Anyone get sleeve surgery in Mexico?
Sherry Rice replied to sleeveme7781's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I did. Best experience EVER! I researched every bariatric surgeon in Mexico. By far.... the best surgeon with lowest complication and morbidity rate is Dr. Illan with BariatricPal Team MX. They ALL speak English, the specialized hospital is BRAND NEW and ONLY FOR BARIATRIC PATIENTS. There is 24 hour security and you have your own personal valet to take you anywhere at anytime. 5' 5" HW: 259 CW: 235 GOAL: Healthy and hard 140-ish? -
First Time Drinking Alcohol Post Op
alexsax replied to learning to fly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its very disturbing to me that not one response on here pertains to any information about your liver? Did any of your doctors discuss with you the information about the effects of this surgery and your liver function? Let me let you in on a story. The gastric sleeve is currently a "trend" where I live. Women that are 30lbs overweight are flying to Mexico and getting it done. None of them are abiding by the post op rules. You know what we are seeing, women coming in non responsive because their liquid diet/low calorie diet and alcoholic beverages they are having are killing their liver. We have buried 2, one in her 20's and one in her 30's. When you get any kind of bariatric surgery, your liver is working over time. The largest reason aside of eating up your stomach, to stay away from alcohol, is to keep yourself from going into liver failure. A liver isn't easy to come by, and as soon as they pin point it was "elected" (you chose to drink when you were told not to, generally speaking it is 6 months and no carbonation), you are off the list for a transplant. I think that more physicians need to start showing the horrifying results of bariatric surgeries that aren't taken seriously. I worked in bariatrics, I have seen the positives and negatives. Please, put the fact that you are screwing up your diet second to the fact that you are putting a tremendous amount of stress on your liver that is already working OT. I like my alcohol, don't get me wrong! Just be faithful to your surgery, make it worth it! -

When I think the weight may start to slow down, I go back to the basics, maybe have liquids or soft foods and drop a few calories. If I can walk, I’ll do something to burn off the fat. I eat so much less fat,and I’m burning my own body fat. I’m not able to hit the gym for a full throttle workout, so I make sure I get the proteins, vitamins, supplements in, and go a little lower in the calories. This is my second time around, but the pouch wasn’t reduced...too much scar tissue. I have to do this with my own self, and I do document what I consume within a 24 hour period, and eat or drink according to my schedule. I’m up all hours, but I’m older, and this is supposed to make me lose less. Not true for me. I lost 20 lbs in 4 weeks. I never look at the scale, but document so that I don’t go overboard. I’ll eat diet gum...more than a few pieces, because it satisfies my need to chew, plus it’s sweet. But, this is just what I do. When I plateau, I’ll switch some foods to keep the body changing. I can’t afford expensive Bariatric foods, but I do the best I can. I used to be a slave to the scale. Now; I’m dedicated to the process. It’s label reading, serving sizes, and, my dr wants me to eat a certain amount of calories. Although the revision failed due to scar tissue, I realized that my stomach won’t be the help I need. I’m the help I need. Anyhow, I hope this was somewhat useful. -
VSG 12/13/17...My journey [emoji4]
RachelHackney posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey y’all, My name is Rachel. I’m 22 years old & a RN! I have struggled with my weight since I was about 9 years old. I made the decision to have VSG because I truly felt like it would make a vast improvement in my quality of life, how I interact with others & my work performance. I absolutely love what I do & I have worked really hard to get where I am now. So at the age of 22 I should not be coming home from working 12’s and be hurting in my knees & legs. I work night shift & it never seems like I can get enough sleep. I had been doing tremendous research but on November 1st I decided to take a leap of faith & call our bariatric surgeon at the hospital I work at. He got me in very quickly. On November 8th I had my pre op consultation & he thought I would be a great candidate. That same evening I had to meet with one of our hospital nutritionist. It was very informative!! I came home that evening & bought all of my vitamins & things I would need after surgery. I also had to attend a support group that the hospital hosts. It was great to see results from the surgeon I was going to be using. Today November 17 I had my psych eval & that was a great experience & I was recommended for surgery. The only things I have left at this point are medical clearance from my primary care doctor (nov 28th) & a follow up appointment with the nutritionist (nov 20th). I have already started the pre op diet of high protein low carb. I am managing to get all of my protein & water goals met & I am on day 5. I have decided to use this thread as a journal during the rest of my pre op & hopefully post op. Does anyone else have a surgery date 12/13 or around then? The program at my hospital has a once monthly bariatric meeting for all stages of patients in their journey. They also have twice monthly post op meetings where the bariatric coordinator and nutritionist are in attendance. If your program has meetings like this going in person can help you be accountable and get in person advice from others that may be in the same situation.

Tespo vitamin dispenser
VSGnewguy replied to confusedturtle3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just ordered mine a couple of days ago and had the same question so I emailed the company. This is their response, "Our formulas were based off of the nutrition guidelines from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. Liquid vitamins do have a better absorption rate than pills and with Tespo you are getting them mixed fresh daily with no fillers, binders, etc. We have many customers mention how good their bloodwork has been since taking Tespo vitamins. We would recommend that you discuss your concerns with your physician, so you can be monitored to ensure you are getting what you need. Thank you and have a nice day! Well. My carrier dropped out of the ACA and I have only ONE carrier to choose from BCBSIL and the 4 plans suck, coverage is lousy specialists only covered at 50% after deductible (old plan was 80%), premiums/deductibles are higher for a the closest plan. My bariatric physician is not in-network, he is the ONLY surgeon for over 100 miles (- well there is one and he only does the lap-band.) So so so glad I already had my surgery. Still I have an eye condition - ROP from being a preemie and had laser surgery this year from a vitreous hemorrage in June and today - I have a vitreous hemorrage in my eye while out shopping. So I have pepper and black snake floaters in the vitreous fluid, also filmy vision, and an eye 'headache". So looking at another laser surgery on the blood vessels in my eye. I can only see out of that eye, scary sh!tty sh!t. I will probably not post very much for awhile. Sue

Just wondering what everyone thinks of this for after surgery. I saw it on Facebook, kind of interesting but not sure it would be a life saver. Do you think it would make life easier or just be a waste of money? It’s interesting, but the Bariatric vitamin is still missing a lot of what my surgeon requires. https://gettespo.com/?hs_fb_account_id=714642958658248&hs_fb_campaign_id=6079600980153&hs_fb_adset_id=6093613549153&hs_fb_ad_id=6093613549753&hs_parent_creative_id=6090822660753&source=fb&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=Tespo+Conversions+Campaign Have a great day! It is a frustrating process. From what I have experienced, you need the full 180 days of care with your surgeon's office. I know you are frustrated because you weigh in with your PCP regularly and probably discuss weight loss at every visit, too, but the rules are pretty tight. Anther thing I've witnessed recently is that the monthly dietitian classes are PACKED, which I suppose means that word of mouth is growing enrollment, which means insurance companies and bariatric centers will get more attentive to pre-reqs.

Vent... having a difficult time getting bariatric doc office to submit to insurance. I did a 6 month nutritional program through my former insurance, gave release to doc office (still haven't requested it). I also did 10 months of Weight watchers from august 2016 - may 2017 and even had doctor visits in august, October, April, (and several others) where my weight was recorded and even nutrition discussed - though the visits were not specifically for that. I have talked to my current insurance several times and they are very much encouraging me to have my doc office submit for approval. Especially now since my medical tests revealed a hiatal hernia and gerd (i knew I had gerd) and that sometimes a waiver is given. However, the person at my doc office is being a bit snippy about turning it in for approval because she thinks the people I talked to at my insurance are wrong. I am trying to get them to submit but agh. (they also still have to request my ekg results since hospital was not theirs and get the online bariatric psych eval place to actually send my approval results). A bit frustrated. Just in case I started the 6 month nutrition visits through my doc back on the 6th

So I started looking into WLS about a year and a half ago. I started out with one doctor and then our insurance changed and it delayed me significantly. In the meantime, I had a slew of health problems. I'm finally ready to take charge of my life again. I found out through insurance that I have to go to a Center for Excellence (COE) A.K.A. Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery . The closest one for me is 3 hours away (without traffic). By happenstance I know someone who lives near the closest COE and used a surgeon with great luck. It was a no brainer to pick her surgeon instead of finding one at random. Long story short, I have been and will be traveling back and forth for all requirements: NUT, pulmonologist, psych evaluation, pre-surgical testing, ect. My surgery is currently scheduled for January. Due to the distance, I'm limited on how many times I can just take the whole day to go in for an appointment. Therefore, I've met with the doctor once . I honestly think the next time I see the surgeon is the day before my surgery. The surgical center I'm using usually requires support groups, but once again, the distance makes it impossible for them to set me up with one. Therefore, I've been taking to the internet and reading as much as I can. Also, using these forums as my "support group". This brings me to some questions: 1. In the packet of information that I was sent home with, it states that pain medication is not administered during or after the hospital stay. It says it can interfere with digestive system...ect. I have read via internet that you also cannot take NSAIDs. I wouldn't be as much concerned about this but I have a 3 hour+ car ride home after surgery. Can anyone tell me what helped them, and what they took? 2. Vitamins...... I'd really like to try the patches or the TESPO. But, can anyone share the values... (i.e. B12 1000mg per day x 2) that was recommended to them to take? Any discussion on this would help tremendously!

The guidelines I was given say during the mushy stage I should eat max 1/4 cup of food 4 times a day. That's like 4ish dry ounces of food a day. That seems really really low. Like impossible to hit any type of nutritional goals type of low. Any thoughts? I know I should ask my NUT but she is not very helpful. Basically just says stick to the sheet (and buy the products on it obviously), and doesn't really seem to know too much of the details of how bariatric surgery actually works.

I'm not having surgery until January, but I've known that I was going to start this journey for a while. I bought some biotin 10,000u and started it awhile ago. Just to strengthen my hair, skin, nails, ect. Also, I stopped coloring my hair to improve its condition and I bought a good quality shampoo. I've known a few people who have had bariatric surgery, and all of them experienced some hair loss. However, I think how much is determined by how diligent you are with your vitamins, and what condition your hair is in prior to surgery. Lastly, don't feel bad about stressing this. You are making giant life changes, and it is natural to want to hold onto something that makes you feel like *you*. Just remember that your physical appearance doesn't define you. And hair loss isn't a permanent symptom. I've heard that it can start 6-12 months after surgery and start to regrow after that.

I have to drink bariatric advantage, and I don't have any food to track, just the protein right now.

Weight gain happens to many of us. Glad you recognized the behavior. It's never too late to turn it around. Great advice above. Go back to bariatric basics. Log, protein and water goals. Continue your workouts. I also used my weight training to justify my calories. I'm cracking down and starting to lose weight again. If you are interested we have a holiday weight loss challenge going on to keep you motivated. Pre op question about weight
Healthy_life2 replied to WmW's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The goal with bariatrics is healthy. You are medically supervised throughout this process. It includes checkups and yearly blood work after surgery. Yes, the weight loss stops. After you reach your weight loss goal. You go into weight maintenance phase, You will be increasing healthy carbs to slow/stop the weight loss. -

What is Starvation Mode? Or just a stall? But wait, I not hungry either....arrggg
mamamc32 replied to GeTnBackuP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At two weeks out, your body is going through CRAZY adjustments. You just delivered a huge shock to your digestive system, so the poop issues are fairly normal. That gets better as you start eating more "real" food. Eat the amounts and foods your doctor tells you to eat - even if you don't feel hungry. If you physically can't do it (it hurts, you get sick, etc.), call your doc. You are definitely in starvation mode - we all are after surgery. You can't eat enough to sustain yourself. That's why it's really, really important that you eat what your doctor tells you and get your protein/fluids in. Short-term, if it's medically managed, starvation mode is not a huge concern. Your doctor will monitor you to make sure you are getting what you need. When it's time to start taking your bariatric vitamins, make sure you take them. I suspect you'll be feeling a lot better when you transition over to real food. That made a HUGE difference for me. I'm still wiped out at night, but I feel so much more happy and energetic during the day. Oh, and the stall . . . because you're so close to surgery, I wouldn't really call it a stall yet. I bet your body is just a little "freaked out" still. Just really focus on getting your protein and fluid, and you'll continue to make progress. -
40% of Cancers Linked to Obesity

Thank you James. That wasn't it--but that's a horrifying statistic isn't it? This was an actual study that just came out recently? It showed that bariatric surgery (independent of weight loss) caused a reduction in breast cancer recurrence rates? Gosh, I meant to bookmark it! And I forgot to do it! -

I'm going through UPMC Pinnacle Health Weight Loss Center in Harrisburg (surgery is at UPMC Pinnacle Osteopathic) Dr Rosenberger will be doing mine. The clinbic gives you a team environment. I waqs sold on them the first time I called after an appt and the recording said, press one if you are calling from a Drs office OR if you need to talk to your team. Most offices have you 3rd or 4th on the list. Here you are the prioirty. All the employees are awesome, my nutritionist is fab and friendly, and several of their employees have had weight loss surgery. Even the nurse at the hospital bariatric floor had WLS. When I had the EGD done, Dr Rosenberger came into the surgery smiling and singing to me. Gotta love happy people. From others I know, that had one of the other Drs, Dr. Marco, they all really like him too . My surgery isn't until Dec 13 2017, but they all have made me feel confident in my choice. and I'm excited! -
11 months post op and hungry every half hour...I am freaking out!!
Tracy4 replied to up4challenge's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 months out and going through the same struggle. Even though I don't eat alot at one sitting, I am noticing I graze and pick all day long. I started at 266 and I am at 189, and haven't lost anything in a month, I have been exercising 6 times a week and I feel like I am stuck. I did start logging all my food etc on a bariatric app and also on the Atkins app to see what I am doing right/wrong. It has helped. Any advice from people who have hit walls will help!
