  1. Good luck! I started my pre-op diet on 6/6, the doctor then moved my DS op up to 6/11. 427lbs, down to 400, then gained 14 in the hospital. Now 6/29 and down to 377. Definitely seems like it was worth it to this point.

    Illinois medicaid question

So I have Illinois medicaid and am in the process of my 6 month physician supervised diet. I don't feel like my doctor is documenting my attempts at weight loss very well. She more or less writes weight loss of how ever much and then continue exercise and portion control. That's it. Will Illinois still approve me with this type of documentation?

    Surgery Day and Week 1

I was scheduled for 10:00 A.M. surgery but got there at 8 A.M. as requested. My doctor was ahead of schedule so I was immediately called in to get prepped, I.V. etc. I wasn't too nervous once the IV was in place. I detest IV insertions. :faint: More worried about that than the actual surgery. I have had numerous surgeries since 9 months of age. I was told by anesthesiologist that he would give me something to relax me and the next thing I know I'm being wheeled to my hospital room. I saw my husband waiting there and was very happy. I stayed one night. My sister gave me a bear that said BELIEVE on his paws and on the ribbon around his neck. I keep him close to remind me to believe in myself. I can do this. Shortly after returning from surgery my husband and I called family members to let them know all went well. I was very eager to walk because I heard about the pain from C02 gas used to inflate stomach for lap. surgery. I wasn't going to have any of that pain if I could prevent it. The walking worked, no shoulder/chest pain. Just soreness from surgical site. I tried to drink lots of water but guess I overdid it and started to get nauseated. Almost vomited but eventually only burped. :help: That's what I get for talking on the phone and drinking water. :hungry: Clear liquid diet of broth, SF Jello, SF popsicle. WATER!! Hardly slept because other patient in my room came in and she was in pain from her surgery (not lap-band). Nurses in and out constantly. I took naps the next morning. I was out. Then my doctor came to see me and I woke up. A woman from church came and gave me communion and I totally forgot I wasn't supposed to have solids. So after a few minutes I was relieved that I did'nt have any problems. I guess I didn't think of receiving communion as eating. Day 3,4 & 5 I was extremely hungry. I was back on pre-op diet of protien drinks, 3/day. They had kept me pretty full during pre-op but post op I was so hungry, it hurt. I even took Tums to try and stop the hunger pangs. I just keep telling myself it will be worth it. This is temporary. That thought gets me through the day. I actually went up a little immediately post op probably due to water retention. I'm starting to lose weight once again. Hooray!:clap2: My sister and family members said "I thought you weren't supposed to get hungry with Lap-band.'' I explained again about the fills and that I won't be getting first fill for 4 weeks. I think everyone is starting to understand how this will work. They keep forgetting I'm not supposed to eat solid food so they'll ask if I want a burger or a peach. I gotta love them though because I know they mean well. So this doesn't bother me one bit. This has been a big change for them as well.:scared::hug:

    I gained 2 pounds . . .

i usually gain 2 pounds as well, when i am on those days of the month.....it is usually one week before my period, i feel bloated and i have learned not to use the scale during those days. then it's all back to normal, another 3 weeks of normal weight.

    Self Esteem And The Gym

I had the same problem for a long time, and I had friends willing to go with me as well. I go to the gym at my school and I found a pretty good time to do it. I go before I have class, around 10am-12pm, and that's when all the older people go. Get to around 3-4pm and that's when all the athletes are around. I'm not sure how big your town is or how many gyms it has, but it might be good to scope out some before you join one. Or, if you're still self-conscious, you could exercise at home until you feel more comfortable. It wouldn't cost much to get a few weights and bands.

    First period

I get the same way before my period, and for a couple days into it. I usually gain a couple of pounds with it as well, however it comes right off after the period is over...and when I was still in the losing phase I would usually lose the most weight right after my Tom. Good luck!

    Lapband Symptoms

Hi Sherri, First, there is NO dumping syndrome with banding. Our anatomy and digestive processed are not altered, so there is no way anything like that could occur. There are certainly foods that people have trouble tolerating for one reason or another, and one thing I've found is that with weight loss I'm more sensitive to the ingredients in things (such as caffeine, and especially the MSG in Chinese food). I've just had to cut down a little. It is NOT the same thing as dumping syndrome. As for slippage, usually the symptoms are a dramatic change in restriction. Slippage can be severe or slight, and sometimes a slight slippage has no detectable symptoms. But a severe slippage can make it impossible to eat or drink, or can cause serious reflux. When that happens, the first line of defense is an unfill, which can sometimes fix the problem completely.
  12. It frustrates me so much when people are so negative about a surgery they know very little about. This is about you so please don't let anyone convince you that it's not the right thing. I am 100 pds overweight not because I can't lose weight, because I can't keep it off. I have lost and gained the same weight over and over again. I chose the lapband because I knew it would help with my weightloss but more importantly, help me keep the weight off long term. You still have time to make your decision. You'll know it's the right thing to do deep in your heart. There's a reason why you started this process so don't let the ignorance of others cause you doubt. I wish you the best in whatever you chose. I had my surgery on 12/26/07 and I have to tell you it was the best decision I ever made! Good luck! Jenn
  13. I haven't read all the response, so perhaps this has already been mentioned. Yes, losing weight without the band is possible. But keeping it off is another matter altogether. So your friends/family have seen you lose weight before and they've seen you put it back on. Wouldn't they like to see you keep it off this time? That's the whole point of losing the weight. And beyond about a 35 BMI to lose weight is more difficult and next to impossible to keep off. I have dieted before. I've lost weight. I want to say the most I've lost on my own was 40 lbs and that was back in HS. Since then I've yo-yoed my way up the scale. With the band, I've not only lost more in one weight-loss endeavor than ever before, but when I've slipped in my eating habits, it hasn't been near as bad as it has been in the past. I know that this time will be for good and it is certainly a relief.
  14. I am going to rat myself out here. A couple years ago, one of our officers decided to have the lapband surgery. He is a little shorter than me and our builds were a little bit different. But the weight difference was not as much as most thought it to be. When he told us he was getting the surgery, I openly stated to all that would listen that he was taking "the easy way out". Then, after listening to him, doing my own research and talking to my dr, I realized that you had to treat it like a tool to HELP you lose weight. It was no guarantee. I started to seriously consider it for myself as I had pretty much lost all control of my weight and was approaching 400 much to quick. I was banded on 8/28/07. I have lost right about 90 lbs. (haven't weighed myself in a wk as I am at a plateau) and actually doing better than he is. However, when people ask me why I am doing better than he is, I simply tell them I don't know. It is not my place to figure why some lose better than others. The only thing I will say (here, nowhere else) is he doesn't concentrate on exercise. He only does the diets. But, that is what he figures for him. As long as he is happy with how he is doing, so am I. Basically, if someone is trying to downplay what needs to be done, educate them. I am a converted "know-it-all" when it comes to WLS.

    Support group

Hey all. I was just wanting to let anyone know who is interested that I have started a Facebook page for upcoming weight loss surgeries. There is not any monthly support groups for this year posted to this forum yet and I know I could really use the support and encouragement. Here is the link if anyone would like to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/262943937492838/
  16. I've never really been a huge drinker, and before surgery it was not uncommon for me to go many months without a drink. I had my surgery Nov., 2015 and am living an entirely different lifestyle in a new country where drinking alcohol is the one common denominator at every social event. Because I suffer from social anxiety, this appeals to me because it calms me down and makes me more outgoing and friendly. That is, if I wasn't drinking I would stay home. My question is how does this effect weight loss and maintaining weight?

    Alcohol for Bariatric Vets

Thank you all for your experiences. I'm not worried about overdoing it and blacking out or anything like that. I'm really just concerned about my waist line! As far as addiction goes, I'm not worried about that either because I have always been to some extent an addictive personality he and I have never had a goal to not be that. I've never had long-term problems with drinking or stopping drinking. I just don't want to gain weight.

    2wk update and heart racing

Congratulatios on your progress and optimism. I too had an accelerated heart 1-3 weeks post op, and also around eating time. When I mentioned it to my dr he said not to worry, that it was normal. I can't fully remember his explanation for it, but it was something that had to do with metabolism, digestion, and body temperature during and after eating. Some reaction/interaction of all these. Sorry I don't fully remember. I didn't worry much because it eventually went away, and it was never too accelerated to frighten much. I too had dizziness and lightheadedness for a while, maybe up to 5 weeks. I was vigilant of protein, water, vitamins, but I was still dizzy. This too went away around 6 weeks. Six weeks marked a turning point for me. That's when I gained energy and was pain free. I didn't return to work till two months after surgery, and I'm glad I was able to do that because based on some post surgery stories here, I struggled a bit more recovering than others. Be patient, but very careful with yourself. God bless you!
  19. So hereI am again ... bothering the hell out of you amazing supportive people but please bare with me again! so the decision have been made!! I am going to have a sleeve!! in 3 weeks may be 4 MAX as soon as the money is all there. Talked to my doctor and he just asked me to do some lab tests and other chest and cardio ones too. Also he told me I should go on a diet!! one week before my surgery!! I was like Doctor I have been on a diet forever! LOL he laughed back and he was like I dont wanna put u on a liquid diet for so long so you either go on a strict diet one week before the surgery or just have a liquid diet 4 days before the surgery! he knows liquid diet sucks when I am on a band!!! Now dont get me wrong.. I do believe after reading nearly half of the board that some see that the band makes u have bad food choices which I agree with so much!! but It restricted ur eating one day? I cant get chicken down for example which most of you can't too but if ever I managed too I still dont lose weight or may be have a little gain at the end of the week.. so WHAT IF ! I started eating healthier on my sleeve with restriction ofcourse and I still didnt lose the weight?! Quiet frankly I have been having less than 1000 calories a day for god knows how long now! and I am still flactuating between the same 6 pounds!! even with running involved and everything I still dont see results! Is my body saying its over for u! thats the lowest u can reach?! I know there is no one who can guarantee me I can lose the weight after my sleeve but If my sleeve will just let me eat more comfortably "With restriction" -and comfortably I mean without feeling the stuck food in my throat - and I still consume the same low amount of calories.. then whats the difference it could make with my weight?! I hate to be another failure at another procedure! this might crush my forever .. you know? so let me know your thoughts.. and If I couldnt make myself clear as I mentioned before English is my second langauange please please let me know so I can try to clear it more out! I am still happy but worried, afraid ofcourse of the surgery as usual.. then Excited after seeing the success stories!! I am also terrified of the liquid diet I will have to be on before and after my surgery!! I couldnt get one clear thought out of the board about it! some feel good with certain liquid and others dont! Will I still be able to consume latte? knowing it is skimmed skinny one? I hate citrus stuff like oranges freshly squeezed juice .. so what did u have on ur liquid diet?! before and after? Thanks again !!
  20. I haven't been there yet but I'm concerned about becoming obsessed with how I look and what I weigh every day. I'm really trying to stay focused on the non scale victories. Some people in my life are weight obsessed and I'm planning on responding about comments on my looks with "thanks. I feel just great". You are going through a major change! Good luck!

    Arms ?

Weight lifting is really the best. I've had good results but alas, nothing replaces plastic surgery. The top is muscle but the bottom is loose skin:

  23. Hi, I've been away for a while but need some help. I was sleeved on 11/14/13 and initally lost 65 lbs and never got to my goal of 160. I remained at 195 for almost a year and am now creeping up ever so slowly and feel awful. I'm at 202 today. I despertedly want to get to goal and start losing again but I'm at a loss as to where to start. I can still 2 1/2 years out eat very little, only 3 oz of pure Protein at a time. I don't eat serious junk but find myself picking. I am thinking it is a combination of things, I don't think I eat enough (I'm about 700 cals most days), I don't exercise and fear my metabolism is shot. I'm still drink Protein shakes 2 a day. Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? How do I start the weight loss again? Is the 5:2 something to consider? Looking for any and all advice. Thanks in advance.

    Weight loss

Maybe the people who have lost 50/60 lbs in 2 months are starting from a very high weight or had very high levels of Water retention. I lost a lot the first few days of the pre-op diet. It is amazing how much water my body was holding onto.
