How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
BLERDgirl replied to skinnyrita's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm vegetarian not vegan. It's not really hard. I eat a lot of greek yogurt, cheese, nuts, beans and dark green leafy veg. I also supplement with unflavored whey isolate. -
:How do you get your high protein?
thisfathasgot2go replied to Tracytma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
High Protein foods include fish, chicken, lean meats, cheeses, eggs, yogurts, Beans, nuts, vegetables. If you are talking about post-op, right after surgery, which is where I am at 4 days out, I am relying on clear Protein drinks (40G per bottle), unflavored Protein powder (26g per scoop) added to Jello and broth. Tomorrow, I can transition to Soups (adding protein powder), smooth yogurts, soy milk, and ready to drink non-clear vanilla/chocolate protein drinks in an attempt to get in my protein. -

It takes a while to get up to that for most people. Once you can move on to real foods it gets easier. chicken, fish, cheese, yogurt, etc. -
Protein Shaker Forever?
Spiceyfrog replied to zackly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am four months post op and still drinking one shake (33 grams of protein) per day. My surgeon only requires 50 grams per day and I struggle with that, so I would never be able to get to 70. I can only eat about 1/2C at a time, so I still eat high Protein everything, cottage cheese, cheese, greek yogurt and a very little bit of meat (only because my pouch does not tolerate most meats). -
So, I'm about 7 weeks post-op and came to visit me friend for a week in Eastern Europe. It has been really hard to find things that my stomach is used to and are low in fat and sugar. The portion sizes are much smaller than in the US, but the food can be equally unhealthy (fried cutlets are very common even when the menu doesn't say it's fried). I've also not found any sugar free drink powders or Protein powders that are low in sugar. I commonly eat Greek yogurt at home and rely on it for a decent amount of protein each day... but all of the yogurt here has less than 5g of protein per serving (i couldn't find Greek)... it was very low in sugar. I did find two new teas that I really liked and settled my stomach. They're so simple I don't know why they aren't commonly served in the US. The first was simple fresh mint leaves and the second was minced ginger... just steep and drink. Luckily, I came prepared with my own protein and have been okay... But it's a lesson in not making assumptions about what may be available away from home.

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
jess9395 replied to skinnyrita's topic in Food and Nutrition
I express my opinions but usually in a "this works for me" way, not a "this is what you should do" way. I also listen to what works for others, take some and leave the rest. I think the question "how invested are you in heathy weight loss" doesn't quite represent the discussion happening here, but that's OK. I consider myself quite invested in health--healthy weight loss, physical fitness (I run 20+ miles a week and do yoga 3-4 times a week), nutritious unprocessed foods. But I am also about balance, moderation and not setting myself up for failure. I eat "clean" for the most part 80% of the time or better, but this morning after my half marathon I had a donut! I also ate (and still eat) Wendy's chili early out--I couldn't eat lettuce early out so that wasn't an option. I have a few things I do regularly that don't count as "clean" and I don't avoid GMO food or eat organic, but I do include only healthy whole grains and avoid white sugar, white carbs, etc. I don't eat chemically fake low fat/sugar free/fat free, except in my Greek yogurt on occasion. So I don't know where that puts me in your scheme of things, but I guess what I think is its not an all or nothing for many of us. I can't get in to that all or nothing thinking, it's not something that works well for me personally long term. Because if it's not ALL I'm a failure and so it must be NOTHING and I give up. That's something I learned in therapy for many areas of my life not just food. So... That's where I'm at. Take what you want and leave the rest! -

During full liquids I was only allowed yogurt and protein shakes. -
As far as weight goes I'm trending about a pound a day. Surgery weight was 229. Today I'm 225. I'm perfectly fine with that. Someone told me you come out of surgery ten pounds lighter. That wasn't the case for me but a pound a day is a great trend. I'm shooting for five a week just so I'm not disappointed. I'm eating (drinking) broth. Decaf with almond milk. Jello. Yogurt. Water. Protein shakes. That's about it but it's fine actually. Still zero hunger. Gas gets better everyday.

Protein Shaker Forever?
Ashlegal replied to zackly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am five weeks post-op and do one Protein shake daily. I am only requested to get in 50 grams of protein a day. My Premier Protein Shake has 30 grams and I get another twenty in from yogurt, cottage cheese, lean meats (canned tuna, salmon, shrimp, imitation crab) and soft cheeses. I eat 5-6 small meals through out the day and don't overwhelm myself with getting x amount in each time I eat. I meal plan the day before and that is how I know I am getting in enough protein. Some days if I am not feeling so hungry, I will up my protein shake to 1.5 giving me 45 grams of protein. Then I will eat an Oikos Triple Zero (15 grams of protein) the rest of the day. It is absolutely a chore to get in fluids, Proteins and Vitamins in daily. You just have to try different things and through trial and error, you'll get there! Good luck! -
What were your favorite first "solid" foods?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to FocusOnMeNow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My favorite first solid food was and is cheese! My favorite soft food was cheese, too! It would have been my favorite liquid food, too if I could have found a clear liquid cheese. But seriously, my favorite soft and solid foods are generally the same: tuna, salmon, shrimp, scallops, turkey, meatballs, ground meat, turkey burgers, black bean burgers, pork tenderloin, yogurt, fresh fruit, green Beans, fresh sliced tomatoes, steak, refried beans, and cheese. The biggest treat when I was cleared for regular foods was Greek (gyro meat, feta, tzatziki sauce, hot sauce, no pita, no rice). I did have a bite of stuffed grape leaf. I didn't really start salad/lettuce until later. -
I would say first off you aren't eating enough and you aren't meeting Protein goals. I would add at a minimum an afternoon snack something like yogurt with a bit of fruit and a tsp of flax or wheat germ sprinkled on top would also address the constipation issues you previously mentioned. I would look into something like the the Isopure nocarb drinks or Syntrax nectar to help increase your protein and Fluid intake. I would also try walking for at least 15 - 20 minutes a day. Exercise helps jump start your metabolism and appetite. I would also call the doctor. Still having trouble eating at 8 weeks out is not a good thing. ETA: If you can tolerate it. I would even add a tiny bit of spinach to that 1 egg. Spinach had Vitamin A, K, folate, Fiber, Iron and protein. I would also add a tiny bit of Protein powder to the the afternoon yogurt. That would increase your protein intake.

Breakfast- 1 egg , cheese Lunch- tuna Dinner- turkey I don't eat much but when I do it's usually the stuff above, also aguacado and yogurt. I started at 195 and now I'm 175 been like that for 3 weeks. As for Water no I don't have 8 cups a day. I have 4 on a good day. I don't work out, however on weekends I clean my 2 story house and I do break a lot of sweat.

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
BLERDgirl replied to skinnyrita's topic in Food and Nutrition
AMEN to this. I am amazed at the folks who are constipated but refuse to add any healthy fiber to their diets. I refuse to constantly take laxatives and potions when adding a bit of flax powder to my yogurt will work just as well and much more naturally. -
How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
Ashlegal replied to skinnyrita's topic in Food and Nutrition
No one ever on this site has made me feel not welcomed. Ever. I agree with your mentality about eating healthy foods. And to me healthy foods are not "sugar free", "low fat", "fat free." In other words food that has taken out fats, sugars, calories, carbs and added in crap chemicals are not healthy. I would rather lose weight slowly, while taking care of my body than eat crap food because it is low fat, sugar free, fat free or carb free. I think complex carbs are necessary for many healthy functions including going to the bathroom. So many WLS patients complain about having HORRIBLE constipation after surgery. Screw that, your body NEEDS Fiber and not just fiber found in a "mix" but actual fiber from foods. There are exceptions like cottage cheese, certain yogurts and cream cheeses that I'll buy low calorie/sugar versions but all in all, I will not eat chemically altered food. There is no reason why ANYONE should. -
My Protein shakes fill me up, but they are shakes I make myself typically before heading to the gym. It's usually Protein powder, greek yogurt, and whatever mix in I have on had. Sometimes that's nut butter, sometimes a bit of rolled oats, sometimes a handful of spinach. I've even added baked sweet potato or pumpkin puree. I think 41lbs at 10 weeks is a good weight loss and eating 500 calories a day is fine. I was eating between 400 - 600 at that point as instructed by my NUT. I was allowed Soup during all liquids and always added a scoop of unflavored protein to it. I am allow regular soup now and have been since week 6 when I was allowed to eat whatever I could tolerate.

One week? Purée or not?
SleeveandRNYchica replied to sarahbethemails's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my post surgery class yesterday. Until 14 days post surgery we are on liquids. That includes shakes, ff milk, cal free beverages, vegetable juice, low fat strained Soup, sugar free popsicles, low sugar nonfat yogurt no chunks and hot cream of wheat runny. At day 15 we progress to puréed / soft diet. At that stage we can add cottage cheese, meats, fish, tofu but they don't have to be blended to a liquid. We just have to be sure it is soft and can be chewed to applesauce consistency. Every program is so different. For my program I will be on a notified diet for a total of 10 weeks. 2 weeks preop (Bariatric Advantage), 2 weeks full liquids and 6 weeks soft/puréed. Edit to add: my puréed food guideline is to add as little liquid as possible to conserve consistency. My nut recommended crockpot cooking to get the meat really tender. -
Any August 31st Sleevers?
VanessaVSGforme replied to dorothy510's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a 9/2 girl here!! I've lost 71 pounds since June 5. Since surgery 9/2, I've lost 37 pounds. I'm doing great. Only meats I really like/have tried are chicken breast. I've also tried turkey/beef jerky and I chew it to a purée and I love that too. Still do not feel hungry at all and have to remind myself to eat. As for "soft" things, I like yogurt, scrambled egg, quaker oats "weight loss" low sugar and fat oatmeal, cottage cheese, lentils, pintos n cheese from taco bell, string cheese, SF popsicles and jello. Liquids, I do 64 oz + a day of mostly pure water because I love water and also diluted powerade zero. I will not be having any bread, rice, pasta or fried foods AT LEAST until I'm where I want to be weight wise. My new miss. Tammy keeps me in check! Although, I haven't gotten sick or thrown up NOT EVEN ONCE!! But I also chew VERY WELL and eat VERY SLOW. So that's a big help. Very proud of no puke since I am frightened of it touching me or getting it on me. It's a fear! -

It has been 6 weeks since I got out of the hospital. I have lost 44 pounds. On Tuesday, the doctor told me I could start incorporating textures into my diet. He also told me I could try to drink more than 4 ounces of fluids an hour to try to get my full amount of fluids in. I went out and had a toasted club sandwich on toasted wheat bread. Bread is stil not my friend. I was only able to eat a quarter of the sandwich. The other quarter I took off the bread and ate only the turkey and bacon. I learned that bacon is not my friend either. I have been able to handle almost all cooked vegetables, almost all dairy except non-lactaid milk and yogurt, and almost all meats except bacon and sausage. I am leery about trying steak, chicken breast, and pork chops.I have stuck to fish and ground meats for so long. I did try one of my sister's french fries. That was a mistake. it hurt behind my sternum when I tried. So, I guess all fried foods are still out. I am still on the journey, and this stomach of mine is definitely keeping me on the straight and narrow.

What is everyones favorite Protein Drink?
Daisee68 replied to JellyBellyNoMore's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Premier Protein. chocolate and vanilla. I add Torani sugar free Salted Caramel Syrup to the Vanilla. yummy! For powders, I use Precision Engineered in Chocolate and Vanilla. In addition to shakes, I will add the chocolate Protein Powder to sugar free Jello Chocolate pudding snack and I will add 1/2 scoop of the vanilla powder to 1/2 container of greek yogurt. For unflavored (which I am able to add to a few foods), I use Doc Hale’s Unflavored Protein Powder. This last one came in handy immediately post-op because you can mix it in as little 3 ounces of liquid (I would use Propel Fitness berry water) and could get in 20g protein in only 3 or 4 ounces which really helps the first week when you can drink so little. -
No protein & no vitamins, is it a problem?
BLERDgirl replied to Melvyn96's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Melvyn96 - The answer is yes it's a problem. You will be tired, you will be malnourished and eventually you will stop losing because the body will go into starvation mode. You have to find some way to get in Protein. shakes, RTD, yogurt or any other food. You also need to sip Water whenever you are not taking in protein and you need to be moving. This board cannot replace your program. Every program has a slightly different protocol and none of us are your medical team. They gave you a handbook. READ it. If that's too much, call them. -

The STRICT ones in first year......
Alex Brecher replied to Lexuskela's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks everyone for these recipes and resources! There are some pretty neat food swaps around! These are some of my favorites – maybe not too original, but they’re still good. -Portabello pizzas. Use the mushroom as the crust instead of a regular crust. You can go wild on the low-carb toppings, too, from cheese and veggies to chicken, anchovies, and olives. -Spaghetti squash. Definitely not an original, but I find this endlessly fascinating as a substitute for spaghetti. Maybe I like the idea of it because it’s so easy and natural. -“pasta” or “potato” salad made with hard-boiled eggs, cooked cauliflower (instead of pasta/potatoes), and Greek yogurt. To Lexuskela: Good for you for being really strict and sticking to your meal plan! I agree with some of the others, though, who have mentioned that not all carbs are bad. Maybe when you get more comfortable with your diet you might think about some of the healthy starches, like oatmeal and other whole grains, and sweet potatoes. -
I was sleeved Monday, October 5. It was very hard to eat initially because of the restriction, but I took it very slowly and eventually took in the requisite amount of fluids. Now I am home and having Protein shakes, fluids like Soup, Water, etc. Problem is I am hungry all day! My stomach is growling non-stop, even to the point of hurting - even after I have eaten and feel physically full. The PA said to try some yogurt or sugar-free pudding but there aren't really helping. I am frustrated and didn't expect hunger to follow me out of surgery. Help anyone???
