  1. I am arthritic, have been , both major kinds since age 25. I have been blessed that I have had no major flares recently. The few I have had Tylenol or Norco has handled. Funny it never really worked for me before surgery. My joints arthritis destroyed will never be perfect again, I have 2 knew replacements, had metal plates in right arm, now removed, from a FX of the humerusc9 years ago, and had to have joint at base of my right thumb removed. Now I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery. But I move smoother and at a quicker rate of speed than before my surgery. And the 165+ pounds since highest weight and 119 since surgery, both wonderful occurances in my life!. Do I regret SURGERY even with a history of Arthritis? NO NO--- A THOUSAND TIMES--- NO! Without it I potentially would be much more crippled and was not too far from being Wheelchair bound. I am sorry I cannot go full tilt at gym exercises but those my body will permit I do faithfully, water therapy is a blessing, I bike ride although I will never qualify for Pelatonia, support them from the sidelines, and do that to honor the cancer people in my family, living and dead. I can still pass out water, help in these minor ways, cheer them on! They routed through my county last year, I live 50 miles from Columbus, if they choose to come here again I will be there cheering my lungs out in sincerity! I haven't had to visit my rheumatologist, my PCP has been able to handle me. I thank my surgeon for my surgery, my PCP and other doctors for standing with me through this all and I would now feel a success story still in the making. God Bless and Watch over YOU.
  2. What does it state in your policy about the weight gain? My Insurance is BCBS of Al, I gained from May till Nov 213 to 224. I was not denied by insurance but my doctors office is very strict at making me get to 213 again. I have been on liquids , protein drinks and sugar free jello for about 2 weeks. I'm down to 218 and weight in tomorrow! I would make sure you find out what the insurance policy states about weight gain. When I call BCBS everyone is always so helpful and nice! Good Luck.

    What should i expect?

Wls has opened up so many opportunities for me. I have rhuematoid arthritis and losing the weight has allowed me to decrease the medication that was causing my weight gain. I have been on steroids for about 6 years and hopefully next year I can come off of them completely. My answer to why be this drastic an have the surgery is simple. With the surgery you still have the cravings you did before, but instead of having to rely on your will power your stomach not only says no - but screams HELL NO! I started where you are 256 at 5'3 and I am down about 85 after 6 months. I feel sexy and confident, and more like a woman ( if that makes any sense).
  4. Hello! In month 4 post op (January), I began a weight loss team program at the gym that involves an hour of cardio (with some strength exercises built in) 3 times a week and I usually add 1-2 times additonal. My weight loss has halted compared to before (7 pounds since the beginining of January). I am about 25-30 lbs. away from a realistic goal. I also have not been drinking enough Water, my mistake! BUT, why would the weight loss slow completely when I am now working out? Has anyone had that happen to them? I know I am gaining muscle, losing fat, etc. but I would still think the numbers would budge a bit more (ex. 2 lbs per week, etc.). I know it is not about the "number" and I should really only concentrate on the % fat that I am losing, but it would be nice to see it go down more. Am I being unrealistic?
  5. I agree with everything McButterpants said. To expand on one point: Muscle weighs more per square inch than fat does. So if you lose one square inch of fat and gain one square inch of muscle, the scale is going to show a slight increase. BUT - and this is much more important - muscle burns calories by just existing, and fat does not. Therefore the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism. So gaining muscle is definitely a good thing.
  6. I am meeting with surgeon in a couple weeks and we are discussing the sleeve verses bypass. I am 50 years old, no other health concerns except my knees are bad from my extra weight and the obvious.. I am overweight scratch that obese : ) So for those of you who have had bypass I was wondering if you would now have considered the sleeve or visa versa. THANK YOU ahead of time as I am a newbie. Trouble with food intake

I think it may be the amount of restriction you need to have control over your eating. For me, I don't need to be very tight. My $2500 copay is enough of an incentive for me to be fairly strict on myself without having my band very tight. For me, it is more important for me to be happy with my band, and the foods I can eat, than to lose weight quickly. I keep losing around 2lbs per week and I am happy with that. I had almost half of a hamburger steak the other day, and my friend said she would never have been able to eat it. She has her band tighter than mine and prefers to be more restricted. It depends on what YOU need to make you and your band successful. It is a learning process and you will figure it out.
  8. I would class my band as a resounding success (because I lost 120% of my excess weight), yet I am one of the ones who can eat bread, can eat everything and eats quite a lot. I have 2.8cc in my 4cc band at the moment and its maintenance level for me becuase I can eat about 1800 calories a day, and eat things like sandwiches. Yet others would be puking up liquids and be very retricted at that level. You absolutely cannot compare yourself to other people, the right level of fill for you is the fill at which you lose weight at a reasonable pace of 1-2lb a week. Or the fill at which yoiu maintain effortlessly if you've gotten to goal. What someone else does or does not eat is absolutely irrelevant to you. After 3 years though - I've banded about that long too and I found after about 12 months I needed a tiny top up fill, I'd lost some Fluid through evaporation over that time. There's probably never a time when you wont ever again need a fill.
  9. When I asked my doctor what a realistic weight goal would be for me, he shrugged his shoulders. I mentioned that the 'standard' said for 5'2" a weight of 125-134 is ideal. He said and I quote "that is crap, they don't know what they are talking about". I laughed but expressed to him that I've put a much needed vacation on the line. We are saving for a fancy vacation that I've promised myself when I reach goal. That being said, I was attempting to make sure my goal was attainable. Sigh, so I'm shooting for a good BMI and will know when I'm happy to look in the mirror that I've made it.
  10. I had my band in and filled when I was pregnant with my second son. It was pretty text book, no issues at all. I didn't start gaining till I was about 17-18wks pregnant, and gained a total of under 20lbs. I did have to get unfilled about 4 mos into my pregnancy. By the time my 6w post partum check up came around, I'd lost all the pregnancy weight plus some. I also have PCOS, but I don't cycle regularly (mine were forced with progesterone and femara). I was worried about milk production, but it all worked out fine. I nursed DS till he was 2, had plenty of milk (I wouldn't have known that if I was pumping, I could never express enough that way). My OB explained that baby was getting everything he needed to grow from me, so I just needed to focus on taking care of myself.

Anyone else have problems with Kaiser?

Go to weight watchers & have the leader print out the visit records. It'll list all the times you went & your weights. Its considered a medical record do they have to keep them 7 years & they have to give u a copy if u ask. Have the leader sign the print out. That worked for my kaiser. allons-y
  12. Here is a good article about stalls. Quite normal and is actually a good thing. Know that this will not be your last stall, either. http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html#.UqZUa_RDulY

    Vitamins & Malnourishment

The last time I went to GNC, the guy behind the counter was totally hopped up on something. I swear it was like talking to a crack head. I wouldn't worry about this sales person and her obvious lack of knowledge about the subject of weight loss surgery and what supplements would be helpful. Her journey is hers, your is yours - at least you aren't going to have to come down off some crazy supplements after your weight loss
  14. How much weight in total do you have to lose? Trust me it will be fine

    why is lapband discouraged?

I've not heard the lap-band discouraged, but I can understand why it would be from a medical perspective. The lap-band requires you to meet it at least halfway, probably more like 75%. Some of the other WLS do not. But this is not due to complications. I believe AGB has one of the lower complication rates of all WLS. As for suggestions on how to handle... I would ask: What are the complications and their rates, that makes it so unattractive? Are those rates based on national numbers, or that surgeon's own? if the surgeon needed to lose (enter amount of weight you have to lose), which would they choose and why? How does that compare to other WLS? Yes, AGB recipients have gone to RnY. RnY have also had to get the AGB to help control their weightgain. That one definitely swings both ways. But it's not COMMON.
  16. Julie I scheduled my unfill for the day before my tt - my band dr wants me completely unfilled for surgery - I was getting scared that I'd start to gain and I've really been working to lose 10 lbs prior to tt so I didnt' want it all to be in vain. My only advice it start using fitday.com or thedailyplate to track your calorie intake. Make healthy choices and try to pysch yourself out by telling yourself you aren't allowed to gain anything before surgery. I also scheduled my re-fill for one week post op. We figure we'd play it by ear and if I happen to be too tight at that time to get refilled then we'll wait a week. I sympathize with you, I actually told my dd today that for supper the night I get unfilled I'm going to have a cheeseburger and fries. How crazy is that. OH and I said, I'm going to guzzle a whole bottle of water. LOL thats my crazy FAT mind working. Yep the best thing for me is not to get my unfill until 3:15 the afternoon before my surgery.
  17. My doctor took me from 3.2 to 2.7 a few days ago. I think I have started to gain a little weight. Just wondering how you dealt with your unfill?
  18. At my 3 week check-up I was cleared for light weights (five pounds)and strength training. Prior to that I have been using my Walk Your Belly Flat video by Leslie Sanson. It has 3 miles of in the house speed walking. I can do one mile right now....it's exhausting until I recover more from surgery.

    The Wagon...

I have not gotten my surgery yet (9/7) so I don't know how much I can add to this but... are you exercising? That will really help a lot (even with out the band)- even just a few trips up and down the stairs, jog in place for 10 minutes, lift a chair up and down several times, do leg lifts or squats while on the phone- point is just add some extra activity here and there. and if you ARE exercising- maybe check out some fitness websites to get some tips to boost yourself again. Sometimes (so I was told), if you do the same routines- your body levels out and its not challenged anymore and hits a plato (sp?) so change up your routine a little or add weight training to your routine- I hear that helps... (like many fat people who have been there done that a thousand times- I could be a personal trainer and nutrionist if I was just able to maintain myself  and keep it off ). As far as snacks- I think thats going to be my tough spot too! are you eating Snacks because you are hungry or you are just bored and want to munch? if you are hungry- add more protien to your diet. but if its just to munch.. you need to find things that are low calorie or at least very low fat. some ideas maybe- low fat frozen yogart (turkey hill has awesome flavors just make sure you check the fat percent cause some are still pretty high but most are very very low and some are zero), fat free pretzels (or will those get stuck?), fat free string cheese, frozen grapes, italian ice (at least you have to work to eat it so it takes longer to eat), fat-free pudding packs, fat free yogart, as previously mentioned 100 calorie pack things (but I cant just have one lol), sugar free lollipops, baby carrots (even if you add fat free dressing), apples slices (they now sell pre-packed snack packs of apples and carrots). Hope some of those are helpful!

    When to start exercising?

I started with one pound strap on velcro weights from wal mart a week after surgery. They have them for your ankles and wrist. I started heavier about 6 weeks out. Hope this helps:-)
  21. Before surgery, I was not a snacker at all. I ate very large, filling meals and didn't really get hungry again until it was the next meal time. Now, no matter WHAT I eat, I can guarantee I will be hungry again within an hour and a half to two hours. I've built snacks in so that I'm not gaining because of them, but boy, it is really annoying being hungry so often. I literally feel like I eat all day long. And I guess I kind of do! The sad thing is, I could eat way more snacks than I currently allow. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, snack, dinner, snack. Omg! I'm maintaining at a minimum of 1600 calories a day, so I have room in my calories to have these little snacks, but I'm terrified one day I'm going to wake up and this is no longer going to work for me. That I will wake up and these snacks are suddenly way too much and I gain 50 lbs! This is completely irrational, but being hungry so soon/often after eating is pretty worrying. I hope in time I get more accustomed to it. Dense protein does not seem to phase this. I can eat dense protein for a meal and get full, but I will certainly be hungry again in at least two hours. Anyone else dealing with this? Or can someone who is also like this reassure me that it's ok to have these snacks? I hear so often that snacking is where most people fail at after surgery. I thought how I was before surgery would fall over to how I am after surgery (not a snacker), but the opposite has occurred.

    Skin ... what to do

The fear of the unknown outcome Loose skin is a normal topic in here. Pre op I googled what weight loss loose skin looked like. I looked at best case and worst case scenarios to prepare myself of what my results might be. The only thing that will remove loose skin is plastics. If you have documented rashes, infections or mobility issues some insurance companies will help pay for plastics. Self pay is expensive. Research your options. Lotions are the same as all the weight loss pills promised quick weight loss...Lotions my soften but if the damage is done they will not make your skin snap back or prevent loose skin. I never thought I'd be a bikini model after surgery. Lost over 100 pounds. I have lose skin. Honestly it's not as bad as I thought it would be. For me, shapewear helps hide the skin and makes clothing fit better.

    Skin ... what to do

Loose skin is a matter of age, genetics, how long you have been obese, how much you have to lose, and where you carry your weight. That's it. No lotions, creams, massage, exercise (it's not a muscle), or binding is going to make the damage go away.

    Hip pain increased?

My hips, knees and ankles have all gotten better since I have lost weight. I have gout and I did have an attack starting about a week after surgery, but I think that was due to me not taking my allopurinol which reduces uric acid whi h causes gout attacks. We also had some cold weather and snow which can also cause gout attacks. Staying hydrated helps as well.

    Looking for 1st hand feedback

I had MGB over 5 months ago. I haven't had any complications whatsoever. I was self pay and went to Tijuana, Mexico, where Dr. Illan was my surgeon. I was in the hospital for three days, and then went to the hotel for two days, where a doctor came to visit me each day. I have steadily lost weight with no stalls, and it's one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am almost 70 lbs down and I couldn't be happier!!!
