I have mild GERD, should I get VSG or RNY?
Arabesque replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had reflux before my sleeve surgery but it is a stage before gerd. I also managed it with dietary choices & only had symptoms if I made poor food/drink choices. I still have reflux post surgery but it manifests differently. I take Nexium every day whereas prior to surgery I only took it as needed (months between taking one). It generally manages it except for a little throat burning late at night or early morning 4 or 5 times a week. But this is a conversation to have with your surgeon as they will be best placed to assess the severity of your gerd & the possible risks of worsening your gerd having sleeve surgery versus RNY. -
Burning/Tearing Sensation 8 Months Out
SummerTimeGirl posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Let me first start off by saying yes, I DO plan on running this by my doc and/or my surgeon soon. But, a few weeks ago I sorta took a deep breath, held the air as I filled/ my abdomen, then sorta pushed my stomach out (think lower stomach area), if that makes any sense, and immediately got this tearing/burning sensation to the right of my belly button. It sorta reminded me of that feeling most of us got/had shortly after surgery. I had not felt this feeling since then until now. But yeah, every time I would breathe deeply, hold my breath, then push my abdominal cavity I would feel this. So I stopped doing it, of course. I remember this similar feeling after surgery and even mentioning it to the surgeon and was told it was just due to sutures and whatnot inside and possibly the nerves healing and that it would go away. Anyway, I was feeling ok since I stopped doing that and it didn't give me any further issues until today when I bent over to give the dog some water and my fat roll/stomach kinda scrunched up between my upper thighs and my upper stomach and again, I felt immediately that sharp, burning/tearing sensation to the right of my belly button. Not sure what to think about it. It does not hurt when lifting anything heavy and so far my husband and I cannot seem to feel a lump/bulge or anything when palpitating the area. I do not feel nauseous, fever, nothing off that would indicate a hernia or some similar problem. HOWEVER, having said that, when I did have my surgery my surgeon did say he saw a small hernia in that are but said that he did not think it would be a problem so he didn't do anything with it. But now I half wonder if its that, or is it a muscle tear? I just don't know. Has anyone experienced something similar? Again, I am 8 months out now so I'd imagine all healing inside should have been completed LONG ago. -
2 weeks into process, crazy insurance rules and confused!
LisaCee replied to LisaCee's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Gee, that sounds very similar, although they told me (on this WEIRD group chat) that I could set everything for ASAP. Won't it be fun if that isn't correct? I have endoscopy, sleep study, cardiac clearance, upper GI, some other lung study (X-ray?) to do. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to have to carbo-load near the end of this stress, just to ensure that I don't lose too much weight. The whole 'lose but not too much!' thing is likely to drive me batty! Plus it seems extremely unproductive and antithetical to learning new habits. Trying to stay positive, but like I say, I'd prefer to type-A it, making specific goals of weight per week, IF they tell me the 'by when' date for losing. -
February 2022 Surgery Buddies
MimmyMim replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I am a little freaked out about my insurance. Surgery is scheduled for 2/3, and I am super excited now that I am on the liquid diet. (I think it seems real now.). But, I learned today that unless and agreement is reached between the hospital and Anthem in the next week or so, the hospital will not be in-network on February 1! -

Sounds like mine tho my insurance wont cover it and i am paying cash. Tho i thought by paying cash it would be quicker. My 1st appointment was last month wtih the surgeon. Was not even 5 minutes. I had to go pick up a binder at another office with all the information. I had to do that Nutrition class which was completely pointless and useless. It was 40 minutes on zoom with some other people telling me the same things i already knew thru youtube videos (there went $400) As for labs and such they sent me that a few weeks later thru the mail but warned me not to do them yet because apparently the labs and other stuff like xrays and EKG were only good for say 30 days. If i did it too early i would have to redo them. But yea i got no diet to follow either. They said that would be a part of the 2nd surgeon appointment. Next up i have a psychological evaluation in March. After that if everything is good then i can make my 2nd surgeon appointment where they will look over everything and let me know if we can schedule surgery or not. -

Hi, I just started with a Bariatric Center with the goal of gastric sleeve, and I'm confused enough it's frustrating. Had my first visit with surgeon, he told me that for my insurance, I should lose 10 lbs (no more without endangering my insurance).. Seems like it's five months until surgery, possibly six. I then attended a (no lies, pretty bad) online group nutritional presentation, that really skimmed over things like no caffeine and no carbonated bees, and was also informed that I had responsibilities to make ALL my pre op appointments myself, but I haven't been given any list of labs/tests to do so. I have no diet assigned... ? No instructions were specific about what I should be eating right now, but am trying to go for a LOT more protein and a LOT less carbs. Am I supposed to be starting with protein shakes? They mentioned, but no real clear direction. No followup appointments with the bariatric center have been scheduled as yet, no one has returned my call of last week, basically begging for my pre op appointment list. I try to be patient but am definitely a type A person who likes to plan. I am worried about losing too much weight and very confused about what specifically my diet IS. Already down about 2.5 pounds. I don't do well with uncertainty I guess. Also, the changes over the past two weeks, eating less, the ever=present journalling of food, the appointments I have been called for (apparently, not everything was my responsibility), the trying to lessen the caffeine, and my beloved sodastream plain seltzers, is difficult. I'm definitely planning to call the center with more specific questions this week, and in hopes I receive a call back, but can anyone give me a feel for what the first couple weeks in a program are like, and should I relax about what feels like chaos? -
Everyone’s preop diet is different. Mine was low fat carb sugar for two weeks and two days liquid and that was hard enough. Some people have to do several weeks liquid. I would just count your blessings if I were you.

I have mild GERD, should I get VSG or RNY?
AchieveGoals posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi guys! I have my surgery in March, and my surgeon said it's still up for discussion in terms of which surgery I could undergo. I was thinking to do the VSG. I recently had an endoscopy done where it showed I have mild GERD. I brought this up to my surgeon and he said that either surgery done will be fine for me (VSG or RNY). But I'm wondering if thats the salesman in him talking because I thought even slight traces of GERD before VSG will get worse after. So I wanted to know your experiences. Any of you had mild GERD before surgery and how it is after the VSG? Right now I'd say I take tums 1-2x a week. Sometimes an occasional Pepcid. I do admit I have trouble with bulimia and eating disorders for a good 8 years which caused a lot of the GERD problems. Please no judging I'm really looking for help and insight from patients who have gone through something similar. Will my GERD become horribly worse after VSG? -
Confession: Back To Basics - 2020 Broken Back &COVID Weight Gain
Chel1 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here Goes; I have been in denial & coming back home to this forum has made me "see" that I have a lot of work to do & accountability. In the Spring of 2020 during the height of COVID my neighbors dog ran out on me and as I stumbled while trying to get away from the dog I fell, hit the concrete, & couldn't move. I had broken a bone in my back. I cried at every day for at least 2 weeks due to the pain. I was immobilized and the work I did outside of my home that had me active, lifting heavy items, & always moving I could no longer due. Here 1 1/2 years later I continue to have back issues. If I walk too long, lift too much or sit too long I am in pain. Although I can't consume a lot of food at one time, I know I am getting calories in with the wrong things. After surgery I was no longer able to drink straight water, it would make me nauseated and it would come back up so I know I am not getting enough fluids in. I am vitamin deficient (lab results) and I have put too much of my time into helping family & friends that honestly, I forgot about me. I was at 163lbs now I am at 190. I was 33lbs from goal now I am at 60lbs from goal. I know to some it may not seem like a lot but most of us know losing 5lbs takes a lot of effort! Bariatric Pal Forums: Coming back home & reading posts after being away so long has made me look at myself in the mirror & remember what I did in the first place that made my weight loss successful. SO HERE I GO: recommitting to myself; committing to the 30/15 rule (wait to eat 15 mins after drinking and wait to drink 30 mins after eating), COUNTING my calories & making sure I get in my grams of protein (which Unjury is a great brand), finding health zero cal/sugar enhancers to get my water in daily; & getting back to strength training that would not put a strain on my back. I don't know about you guys but COVID time gave me an excuse to cancel my Planet Fitness membership 😕 Am I going to do what they call a "pouch reset"? Nawhhhh...I'm doing a recommitment to self reset. I know what to do & I have all the tools (food scale, portion control serving utensils etc.) I am raising the bar once again for my life. Thank you Fitness Pal Family for always being here and giving all of us prodigal children a home to come back to. eating reset back to basics.doc- 7 replies

Looooong stall - Almost two months out
The Greater Fool replied to LouLouM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've got the one sure-fire way to avoid stalls: Get off the scale. Scales are crazy-makers. You know the saying that a watched pot never boils? Well, a watched scale never moves. Trust your plan and the weight will come off. Good luck, Tek -

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
Jenn21 replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I had my sleeve done on Dec.27th. In 2 days I will be 4 weeks post-op. I've been walking more and more. I was wondering if anyone did anything else besides walking this early on? I was in the mood to play my Just Dance games on Xbox and WII but don't know that I should yet. Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated!! -

Hello everyone. On Tuesday, it will be 8 weeks since I had gastric sleeve surgery. I am having a long stall. It's been over two weeks where I keep gaining and losing the same 2 lbs. Is it normal to stall this long? Thank you. -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?
SwedishPisces replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
October 8th, emergency surgery on the 10th, second emergency surgery on the 15th! Finally was able to start eating puréed foods at the very end of December/beginning of January. I was finally told I can eat foods except bread, pasta and raw vegetables but I can’t eat more than about 700 calories a day and now my weight loss has stalled and I don’t know why. It is very frustrating after all the issues I have had. Happily take advice, please!!! -
it's the infamous three week stall. It just came a little early for you (actually, it did for me as well, I had it weeks 2 and 3). Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll break and you'll be on your way again. That happens to probably 90% of us. if you want to read about this stall, do a search on this site for the "three week stall". You'll find over 17,000 posts on it. And no, I am NOT kidding.

I I was told that as well but then 2 weeks before my surgery they said I should start with shakes, small meal is chicken and vegetables lunch, small fruit and shake for dinner. I’m assuming to get used to the amount of calories you will be trying to take in post op. I am on all clear liquids on Sunday for surgery on Monday.

Daily calories one month p/o from RNY?
Guest replied to ladygodiva's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I mean, a fact of human life is we need breaks You're doing so well otherwise, don't beat yourself up! Time to enjoy not being over BMI35 anymore - our risk dropped with the pounds. I caught delta 5 weeks back and I'm glad to have it overwith, and they can come with omicron, too. We're all going to get it anyway, and now we're no longer morbidly obese, so yay us, we'll live. -
Gout Flare-up, time-frame, and remedies
MistySkye replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My brother had this same problem, doctor told him it would likely flare after his surgery. It sure did. Made the first weeks more miserable. On the flip side, surgeon said after that it should improve or go away after the weight loss. -
The EXACT same thing is happening to me. I'm walking 10,000 steps (5 miles) a day and drinking my water, focusing on protein, etc. The scale is going UP! What the hell?! I don't think either one of us are doing anything wrong. I think we're in a stall based on our increased physical activity. Scales suck!
-
I have been walking 4 miles + for 3 weeks now. I'm keeping up my protein, water and rest. The scales never moved until today it showed a 5 pound gain, I'm sick about it! what am I doing wrong? I'm 6 mos out from vsg Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

Here it is almost 3 months for me and it seems like I’ve hit a stall again! I barely eat and having issues with hydration. This is becoming really frustrating just at about 40lbs. Since surgery on the 8th of Nov. but now no weight loss for a week. My level of frustration is UNEXPLAINABLE -
