  1. Wow!! Mashed potatoes! I have been dreaming of food all night. Isn't that crazy? My MD here wants 7-10 days post op of clear liquids. I am sick of Gatorade and Powerade. Chicken broth seems so salty. True hunger has set in. Next week I can go to cream based soups and the week after that I can have mushy food. So it will be about a month before I can have fork and knife food. As far as weight, I gained some initially (maybe fluid retention?) but now I am back down to where I was prior to surgery. Wishing you continued good luck. Let me know how it goes with the food intake this week!
  2. I guess I dislike the mindset that this decision is the easy way out. I've lost 80 lb by diet pills, eating 1000 calories, then weight lifting 45 min a day and walking 4 to 8 miles a day in addition to my daily steps. Working out 2 hours a day 5 days a week is not sustainable. Over 10 years it crept up. I've been to many Dr's and am told my Hashimoto's and genetics makes weight stubborn. I don't think this is the easy way out by any means though. Sent from my SM-N920T using the BariatricPal App

    Force Feeding

Ok, so don't beat yourself up too much. You have to learn from this. Not sure how far out you are but this is a process. My therapist tells me over and over that I did not gain all this weight overnight and how could I possibly expect change those lifelong habits overnight. Well more accurately she even says how could I imagine changing it in 10 months (as I am 10 months post-op). I made some bad choices this weekend - at least scallops aren't a terrible choice! Track it and make a note how full you got and how miserable that made you and it will remind you next time. The only way I seem to learn is by vomiting. Not really the way I want to learn that I ate too much! Own up to it, see it on paper, reflect on how you don't want to feel this way again and then move on. If we don't learn from our mistakes, we just keep beating ourselves up and move back towards that old cycle we all lived before of overeating. Don't let that happen!
  5. First, I am not a believer that liquid go straight thru the band....depending upon how tight you are.... It's 4 am, having my first cup of coffee....have not had any food in 10 hours at least.... I can the coffee sit in my pouch, and pass through the band like Water circling a slow drain...also making the infamous "Gurgling" noises...I'm always tightest in the morning....and the pouch relaxes - stretches as the day goes on (looser also a misnomer) I have even had water come right back up if I "Gulp"..drink too much too fast.... So no,,,water does not pass right thru the band..... I am also a believer that the pouch...same as the stomach...naturally stretches and contracts like a balloon....and being unaware of this will cause dilation...just like the "Beer Belly" I used to have.....Thus the 5-day pouch test I do at least once a month for my only maintenance... I do not believe water washes th food down....I believe water with food adds to the volume of what's already siting in the pouch waiting to pass through the band ...possible causing extreme dilation and maybe slippage? I know this to be true from experience....If I drink water while eating, it will cause EXTREME PAIN.....and more often than not come right back up..... In the early days, I have used this to my advantage when I got stuck....sip warm water...adding to the volume causing it ALL to come out and out....No More Stuck! Although I have not been stuck in over a year now.... Off Topic...I am always amazed how someone will make a statement....and it keeps getting repeated until it becomes fact....my question is...have you ever EXPERIENCED It? Or are you just repeating it....
  6. Hi everyone! I have not been on for awhile. Things have been crazy with moving to a new home and whatnot. Just wanted to give a little inspiration to everyone. I have now lost 70 pounds since surgery and a total of 84 pounds. So great full for my sleeve. I went from a size 22/2X to size medium tops and 10 bottoms. I feel 10 years younger!

    So many questions about Mexico

There are several surgeons in Mx to choose from. The price range varies from 4k - 11k. Experience, location (coastal vs boarder town), and venue (clinic vs hospital) plays a big part in the pricing. If you're going alone two surgeons stand out due to them having very hands on coordinators in Tijuana. Dr. Ponce de Leon/Trish and Dr. Illan/Omar. Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Aceves are the most expensive but they also have excellent reputations on both sides of the boarder. Dr. A. Ortiz and Dr. Pompa both work out International Centers of Excellence (I.C.E) and Dr. A. Ortiz has been doing WLS (mostly Lapband I think) for a long time. I don't know as much about Dr. Pompa. A Lighter Me has been in TJ for 10 years and they have different surgeons to choose from and different locations like TJ, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Guadalajara, and more I believe. ALM's feature surgeon is Dr. Lopez. Ready 4 a Change and ALM were once one company. I believe they have similar locales. Their pricing is similar. Their feature surgeon is Dr. F. Garcia. He has about 8+ years experience. Very well reviewed. Dr. Almanza at Jerusalem Hospital is very well known. His hospital is a clinic. There are many threads about him. Those are the names I know best and have researched at one time or another. I chose Dr. Lopez with ALM although I may switch to Dr. A. Ortiz. I have sleep apnea and a heart issue, SVT, that kicks in every once in awhile and I think an I.C.E. location might calm my nerves. I'm sure there are many others who can chime in with even more data and expand this list. Good luck. Amanda Rae

    Do you ever?

Georgia, you said it best! Fat brain still reigns over me! I still think I need to shop in the plus section, and find it foreign to shop in Misses...I'm a size 6 M/S. It funny how we get so used to the way things are/have been and how it takes us so long to adapt. Whenever I try clothes on, I always get a 6,8 and 10, because my Fat Brain says 'A 6 is WAY too SMALL!', guess what, it never is! It's the same way when I go grocery shopping, or cook, or go out and order food at a restaurant. My Fat brain says 'you need MORE' 'That portion is WAY too SMALL!', guess what? I usually have TONS of left-over...I'm almost a year and a half out, am still losing, and still have a VERY Fat brain! Just ignore it, it may never go away, but your body knows better! Congrats on your loss so far!
  9. I had surgery 10/2014 so I'm not quite at 6 mths yet. I've lost 96 lbs which I am SUPER PROUD of so in no way is my question meant to negate that. I was just wondering though, at what point are you out of the rapid weight loss phase and really need to push? Even given the dramatic weight loss, I'm still 50 lbs from my recommended/goal weight but I've pretty much kinda plateaued the last few weeks and no matter what I do, it doesn't really budge.
  10. "For instance, loose skin, saggy breasts and Hair loss. Has anyone ever experienced any of these and if so, how did you deal with it? Is there anyway at all to prevent these things from happening?" Hair loss - happens as your body reacts to the extreme quick weight loss. It goes on for a couple of months and then it stops and your hair comes back. I don't know anyone who has avoided it. It's temporary. You don't say if you have kids, but if you do, your boobs already sag. Will this make them sag more? Yep. Any way to avoid it. Stay fat. But if you are going to have surgery, nope. As for loose skin, that depends on many things - age, ethnicity, skin condition, amount of weight loss. I have some flab flapping around, but I lost 150 pounds. I wear those flaps like a badge of honor. I haven't had plastics. I'm about 3 years out from surgery and the mother of a 19 year old and a 16 year old. My boobs would have been sagging anyway because - GRAVITY. So, you don't need to go under the knife again. Get your head in the right place about why you are losing your weight. Adopt the plan early and exercise to the extent you can now. Best of luck.

    6 days out on Christmas

I would stay away from carbs. Try cream of chicken Soup made with high Protein skim milk. Banded 10/12/16
  12. If you like your sweets like I do, you've got to try this recipe I made yesterday. It rocked my world! 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder 10 packets of splenda 1/4 cup of smooth peanut butter 1/4 cup of margarine You melt the peanut butter and margarine in a small saucepan just enough to soften it, then you mix it with the dry ingredients, press the mixture into a square pan and chill it in the refrigerator for an hour, then cut into squares. I made my first batch last night and wow oh wow was it good! What a treat for this sweet tooth and so filling. Nutritional info: 9 servings - 60 calories per serving, 6 g protein per serving, 2.5 g fat per serving, 4 g carbs per serving, 2 g sugar per serving

    May 19th band date

I was banded May 19 also. I have been having feelings like I am going to burp or urp or something. I keep fighting it. I am wondering if the yogurt was getting to me. I haven't ate any today and have only had this a little. I am so afraid of messing up my surgery. Anyone having anything like this?

    Still not really losing

Must say I have never heard of 2 meals per day. I am instructed to eat 4 small meals about 3oz of food total each time with a small snack or maybe 2 if I am hungry. This worked great and I lost about 90 pounds in less than a year. Then I upped the food to 4 to 5 oz and have been maintaining, but need to let go of some of the food and lose the last 10 to 15 pounds. How much food would you have to take in at 2 meals per day to feel satiated?
  15. I agree it is a long wait. There are so many various requirements which differ depending upon the bariatric center, insurance company, and surgeon. I started the process in January 2008. Between Jan and October 2008, I had to complete many, many, many requirements before I could even meet with the bariatric surgeon. I finally saw the surgeon October 8. I completed the H-pylori on October 10 and completed the upper GI on October 14. All paper work was sent to the insurance company on October 15 and I recieved approval on October 16. Looks like my surgery will be November 11, but I am waiting confirmation. Don't give up hang on. You can do this!
  16. My two boys, 10 and 5, were distressed when I told them I was having surgery to help me lose weight. My 10 year old said 'I like you squishy' and the 5 year old said "Mommies are supposed to be soft". Personally, I think they were unhappy because they knew the days of making mommy's belly fat do the wave were numbered. I did the whole explanation thing about how losing weight helps helps you lead a more healthy life but they weren't having any of it. My solution? I simply pointed out that mommy would now be able to take them to the park more often, play laser tag with them for the first time ever and the best thing of all, mommy would be around a lot longer for them. They liked that answer. It also helped I let them videotape the belly wave and I did the 'fat butt dance' for them to record for posterity as well. For the record, the fat butt dance is done in your underwear and shaking your rear end as quickly as possible, usually to a song by the Wiggles OR Van Halen (hey, I'm an artist, people) and a good time is had by all. In the end, they adapt. The husband on the other hand, is REALLY disturbed. He was home for lunch today, gave me a hug and said "Wow...I can actually get my arms around you now!'' And yes, he's still breathing. :grouphug:

    September bandsters

Hi All. I was banded on 19th Sept. Since then I have lost about 10 kgs or 20 pounds. It's slow but I'm coming to terms with that! I have had two fills and with both I had restriction for about a week and then it loosened up a bit. I have no idea how many cc's I have or what cc total my band is. I am going for another fill in early January, which I hope will put me in a better position. During restriction phases after my fills I ate a lot less, but after that, where I am right now, I have found I can eat pretty much anything apart from bread. Old habits do creep in, but I am trying and that's all I can do! I also have to get off my bum and do some exercise!!!
  18. Four days since surgery and I'm off to the races! Here are my starting stats: The day of my consult with Dr. Dunshee was 12/14/10: 300 Morning of Surgery (after a cruise and a 10 day pre-op diet): 292.4 Day after surgery (Dr. said gain of about 5 lbs. was expected): 294.5 Day 2: 293 Day 3: 289.5 Day 4: 286.8 I am so geeked!!!
  19. So I started my preop on Thursday. Its been rough but nothing im going to roll over & die because of. I posted a few days ago when i was on day 1 or 2 and i was extreemly weak and tired, i was even starting to look pale (other family members noticed) i have dropped 7 lbs in the last 4 days which i havent weighed myself yet today. I still have another 10 days to go before surgery & im super nervous. My diet is strictly liquids the last 3 days ive been having a hard boiled egg (WHITES ONLY) because I feel like im loosing all energy & strength & i have a hyperactive 3 year old so I dont have room to be burnt out & tired with no energy. Is this bad that ive been having egg whites daily for the past 3 days. I eat one in the morning and one in the evenings. I dont want it to affect my liver shrinking yet i dont understand why some doctors required the 2 week preop and some dont when everyone wants there liver shrunk, so my question is, is having an egg white in the morning and evening of a 2 week preliquid diet going to affect my liver shrinkage? today i have not have egg whites and i dont feel like i had much energy as i did yesterday, im hoping today ill go without them even if it makes me tired all day.

    40 and headed for Fabulous

Hello, I am 5"1, my highest weight 256lbs, currently 220 lbs, have been fighting diabetes and up/down weight for over 10 years . I was able to get off insulin 5yrs ago, but still take these big horse diabetic pills daily.. and still have a problem with eating right, which I can feel the after effects of eating too much sugar/carbs. I am still on the fence as to gastric bypass or sleeve, because the bypass has high success rate 90 percent to put diabetes in remission, but it also in the most dangerous ..This Tuesday 5/20/14 I go for my surgeon visit ,psych eval. and nutrition visit total of 3 hours. If I am considered a good candidate they will give me a surgery date. I am really nervous about the surgery. I have been lucking enough to have had a lot of hospital stays in my 43yr old life. But, I will keep you posted on how it goes and my journey, thanks a lot for the post. It is good to know that someone else is can understand my journey.
  21. I was constantly told to lose weight by doctors but WLS was never suggested. I should have had the surgery 10-15 years ago, and the stigma absolutely pushed me away from it. I was ashamed that I couldn't do it on my own I guess...and yet I didn't think a bit less of anyone else who had it. I am only 7 weeks out but I can already tell that I made the right decision and I wish I would have done it sooner instead of spending my youth obese, unhealthy and unhappy. I missed out on so many things because of my obesity. I don't see this changing in the near future, at least not in the United States. People are extremely judgemental and have a punitive attitude when it comes to medical intervention. You see that attitude not only toward obesity but also addiction, pain management and mental illness. I get enraged every time I see someone post something on social media about "You don't need antidepressants, you need running shoes." People think if they just eat enough kale and do enough crossfit that there is no need for a flu shot. People are even judgemental when it comes to cancer! I am all for natural remedies when possible but I am incredibly grateful to live in an age of modern medical interventions and I will absolutely use any tools I can to make myself healthier and happier.

    How do you reward yourself?

I bought myself a 10 punch card for the fitness studio by my house. It includes TRX, Zumba, turbo kickboxing, Piyo ( Pilates and yoga) and belly dancing. It's a blast!!!!
  23. I'm a new sleever looking for a mentor. I'll be sleeved 10/6/14. I'm going at this so blindly. I'm not sure which diet is the best. How to maximize weight loss and time. What kind of activities did you pick up? How did you get over your eating disorder?
  24. I think if you show progress toward losing those 10 lbs, that it will be fine. You will lose another 10+lbs on the pre-surgery liquid diet. I was concerned about the same thing as I spent a few weeks eating "I'd better eat this now because it might be the last time I ever get to eat it" diet prior to my surgeon meeting. Nobody even mentioned it and I had worried myself silly.

    No pre-op diet

Oh dude, a 10 week program would have just killed me!! hahaha But I'm sure I would have found a way to do it. Anything to get this band out at this point! hahaha Waiting to see what he says... most of his patients says it was a week or two of liquids... I can swing that!
