Band to Sleeve and other questions!
NoMoBand replied to iamshazza's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Bandproblems, If nothing is going through and you are completely unfilled, it sounds like you have more damage than what they can see. In my honest opinion and the little time I experienced in between being unfilled and revision, you will gain your weight back, even with regular exercise. Your old eating habits will come back, it's so easy to find that old friend again. One of my concerns was once sleeved I would lose the same amount of weight as I did initially with the band which would leave me skin and bones, but, it doesn't work that way. You will lose weight quickly while you are on the pre-op diet and then the healing stage post op diet, but, once you build up to regular meals your weight loss stabilizes. Your body weight is at a very different stage now before you had the band done and the body now responds differently to weight loss, so, no you won't disappear. lol As far as the stomach size they leave behind for a revision patient depends on how much surgical scar tissue the band has created, thus, this is different for every person, but, the stomach size difference is minimal. Google "bougie size" and you will see the difference in the circumference on the sizes. Once I completed the progression diet after surgery and began eating normally again, I eat the same amount as when I had the band which is about 1/2 a cup. In time, your sleeve stretches a bit and you eat a bit more. What I've researched is usually 1 cup. Last, a UGI only shows if things are going through or not. If you doc hasn't mentioned yet, I would ask for an EGD to see how much damage you may have. Depending on what kind of damage the band has done or doing, your doc may be able to get your insurance to cover the whole revision. Keep us posted. jake -
Hows everyone doing today? Anyone getting nervous or close to there surgery date? As for me I had the sleeve done in 09 and it didnt work well . So doing a revision with bypass on the 22nd and not nervous at all . Ready for it actually started my pre-op diet already and was really supposed to start the pre-op diet on 12th. Its alittle different then the pre-op I had for sleeve. Which was all liquids . This one is simple . Two shakes a day and two small meals . 5oz meat and 1 cup veggies for 10 days . And If I want a snack its sugar free popsicle or jello.

I have band and my reflux is terrible. It's mostly because the band has slipped. I'm nervous that when I have revision to sleeve that I will continue to have it. My surgeon assured me that since I didn't have it prior to the band that I should be ok. I'm still nervous though!!!

It seems EVERY day I have a new fear. Is this normal?
Fatty McFatster posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will be a band to sleeve revision in the next few weeks. I am ready to lose the weight...AGAIN. But it seems I have a different fear every day or so. At first I was worried about the pain (which I have sense learned isn't too bad). Next I was worried about leakage. Then I was/still am worried about regain. And over the last day or so I have become worried about acid reflux (which I currently don't have due to the lap band). Is it normal to worry this much before sleeve surgery? -
Surgery in two days

@@Pinkgirl1234 I had an upper GI done before my revision from band to bypass and I actually got to see what my esophagus looked like. The tech said it was twice the size of a normal one. Don't miss that band at all. Fingers crossed for you! Stay positive and visualize it being approved. (I'm a freak I know!) -

Submitting to insurance
Dream4tc replied to eubanks2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@phatfatgirl- how old are you? How long did you have your band? My insurance made me get mine removed and I have to wait 8- 12 weeks to heal before revision. It's already been 3 weeks so, the count down begins. -
Submitting to insurance
phatfatgirl replied to eubanks2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm at this stage also. Everything submitted to my surgeons office and after the holiday they should be sending it all in to my insurance, UHC. I'm nervous because I'm young for a revision from band to bypass and had had the band done using HIP. I'm praying they ok removal of the band and conversion in one go. Fingers crossed for me! ☺ -
Banded, a learning process.
Julie norton replied to Elled2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats on keeping your band. ????And keeping weight off. It is not easy. There are some long term banders around these sites. Many have gone on to revision . I am closing in on 9 years and hope to have many more. It is a challenge to have the right restriction... Mine can change over time with no additional fills. I try to keep my fills low. But fight the weight game Hope you are well. I am much older, but same issues I would guess. Let me know -

September 17th, 1st day of the rest of my life!
TheProfessor replied to starosen's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I started 8 months ago at 259 lbs. One lap-band and whole lotta good exercise and careful eating later, and I am finally below 200 lbs for the first time in 15 years. I love my band. I am so, so happy with it! I have had no troubles at all - just fantastic results. Right before my surgery last December, I started reading a lot of the scary posts on this forum. I cried a couple of times as well, thinking to myself, "What the heck have I signed up for?!" Do yourself a favour, go to Youtube and search "Lapband success" and spend a couple of hours in heaven. it helped me tremendously:-) There are bandsters on this forum that have been successfully banded for over a decade and lost all their excess weight. Alex, who started this forum, just celebrated his 12th "surgi-verssary" - the man is our collective hero! There are people on this forum who have had the lapband fail for them. BUT there are also people on this forum for whom other forms of WLS have failed as well (bypass, gastric balloon, gastric sleeve)... so. There are failures and revisions in all methods, I think. If you have a good, credible, experienced surgeon, speak to her/him about your concerns, about the band's failure rate, about any medical issues you may have that may complicate your band experience. I can only speak for myself - I am halfway through my weight loss after only 8 months, and I have never felt more alive, more grateful, more wonderful (and, hello, more skinny!) -
My scars looked great initially and then formed keloids. I am hoping with revision they use same entry points and I can use some silicone patching to assist with the keloids.

Hi there!! All went really well! Got home yesterday, sipping Water and shakes and doing really great! The pain is very manageable so I'm not using the pain meds as much but it was hard to find a pharmacy that had the pain med in liquid form. If you can, have it filled at the hospital pharmacy. Cvs called 8 other CVSs for me and they finally broke down and called a Rote Aide that had it! ????. There are only two other things that bother me: the fact that I'm 13lbs heavier than when I went in the hospital and that my hands and legs are so swollen. But I'm told that both issues will remedy themselves in the next few days. When is your surgery? Are you doing a revision also? Good luck! Best regards, Crash! -
Success with sleeve after band failure?
Fatty McFatster replied to bhopeful's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also had a band failure and will be having my sleeve revision surgery shortly. In the meantime, I hope to see more "success with sleeve after band failure" stories. -
Band to sleeve in one surgery. Who's had it done that way? How long had you had your band? What was your recovery like? Any complications? Regrets?
Fatty McFatster replied to KellarsMom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I will be having the band to sleeve revision in 1 surgery (in about 4 weeks). I have had the band since 2010. I lost 115 pounds and felt great. Then came the complications. Had to have the band emptied and all of the weight came back. I am so ready to get this band out of me and move on to what is hopefully a more successful weight loss surgery (fingers crossed). -
If you haven't had surgery yet what are you most afraid of?
Fatty McFatster replied to mimorison's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have several fears such as dying and them finding other medical problems (i.e. cancer), but I fear weight regain the most. I currently have the lap band. Lost 115 pounds. Had complications and gained it all back. So, now they have to do a band to sleeve revision. So, yes...weight regain is my worst fear. I just want to lose weight and keep it off. -
I'm 40!and looking forward to the best years of my life.
Dream4tc replied to cslove's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fabulous forties ladies! I am one of them! I am 41. I plan on shedding this extra weight with revision to bypass in November. And hopefully reach my goal weight by summer time next year. I keep hoping that I will get to my original weight, but 6 pounds 11 ounces is not realistic hehehe. All joking aside, let's face it its so much harder to lose weight in our 40"s than it was whenever we were 20. With our WLS tools, we can all reach our goals and a healthier life:) -
October 2015 Gastric Bypass
SleeveandRNYchica replied to 395Ron's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am having revision from sleeve to bypass. My information was submitted to Federal BCBS yesterday. My date is tentative for 10/7 or 10/14. I am excited and nervous. I am a bit more nervous about revision than I was sleeve. I will have a 2 week prop diet using bariatric advantage. I heard its a bit nasty so not looking forward to that. -
Some insurance companies will not cover revision without medical necessity. The insurance companies believe if you've blown one surgery, you will not succeed with another. Some employers do not have weight loss surgery covered under their policies.

Welcome! I also had complications with lap band and will be getting my sleeve revision hopefully in the next 4-6 weeks. Good luck to you!

Did you have your band unfilled prior to revision surgery?
