  1. I also did very little research on plication. The reason I chose not to is because I live in a fairly small town in Texas. I was afraid it was too new a procedure for my local surgeons to know about. They don't offer it and if I had an emergency post op and couldn't get back to Dr Ortiz, I was worried they would not know what to do. Also my regular dr does all my health needs and I didn't know if he would know enough about it either. But on the plus side of the coin, a girl I was picked up with at the airport had plication the same day I had sleeve revision, and she was released to go home a few days before me and she said she had no pain. But my pain was also minimal. I just took liquid Tylenol and it was enough.
  2. I had gastric plication with Dr. Ortiz about a year ago. I felt very comfortable with the facility, staff, etc. But, afterwards I was still hungry--like all the time. My general doctor suggested I get a test (can't remember the name, but you swallow barium and they can see the stomach) to make sure my stomach hadn't opened. What it showed was that the stomach wasn't in the shape of a banana, but the top part was completely open and the stitches started from the middle down. That's why I was still feeling hunger. I send the CD of the images to Dr. Ortiz per his staff's instructions and heard absolutely nothing back. Nothing. Apparently they are great but you better hope there are no complications because you won't get any support. I ended up having a plication revision with Dr. Waldrep in Thousand Oaks, CA. He folded the top part that Dr. Ortiz left open and added another fold. And, there was constant support, including a call from Dr. Waldrep every couple of days to check on my progress. Even though revision surgery is usually more complicated, the cost was almost on par with Mexico, so I really wish I had just had the procedure with Dr. Waldrep to begin with.

    New 60+ Thread

Hi everyone, I am now recovering from a pacemaker revision, asserious as lapband and on same side as port just at shoulder, so still having some pain on left side. I have made trip to Doctor for discharge lost 1 lb 14 days after surgery , not too discouraged since I never was a huge eater, but grazer, so now I am on 30 20 30 and no snacks just 3 meals a day! I am on bed rest till 2/29, so am really bored and have eith read every book, magazine and newspaper in house, Can not shower till 2/29 so sponge bathing is the way to go, UGH! Protein intake is good, Soft proteins are not so bad and I try for 15 proteins grams per meal. Also have found the vitamins and calcium citrate chews on my program seem to satisfy my sweet tooth. My dear husband has been a doll and yesterday looked at me and said I can see you are loosing weight, Made my day! Although I can't see it.
  5. I've not had a revised sleeve, but I revised from lap band to sleeve. Full disclosure, I went several years in between surgeries. BUT, I can say with experience that the weight loss was (and continues to be) slower to come off the 2nd time around. Another case in point: a friend of mine who also converted from lap band to sleeve lost a total of 6 pounds in her first 2 months! Be patient. Stay the course and it will happen.

  7. Nazzy, The revision from band to sleeve is going to cost me $12,500. That's the cost in Calexico. This doctor has been used by many of the regulars on LBT. I've heard nothing but good things about Dr. Aceves and his staff. Cheryl __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  8. The reason I would like to revise to a sleeve is because I don't like the idea of a band around my stomach. It sounds dangerous to me. When I think of a tight rubber band around my finger for a day, and what the end of my finger looks like at the end of the day, then I think about the band being there. Ultimately, I think it's dangerous. I would like to get the sleeve before I have problems from the band. I already have occasionally acid reflux, and I am afraid this is the beginning of problems to come. Plus I like the idea of never having to worry about another fill. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

    Self Conscious....

Hey All, My name is Rebecca and I am almost 29 and married from NJ. I have about 70-80 lbs to lose....I had my band for a year and just got it removed two days ago. I am doing a 3 month medically supervised diet then revising to the sleeve in September. I know I have to kick up my exercise regime once my surgery incisions heal up. I am a big fan of yoga but have found it to be hard since I have gained weight (At one point I was down to a size 8/10 but gained the weight back to a size 20). I have a gym membership but find it hard to motivate myself to go because I am very self conscious of the way I look. I need to get myself to go and walk on the treadmill or go to one of their classes and not care if people look at me. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get over the gym jitters? Thanks!
  10. Hello, I am having revision to sleeve 28 December. I am ready because my lapband slipped last year and stopped working. Also the closer it gets, I am eating more even though I run and cycle. My current weight is 210, I have the working out part down, just need and want to lose weight so I can feel better about myself and be lighter on feet and on bike. Want to look better for a 51 year man. I want to run the New York Marathon next year. Good luck to everybody.

Reno or N. Nevada Bandsters out there???

I meet with my doctor on 8/2 to see if he can do a fill and if not we will discuss other options. I can try to have fills un floro or have a revision to reposition the port. I think the nurses name that tried my fill was Lori. She was very nice but had a difficult time.
  12. All the information is very limited, and most of the stats/studies that are out have excluded a number of the participants. There just isn't enough data yet. I posed the same questions as you about the damage being done to the stomach after suturing and pleating for how many ever years. My other issue is the ghrelin producing fundus is still intact. Imbrication and plication from everything I've read are the same procedure. The POSE procedure seems a little different from the information I've read. But, for me it's too close to the ROSE procedure being offered to RNY patients, and the failure rate long term with the ROSE procedure is extremely high that most RNY/revision surgeons aren't even offering it any longer. Best wishes in your research.
  13. I can eat roughly about 3-5 ozs before I feel full. To-date I have lost about 30 lbs. I was a small BMI and a Revision from a Band to the Super Sleeve. I have not regreted my choice. Jo

Calling all (TGVP) people!!! new procedure

Thank you ALL of you for answering my questions. I will be private pay (I guess like everyone who gets Plication). Do any of you know how many Plications Dr.Watkins has done and what package he charges? It looks like Dr. Corvala has done over 50. Those are the two Drs that I am considering the most right now. I have started reading your Fat Woman On A Mission Blog and I think it's great! Any and all of you, I would eat up any info you can your experiences with Hospitals/Drs. Whoever it was that had a bad vibe from one particular Dr, can you please PM me and tell me who and why? I have never had surgery before so I want to try to anlyze best I can. I live in the South, and there is a Dr. in FL that I think does it, but I want to go to someone with a few surgeries under their belt. Has anyone had shoulder pain from the gas they put in your stomach? Just curious. Also did most of you go see your regular Dr. for a physical first? I am think that might not hurt. I am loving the fact that you all seem to be staying full! I wouldn't be suprised if any one of you get a call from Oprah or one of the Doctor shows.. to me, this surgery is wonderful! For any newbies.. I think I found the IRAN orgination.. 15. Indeed the sutures (stitches) we use are third generation synthetic silk sutures (Ethibond) and they do create a reaction which is stronger than the stitch alone which is a good thing. They are reversible, however, because you can separate them surgically. We know this because we do it all the time with band revisions. We use the same suture the same way with band surgery and we have the luxury of knowing what these look like many years later and we know that we can reverse them because we do it all the time during band revisions. The simple answer is that it is indeed reversible. The more complex answer is that it would take a surgery to reverse it and it would be a process to separate each suture and the reaction around it. I think it is also important to note that patients who have weight loss surgery do not want it reversed! The reality is that it is quite the opposite - patients would never consider having it reversed. It is comforting, though, to know that if you ever wanted or needed your entire stomach, it is still there and still functioning normally - it's just smaller so that you can lose weight without feeling deprived or starved. December sleevers!

I was a revision from band to sleeve, so had two drains (more extensive surgery with higher risk of complications like excess bleeding, leaks etc). The drains came out yesterday - yowsa that smarted. Really, it hurt, but it was over fast and now I am so happy to be FREE of those dang drains. I am down 11.8 pounds since surgery, more like 20# siince started preop diet. I feel like things are starting to happen - woo hoo!

    December sleevers!

Hi! I'm not technically a December sleever but sooo close, my surgery is scheduled for November 30. Dr. Jossart is my surgeon. I was originally going to be sleeved on 9/26 but ended up with my band removed (I'm a revision from a lap band to a sleeve), and my gall bladder out. I am so excited and I look forward to hearing about everyones journey and successes.

    Questions to ask during consultation

There are different types of weight loss surgery. The different types affect the amount of weight loss expected and the speed of weight loss. They affect the revision rate (this relates to how often one might need to have the surgery modified or corrected or adjusted or changed to another type of surgery). I choose RNY gastric bypass because it had the smallest revision rate. It also produced the quickest and deepest weight loss. Also because of a pre-existing medical condition "major acid reflux or GERD", it was the only procedure recommended for this type of condition. But it also means that I have to follow a strict Vitamin regime for the rest of my life because my body no longer synthesizes Vitamins from the food that I eat. The process of getting surgery is not simple. It has many steps. Qualifying for insurance is one of them. But then you need to undergo an evaluation by a Psychologist. There is a half day of pre-op testing to uncover any medical condition that may impact the surgery. Generally there is also a half day of classes in which almost all aspects of the surgery and meal plan and vitamin regime and exercise are covered. Many insurance plans require that you undergo a medically supervised dieting and exercise program in order to qualify.
  19. I went to dinner with MissMonaAZ tonight, just got home. It took her an hour to get a bowl of Soup down. She's decided to get a revision in Feb to a sleeve. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  20. That's a good question lol I know the Bypass is the best option esp with the long term results, but the whole malabsorption really scares me I'm going to attend another support group tonight with a friend of mines who did the lap-band 9 years ago. She is thinking of revising to the Bypass herself. Her surgeon said the lap-band is just like the sleeve and it's a waste of time. We go to the same medical group just see different surgeons. So I guess you guys are right each surgeon is different. I would be concerned about a surgeon who says the sleeve is just like the band and a waste of time. The theory behind the two, restriction of food intake, is the same but that's about it. There are plenty of people, me included, who are amazingly successful with the sleeve. I've lost close to 130 lbs and am 2 years post surgery. I think you need to gather all the information you can and go with the procedure that's right for you. 21. I was sleeved 7 years ago and regained all the weight. I maintained my weight loss for 5 years and then over a 2.5yr period I gained it all back. I am now scheduled to have a revision surgery. I feel a lot of shame about regaining, which I am now learning isn't helpful. What I have learn't from regaining is that I have an addiction to food. For me to be successful going forward I need to focus on what motivates me to overeat, and come at the problem from a psychological perspective. Despite everyone saying that you need to work on your head, after my surgery I thought I would never regain and I could get away with not looking at how I became morbidly obese in the first place. I don't know what is happening for you, but if you haven't already I would possibly look into Overeaters Anonymous or seeking help from a therapist, plus a dietician.

  24. Looks delicioso! Can I ask, did you ever have difficulty digesting Kale? Also, how far out from surgery did you wait to try it, or do you recommend? I had issues with it when I had the Lapband (prior to my recent Lapband revision with Gastric bypass).

    Please Help Me Decide ...

I don't regret getting my band bc I would certainly have climbed to over 400 lbs without it, but I am revising to a sleeve on 6/25 due to complications with my band. I too did not have the sleeve options when I was banded 6 years ago. On lapbandtalk.com you will find many wonderful success stories and many horrible complications as with any surgery. Do your research and find what fits you best. I personally am ok with having 85% of my stomach cut out after having the horrible complications I had. But I am still not ok with the bypass. Good luck!
