Which do you prefer post-surgery? I'm still pre surgery going in on May 10. I've been test driving some different Protein powders and while I don't want to overly stock up in case my tastes change I know I need to have something on hand. I tried unjury today in some chicken broth and found it to be totally fine. It made the broth a little creamy tasting which took some getting used to but I definitely didn't find it to be offensive. However, there was a lot of powder to stir into my two cups of broth (I was using a pre measured packet). The GENEPRO is appealing because of the smaller quantity and the high amount of protein. If you've tried both can you tell me how they compare in terms of taste?

Unflavored Protein Powder and flavored clear protein drink
Clementine Sky replied to Red23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If there's a Sprouts near you they have an unflavored whey isolate Protein powder that dissolves very well into both hot and cold liquids, and is odorless and tasteless. The drawback is that it doesn't have as much protein as other powders do, with just 9 grams. It only has 40 calories, zero fat, and zero carbs. The perk of it is that you can buy it by the weight and try it out before deciding to make a larger purchase. I started off with a bag that just cost $2.85. I've also liked GENEPRO. I'm a bit dubious about the claims, but I will say that I only had positive experiences with the product. It mixed into everything smoothly, and was undetectable. I don't know if it was a matter of causation or correlation but my hair loss really slowed down and I felt more energetic while using it. I just added it to my morning coffee (which my doctor approves of; I know some surgeons are against caffeine) rather than using it as a meal substitute, though. With both of the unflavored powders you can add them to something like Crystal Light. Gatorade Light is relatively low in calories and carbs and Protein Powder could be mixed into it, though I would only have that as a post-workout drink or something rather than a staple drink. I really liked the fruit flavored Isopure drinks before surgery, but was repulsed by them afterwards. Anything overly sweet wasn't palatable to me until about 5 months post surgery. They did remind me of Gatorade. I didn't care for Isopure or Unjury's unflavored protein powders, but many do like them. Syntrax has a lot of fruit-flavored protein powders. Vitamin Shoppe often has them available in sample packs, so you can try them out before committing to one of the big, pantry-space hogging containers. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/b/syntrax/N-9bk# -
Depressed & Can't meet H20/Protein goals
doppelganger replied to fullyalive's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 5 wks post op and still struggle with hydration and Protein. Now that I can have soft foods it is easier, but I still don't hit my goal. Isopure, Premier, Unjury powder even broth, made and still do make me nauseous to even think about them. Carnation Instant is tolerable in chocolate, but barely. I did buy some GENEPRO and it works to an extent, but don't believe the hype that there is no taste, BS! I can mix one scoop (30gms of protein) with 1.5oz of cream of wheat or oatmeal and it is doable. I found my Holy Grail about week 2 when my husband brought home a cup of Sonic ice, I chewed on that all day and it was so easy. My freezer has a bag of Sonic ice at all times and all of my drinks have to be ice cold, the least bit warm and I get nauseous. I have frozen Crystal Light drinks as well but they burn the back of my throat so I have stopped those as well. Week two I was where you are, but I wasn't crying, I was furious and cussing like a lunatic. No one tells you that hydration is the most important, all of my manuals say "at least 50gms of protein and at least 48oz of clear liquid", no options just scare tactics. It is physically impossible for you to get all of that in when your tiny new stomach is so swollen. I understand the importance of protein and hydration, but they need to give you some more realistic guidelines for the first few weeks. It seems some people do it and are able to get all of that in, but in my case, I could not and still struggle. -

Opinions in Genepro protein powder?
auntiem0502 replied to Thinkingthinner1109's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Love Genepro! It is medical grade protein. Although it has special instructions so it will dissolve, the serving of 30grams of protein in a tablespoon can't be beat. You can half it to make it last longer. I mix with yogurt, tea, coffee, oatmeal, diet hot chocolate, yams.. I have not tried to mix with cold liquids since with warm you have to make sure to pour over the powder or it just floats to the top and doesn't dissolve. Best price on Amazon $32-$37. I also have Premier shakes from Costco for a quicker option. -
Opinions in Genepro protein powder?
Tiredofsitting replied to Thinkingthinner1109's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used Premier shakes before my sleeve surgery but could not tolerate the sweetness post surgery so I began using GENEPRO...it saved me and almost 6 months out I use it in my Crystal Light as my workout drink for some extra kick......had my first post op bloodwork and everything was perfect. Love my Genepro, I don't see myself without in the near future. -
I think I've posted about this topic a couple of times hahaha I get premier Protein shakes and mix them into my coffee I've also started mixing unflavored protein into my coffee along with half a shake 5.5 oz Premier Protein + 1 tbsp GENEPRO protein = 45g protein! I mix the two Proteins with some milk or creamer and and then add my coffee while stirring so the hot coffee doesn't clump up the protein there will be people here that will tell you that genepro protein isn't real protein, but I talked to my doctor and they said that it's fine. I'm a scientist myself, and I went on their website, and read some literature, and their protein extraction process makes sense to me. The genepro dissolves very easily, so I like it! I also try to eat around 20-30g more protein than my minimum so that even if I misjudge the amount of protein in something I eat or drink, I'll still be getting what I need. another option is unjury protein which people seem to like.

This is a bit of a vent and a lot of questions... I'm concerned I'm not eating enough. I'm 3 weeks out and on soft foods. I've just recently had my surgeon change my acid pills because I was having terrible heartburn that inflamed my sleeve. I'm a bit better now, but I don't think I'm eating enough, and I'm not sure I'm doing this right. Yesterday, I measured out 1/3 cup of cottage cheese with some crushed up pears for Breakfast. I try to eat only about 1 tsp a minute or so, but each one makes my sleeve contract in pain. By 5 tsp or so, I'm full and tired of the pain so I stop. I can't drink my Protein shakes because they are just too sweet. I'm going to try my GENEPRO unflavored in a bit of chocolate milk today. Anyway, I ate 3 ounces of refried Beans for lunch which took me 15 minutes or so because of the pain, and then dinner I had 1/2 cup of roast beef hash which went down nicely but was way too much by the end. I even tried to eat a pudding with genepro in it to get my protein in but I'm too full and uncomfortable after half of the snack pack. I totaled 545 calories yesterday and 50g of protein which I know is not enough. Should I just eat way slower and keep trying to get this food in, or is it ok to be this low? I'm having such a hard time telling "full" from the pain because every bite of food that isn't liquid makes my sleeve contract in pain, and it does this the whole time I eat. I don't really know when to stop because I know I can't be full from one small bite, so when am I supposed to stop?? I'm feeling so confused and discouraged. I'm losing weight, but I am not eating enough to have any energy, and I've been feeling terrible the last few days. I'm supposed to walk 2 miles a day, but how can I do that when I'm barely eating anything??

Thanks I'll try genepro

Had my surgery 3/29 as well. My surgeon has me on clear liquids for 10 days, full liquids would start tomorrow [Fri 7th] but I started today. I had to have something else. I woke up this morning and was just dragging my feet, like it actually took effort for me to pick my feet up as I walked instead of shuffle around. Full liquids is 10 days, soft/blended is minimum of 10 days and once I tolerate everything well in that phase then I can move on to the next. I haven't had any problems getting liquids down. Even managed about 100 oz on two separate days [no joke]. I tried an Atkin's shake today w/ 1/2 tablespoon Genepro added to up the protein from 15g to 30g and it went down smooth... and stayed there. I will say I can only have 2 oz of the protein shake before I'm done, I may even decrease it to one ounce because I get full. So I've definitely had a harder time getting my water in with the protein shake today. I plan on putting myself on a schedule to help. I'll see how it goes.

Why is everything sweet?
ridgerunner replied to doppelganger's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After a lot of Googling this subject I found a product called GENEPRO. It takes half the amount that you need of other products for the same quantity of Protein because they put it thru a process that takes all the excess unnecessay byproducts out. It also mixes easier because of this and as far as taste, I myself barely taste it. I have mixed it in cold and hot drinks and foods and it mixes very easily. I am very impressed with this product. Sent from my LG-E980 using the BariatricPal App I looked this up and consulted my surgeons office and they have signed off on Genepro and recommend it. Unfortunately, it is not listed in any of the materials we were given as an option!! Also, I did force down a Priemere Protein shake yesterday which left me bloated and feeling crappy. During the same phone call asking about Genepro I mentioned this and was told if protein were on a grading scale of A-F my Dr's office looks at Priemere as a 'D'... Why in the hell not mention that? It's like they get an unjury kickback. Everything I've read is as above, barely able to taste it and the same protein content using half the product. I ordered mine from Amazon and it should get here tomorrow. In the meantime I was told JRobb and nectar are good alternatives and single packets are available at The Vitamin Shoppe. Thanks to everyone for their help it is so appreciated. I'm glad I could help you with finding something that works for you. You will find plenty of naysayers that want to tell you it is probably bogus but if your surgeon approves it you should feel comfortable using it as directed and not doubling up like others may suggest. There have been plenty of people who have been using it as directed and their numbers are coming back just fine. I have not read anything about the opposite being true. Not to mention the waste of money that would be. Your bloodwork should dictate if it works or not. Good luck! Sent from my LG-E980 using the BariatricPal App -
Why is everything sweet?
JamieLogical replied to doppelganger's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would be cautious about counting 15 grams of Genepro as 30 grams of protein. The science is still out on it, so to speak. No independent studies have verified those claims. I would still only count it as 15 grams until there is more evidence available. Getting the benefits of the extra protein won't hurt you if their claims are true. But thinking you are meeting your protein goals and really only getting half as much as you need really could cost you down the line. So my advice would be to still count a serving as 15 grams for the purposes of meeting your daily goal and if you come out ahead, all the better. -

Unflavored Isopure protein powder
Kindle replied to AmyMarie79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As far as I'm concerned Genepro isn't really Protein. There are absolutely no third party studies or analyses that support the manufacturer's claims. There are no unbiased studies that indicate pre and post protein serum levels that would quantify the absorption rate and efficiency. The company can't even provide an analysis of individual amino acids to indicate whether it is a complete protein or not. Anyone with more than a couple semesters of biochemistry would know there is no scientific credibility to their claims. Basically they start out with whey protein, but the molecule is then so altered, it is really no longer a protein molecule. They play around a lot with the hydrogen molecules. It doesn't take much to change what something is when you start adding and removing molecules. For example, the oxygen we breath is made of 2 oxygen molecules. Remove one of them, add two hydrogen molecules and you have Water. Add one more hydrogen and you have hydrogen peroxide. Oxygen, water and hydrogen peroxide are not interchangeable even though they differ by just 1-2 molecules. Imagine what happens to protein when you strip away most of the hydrogen molecules. Now let's look at the other products this company sells.....all fad "miracle" supplements that claim to boost libido, burn fat, build muscle, enhance male performance, etc...kind of hard to take them seriously. You're better off sticking with "real" protein supplements with decades of scientific proof that they are providing proper nutrition. 100% whey protein is the best absorbed form of protein available. And there are hundreds of studies that prove this, not just one company's quack marketing ploys. -
2 week pre-op diet with Unjury or genepro
Andi07 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys. So I get migraines from stevia, truvia, aspartame, Splenda (sucralose) etc. I can't do the usual Protein prowders or shakes since the majority contain those sugars. I'm going to try GENEPRO (3 tbsp per my nurse) and unflavored unjury for the next 2 weeks. I'm thinking of doing genepro/Unjury shakes/smoothies (with low fat Greek yogurt), slushies, broth (flavored with ms. Dash) or flavored broth. Any other ideas on how to switch it up? Thanks in advance! -

Try some protein bars and try to find a turkey leg or something in the park! But you could also stop at the vitamin shop and pick up any of the yummy snacks packed with protein. Lenny and Larry's cookies with 16 g of protein, protein chips, protein gummies, veggies, Apple and peanut butter... Or bring an apple sauce and add a scoop of genepro protein to it. -

I use GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder from Anazon. No flavor at all. It is a very fine powder and usually dissolves well. I put in lots of things. Last night I had SF pudding made with nonfat milk and added the powder to the already set pudding. It didn't blend in all the way but the lumps were just chocolatey bumps like old fashioned cooked pudding could get. No biggie. I use it in my bottled Water with Mio drops. Soup, mashed veggies, spaghetti sauce. I whip it into my raw egg for an omelet. 30g Protein 98 cal a one tablespoon serving. My saving grace for getting my protein numbers up. Best Wishes!
