I HATE protein shakes
BostonStrong617 replied to dannieeliza's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
After having to drink them so often after the surgery I HATED protein shakes too! I had my favorite brand and flavor and still couldn't do it. I was drinking Glucerna, but ironically the sugar alcohol made me dump...so I had to get protein through yogurts, puddings (sugar free), milk and tuna. it was tough, but it does get better. Hang in there! -
I have no strictures or other limits on food. I get hungry! Cereal and bagels are a nightmare for me because they make me hungry with "rebound" hunger from the carb. If it doesn't impact you that way, then maybe the carb heavy meals are not a problem. Seems like you are maintaining well. breakfast: I often have a premier Protein or Egg Beaters and a low fat sausage. If i get fancy, there is a veggie/sausage/egg beater omelette. I would wind up eating half for breakfast and the other half for lunch Lunch: lately I seem to be missing lunch often. Not such a great idea... Some of my favorites: -left overs from breakfast -salmon patty served over salad with a little blue cheese -sandwich meat and cheese in a lettuce wrap Dinner: protein and veggies and salad snacks: I try to not eat before bed, but if i do it is a Protein Drink (good - better than snacky food!) or Protein Bar (not so good) I might also have a yogurt, leftovers from dinner etc.

1. Breakfast. I really struggle with this one. Can you give me some low carb, low fat ideas for breakfast? I've been eating bagels and cereal which I feel is too high carb. I have chicken breast for breakfast almost every day. Greek yogurt is an option that is higher Protein and lower carb than cereal or bagels too. 2. lunch. I hate smoothies- and I eat out a ton because of my job. Anyone have any great lunch ideas that will keep me satisfied until at least the afternoon? Some form of lean protein + green veggies will keep you very satisfied. Tuna salad made with chopped green veggies and guacamole or low fat salad dressing, for example. 3. Snack I don't really like snacking but I do get hungry in the afternoon. I've been eating beef jerky. Any other ideas as to what will keep in my car? You could do Protein Bars or nuts, but jerky is probably your best option in terms of bang for your caloric buck. Try mixing it up with different kinds of jerky: turkey jerky, salmon jerky, bacon jerky. I buy variety bundles of Ostrim jerky sticks, they have lots of different meats (ostrich jerky, elk jerky) as well as all kinds of different flavors. 4. dinner. I'm always at a loss for dinner. What do you eat? My usual dinner is a couple ounces of fish with an egg poached or baked on top, also some green veggies. Sometimes I add some cheese and/or sauce to bump up the flavor. 5. Late night snack. I like to eat before bed although I know I shouldn't. Hopefully I can get some options here besides cereal which is my go to. My usual late night snack is either Greek yogurt or some nuts and a couple pieces of dried fruit.

Need help to find the best protein power
lmm300missouri replied to wif3ysince08's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
unjury unflavored is great to add to things like yogurt or many others. Protein items from sams or costco are not bad. But but an individual one at quicky stores to see if you like. I usually love strawberry and couldn't drink it. I like the pwd vanilla the best. But everyone wrote don't over buy and it was so true. You buy like the old you but the new you eats and drinks so little you don't need a lot. My husband likes it all or I'd be returning so much. -
Try using unsweetened apple sauce or Greek yogurt

Need more calories
thisfathasgot2go replied to Runner1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I track my calories on myfitnesspal and yes, my calories are low, but I am currently ONLY looking at Protein, not calories at this time. I am 5 days post-op and I am on liquids only for the next 10 days and my goal is 65 per day per my NUT. Today, through 6PM, I have consumed 351 calories, and 52 grams of protein. My meals consisted of Premier Protein, Dannon Greek Yogurt, Low Sodium Butternut Squash Soup and I have another 1/2 Premier Protein to drink before bed. I am also adding in sips of Water. -
Is it possible to get more than 80grams of protein without shakes?
Bufflehead replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It might depend on how much you can eat at a meal or how many snacks you are allowed? Here's a sample menu extracted from my MFP diary: Breakfast: 3 oz chicken breast - 90 calories, 19 protein mid-morning snack: light string cheese + 2 slices Trader Joe's Healthy Ham - 90 calories, 16 protein Lunch: 3 oz chicken breast + 1.5 ounce green veggies + 1 T. light salad dressing - 130 calories, 20 protein mid-afternoon snack - 1 oz turkey jerky, 60 calories, 11 protein Dinner: 2 oz fish with a poached egg on top, 1.5 oz veggies w/ 1.4 T. butter - 185 calories, 16 protein after-dinner snack - 1 ounce cocoa roast almonds, 160 calories, 6 protein Totals: 715 calories, 88 protein If chicken for breakfast doesn't appeal to you, you could swap it out for a nonfat or lowfat Greek yogurt and still meet your targets. All that said, there is no way I could have eaten 3 ounces of just about anything at 3 months out, which is why I kept doing protein shakes. And, I don't want to discourage you from getting all your protein in, but that won't have any bearing on your hair loss. Sadly, hair loss is what it is and all the protein, biotin, and special expensive shampoos in the world won't change it. -
Is it possible to get more than 80grams of protein without shakes?

You could try the clear Protein drinks like Isopure or Syntrax nectar. They don't taste as thick as milk based shakes. You can also try having Soup or broth with a bit of unflavored protein. Non shake based suggestions: Try adding a mid-morning snack to the mix.Try also adding a tbsp of nut butter and or greek yogurt as a snack. If you don't have a cholesterol problem, eat the whole egg. Most of the good bits are in the yolk. Add a bit of shredded cheese to the eggs. I've read other posters have a Protein Bar for snack instead of shakes. I'm not a fan of Protein Bars, but the qwest bars seem to be really popular. ETA: Try this: Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1/8 shredded cheese 2 sausage links - 24protein Snack - qwest bar 20 protein lunch - 2 ounce baked chicken ½cup of romaine (or spinach leaves for another 2gms protein) hard boiled egg and shredded cheese with either a light vinaigrette or oil/balsamic vinegar or salsa to keep calories low) 17 -19 protein Snack: String cheese 7 protein dinner: 2 ounce baked chicken or other lean meat. Dark green leafy veg ~ 9 protein That should give you between 76 - 80 grams of protein without a single shake and plenty of Fiber to keep you regular. Add an Isopure nocarb drink (40 grms protein per bottle)diluted with Water and you increase your protein to close to 100 -
Sorry for misunderstanding; my post-op instructions include pudding and yogurt as part of the 'full liquid' diet--to begin immediately upon discharge from the hospital. But my point still stands--can you try mixing it into only a tablespoon or two of a Protein shake, instead of the whole thing? It'll be much easier for taste to get it down in a few mouthfuls instead of a whole shake, especially since you can't chug anymore. I did that today with a juice in a spoon did it but I had to wash my mouth out soon nasty still Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk

I am still pre-op, but I did a lot of crushed pills in my early teen years because I was crazy stubborn about swallowing them lol. Rather than trying to get through an entire Protein shake mixed with medicine, I would try getting the crushed pill down with as little food or liquid as possible. Think maybe a small bite of applesauce/pudding/yogurt, or maybe a tablespoon of a Protein Shake. That way you can get through the icky taste much more quickly and don't have to suffer through sipping down an entire 8oz protein shake that tastes like gross medicine.

I love that apple pie yogurt with a tablespoon or two of PB2 stirred in!

I need advice! on food / stages and carbs
LilyK replied to LilyK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much. In getting my water & my protein shakes. By now I've tried Greek yogurt, egg whites, mushy carrots and some broccoli, tiny bit of cooked chicken. First 2 were great. Vegetables out of the soup and the chicken made my stomach miserable so I'm back to protein shakes & creamed soup tomorrow. Baby steps! -
5 Ways to “Project Manage” Weight Loss for Less Stress and Better Results
Dr. Sowemimo replied to Dr. Sowemimo's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Thanks for your question, Glenda, and congratulations on your road to better health! It is very difficult for many post weight loss surgery patients get in enough fluids and Protein. As far as protein, most people need between 60-80 grams protein each day. Always eat a form of protein at each meal and eat protein-rich foods first. Protein-rich foods are soft, moist beef, poultry, fish, low fat cheeses, Beans, lentils, soy foods, low fat or fat free yogurt (preferably Greek style), milk (non fat (skim) or 1%) and eggs. In addition, you may use good quality protein powders and/or Protein drinks to supplement your diet. Look for protein supplements made with whey protein isolate. Make sure you cut all foods into dime-sized pieces and chew each bite 20-30 times. Eat very slowly and pay attention to the signs of "fullness" you body sends you. If needed, have a protein based snack between meals, such as a low fat string cheese or a 100 calorie Greek yogurt. As far as fluids, patients are advised to get in a minimum of 48 oz of fluids daily - ideal is to get in 64+ oz fluids daily. "Fluids" do not just mean plain Water - it means ALL calorie free, caffeine free beverages. If it is easier to drink water with flavoring in it -then add it in! Calorie free powder and liquid flavors are available in all grocery stores and can be added to your water. You can also add in fresh lemon, lime, ginger or mint to make water taste better and go down easier. You need to be slowly sipping fluids all day long when you are not eating. Take your fluids with you where ever you go and sip constantly. I hope these tips help! If you have any other questions or are still struggling to get fluids or protein, definitely check in with your bariatric surgeon or practice dietitian. Dr. Seun Sowemimo Prime Surgicare Freehold, NJ www.primesurgicare.com I just had my sleeve done on sept 2nd. Having problems getting enough protein and water. Any suggestions? I have tried the different brands and DO NOT like any. What now? -

Puree Stage Baby Food Blues
lrcarr replied to lrcarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Doctor recommended baby food to ensure there wasn't any solid chunks. As far as the yogurt and cottage cheese, I have become lactose intolerant since the surgery. It causes horrible gas pains and diarrhea. What appliance should I use so there aren't any chunks? I don't want to buy something expensive. I am only going to be eating like this for a week. Thanks -
More carbs for intense exercise
sharkgirl replied to Daisee68's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Greek yogurt is another option for carbs. Before I saw my trainer (just now cleared for strength training again), I typically drink a yogurt Protein shake or had a string cheese with a banana. Just remember to make sure you are staying hydrated BEFORE you work out and since it's so early in the morning maybe try some Poweraid. My struggle with intense workout is not being able chug Water. Good luck and stick to it! -
What food to stock, before & after
KarenLoh replied to gsusser's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I stocked up on Premier Protein shakes, Light Greek Yogurt (more protein than regular yogurt), and no-fat Refried Beans. The beans have a surprising amount of protein and I could eat them in little tiny containers and they filled me up and gave me a savory fix. I also got no-sugar-added applesauce and ate it daily for the first two weeks. After that, I got over it and gave that up. I still eat the other things regularly though. I bought little 2 ounce containers to split my yogurt and beans up into and it helped a lot psychologically. Now I use the 4 oz containers for food I make in advance on Sundays for the week. Yay 4 ounces!! I am also single and a mess in the kitchen but I have come a long way! You will too. Good Luck. -
Egg and veggie sausage or bacon (you can boil eggs and make the Protein ahead so you can grab and go) Egg and cottage cheese String cheese and handful of almonds Protein shake Greek yogurt with fruit and/or nuts Cottage cheese and fruit Protein Bar coffee with Protein powder (sometimes it's just one of those days)

Purée cottage cheese?
TMG1980TMG replied to sarahbethemails's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was ok'd to advance to phase two on Day 7- the first step was sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese or sugar free applesauce for 2-5 days than continue. I had no trouble with small curd 1% cottage cheese. It was yummy! ???? -
For Breakfast, I love scrambling a few eggs with a little shredded cheese and green onion and/or red/green peppers. I might also do a couple of Morningstar soy links with an egg. Yogurt (greek or other high protein/low sugar) is also good. Or a smoothie using skim milk, yogurt, throw in a few strawberries and handful of spinach and small banana and you've got something that is portable and tasty and high Protein (just watch the banana/fruit amounts). And when I'm really lazy, a half cup of cottage cheese with a handful of raspberries is good for me. (but I also eat several small meals a day, so about two hours later, I have a glass of Mootopia - a high protein, low lactose milk sold by a grocery chain in Texas).

Tummy pains after eating
kradtke5 replied to larac05's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Introduce one food at a time to your new stomach. It appears your tummy does not like hummus right now. Try something less dense. Cooked and smashed carrots, yogurt, cottage cheese or even some sugar free pudding.
