    Surgery 23rd and feeling unsure...

I'm 51, and was banded July 16, 2005. . . I weighed 357 to start. . .(OMG!) 10 months and am now 85 pounds down. . . I wouldn't change my journey for anyone or anything. . . I had an easy time postop, and if I had been a better girl. . . well, would be down even more. . . chocolate and chips became too friendly over the holiday season, and the scale didn't do as much moving as I might have liked, but I was responsible for the slow scale, not my band. . . I made the choices... If I never lost another pound, this journey has been worth the trip... (I went to Mexico as a self pay)... I can see more future now than I ever could before... if you let others scare you.... then you may not allow yourself to become who you want (and deserve) to be Good luck... feel free to email me off list if you like Maggie

Not Sure About This Last Fill...

I am one of those ones that cannot drink cold liquids in the morning...It has to be coffee. I was tight with a fill one time, you will have pressure in your chest even with fluids. I waited 2 months, thinking it would get better...lost 22 lbs I finally had an unfill, it has been 6 mths since my unfill and I haven't lost a pound. I am going April 10 for one more fill...I would like to lose at least another 10 pounds before plastics in June Good luck to you!

    Any Suggestions Please

Could someone explain to me why riding in a car makes your band tighter? I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day so I don't think it would be much different. I ask because I have a 10 road trip coming up the 14th. Thanks

    Losing my mind?

I'm just a little over a week away from surgery and things are beginning to get nutso around here. PMS has started a few days early, I have a group project for grad school to work on that I have no clue how to even get started, and I'm trying to prepare lesson plans for 7 days for a substitute teacher. I want to cry over everything. If a sad commercial comes on tv, I'm guaranteed to cry. If I get frustrated with the school assignment I want to cry. If I read something even remotely sad, I cry. If there's a sad story on the news, I cry. It's never been this bad before and I'm sure that alot of it is my mind trying to come to grips with what is about to happen. I can't have chocolate right now which is my food of choice for dealing with PMS. What can I do????? I can't go 10 days like this but I can't blow my pre-op diet either. HELP! Audra

    Are PB's & Slime Inevitable?

I could say that I had never PB'd until tonight. 5 months after my surgery and I had not pb'd and I ate a bite of an over breaded chicken strip and LOOK OUT. I have had things get stuck and eventually move down but never come back up. I'm still a little miserable. I've heard people say they've had them last for hours but luckily mine was about 10 minutes..which felt like hours. I guess I need to get back to the basics of small bites and lots of chewing. So my secret, until my little incident tonight was to chew chew chew and avoid major carbs.
  6. Hi Everyone 19 days till surgery. I am so excited yet feeling a bit overwhelmed. I feel overwhelmed at the thought that this could really work. After all the failed diets, fads, and programs. Is this really it? I just cannot imagin. Well I can. I weighed 160lbs before my son was born, after that the weight gain didn't stop till I hit my hugh of 173. Today I am 165. Anyone else feel that feeling of "this is a dream"? I am so excited just...you. Thank you to everyone who shares. It is inspiring?
  7. LAP BAND SUPPORT GROUP The next Eastside Surgical Specialists, P.C., Lap Band Support Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 6:30pm. Please note the location change for this meeting. It will be held at the City of Grosse Pointe Woods Courtroom, which is located in the same building as the Police & Fire Department, City Offices and the Community Center. They are in one huge building on Mack, set back off the road, between Moross (7 Mile Rd.) and Vernier (8Mile Rd.). The Court is at the rear of the building on the North Side (Vernier Rd. side). From Vernier: The court is on the right as you drive towards Moross. From Moross: The court is on the left as you approach Vernier. Enter the complex off Mack on the North side (Vernier Rd. side). Do not turn left in front of the building; but continue into the large parking lot and go straight back to the Handicap parking area. Almost even with the handicapped parking spaces is a walkway that comes into the lot. This is the walkway that leads to the door for the court. If you need more info, please e-mail Greg at lapbander081004@yahoo.com or Nancy at nautynnce@aol.com. GRT/NMc

Considering lap band, but I have concerns~

Hi I'm going thru the steps now to become banded... I have sleep apnea and high blood pressure.. I've been on meds for 2yrs now.. I am 5'3 215 with a bmi of 38.1.. On 2/25 I had my lab testing, pscy and nutrition evaluations.. On 04/01 I meet with Dr and the nutritionist, she wants me to lose 2-3lbs.. If all goes well he'll submit everything to the insurance company and I'll be able to schedule a surgery date.. I have to be around 207-205 date of surgery.. I think you have a chance..Check with your insurance and make sure they cover it.. Trying other diets and failing really helps your case.. Go for it
  9. Hey, I'm now 6 weeks post op vsg and I keep hitting stalls. HW: 238 Day of vsg: 228 CW: 204 I lost 19 lbs in the first two weeks. After that, I hit a stall for about a week and a half. I then lost another 5 lbs (slowly) and have been in another stall for the last week. Did this happen to anyone else? How do you restart the weight loss? I also feel like I can fit a lot more food when I eat. At first I was eating very small portions; now I'm able to eat a lot more at one sitting. Is it possible to stretch out the pouch already? Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Mallory

    Caffeine

I agree with the above - the acids in the caffeine can be damaging to your new tummy. I was cleared for real coffee at my 6 week post-op visit. I'm glad I had to be caffeine free prior to surgery - I had serious withdrawals when I first stopped drinking it and had to ween myself off for a week. I'm 10 months post-op now and enjoy between 2 and 4 cups of coffee a day, back to normal!
  11. Hi everyone lets get together and send up prayers for all the March 19 sleeves. Please post to let everyone know that your surgery went fine and anything else you like to add. Set weight loss goals for six months after surgery. I will be first my six month goal is 60 pounds gone by by.
  12. My fantasy was to wear a size 6. Last month, I was shopping at Old Navy. Took 2 pairs of white skinny jeans into the dressing room, 8's and 10's (knowing the 8's probly wouldn't fit but hopeful). I walked outa the store with a 6! I think they were mistagged - they were in clearance. It's the only 6's I can wear, but my fantasy definitely came true. They were only $8 but I probly would've paid $100 for em! They are definitely my fav pants now - just cuz they're a 6! Dreams really do come true! And I'm still 26 lbs from goal so I have many more to come. Maybe a size 4 in my future? Unreal!
  13. Well, I am 10 days until surgery....however that 10 days until VSG surgery, and I don't think I can do it. I waivered back and forth between the band and VSG or almost a year, finally decided on the sleeve, but now I think (I'm pretty sure) I've made the wrong decision. What do I do? Has this happened to anyone? I'm assuming I can call my clinic on Tuesday and tell them I've had a change of heart. But I'm assuming it will need to be resubmitted to my insurance as well.....I just think the sleeve is to drastic. I don't know....maybe I'm just a nut case! I met with the surgeon on Thursday last week and after she explained it all to me (of course I've read, watched videos, etc) but after she talked to me, I started getting this sinking feeling and it's just gotten worse over the weekend. Anyone words of wisdom? I could really use some right now.

    Changing my mind......

Just curious but why the change of heart? I chose the band because I did not want my insides cut and plumbing re-routed and at the time sleeve was not yet being offered nor had I ever heard of it before. I was also 488lbs and I thought at the time my chances of survival on the table was better with the band. To be perfectly honest I am very happy with my band and my results but if I had to do it over again and the sleeve was offered as a choice then I am not so sure I would choose the band again. could it be that you're not really ready for any surgery? This sounds a little more than just pre-op jitters. My recommendation would be to slow down and digest additional information. Don't hold yourself up against a 10 day window feeling like you must make a decision because in the end you maybe rushing your decision because of a timeline. If it were me I would make a pro vs cons list for both surgery types and spend more time thinking about it. It is no doubt a life changing decision. I wish you well with whatever you choose

    GOAL

Wholly Cow! I cannot beleive that I'm staring down at my scale, and it says 160lbs. Who, me? No way....I think I was 16 years old when i weighed that much.... My whole adult life, I battled with my weight...sometimes it was managable, but most of the time, it was out of control. I had given up in the last 10 years. Married, with a loving husband and 2 beautiful children. Life just gets in the way....and the heavier I got, the sadder I got, and the more weight I put on....How many years did i loose out on playing tennis, tobogganing with my kids, going swimming, going skating. Very sad! But, as i can attest, it's possible to change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did so, I'm living proof that with this great tool, I took back control of my life and starting LIVING AGAIN! I'm so greatful to everyone here, and of course, my ETERNAL gratitude to Dr. Aceves!!!!...for the support and enouragment over the last 9 months, and for the courage you gave me to make the 2nd best decision in my life (1st one was accepting my husbands proposal :-)) Here I am, little ole me, at GOAL!! Kisses and Hugs to all of you!! WAS: 273 ON 14JUL2010 NOW: 150 ON 13APR2011 9 MOS-Lost 113 LBS JEANS: WERE SIZE 22 JEANS: NOW SIZE 10 Nuff said!
  16. You sound exactly like my wife. Are you my wife? When I met my wife I was in decent shape. I had lost about 160lbs over 2 years and kept it off for almost 10. Then one day I hurt myself and gained it all back and have been struggling the last 3 with chronic pain. My wife has been against me having wls. Says I should have been able to lose the weight normally like everyone else. Called me a coward. Said things like you must not love your family if you wont even do it for them. But that's not how it works. Would you tell someone with a drug problem to just man up and quit or would you get them professional help?

    Newbie

Hi Everyone!! I am so glad to be here and start this process. This site is so informative and has been so helpful already. I just recently made the decision to have the lap band procedure after debating for the last two years. I am so happy that I have made the decision. I feel like there is light at the end of this tunnell for me.I just started the process, I got the referral from my family dr to go see the bariatric dr - that came highly recommended so I think I made a good choice and he is in my insurance plan. I had to fill out a complete questionair from the bariatric dr and it took a while and and it really confirmed for me that I am making the right choice for me and my life.I have lost and gained 100lbs on my own a two times in my life. I am 34 years old. I have gained and lost the same 20lbs more times then i can remember....I hope to put an end to the roller coster.I know I am an emotional eater and I am also full blooded italian - so my family eats to celebrate everything - even just what day of the week it is....lolI am 248 pounds and about 5ft 5inc tall. Most of my life my weight was 180 - I spent my twenties at 145 for about 10 years....I spend a majority of the time caring for my husband over the last 10 years who was ill, but is on the road to a full recovery!!! So now it is time to take care of me and I am happy to be able to do that...I am so looking forward to this. I wanted to find out if anyone was able to tell me how the insurance part of this works. I am hopping it is covered but not sure how long the approval process takes? Does the bariatric doctor work on getting everything approved? I figure it will be a 6 months process from beginning to surgery? But not sure....Any help would be greatly appreciated.Looking forward to hearing about everyone and their success and struggles and making new friends.Jackie
  18. O my insurance called me and they have (at my request) tried to call the coordinator at the surgeons office over 10 time and left messages to get her the updated insurance requirements for Surgery. They said they have NEVER returned their calls. She hasn't returned any of mine either. Today I faxed some of my documents over to her and requested she call me ASAP. It seems my options are deal with her... Change surgeons (and offices)... file a grievance... What do you all think I should do???

DON?T WAIT TO BUY NEW CLOTHES, Too Funny

WOW I am glad you could laugh that one off. Since the second I had surgery I have purchased clothing non stop and it's my treat to myself. I shop like I used to eat and I love every minute of it. I am fortunate to work in the fashion industry so I get designer jeans for $1-$5 a pair 4 times a year at work. I bought 28 pairs last month with 1/2 at my current size 11 and then the rest at size 9-10 so I am covered for the next few months. I just donate them when I am done to the homeless shelter here in town.

    Did I mess up?

I was banded 4/12 too! Relax Follow what you were told to eat. After surgery your body panics and tries to hold on to fat stores at all cost, so the weight doesn't drop off immediately. Also, you probably gained 5-10 pounds of fluids in the hospital during the surgery. Keep doing what you were told and the weight WILL start coming off. (and in case your wondering, my ticker includes my pre-band weight loss, it's not all in the past 6 days!)

    Calling All (Tobacco) Smokers...

I did all my testing and the last thing to was quit smoking. I went to my physician and she gave me a prescription for Wellbutrin. I started it 10 days before my quit date. I smoked at least a pack a day for over 20 years. On 10/6/14 was my quit date. I haven't smoked since. The Wellbutrin must help a ton because I didn't have the insane cravings and withdrawal like I had when I tried to quit before. 2 weeks later I had my tobacco test and passed. Just got my approval and surgery date for 12/12/14. Still waiting for that super miracle where breathing and life all around is so much better without smoking. Not happening. I enjoyed smoking. I never thought I could quit. I don't plan on smoking again, mostly because of my kids. I'm so happy I had the surgery as a huge motivator to quit. You can do this! It's not easy. The reward at the end is huge!

    2 months post op

I gained 3 pounds before my first fill. The nurse seemed shocked, but from everything I have read on here, it doesn't seem that uncommon. I went out to dinner last night and I had a bite size piece of steak get stuck, but not as bad as before. It blew over in about 10 minutes. I've had it last about 20-30 minutes before. It's like just when you think that horrible feeling is gone, it comes right back. People at work have definitely noticed my weight loss too, but I did end up telling one co-worker, now I wish I didn't, but I don't think she has said anything - HOPEFULLY. But when it comes down to it, if people know about me then whatever. I did it for me not them. You are definitely right about that!

    caffine withdraws???

The preop diet that I did - 2 Protein shakes and 1 meal (meat & vegs) worked! If you stick to it you are going to be hungry but most people lose about 10 pouns. I didn't give up tea but I gave up my diet coke. I didn't have much headache for that. Hope this helps, if you have other questions send me a PM.
