  1. Hi, I am a newbie here and this is my first post. I have been reading a lot of the posts here and researching VSG. I would like you all to give me some honest feedback on whether I am a suitable candidate for VSG. I feel that others I might ask have a strong bias one way or other --> The doctors are all for it as after all it is what they are selling. My family and friends are all against any kind of surgery .. seeing it as either weak will or me making a mountain out of a mole hill or worse commiting body mutiliation. You are all a group of strangers but you have walked in these shoes and been there.. I would be very grateful for your candid advice. So Am I a candidate for VSG 40 yr old female 5ft 2in Currently 194 lbs. Never been lower than 125 lbs. Life long issues with weight PCOS for 25 years with related issues (infertility, hair loss, dark skin in under arms and neck, hirsutism, cystic acne) Diagnosed as Diabetic 3 months ago (A1a of 6.3) High Cholesterol (Triglycerides - 215 / HDL - 3 /| Cholesterol to HDL ratio - 6.4) Most of the weight I carry is on the mid section. Family history of diabetes, High BP, and cardiac issues Have had 2 surgeries prior which resulted in some keloid scarring - C-section and breast reduction for medical reasons (nerve issues, back pain) Am considering VSG as I really really do not want to do a lapband and have that foreign object in me. I eat healthy at home with organic foods, whole grains, made from scratch stuff. But when I do eat out, it is harder. I do have a sweet tooth. Vegetarian --> Protein is going to be an issue. I eat dairy and eggs. I do have 100% coverage via my insurer. This should not influence my decision but I am reading it as medically supported proof. Exercise - I exercize at least 2-3 times a week. Last 6 months I have been working with a trainer on resistance training. I love to hike. I really really do not like to take pills. I am tired of being fat, too sick to do stuff, not finding nice clothes, not being able to keep up with my kid, avoiding photographs and generally feeling like I am going to be miserable till I die.

    Pre op diet?

My BMI was really high. I'm only 5'2"/5'3" and I was over 400lbs. I'm also a vegetarian do perhaps that played a part. My bloodwork was pretty good pre op. Other than encouraging me to increase my protein, no preop diet for me. I had a really easy surgical experience.

    Discouraged

I am mostly vegetarian --trying to be vegan. I feel bad drinking all Tia milk and whey products lately since the surgery. You can get Protein through vegetarian diets. Just make sure you make your soy Protein shakes and eat veg that contain most amount of Proteins. http://www.womenshealthmag.com/nutrition/high-protein-vegetables Good luck!
  4. Here's something I threw together that was approved for my weeks 4-6 after surgery that was pretty delish. I'm calling it "Bariatric Lasagna". 1/2 cup soft cooked macaroni 1/2 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup cottage cheese 1/4 no sugar added spaghetti sauce Mix all ingredients. top with some mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Microwave until warm and cheese is melted. Makes about 4 half cup servings. I guess if you aren't vegetarian you could add some hamburger if you are allowed it.

    Some Questions From A Newbie

Mr_worm I've considered that but think going with chicken years after being vegetarian would be a bad thing!
  6. Thank you folks for your responses. In an effort to go vegetarian a bit, I significantly reduced the meat from my diet and perhaps that was the mistake. jilani

    Vegetarian Menu

I just stuck to soups and protein shakes during that time, since I'm vegetarian, too. I found it easier than trying to concoct something

    My Bad Habits Are....

Bad habits: I do not exercise. I drink 2 iced coffees with real Hershey's syrup (only a tablespoon or so) on a typical day. I don't eat breakfast--never could handle it. I do eat a few almonds around 10 or so. I eat WAY too fast. I don't eat and never have been able to eat the recommended amount of protein; my blood work shows that everything's okay, though, so I'm not worried about it--and I feel good. Good habits: I do not eat baked products, flour, Pasta, fried foods, or sweets (other than the chocolate syrup in my coffee); sleeve doesn't tolerate them very well. I do not eat fatty Protein foods and have almost become a lacto-vegetarian (again, not on purpose--sleeve just doesn't tolerate them well). I routinely take Vitamins and supplements for the first time in my life. I stay well hydrated. I weigh every couple of days to make sure things are still okay.

    Hot Dogs?

Soft foods are 3 weeks away for me (can't wait - hell, I can't wait for puréed foods next week), but I'm vegetarian (no eggs) so my protein options are sadly limited. But I'm pretty good at jazzing up tofu a million ways for my vegan husband and me, so will need to stick to that largely. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    1000 cal/day 2 weeks out

This is how I’ve been taught to eat as well, so I feel conflicted about my Nutritionists recommendations. I eat meat now but was a vegetarian for 8 years so I have a taste for plant proteins and don’t feel good eating meat meat meat. I’ll do what it takes though.

    lap band cookbook

That would be wonderful! I don't think a nutritionist would need to oversee it, necessarily, as long as we made sure that all the submissions were either healthy or band-friendly (and maybe labeled the recipes that aren't really "every day" meals). Maybe have a few different sections, like one for tofu/vegetarian meals, one for red meat, one for chicken/turkey, one for fish, etc?

    day 4

Im 5 days post op. Today I has some blended vegetarian chili thinned with tomatoe juice and run through the bullet. I only had a 1/2 cup and ate it VERY slowly! I didnt have any negative reaction either! Friday night (me and the Mr eat out EVERY Friday night, its our night) was the first Friday since surgery. He got a 1.2 roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and veggies. I could have eaten those potatoes!!!! But I got a chicken noodle soup and drained out all of the veg, noddles and chicken. The broth was so warm and salty!!! It sure hit the spot. I am not a huge protien fan and getting my intake has been really difficult. I was sick of the sweet and creamy protien shakes by day 2. The yogurt was even too sweet. So granted, the broth wasnt a great choice for protien but I needed the break! I also blended a condensed split pea soup mixed with soy milk and had a 1.2 cup at a time this morning for breakfast! 2Tbsp of skim milk powder upped the protien. For salty and savoury over sweet folks, it is tough!

    Favorite restaurant meals post WLS?

I usually get a naked turkey/or vegetarian burger (burger wrapped in lettuce instead of bread) or just tea and coffee when everything is too crazy. Ask for calorie info if it's not provided, that should help guide your decisions

    @@ElyQuint - Are you Ovo-lacto Vegetarian or a pescatarian?
  17. I take: One-a-Day Gummies (2 per serving) sours. Citracel petites for calcium and some D An extra D capsule (because I'm allergic to the sun) - I also have sublinguals if I'm feeling too tight to take a capsule Biotin sublingual B12 sublingual CoQ10 sublingual Omega 3 and 6 Iron every 3-4 days I'll start taking my Magnesium and zinc when I feel comfortable with the pill size. Acidophilus (the good stuff in yogurt) because pill form is used better by the body than from yogurt (and I don't eat yogurt) One of my specialist Drs (unrelated to WLS) suggested I stop extra C (causes kidney stones) and E (increases the probability to have a stroke) and as a vegetarian it would be unlikely I'd ever run low on either of those.
  18. I'm a vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for the past 15 years. I am fortunate enough to have a nutritionist who is willing to work with me to develop an eating plan that works for me. I also have the added challenges of multiple food allergies. I try to eat as unprocessed as possible since I am hypersensitive to overly processed foods. I prefer organic, whole foods. No artificial sugars or dyes since they tend to trigger my allergies. It is challenging. I find it is necessary to constantly read labels. If necessary I will write a company for clarification.

    skim vs 1%

Well and that isn't a bad thing. There are a number of nutritionists and scientists that have found that Dairy really isn't all that good for you any way. Its bad fat for the most part of has to be balanced out with base (non acidic) fruits and vegetables to keep it from affecting you in some negative ways. This is from both vegetarian, vegan and meat based perspectives equally.

    Any vegetarian breakfast ideas?

Hi! I am 6 months post sleeve. I have been having protein shakes for breakfast since I was sleeved, but my dr isn't a fan of shakes and wants me to try to eat real food. He also believes in low carb and no white stuff. I get sick of eggs quickly. And while my sleeve and I are getting along fairly well she gets a little testy in the morning so I can't eat anything too heavy. Also my dr doesn't want me to eat anything mushy like oatmeal or yogurt. Anyone have any ideas? I am nut-less because the one I had was useless. Thanks.
  22. Sounds like we are in a similar boat!!! Except...I know my PCP will not want to give me the okay! He believes that everyone can lose weight by just becoming a vegetarian!!! I'm pretty sure he will NOT want to give me clearance for WLS,luckily I don't believe my insurance requires PCP approval, only medical clearance. My PCP is in the same network as the surgeon I want to use for surgery so my surgeon can already see all my medical records because it's all one record. I have an appointment to meet my surgeon for the 1st time first of August and (routine followup) at the end of August with my PCP so please update this post on how things go with your PCP!! I may need some tips on how to get around a uncooperative PCP!!! Good Luck!
  23. I don't know how it affects him but I was a vegetarian for 2 years and he was miserable. I ruined his life in his words. I ask him all the time and he never has an answer that makes sense. I am going to do this because I can't win no matter what I do. A simple diet throws him off.

    Buyers remorse anyone?

I guess I'm going to be Debbie Downer because I do regret having this surgery. I'm a month and 1 week out and I am miserable. My experience though is not ideal so that could be the problem too. First, I've never had self-esteem issues regarding my weight, had no comorbidities, etc. I did this because after having my twins years ago, no matter what I did to lose the weight it didn't work. This surgery was to be a tool to help me lose weight and prevent me from ending up with weight related issues down the line. My PCP didn't want me to have the surgery so it took 2 years to get her to even write the referral because she said there had to be *something* that would fix this issue with my weight. I mean when I say I tried everything I went low cal, low carb, glutten-free, vegetarian, you name it. Finally she wrote the referral and thus began my (supposed to be 6 months) year of getting qualified. It took a year because of paperwork nightmares with Kaiser and the surgeons in my area being months behind due to long waiting lists. During the pre-op year I stuck to everything and followed all the rules. Lost great weight during the pre-op year. When my date of surgery came I was excited, nervous, etc. Then I hit complications during and after surgery. As a result I was out of work for a month, could not keep anything (including water) down. Became lactose intolerant (normal for many with sleeve) and now cannot eat/drink most anything. Right now at over a month out all I can keep down is mashed potatoes (about 2 tbsp), grits, shrimp, and scallops. All other foods make me either throw up or cramp badly. I am finally able to drink Water and not throw up (only with MiO). I'm absolutely miserable and what's worse, I don't miss the food, I miss having any energy. I used to walk at least a mile (most days more) every single day. Plus, I experienced hunger starting at 1 week. Yes, those who say hunger is not real after the sleeve, well, maybe not for them but I'm constantly hungry. I am tired of the few foods I can eat, tired of water (and I used to love water), and to top it all off...I've lost only 11 lbs. post-op. I miss my engery (and yes even with all the Vitamins I'm taking) and more than anything I miss being able to play with my kids and puppy. Not to mention the amount of extra work it puts on my very patient, supportive, and loving hubby is horrible. I am one of the ones that would gladly accept back those 11 lbs. in a minute.
