  1. AMEN to this. I am amazed at the folks who are constipated but refuse to add any healthy fiber to their diets. I refuse to constantly take laxatives and potions when adding a bit of flax powder to my yogurt will work just as well and much more naturally.
  2. No one ever on this site has made me feel not welcomed. Ever. I agree with your mentality about eating healthy foods. And to me healthy foods are not "sugar free", "low fat", "fat free." In other words food that has taken out fats, sugars, calories, carbs and added in crap chemicals are not healthy. I would rather lose weight slowly, while taking care of my body than eat crap food because it is low fat, sugar free, fat free or carb free. I think complex carbs are necessary for many healthy functions including going to the bathroom. So many WLS patients complain about having HORRIBLE constipation after surgery. Screw that, your body NEEDS Fiber and not just fiber found in a "mix" but actual fiber from foods. There are exceptions like cottage cheese, certain yogurts and cream cheeses that I'll buy low calorie/sugar versions but all in all, I will not eat chemically altered food. There is no reason why ANYONE should.

My Protein shakes fill me up, but they are shakes I make myself typically before heading to the gym. It's usually Protein powder, greek yogurt, and whatever mix in I have on had. Sometimes that's nut butter, sometimes a bit of rolled oats, sometimes a handful of spinach. I've even added baked sweet potato or pumpkin puree. I think 41lbs at 10 weeks is a good weight loss and eating 500 calories a day is fine. I was eating between 400 - 600 at that point as instructed by my NUT. I was allowed Soup during all liquids and always added a scoop of unflavored protein to it. I am allow regular soup now and have been since week 6 when I was allowed to eat whatever I could tolerate.

    One week? Purée or not?

I just had my post surgery class yesterday. Until 14 days post surgery we are on liquids. That includes shakes, ff milk, cal free beverages, vegetable juice, low fat strained Soup, sugar free popsicles, low sugar nonfat yogurt no chunks and hot cream of wheat runny. At day 15 we progress to puréed / soft diet. At that stage we can add cottage cheese, meats, fish, tofu but they don't have to be blended to a liquid. We just have to be sure it is soft and can be chewed to applesauce consistency. Every program is so different. For my program I will be on a notified diet for a total of 10 weeks. 2 weeks preop (Bariatric Advantage), 2 weeks full liquids and 6 weeks soft/puréed. Edit to add: my puréed food guideline is to add as little liquid as possible to conserve consistency. My nut recommended crockpot cooking to get the meat really tender.

    Any August 31st Sleevers?

I'm a 9/2 girl here!! I've lost 71 pounds since June 5. Since surgery 9/2, I've lost 37 pounds. I'm doing great. Only meats I really like/have tried are chicken breast. I've also tried turkey/beef jerky and I chew it to a purée and I love that too. Still do not feel hungry at all and have to remind myself to eat. As for "soft" things, I like yogurt, scrambled egg, quaker oats "weight loss" low sugar and fat oatmeal, cottage cheese, lentils, pintos n cheese from taco bell, string cheese, SF popsicles and jello. Liquids, I do 64 oz + a day of mostly pure water because I love water and also diluted powerade zero. I will not be having any bread, rice, pasta or fried foods AT LEAST until I'm where I want to be weight wise. My new miss. Tammy keeps me in check! Although, I haven't gotten sick or thrown up NOT EVEN ONCE!! But I also chew VERY WELL and eat VERY SLOW. So that's a big help. Very proud of no puke since I am frightened of it touching me or getting it on me. It's a fear!

It has been 6 weeks since I got out of the hospital. I have lost 44 pounds. On Tuesday, the doctor told me I could start incorporating textures into my diet. He also told me I could try to drink more than 4 ounces of fluids an hour to try to get my full amount of fluids in. I went out and had a toasted club sandwich on toasted wheat bread. Bread is stil not my friend. I was only able to eat a quarter of the sandwich. The other quarter I took off the bread and ate only the turkey and bacon. I learned that bacon is not my friend either. I have been able to handle almost all cooked vegetables, almost all dairy except non-lactaid milk and yogurt, and almost all meats except bacon and sausage. I am leery about trying steak, chicken breast, and pork chops.I have stuck to fish and ground meats for so long. I did try one of my sister's french fries. That was a mistake. it hurt behind my sternum when I tried. So, I guess all fried foods are still out. I am still on the journey, and this stomach of mine is definitely keeping me on the straight and narrow.
  8. Premier Protein. chocolate and vanilla. I add Torani sugar free Salted Caramel Syrup to the Vanilla. yummy! For powders, I use Precision Engineered in Chocolate and Vanilla. In addition to shakes, I will add the chocolate Protein Powder to sugar free Jello Chocolate pudding snack and I will add 1/2 scoop of the vanilla powder to 1/2 container of greek yogurt. For unflavored (which I am able to add to a few foods), I use Doc Hale’s Unflavored Protein Powder. This last one came in handy immediately post-op because you can mix it in as little 3 ounces of liquid (I would use Propel Fitness berry water) and could get in 20g protein in only 3 or 4 ounces which really helps the first week when you can drink so little.
  9. @@Melvyn96 - The answer is yes it's a problem. You will be tired, you will be malnourished and eventually you will stop losing because the body will go into starvation mode. You have to find some way to get in Protein. shakes, RTD, yogurt or any other food. You also need to sip Water whenever you are not taking in protein and you need to be moving. This board cannot replace your program. Every program has a slightly different protocol and none of us are your medical team. They gave you a handbook. READ it. If that's too much, call them.

The STRICT ones in first year......

Thanks everyone for these recipes and resources! There are some pretty neat food swaps around! These are some of my favorites – maybe not too original, but they’re still good. -Portabello pizzas. Use the mushroom as the crust instead of a regular crust. You can go wild on the low-carb toppings, too, from cheese and veggies to chicken, anchovies, and olives. -Spaghetti squash. Definitely not an original, but I find this endlessly fascinating as a substitute for spaghetti. Maybe I like the idea of it because it’s so easy and natural. -“pasta” or “potato” salad made with hard-boiled eggs, cooked cauliflower (instead of pasta/potatoes), and Greek yogurt. To Lexuskela: Good for you for being really strict and sticking to your meal plan! I agree with some of the others, though, who have mentioned that not all carbs are bad. Maybe when you get more comfortable with your diet you might think about some of the healthy starches, like oatmeal and other whole grains, and sweet potatoes.
  12. I was sleeved Monday, October 5. It was very hard to eat initially because of the restriction, but I took it very slowly and eventually took in the requisite amount of fluids. Now I am home and having Protein shakes, fluids like Soup, Water, etc. Problem is I am hungry all day! My stomach is growling non-stop, even to the point of hurting - even after I have eaten and feel physically full. The PA said to try some yogurt or sugar-free pudding but there aren't really helping. I am frustrated and didn't expect hunger to follow me out of surgery. Help anyone???
  13. I lived on cottage cheese, Protein shakes, mashed carrots, Greek yogurt and creamed Soup during the puréed stage. I just gagged on puréed meats and eggs. I will say that once I hit the soft food stage, chicken breast and fish were my two best friends. Here are some things that went very well for me: Chicken breast with fat free gravy Chicken breast with marinara, mushrooms and green pepper Chicken breast with healthy request cream of mushroom soup Chicken breast shredded with taco seasoning Salmon Orange roughy with lemon butter sauce I always made double vegetables and stopped making all starches. This is what I cooked a and my family ate it too. I maybe made mashed potatoes once a week for my family and a sweet potatoe for me. Cauliflower was the vegetable that I used to replace potatoes or rice. I used the 2/1 method for ensuring a balanced meal. 2 bites of protein for every 1 bite of vegetables (healthy carbs). I did not really eat any bad carbs until I was probably 8 months post op and then only very occasionally. When I say bad carbs I am talking about crackers, a bite of dessert, that sort of thing. I cannot eat much so what I do eat I make sure that I get my protein in. For a snack I will usually have beef jerkey, nuts, Apple with Peanut Butter. If I want something sweet and icy, I will have some dole, dark chocolate covered bananas or strawberries. They come 4 slices in each pack, the strawberries are 60 calories with 6 grams of carb, the bananas are 100 calories with 12 grams of carbs. They take care of my need for something icy and sweet. I have also found that simply having a cup of skim milk also curbs my appetite when I am between meals.

Depends on your system. Check with your nutritionist to be sure. Try a ricttota bake. Basically the filling for stuffed shells topped with cheese and tomato sauce baked in a ramekin. Good Protein and filling. If your NUT allows it, chopped sauteed spinach is one of the easier veggies to take in at first. Spinach is also a good source of Vitamins & Fiber with a bit of protein to boot. Also you can swap out plain greek yogurt for sour creme. I prefer FAGE 0% greek yogurt. It's less fat than regular sour cream and a nice bit of protein. Now I want quiche. Thanks to this thread.
  16. So my surgery date is Oct. 19th. I am now doing the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Not doing to bad... Can eat greek yogurt, sugar free ice pops, sugar free jello and high protein low sugar drinks all day long. I have been very private about who i tell- which to this point is 2 people outside my finace and daugther. I told a very ol, verydear friend who responded with some negativity. The most bothersome comment was "well you're gonna loss all your pretty hair, you might get skinny but you're gonna be BALD!" WHAT ???? Does anyone know someone who lost all their hair?? I heard if you dont take in the proper amount of protein and vitamins you may lose some hair. This is why i didnt want to tell anyone-

    I HATE protein shakes

I remember the first Protein Powder I bought absolutely disgusted me! I took two sips and told my husband "I can't do this, this is horrible!" I went online and did some research found this woman's blog and Pinterest board; all my protein woes disappeared. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2015/08/post-weight-loss-surgery-menus-day-in_25.html https://www.pinterest.com/eggface/ I have discovered that with some inspiration, trial and error and creativity, getting enough protein in shouldn't be a problem. I have been eating Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt. It was 15 grams of protein and if I mix the banana Cream or Vanilla Flavor with PB2 powder I can get up to 20 grams of protein per serving. And yes there are more calories in the Triple Zero than the Dannon L&F but it taste way better.

    I'm hearing mixed things...

I never had a pureed phase. The first seven days after surgery I was on a clear liquid, Protein shake, strained Soup, sugar free Jell-O, broth and sugar free popsicle diet. Then on days 8 and 9 I was cleared to move onto low fat cottage cheese, plain yogurt (not pieces), sugar free pudding, creamed Soups, soft cheeses and the like. By day ten I was given the green light for soft Proteins, soft scrambled eggs, canned tuna, shrimp, salmon, imitation crab, ground turkey, moist chicken, lean deli meats in addition to yogurt, pudding, creamed soups, soft cheeses. At a month I could add well cooked veggies, fruit without skin (canned was recommended) and to add small amounts of milk with protein (Fairlife) into my diet. I have handled everything with ease outside of not chewing well and eating too fast. I have to time myself plus eat from a toddler sized spoon. I take a small bite every two minutes and once I slowed down, I had no problems with anything I was given permission to eat.

    I HATE protein shakes

You could try Fairlife Skim milk. Or maybe try some unflavored protien powder in Soups or juice or I even mix vanilla Protein powder (about 1/2 scoop) into 1/2 container of greek yogurt. That helps. But mostly I have to tell you that you may just have to keep experimenting until you can find one you like. Your tastes sometimes change, so you have to keep trying. Some good suggestions are Premier Protein (chocolate, vanilla or berry). Try putting some Torani sugar free flavored syrups into the vanilla one to see if you can find a taste combo you like. Or I use Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate (Chocolate and Vanilla) which I really like and I add in a little PB2. keep trying...
  20. Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways to get in protein? I have only been able to drink 1 or 2 sips lately. Its a brand and flavor I like. I used to love them, but now they repulse me. I'm two weeks post op. I can eat things like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and oatmeal

    Pre op diet HUNGRY

I found out Tuesday that my liquid diet includes yogurt and cream soups. (Without fruit and bits of meats)

    eggs

I made mine really soft, almost custard consistency. I added a tsp of greek yogurt and a tiny bit of shredded cheese then cooked over a low heat stirring frequently. The softness of the eggs made them perfect for the soft foods stage. I then added chopped spinach and other veg as I got further along. Never had an issue with them. 3 mths out I went to iHop and was able to order a vegetable omelet no problem. I still could only eat 4 bites, but it didn't bother me.

    unflavored Protein

I am a little over a week post op and the Unjury protein is absolutely sickening to me now. Each flavor tastes so sweet that is makes me nauseated immediately. Even the premier shakes make me sick just to smell them. I think it's because I'm on the full liquid phase so everything I'm allowed is sweet (pudding, yogurt, jello, etc.) I'm just so tired of sweet things! Yuck!
