They can always give you something for the pain and the incisions are smaller than I thought. There will be some scars, though. Don't be afraid, though. Think of the gains, not the pains!

1Day1Life4Now replied to leebug30's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
congratulations to all of you. I wish you all an easy time and a quick recovery. I had the sleeve a little over 2 years ago and I love it. I'm having terrible reflux now so I'm having the bypass done in August. Weight loss is wonderful, you are going to love it. -

emilyxx posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So HI! My name is Emily . Im 23. I was just banded on july 16th.No problems during surgery. My stay was excellent. I didnt get up and walk much the night at the hospital. I didnt sleep the night before surgery( nerves) so when i had to be tehre at 530am i was exhausted and after the recovery room and being placed in my room i slept a lot! Prolly every 20 minutes hahah on and off. I had some slight gas pain in my tummy. Other than that i was peachy. So far (and its only been 7 days) nothing to complain about except i wanna CHEW something haha. Im not hungry I just want to have some kind of consistancy in my mouth. Im still on Clear Liquids. I am on that until I go for my post op visit on Monday with my doctor. Most go to what my doc calls "full liquid" after 7 days but apparently according to his rules i wait until i go see him. I havent weighed myself yet. Last time i saw my weight it was at the hospital before i put on my gown. Im very excited to meet people and to have some one to talk to who understands what im going through. My parent sympathize but dont get it when they sit down in front of me while i sip my broth and they are eatting big macs lol. RUDE  If you wanna know more about me just ask. Im more than willing to share. loveeeee -
Hello Everyone I am a Nurse so going into this surgery I was a little troubled about getting the surgery. At first I was getting the Lap Band until I had a bad sprain to a ankle that I previously fractured really bad. With the help of my Dietitian and Surgeon I decided to go with the Sleeve. Because of my injury I gained and lost gained finally day of surgery I weighed in at 341lbs. The surgery went well but my first couple of days were painful. I had vomiting, nausea, and horrible gas pains. On top of everything I started my cycle ten days earlier as well. I have been able to tolerate juices broths and I am trying a cream Soup tonight for the first time. I had my favorite restaurant to blend blend my favorite cream of crab soup. I am also feeling some numbness in my right arm and having a hard time sleeping. Will this go away?

Help the OAC Fight Weight Bias on the Dr. Ken Show!
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Stand up to weight bias by asking the ABC television network to remove fat-shaming content from its new series, “Dr. Ken.” The conversation featured in the promotional trailer between Dr. Ken and one of his patients, who is affected by excess weight, furthers the misconception that healthcare providers do not want to help patients with obesity. We’re asking for the ABC television network to remove this and any other fat-shaming content from the television series before it goes to air. Visit the following link to stand with us and contact ABC to ask for the removal of fat-shaming content from the “Dr. Ken” television series: bit.ly/OACBias3 -
If you are following your doc/nuts plan don't worry the weight will come off. We are all individuals and will lose at the pace our bodies want to. Stalls are common along the way so if it stresses you out when the scale doesn't go down I would suggest to weigh less often. Your body is healing right now. You will lose if you stick to the plan. Try to relax and enjoy the journey.

Trying To Learn Everything I Can...
Oregondaisy replied to vanb0052's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are many reasons that the Sleeve is better than the bypass in my opinion. I would not want to have my intestines rerouted and have to be diligent with taking all sorts of Vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life. I know people who have had the RNY and have to have Iron infusions regularly. Also, the gastric bypass pouch is very stretchable and weight regain has very high statistics. The sleeved stomach is made from the non stretchy muscular part of the stomach and stretches a little, but not nearly as much as the pouch left after an RNY. Also, when you have the RNY, you can never take any type of anti inflamatories such as Ibuprofen. The sleeved stomach is a normal stomach, just smaller. Weight loss is just about the same with both surgeries. If you do a search up above in the right hand corner in the search menu, you'll find many explanations about this. Hope this helps some! -
Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or more. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

Make sure you get your daily walking in. It will help the recovery process go quickly and smoother. I cut out all caffeine and carbonated beverages 6 months before surgery. I was on a 6 Diet Coke per day habit. I went through a week of severe withdrawal pain - very severe headaches. So if you haven't done this yet, do it now. It is better to get this withdrawal over with now than compound it with the effects of surgery. After surgery, I lost my hunger. Many people experience this. It is not hard to lose weight when hunger is not constantly and continually gnawing at your bones. Your taste buds will change after surgery. Expect this. Get a pill crusher and a pill splitter. Its a good idea to get a good blender such as a Ninja blender with a single serving size or a Bullet Blender. It will come in handy when you mix the Protein shakes.

I'm preop. There have been a couple delays in the process but I can deal. I've done the orientation session and started attenging a support group and have been hanging out with all you lovely folks here. So, back in October, I decided to start tracking what I'm eating in preparation for both my RD appointment and my postop life. My goal wasn't to even pay attentiion to whether I was gaining or losing, but simply to track as honestly as I could, every choice I made about food, good, bad, or indifferent. And my other goal was to pay attention to when I was comfortably full, and stop there, instead of continuing to eat simply because something tasted good. This morning was my RD appt. I stepped on the scale - and I've lost 8 lbs in 6 weeks. Three of those were over Thanksgiving weekend. Go figure! So I went to my RD appt. and handed her a printed copy of my journal notes. She was very happy to see what I've been writing, noticing, aware of, etc. Cool! And then I called my surgeon's office. I had to change surgeons before I actually saw the first one. The first one wouldn't see me until after both the RD and psych appts. (my health plan doesn't require this, but the Program does). The second surgeon is happy to see me first. I have my appt. 12/22. Cool!

I was sleeved 8/16 I lost 82 pounds. Trying to lose another 20. I joined weight watchers. It is great. My surgeon suggested it. I go see him every 3 months for a follow up. He said most patients stop going to see him. I like to go it makes me be accountable. Nobody at weight watchers has to know has to know about your surgery. Good luck

Week 2 post op question...
Rogofulm replied to TeacherMommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Two weeks out you may still have a little bit of swelling, which can make everything feel more constricted. My surgeon's advice to "eat until satisfied, not full". Sounds like you're doing that. When you get to solid foods, it's easier to measure because you can weight it. I can eat 4-5 oz of tuna salad or chicken salad, 4 oz of chicken, but only 3.5 of steak. Make sure you're getting in at least 64 oz of fluids, and if you're short on Protein, have another shake or a Greek yogurt. Calories aren't an issue because you won't get anywhere near 1,200 for a long time. -
Scared To Face My Doctor!!
kacee replied to REDGIRL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op "diet" is not to lose weight specifically, it is to take in the types of foods that help to shrink the liver size so the surgeon has easier access during the operation. Just do the best you can. -
Wow, didn't even think about the possible size change... I can't wait to feel comfortable walking in heels and wedges but I guess I shouldn't buy any shoes until I lose more weight!

I had gastric bypass 13 months ago. Food doesn't taste the same and it doesn't taste good. I don't like any kind of meat anymore. I feel like I'm just existing and not living. I live on soup mainly. I don't know what to do anymore. My Dr said I just need to eat meat. I am still losing weight and I'm beginning to look anorexic. Has anyone had this problem with food, not liking the taste anymore?

Hi and welcome, you have come to a great place for support and advice. You said you haven't lost any weight in two months, when was your last fill? Do you feel like it is time for another one, or are there other issues?

Back From Vacation
beachgurl84 replied to JamieLogical's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@JamieLogical of course we missed you! Many thoughts here...... Sucks about the plague! Glad to hear everyone is feeling better. Any idea where it came from? Happy to hear you splurged and treated yourself. This journey is about a "normal" life and sometimes that involves ice cream I don't blame you a bit on no formal exercise. It always seems like I'm so exhausted from vacations myself because there's always so much to do. I couldn't imagine trying to exercise on top of all the running around, site seeing, rides, sickness, etc. Congrats on the recent weight loss. I use to joke that I could use a good stomach flu to lose a few pounds. Unfortunately in the past if anything like that happened I would only regain it right back. Now that we're on this healthy path, you have a good chance of keeping it off. I say that because part of it could be loss of fluids and I don't want to see you discouraged if it returns temporarily. I definitely think you'll reach the stage of contentment. The sleeve is so much more permanent than any yo yo diet any of us have done in the past. Of course you could ruin the sleeve doing the wrong things, but we know you won't do that. You are fortunate in that you have an idea of what you will look like when you reach goal. I have been overweight since I was 6 years old. The last time I saw a scale under 200 lb I was 11 years old (and that was pre-boobs). I have no clue what I'll look like when I get under 200 now. I think once you get home a few days and start working out again, and see those 2+ pounds stay off, you'll start to feel better and encouraged again. You said it before, it doesn't matter how long it takes you to get there, it's just important that you get there. Keep up the good work, you are soooooo close. Welcome back!! -
I got a lot of warnings that I would be more fertile AND had to go off the pill for 2 months. I've read you aren't supposed to get pregnant for a year. I would call your doctor immediately. https://www.babycenter.com/0_seven-facts-about-pregnancy-after-weight-loss-surgery_1504874.bc Good luck, whatever you do.

I was a 12w when I started loosing weight and now I'm down to about a standard 11. I'm only 3 months out but I was thrilled about this part. It was always really hard to find shoes. The only thing that sucks is that a lot of the shoes I did have no longer fit, but at least I get to buy some new ones.

time to go clothes shopping
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's awesome!!! Congrats I can't wait until I'm there. Maybe another 10 pounds and I'll get to buy some new stuff, too. It's an awesome problem to have, right? Instead of buying bigger clothes because what you have doesn't fit, you have to buy smaller clothes because of how much weight you've lost!!!!! -
If your surgeon makes a small enough stomach, then your weight loss should be similar to RnY at 1 year out. My surgeon's practice showed a chart at the 2nd Sleeve Consensus Summit that shows this and they have other data that shows that from 1 year out, weight loss is pretty much the same. However, the sleeve surgery is not standardized at this time so you really have to go by your own surgeon's stats and success rate. If he's making the stomach bigger, or doesn't have the same angle of His, etc. then it changes the stomach emptying time and your restriction level and that can have an impact on your weight loss. I have some links here to help research the sleeve that you may find helpful.

New and appreciative
ShoppGirl replied to Making_changes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So glad to hear you are recovering relatively well. That’s great that you have a scale that measures the small losses (less than a pound). Mine is supposed to and it gives me random weights with ounces but I don’t think it’s accurate down to the ounce or I would have seen losses more like yours. -
Thank you all. Sounds like you have reached a consensus. I will just keep trucking along. Crossing my fingers that I will drop weight and it will ease up. *sigh*

You just went thru major surgery - give your body a break. It's still trying to figure out what you've done to it. Be patient and follow your doctor's instructions...the weight will come off. If you haven't started taking measurements (upper arms, neck, bust, chest, waist, hips, thigh, calf, etc), do so now. It will be most helpful when you're in a stall to see your body getting smaller. Also, start making a photo journal - I love looking back at my pictures and seeing myself shrink. You got this! You're doing fine.

Band in 8/2008,386lbs, removed 2012(blown out)looked like an hourglass he said. Re-banded 2014, 6'1 366lbs. In 2008 with original band lost 100lbs first 18 months, blow out band in 2012 and removed. Reinstalled 2014 and lost 0 lbs, gaining weight. 14cc band and the doctor will not fill past 6.5. This band is not working, why did it work the first time for 18 months and then stop? Is it really all mental like I've been told? I had a major life event(my son's illness) that triggered overeating in 2012. Why can't I control this, get my mind right? Is Sleeve that much better at appetite control? I am scared of failure again! Tell me the pros and cons of the Sleeve, I hear they no longer even do the band. Right now I'm 58 6'1 male 380lbs. Have an appointment with the doctor next month.
