    Vegetarians & Gastric Sleeve

I don't. It's would be nearly impossible on a vegetarian diet when most plant based sources of protein also tend to have carbs. My carbs run a little on the high side but most days I keep it between 50 - 60 carbs/100gms protein/900 -1,000 calories a day.

    Forks over Knives

I am 3 weeks post open and have been a vegetarian for over two years. I did try being a vegan (no animal products at all) and ethically I identify more with vegans, but I just found that for me, personally, I do better with dairy in my diet. I know post surgery vegans exist, but I imagine it came with some challenges. To get my protein post surgery, I rely on beans, soy based products including tofu and faux meats (gardein and Quorn brands being my fave) as well as eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk. Once I am further long and have a better handle on eating, I will transition back to unsweetened original almond milk for use in cooking and in beverages. I am also going to try a tofu and spinach scramble instead of egg scramble. I had an organic frozen entree of this made by Annie brand and ioved it! Was expensive for my budget, though. Try using textured vegetable protein TVP or gardein's meatless ground "beef" in beef recipes (chili, texmex) or Quorn faux chicken. I have added that chicken to soup,.pasta, as the main focus, or under a lemon butter sauce and goat cheese with sundries tomatoes (aka chicken Bryan). I want to explore cooking tofu better, though. Seems to be better when others make it but I haven't given up, yet! (Ps, soft tofu can be used as a base for fruit smoothies or freeze mixture and eat as frozen treat. I really liked both!)
  3. I have been a vegetarian for over two years for ethical and health reasons. I recently had the roux n y done so most of my thoughts and advice are from pre surgery, keep that in mind. That being said, it is entirely possible and not difficult to be a vegetarian! Before or after surgery! Protein staples post surgery will be eggs, dairy in general, beans, tofu/soy products, including faux meat like my favorite, gardein's meatless ground "beef". I love black beans and chickpeas, lentils, peas.....Bob's Red Mill makes a veg soup mix that I add additional beans, corn, tomatoes, etc to with some veggie broth. Moroccan Chickpea soup is a fave, too. I also love cheese and dairy so I make quiches , add cheese to up flavor and protein, as well as use plain greek yogurt as a topping replacement for sour cream. Experiment with veggies and recipes you can find online, especially through allrecipes.com. tofu can be substituted for any meat, though there are premade tofu dishes that you may want to try first. Also, once onto regular foods diet, Tempeh is great to make veggie reubans. Yum! Oh and Quorn makes excellent faux chicken. Highly recommend! I find this stuff I. My grocer's organic aisle, Wal-Mart doesn't carry this stuff yet to my knowledge. Commit for a week, preplan and pre make your dishes because healthy vegetarian done right requires some cooking and planning. Then go for two weeks. If you are craving tuna or some other meat, indulge and then go back to no meat products. I still will eat a burger every now and again, and then I move on. I have felt so much better since becoming a vegetarian. My food tastes better, I can isolate the individual flavors without the heaviness of meat drowning it out. Also, season I.g is a big key component to making veggies and food more than just ordinary. It became a lot of fun for me to try new stuff and introduce my family to it! If you are interested in any recipes I utilize, please let me know. I don't like anything too complicated or time consuming. Sorry I kind of jumped around, I get so excited when other ppl take interest in bettering themselves and the world through their forks. OH...YOU MUST WATCH "Forks Over Knives". Must. I saw it on Netflix. It is a great documentary, will change how you look at health and food and history.

    Vegetarians & Gastric Sleeve

As a vegetarian how is your weight loss going I'm worried mine will be slower. I've been vegetarian since I was 13 and gained so much cause I became a carb junkie.

    Vegetarians & Gastric Sleeve

I'm seven months post op and have been vegetarian for 20+ years. I still have one protein shake most days and am trying to get more adventurous with other veggie protein sources. It's totally doable, but I do have to be more conscious of carbs than meat eaters seem to since I can't just have a piece of chicken or fish for dinner. Talk to your nut - mine modified the preop diet for me and gave me some info on veggie protein that wasn't in our manual. If you eat eggs, as I do, it'll be easy to get in some good (and cheap!) protein.
  6. Like others are saying, you need to speak with your doctor since they are all different. My doctor requires a liquid diet one week pre-op because it helps to shrink the liver. I work with a woman who had sleeve and her doctor didn't require any pre-op diet at all. So, I don't think there is a right and wrong, just a preference per doctor. Deep breaths and remember, diet is not an exact science. Everybody is different and every doctor has his/her own preferences. But it helps to take slow, deep breaths and try to remain relaxed. Stress doesn't help anything. You'll do fine without Protein for a short time. Vegetarians do it. You can too. Slow...deep...breaths.
  7. OP was looking for vegetarian or vegan options.... so not sure why people listed fish, crab, clams, and ham as suggestions! There's a lot of plant based proteins: Beans (including green beans, snap peas too), Nuts, Lentils, Brown Rice, Whole Wheat Pasta, Quinoa, Seitan, Soy. And don't forget darker green veggies: 1 cup of broccoli or spinach contains 5-6 grams of Protein (same amount as 1 egg). Also try chick peas and whole grains. Some vegetarian sources are cheese, milk, anything dairy really. For protein powders, I like anything in the Vega line (vegan) and pre-made shakes, I like the Komplete (vegan) and the Cocotein fruit punch (vegetarian). I hope this helps!
  8. Any vegetarians out there that have already been sleeved? Being able to eat right as a veggie post op is one on my main concerns. Advice???
  9. How do others do with being vegetarian when getting the gastric sleeve surgery? Any other forums or places to get advice out there?
  10. Hey now everyone, let's uh chillax, I changed my name to kind of take a break ya know? But good golly y'all are just a little bit excited and uptight, taking things way out of context, getting the pitchforks out, calling on mods to step in, it's like a bunch of kids on the playground. The sad thing is, I really do eat crap. They call it 'skinny fat'. Everyone talks on these boards about how good they are and the one time they cheated- felt horrible! It's exhausting seeing the same angelic posts all the time, and I am just sitting here literally fighting with myself to NOT eat the huge candy bar in the kitchen, and yet it will be gone bite by little bite. It's food addiction. As mentioned in some posts about my 'vegetarianism', and my Arby's remark, I actually do eat and enjoy those beef and cheddar jr's, though I haven't had one in a while, at the same time- I am really conflicted with the outright torture of animals - I really struggle with the meat part- especially the pigs, but they are tasty and I will eat something with 'accidental' bacon, but I try to avoid it. Not decided yet if I care what happens to chickens, they are dumb animals. It's complex people, could we have more vegetarian fast food places?! Americans don't need that much freakin torture animal meat in their diets, I struggle with the fact it's in everywhere. And as far as everyone wanting to pounce and gang up on people, it's a bit overdone. Elode's comments kind of set me off into an immature rant. Do we need to be policing other people all the time?! People love Donald Trump because he speaks his mind and his kind of a jerk, it refreshing. I don't agree about anything he says, but dang it's nice to hear some candid talk. We have gone too far the other way in shaming people out of free speech. It wasn't taken away from us, we did it to ourselves. As far as the cursing, I am sorry. I like to be candid, speak my mind, and rant off on tangents (usually ambien-laden- hence the spelling errors). Sorry, I know it's a little trashy and ghetto. At the very least, at least I gave some people some entertainment value.
  11. Check out people like Rich Roll. There are others who eat vegetarian. Hindus & Indians do. All don't have a problem with protein. They have a bigger issue with B12 than anything else.
  12. I occasionally do days where I eat vegetarian and still meet my protein goals pretty readily. But does the title of your post mean that cheese is the only dairy you will eat? That might be tough -- cheese doesn't have as much protein per serving as other dairy (except maybe cottage cheese). If you are open to eating yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt and drinking milk, you'll likely do fine. There are some specialized brands of milk like Fair Life and CarbMaster that take out sugar and add in additional whey that work really well for post-wls people. Whey protein powder is another good dairy option to keep your protein high and your carbs low. Good luck!
  13. I deeply want to do this...I was for two years and got sick as I didn't know what I was doing. I need any help and info as I can. I had a sleeve done last October. I try to keep my carbs done also...any info woud be so greatly apprecuated!!!! Thank you
  14. I'm almost 3 months out and I spent yesterday from noon until 9:30 in the evening with "the foamies" and throwing up. It was actually a little scary, although I didn't have pain. I didn't eat anything new - vegetarian chili and a little bit of chicken breast. I drank from a straw in the morning, but I've used straws since surgery. I have no idea what caused this episode, but I still have them quite often. It seems like one day I'm fine eating something and the next time I have it, I get sick. I'm glad I read the previous post about making today a liquid/soft day. I never want a repeat of yesterday!

    June 24th Peeps chime in!

I'm doing okay. Heartburn is a big issue, which surprises me since I never had it outside of pregnancy preop. I just switched to Nexium and it seems to be helping more than the Prilosec was. Still having some solid food struggles. I'm starting to feel like my surgeon is pushing the solids and 4oz quantities too fast. Cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese strings, re fried beans are all well tolerated. Meat (chicken, fish, pork, deli meat) are not. I haven't even tried beef yet and don't think I will anytime soon. So...I guess I'm sort of vegetarian these days?!

    Vomiting postop

Thanks, I think I'm just going to stay on my mushy foods longer and avoid meat for now. Fortunately dairy agrees with me, and I actually like my premier protein shakes so I can be vegetarian as long I still get to eat cheese and yogurt ????

    Vomiting postop

@@rnsamantha I was doing that quit a bit, I went practically vegetarian for awhile but drank my protein shakes to keep protein count high. Meat is hit or miss with me too. I think chicken is the worst, and I'm a notorious fast eater, doomed! I'm not really sure what you could do since I'm In the same boat but do vegetarian for awhile....

What to stock fridge up with?!?!

@@Nikki Monroe@@Nickkibear24 - Best of luck to both of you with your upcoming surgeries! I am a little over 3 months out and remember all too well that I overbought in preparation. I second @@10nsStar's suggestion on not gettting too much beforehand as taste can change and I've read that from many on this site. Mine sure did and I wasted some product. I am also a vegetarian so I won't be listing meats. That being said, for Clear liquids I had several different things to flavor Water (flavor drops, crystal light, flavored herbal teas, lemons etc) and since I like them cold, more ice trays. Also for clear stage you can have broths, which can feel really healing on the tummy (and if you are motivated can add unflavored Protein powder - I used unjury which I think is only online). Of course there is sugar free popscicles, Jello etc. I also drank G2 which is diet gatorade Full liquids - all of the above and: soups - strain if need be Protein shakes (I like premade better like premeir but also made some nectar ones when I wanted fruit - fuzzy navel is good) milk (high protein ones like fairlife) Puree/soft foods - you can puree most anything but I didn't and stuck to soft foods: yougurt - esp greek scrambled eggs ricotta cheese bake (from world according to eggface - a good resource) cottage cheese Beans sugar free pudding oatmeal - I added Protein Powder There are some good recipes on the internet - I mentioned the World According to Eggface, which is a great one. Congratulations and good luck!

What to stock fridge up with?!?!

For the liquid phase I used pre-made shakes like GNC Lean and Muscle Milk Light. I also kept greek yogurt close by. Honestly, I had no interest in anything those first few weeks after surgery. I sipped my beverages and tasted a little pureed turkey on Thanksgiving and that was it. I never actually pureed anything. I made food that was soft and mashed it up really good. Vegetarian chili was one of my favorites and had a decent amount of Protein. I rarely ever use the pre-made shakes anymore. I do make my own with 8 oz milk, 5oz tub of cannon light and fit yogurt, and a handful of berries which makes a great shake. Good luck to all with their surgeries!

    What's for Breakfast?!

My most recent breakfasts have been this... On Sunday's I cook up a batch of veggie bacon or sausage patties (I'm vegetarian), and boil a pot of eggs. Then on weekdays for work I grab an egg and either the bacon or sausage patty, and take to work and eat at my desk. Before I was on this kick, I was eating a Greek yogurt with walnuts or almonds mixed in, or a Protein shake most mornings.
  21. My nutritionist is great. I had a lot of dietary issues to tackle. I'm a vegetarian and I have multiple food allergies. That means I can't eat artificial sugars, stevia, and food dyes to name just a few. Crafting an eating plan was challenging. Our sessions had to be very conversational as I needed to ask a lot of questions to figure out what I could safely eat. I also like that my program utilizes a patient email portal. When I needed to increase my calories or share info and it was not time for a follow up appointment I could shot an email and get a response either by email or a phone call within 2 days. The fact that I have no had an ER visit or hospitalization because of my allergies since surgery has a lot to do with how helpful my nutritionist has been.

    Hamburgers are gross

I guess I am the opposite. I would have really never eaten a burger before surgery. I was pretty close to vegetarian. I just really did not eat alot of meat. Well that changed. I still eat alot of veggie meat products like morning star chicken patties and sausage patties. My new fave meal is a turkey burger with cheese wrapped in lettuce with mustard, tomato and a little pickle relish. So good!!

    MILK

That's why we're preaching Fairlife! It's ultra-filtered to remove sugars and lactose, and it packs 14g of protein and 1/3 of daily Calcium in ONE cup. For me, someone who can be sensitive to higher amounts of lactose, it's a godsend. Almond milk had more carbs and less protein for me. How you manage to find so much success as vegan is AMAZING. It's hard enough as a carnivore trying to cobble a decent diet together! Thanks but I'm vegetarian. It makes things easier because I do eat milk based products like yogurt and I also eat eggs. Those 2 items make it relatively easy for me. I hope to go vegan once I get to a normal BMI. I'm currently following a few vegan athletes for when I transition. I also have to eat as unprocessed as possible, because heavily processed foods trigger my allergies.
  24. Although it may be "normal" to go every 2-3 days ( I do) it is more ideal to go every day. If I could get to that point I would be happy! I'm currently working on it by trying to implement more Fiber into my diet. I believe @@BLERDgirl has the right idea. She's also a vegetarian, so her diet is more ideal for the digestive system. Oh, and for the OP and anyone else who struggles to go, I have 2 words for you: Squatty Potty. Look it up, then go buy one. You'll thank me.

    Hamburgers are gross

90% vegetarian? yes I felt like a scmuck on the vegetarian part, I should go all the way- but I still like chicken. I just can't justify buying hamburgers when most of it gets thrown away, at least the animal should die making me happy
