Surgery on Friday Feb 8th 2013
penny replied to brandnewme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea my dr wont work on smokers I was so thankful I didnt have to worry about that. I only have to have a limited diet for two weeks before surgery. -
Hello all! My surgery was 6/27, and I was put on solids a week sooner than planned due to severe nausea that pills wouldn't touch. It helped tremendously. I have no pain when eating, only sometimes a slight discomfort once it hits my stomach when I'm full. I only eat eggs, chicken, tuna, some cooked veggies, and only tonight had shrimp. I'm worried that I don't get enough protein in during the day. I can only eat about 4 or 5 bites before being full, anymore makes me past the point. I don't drink water afterwards for an hour at least, and I've been working a lot harder to get water in during the day. Has anyone had this issue or worry a month out? Liquid diet question
ncgal44 replied to haroldrussi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been on my pre-surgery diet for a week and I was so confused on the right protien drink to get. I went to GNC and got the 100% Whey protien powder (just like the last poster) in Vanilla, Choclate, Banana Crea and Cookie's & Cream and they are the BEST!!!! Also, from GNC I got a drink mixer real cheap. It has a clear bottom cup and then the red top has a mixer attached that is powered by two batteries and it mixes the fire out of them drinks, a huge difference from trying to spoon mix yourself. Also, I ordered some Vanilla and Choclate on-line from Unjury.com and they were excellent too. GNC is cheaper though. I mix mine with skim milk. -
Liquid diet question....
88KEYZ replied to chrisssssy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine is a 7 day liquid - but basically it is low carbs (40 - 50 per day), no sugars, high protein; so with that said, I can have a hard boiled egg, mozerella cheese (0 carb - 0 sugar) and lean steak or skinless chicken breast to ease any craving of chewing or taste of meats; Today is day 3 - I have dropped 6 lbs so far and doing good. My surgery will be this Saturday the 19th in Mexico. -
Mandi I am not yet banded but I was told by my surgeon that I had to have the testing to rule it out even though I didn't think I had it. (he has EVERYONE he does surgery on either do a clinic or oximeter test) They told me I would be surprised by how many obese people have it don't know it. They told me that now since I was diagnosed as having sleep apnea that I would have to have the CPAP for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery, while in the hospital and 2 weeks after surgery because by treating my sleep apnea it will promote healing. They also told me that the anestegiologist (sp?) will take more precaution due to the apnea. My thought on that was they should be taking that precaution on everyone anyway. I don't know really. I just wanted to pass on what I have been told. There are alot of others that never had it. My friend that is going to the same surgeon did an oximeter test at home and she was told that since her O2 stats never went below 97% she does not have to do the clinic because she doesn't have apnea. If you are not comfortable with the whole thing yet talk with your doctor and tell him your concerns. Let him explain his reasoning. I have read so many different opinions on this.

Liquid diet question....
gordonfamily3 replied to chrisssssy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor has something different. Mine was a 2 week liquid diet pre-op and now he does a 2 week liquid after becuase patients were advancing themselves faster then they should. So it's best to ask your own doc. Some just require a clean out the weekend before, some a week of liquids, I have heard of some requiring a 4 wk...that would have been SO tough! Good Luck!!!! -
Crohns patient requirements
azmassage2000 replied to azmassage2000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea I herd good things for symptoms for anything cause for IBD. My surgeon did not recommend that one because crohns patients lose there intestines so we need to preserve them. I will probably have a bowl resection surgery in about 3 years according to my test -
Hi, i am planning for surgery in November. I will only have about 5 sick days i can take with my unpaid FMLA, seeing as i have to be able to lift 30 pounds to return to my job i could be out 2-6 weeks. I am considering Short term disability, my employer has Aflac. How can i get them to paid for the time off and the hospital time? I know it has to be medically necessary but they also say they do not cover "pre existing conditions" which could include obesity. Obviously im not planning on telling the Aflac rep of my surgery intentions.. I just don't want to waste the money out of my pay if they won't cover my time off, I cant afford to be out of work and sadly it will all go on credit cards if I cant come up with something. 😓

I'm also on Vitamin D and he said wait 2 weeks and take it as normal after that

Had my final weigh in today and my documents will be sent to Cigna for review next week. I was told I would be called within 3 weeks to hear if I was approved and that surgery will happen in about 2 to 3 months after that. I’m a little bummed that after my 4 plus months of waiting to submit my insurance documentation that I would have to wait another 2-3 months. How long from submitting your insurance requirements for approval to your surgery date did you have to wait? Does 2-3 months sound like an excessive wait after approval or is that average?

4 weeks post op and depressed.
firelle replied to orion9941's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's pretty crappy. Weight lost is weight lost, right? And everyone loses at different rates, especially when their body is still recovering. You don't need to feel anxious and nervous about "doing it right" and meeting some statistical chart. This is a huge change for both you and your insides, and you're only 4 weeks out. You'll probably lose faster in some months than others, and slower in some months, anyway. It sounds like he just berated you for following the plan, and didn't offer any constructive help. That being said, I think it's definitely in your best interests to continue your follow-up care. You should have the right to request an appointment with your surgeon or the RN, and tell them that you're not comfortable meeting with the PA anymore. -
Weird insurance question?
Uomograsso replied to RainbowBrite57's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Aetna and they require 90 day physician supervised weight management. Main thing my surgeon said was to make sure last visit was on or after day 90 or I would be rejected. I did monthly visits about 4 weeks apart with my last visit on day 91. I started in middle of the month around the 15th to make sure I could get each month visit in without worrying about running into the next month. Also make sure your PCP clearly notes that your visit is for weight management and not just a general visit or they can reject for that. Just the hoops you have to jump through. -
Hey all! I started my liquid diet on Monday and I’m down 9 pounds!! However, ever since “eating healthy” I feel like my body has gone into like a shock which I’m sure is normal. I get headaches every day (even wake up with them) and am not sleeping as long as I used to. I know this could be from lack of caffeine and change of diet. I am trying to avoid taking ibuprofen (motrin) as my surgery is next week (8/6). Any suggestions for headaches?

How long must I be on liquids??????
CheckYes replied to rktaurus71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on liquids until I see my surgeon on Thursday (one week post op). If I've tolerates liquids well then she will move me to pureed foods. That being said, I dont think it's wise to go against your doctors orders. Call and get permission and it will ease your mind. -
Day 1 post op question
sheky17g replied to finallytime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh and don't sweat the protein yet. You can usually start that 3 days or so out depending on the surgeon. -
I am still very early in this whole process but I was reading on the website of the hospital that I will eventually have my surgery at, that I would be on a "full liquid diet" for two weeks prior to the surgery. Now what I understand to be a full liquid diet from my experience working at a nursing home is that you can have Clear liquids but also creamy Soups, ice cream, etc. A "full liquid diet" isn't the same as a "clear liquid diet" I don't believe? What have been your experiences and what were you able to drink? Robin

You will need to talk with your surgeon and/or the practice's nutritionist to find out exactly what they mean and what they want you to be on. If you use the search function on here and look for pre-op or pre-op diets, or just run through the threads, you will find there is no one answer that is correct. The only correct one is the answer you get from your surgeon. Most (surgeons) believe (based on a couple of studies) that high protein, low carb, low fat diet for two weeks pre-operatiively shrinks the liver so that it can be more safely retracted and held out of the way during surgery. (Some don't require a pre-op diet, it depends on the surgeon.) I won't go into specifics about how the studies also showed that optimal shrinkage took six weeks, but I'm guessing the belief is that two weeks of shrinkage is helpful and safer for the patient. Also the two weeks of liquids preop helps to get you used to the liquids, you won't be eating solids for some time after the surgery as your stitches need to heal and "seat" the band on your newly formed pouch.

Good luck on yor first day back to work. I am a nurse in the ER. I took one week off and hen went back. I also work over night. Make sure you have a glass or bottle of water and every time you get a chance drink a few sips. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated. Also remember you can not eat as fast as you use to. Those were a few things that I ran into when I went back to work full time. Hope your shift ones well.

Thanks! I know I just need to take a breather and chill lol! How long we're you in the hospital? When/if I'm approved my doctor wants to schedule me for Sept 24 which is a Tuesday. I already talked to my boss about everything. Because I just started my job 3 weeks ago I won't be able to take much time off at all. Luckily I work in an office and I'm hoping ill be able to be back at work by the next Monday. -
healthy stuff won't go down!
Boo Boo Kitty replied to abeaher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been there. There are many many many things good for you that you can eat. I would NOT eat whatever goes down, it can cause bad habits. Try canned chicken breast, it is much like tuna fish and usually very soft. Tofu is great as well if you like it! Please don't just eat whatever will go down. You aren't dieting, you are eating healthy, there is a difference. If you eat junk you are hurting yourself by making habits you are trying to break. I find that a week or two after a fill I begin to feel better. Eat more slowly, and blend things if need be. See your Dr if you don't feel better soon, maybe you are too tight! Good Luck! -

Don't stress over it. Eat what you can tolerate. You have the band so don't kill yourself trying to diet. There was a time for about a month that I could not eat much...and I tried so desperately to eat eggs, carrots, chicken...even chicken salad, turkey...even mushed.... I tried to eat healthy. But it wouldn't go down. I was so desperate for food that I ate Doritos. They went down. Another time I was hungry, I reached for peanut M&Ms my daughter had...they went down. So, I lived off them for a few weeks. Drinking milk for Protein. That time passed and that chicken salad was delicious! So, do what you gotta do to get food down. In the big picture it's not that bad of a thing. But always talk to your doctor. -

Great suggestions....Turkery meatloaf...yummm. I do need to get a little more creative with meals, it is just hard (busy working mother of 3 young kids). Thanks!! -
I didn't start protein shakes until 1 week out according to my program. Only clear liquids for the first week. Call your NUT as soon as you can. Look through your paperwork, maybe you have something in there that was overlooked. I know I had to continuously refer to my sheet to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. Good Luck!!!
