. It could have been the cinnamon, or something in the creamer. Also don't know how much milk you've been drinking but some folks come out of the surgery a little lactose intolerant. Could have been the milk. You might try deconstructing the drink bit by bit to see if you can narrow it down. Maybe use almond or rice milk and leave out the cinnamon one time and see what happens. Most likely down the road you won't have a problem, but at 11 weeks, I could see how something like this might not agree with you. -
I am Day 24 post-op, and I still have days where I am weaker than others, and days where my walking wears me out much worse than others. Overall, I still get tired really easy. This is why I am not going back to work until November 14. By then, my plan will have had me on the beginnings of meat for a week, and I am hopeful that my energy levels will be better. (And since that is the week before Thanksgiving, I'll work that week and then be off the entire week after...)

Thank you, thank you. I've been feeling very alone and reading about people eating sushi a week after banding. I tried a little cottage cheese this AM as that was my staple breakfast most of the time prior to banding. I'm having a little discomfort and a little burning sensation high up, but my stomach is going to have wake-up issues. I'm making some sweet potatoes in chicken broth that I can use as a healthy snack. And I've pulverized some chicken breasts in the blender so I'll try a little of that today as well. If I don't get enough protein in for a few days.....I'm sure I'll survive. I'm miserable but hopeful for the future. Thanks again. Gwenn

Side and/or Belly Sleepers....
SunnyCox replied to connie3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also on my stomach the first night. It really helped relieve the gas. For my gallbladder surgery, I couldn't sleep on my stomach for almost two weeks. -
When were you guys able to start sleeping on your side or belly after surgery? Im almost 2 weeks out and I still can't.. It still hurts to sleep on my stomach. :/
