    Fun Topic

Every WLS surgery has it's problems. The problem with bypass is Mal-absorption, and weight gain after a year or 2, That's not the ones that worry me though... Everyone that I know that had this type of surgery has passed away. I don't mean do to Old Age or Disease either. I wish you good health, and please take care of yourself.

    Pouch Stretching and Acid Reflux?

My reflux was extreme with my band, so I removed the band, then had the sleeve put on 2 years later...NO RELFUX! I can sleep without junk coming up my throat--it is sooooo nice, . I agree that the sleeve has very little stretching, and very little ability to stretch--I know serveral people (most in my family) who have done gastric and the weight gain is one reason I went with the sleeve this time...it just made more sense to keep the digestive track intact as much as possible.

    Going out to eat

I'm not "giving up my life". Its all part of my life style chsnge . like I said , eating out is big part of my weight gain over the years. So why go back to it. Sent from my Z970 using Tapatalk
  4. Are you on any type of steroids? Perhaps research your meds carefully and see if any cause weight gain ❤

    re banding after eroded

Dr. Pleatman Does every patient regain their weight? I had my band removed on November 28th 2005 from erosion...I have yet to gain ANY weight back yet...when does this happen? How long after the band is removed will weight gain occur? I would like to think I did learn something from my band journey which is helping me to not gain the 100+ lbs I lost in 18 months with my band.

    lap band AND chronic pancreatitis

I've just had major abdominal surgery for rectal cancer with my lapband in place, that involved removal of a good deal of bowel and rectum and creation of an ileostomy. I've had a bowel obstruction since, and still my lapband is just fine. If its in there and well healed (as it would be after a year and a half) then a competent surgeon can work around it. I was extremely lucky that my colorectal surgeon had started his career with lapbands and by pure chance, workign with my lapband surgeon, but its not an insurmountable problem. I now have to eat a diet that's quite high in white bread, rice and Pasta and as such I am unfilled, there was no need to remove the band at all. Its there in the future when my stoma is reversed if I need to refill it, I will, but so far have had no weight gain. I've had chemo and radiation prior to surgery and am now having chemo again. of course it makes me sick, and of course sometimes I do get so nauseous that I vomit, I've got chronic diarrhoea and due to having my intestines exit before my colon, I am probably not absorbing the nutrients from a lot of what I eat. Both my surgeon and oncologist are on my back about my weight, but even through all this, I am eating well with an unfilled band and have enough energy to run and go to the gym. However, my band wasnt unfilled until right before my surgery, I got through a round of chemo and radiation with the fill in place. It can be done in seconds, at any time, so dont necessarily rush off and unfill if that's not what he wants to do. I feel for your husband, it really is the cruelest blow to reclaim your life and your health, to achieve a lifelong goal of weightloss only to have something like this happen, to make you think you might lose it all. But it really does not have to be that way.

    1 Year Post Op Failure

I'm in the same boat. I didn't gain 20 lbs but did gain and feel terrible about it. I have decided to start from the beginning again. It's frustrating and depressing to see the weight gain but I know I can do this! I just have to get back in the right mind set. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

This Is A Wake Up Call!

Sure we can, this is simply an exchange of opinions. I've got nothing against Sam in any way, I don't doubt that harm was ever intended in any way. I just reflect on my own obesity and my own habits and I can see a direct correlation between treats, and weight gain. Adding some humor is what I try and do - and it can be misinterpreted (and clearly has been). Sammee - If I caused you upset, I apologise. My thoughts on bad food is entirely personal. I fear sugar, I have fears for my grandchild that he lives in a society that sees a massive consumption of 'hidden' and obvious sugars. It scares me. If my humor is inappropriate, I apologise. I sincerely thought when the note was posted about 'trying to kill..." I thought you were lending humor to it as well. I was merely playing along (in my mind). I HAVE to do my diet without treats. I have no band. I have no physical restraint. I have only me. So, I hope you will trully support my belief that it can be done without treats, because if not, I am doomed to be fat for the rest of my life.
  9. Is squash sugar free? And is your tea unsweetened? Ok well, sounds like you've got all the answers you need. Here's a link to opiodes and how it can affect weight. Wish I could copy/paste my arthritis doc for you. That's where my information comes from and from my n=1 experience with them from my degenerative spine and hip disease. I'm blessed cuz after 155+ lbs of weight loss, I just tuff through my daily pain and no longer have to medicate. Additionally I'm on a cancer drug for life that puts me into deep menopause with COMPLETE hormonal disruption. It causes weight gain in the biggest percentage of people. And yet, somehow I have been able to lose weight in the face of taking. I learned last week I will likely have to stay on it for life. So I'm just gonna try to keep tricking my body and mixing things up. Have you tried Intermittent Fasting? BTW, you haven't mentioned WHAT you eat. WHAT you eat is as important as HOW many times you eat, HOW MUCH you eat. I can do a LOT of caloric damage with a 5inch plate. Just sayin. Maybe you could post a typical day or two of meals? Jealous Spouse

I was "normal" sized when we met (around 125 lbs, if I remember correctly). I started my steady weight gaining after I popped out The Kid 8 years later. I've read alot about spouses/partners of those who have lost weight say similar things (i.e., not liking skinny women/men). Which to me is kinda douchey. I mean, if Mr. told me he doesn't like fat women when I gained my 100+ lbs, I'd be doing some serious re-evaluating. Though I suppose until you guys have a real conversation about it, maybe just give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that yes, while he gets turned on abstractly by a relatively bigger physique, in no way does it affect how he feels and is attracted to YOU. P.S. your pic reminds me of Julianna Margulies (the ER actress)!

Starting My C25K Adventure - Looking for Advice

Just wondering if you or anyone doing the 5K's noticed weight gain? I was losing weight during the 1st and 2nd weeks, now I'm slowly gaining weight. I don't think I'm eating more food or making poor choices, I pretty much eat the same foods daily without much variation.

Starting My C25K Adventure - Looking for Advice

Weight gain with increased exercise intensity is pretty common. You will initially retain more water as your sore, tied muscles need it to repair. And, overall you may see a slow down in your rate of loss. My weight loss definitely slowed when I started running, but my body composition began to change pretty drastically. My body fat percentage is declining very steadily now that I am exercising more.

    IUD anyone?

Amy-- I am a PA....but don't do tons of women's health...have never had an IUD....I didn't think IUD's did much for anything but prevention of pregnancy.....but here's what I got when I googled "IUD": Health Risks: Getting any vaginal infection while using an IUD can increase the risk of developing a serious pelvic infection. This can result in a loss of fertility. For this reason, women need to assess their own risk for infection. If you have multiple partners or if your partner has multiple partners, your chance of infection is much higher. Piercing or perforation of the uterine wall may occur during insertion of the IUD. Over time, an IUD may become imbedded in the uterine wall. An Imbedded IUD is still effective, but it can be painful and may need to be removed. There is a risk of surgery and/or sterility if an IUD becomes imbedded. If a woman becomes pregnant while using an IUD, it is highly recommended that she have the IUD removed, whether or not she wants to carry the pregnancy to term. An IUD increases the risk of having a miscarriage or premature birth. A woman who becomes pregnant while using an IUD is also more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches and grows outside the uterus. This can be very dangerous and requires emergency medical attention. Side Effects back to top Both the ParaGard and the Mirena IUDs can cause longer, heavier, and more painful menstrual periods, but this is much less common with the Mirena. The increased blood flow may cause anemia. Spotting may occur without serious cause or as a sign of infection. The Mirena IUD can cause ovarian cysts. Some women using the Mirena stop bleeding altogether. Usually their menstrual periods return when the IUD is removed. Mirena can cause weight gain, headaches, increased blood pressure, acne, depression, and decrease in sex drive. HOpefully, this helps....Personally would ask more questions..... Can anyone help, or....

@PolahBeou Sorry that you are having issues. At 5'5" and 114Lbs. Your BMI is 19.0 Low end of normal. One more pound will be underweight. You said "So far, every doctor I've visited has recommended more exercise and protein. " Wow, exercise contradicts weight gain. Who are these Dr's? Seek new Dr.s and pressure them. Advocate for yourself until you get the help you need. Suggestions (not medical professional advice) Sop exercising. You are burning calories that your body needs. If your surgery restriction is tight, Eat small meals all day to stop weight loss and gain weight. The only way you gain weight is eating extra calories. (High carb and fat) Try a medical grade weight gaining shake and a Liquid/powdered carbohydrates. look on Amazon or GNC

I REALLY hate PCOS...I feel defeated...

Not to be alarmist, but are you sure it is real weight gain and not something causing you to gain water? I had this happen a number of years ago, where I was legitimately NOT eating enough to gain fat, but the scale was increasing. I was dealing with a heart issue at the time, and the weight gain was from that. I had to get on diuretics until my heart was in a better place. Again, not trying to be alarmist in any way, just throwing out that maybe something else is going on and it's not the PCOS. Perhaps you've become more salt sensitive? During the timeframe I noted above, I really had to become aggressive about cutting salt. Not so much anymore, but at that time it was like pouring gasoline onto a fire. It's just usually weight gain of that kind is water weight, unless you are gorging on food day in and day out.

    Everyone Says Something Different!

Wow, in reading the replies there ARE a lot of different times. My Doc / Bariatric Center said it was 15 and 30. They said for gastric bypass it was 30 and 30. I would just go with your doctors recommendation though. I would take it seriously though, because my nutritionist said it is the number 1 reason for re-weight gain after weight-loss surgery. Best of luck!

"my nutritionist said it is the number 1 reason for re-weight gain after weight-loss surgery." I would love to see some research to back this up.

    weight gain??

I was also banded on 5/18 and have gained around 4 pounds since surgery. Although it is very frustrating you have to hang in their. I had to do a 2 week preop diet and my dr assures me that since I am eating regularly that is why there is weight gain. I realize this is a slow process and it is hard to change years of bad habits. Hang in there, you can do it.
  24. I had Dr. Kurian when my 1st band was placed on oct 2007. I lost weight gained it back due to steriods. I didnt go bAck to her since 2012 . We found out there was a leak in my band so she put xray dye to see if it will stay since its more thick. I went back didnt work. I made another appt with dr. Kurian to talk about surgery n i wAited over 2 hrs n she said can the nurse practioner see u??? I gotta go get my hair done i am already a half hr late n her hair dresser doesnt like when she is late! I couldnt believe it! She ditched me to get her damn hair done!!!! So i ditched her and a dr i worl for referred me to Dr. Bradley Schwack. Boy did i wish he was in NYU before i let kurian touch me! Dr. Schwack just replaced my bAnd on march 1,2013. He told me he replaced my whole band cause nothing looked righg n dr. KuriAn plAced my band low n thAts probably a big reason why when my band wAs full before the leak i still felt hungry. He is great! He listens to u n answers all your questions and he doesnt try to rush u out of the room to see his next patient. I was so nervous when i was there on the operating table crying cause I was so nervous. N he wAs right there with me telling me everything will be alright. Another main reason about Dr. Kurian that i dont like is... My sis in law (my bros wife) had gastric bypass ln nov. 2007 and she passes away in march cuz they found her intestines were twisted. When I called Dr. KuriAn thAt my sis in law passed away i feel like she didnt really care... So that was the biggest reaSon as to why i was so nervous and crying when Dr. Schwack did it cause i was so upset what happened to my sis in law n i didnt wanna be the same. My niece and 2 nephews lost their mom at such a young age its just so terrible to me till this day.

    am off the rails again.

We've all been there, it happens to all of us. I'm a bit the same at the moment, I'd hate to admit what's gone down my cake hole in the last few days. I'm going for a fill on Thursday. I had the same thing, I didnt get REALLY tight but just a bit for comfort and I convinced myself that I needed a bit out. Which I did, got relief but the the whole last 12 months has been much more of a struggle to maintain, I've dealt with head hunger and appetite the whole time. I havent gained anything significant, thanks to running about 700 miles a day. But I'm probably a kg or two heavier than I was at this time last year and its better to act now! For me, the tightness was transient, in hindsight I should have waited it out because I'm back at the same level and can easily, and I mean easily, eat an entire sandwich. Which in and of itself is not so problematic, but the appetite that comes with it is. So I'm going to have a tiny fill. And then another if I need to. I've farted around way too long complaining about wanting to have lost just 10 more lb without actually using the band for what it is meant to be used for - well filled you can eat little enough to lose weight! I guess I just kind of feel I shouldnt need it this far down the track and that my doc is going to scold me for wanting to lose more weight. What more can you do? Just approach that good restriction cautiously and slowly and keep up a lot of exercise, which works wonders to preventing weight gain. I guess you ARE starting again in a sense but if you cant take the fast aggressive fills then no amount of trying to is going to work for you, you'll just end up unfilled again. Slow and steady wins the race. Oh, and did I mention exercise! Its your number one weapon in preventing regain.
