How Many Grams of Sugar per Day?
toasty replied to bakawaka's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know that I have ever heard anyone indicate the maximum grams of sugar per day. And I know that not all sugar is created equal, so to speak. Generally, sugar found in milk (lactose) is not as much of a problem as say table sugar or high fructose corn syrup, so I wouldn't worry about the sugar in Nonfat Greek yogurt. Other yogurts may have added sugar, though. Also, although fructose and sucrose can be a problem, in fruits with a high level of Fiber (such as apples, for example) the sugar is not really a problem. So the answer seems complicated, and I don't really think there is a simple "no more than X grams of sugar" answer. Generally, I follow the rule of very little ADDED sugar, or very little sugar from low-fiber products. -

You are doing great! I know it is hard not to feel down right after surgery. I had to force myself to eat and to walk...but I kept doing it, knowing it would be a temporary struggle. I was allowed to eat non fat greek yogurt, fat free cream soup (strained), SF popsicles, SF Jello and pudding, Protein shakes, sf applesauce (toss in some powdered milk and dilute), diluted cooked Cereal like cream of wheat, oatmeal or grits (but my pouch hated the cream of wheat). Do as much walking as your body will allow...that was the only thing (other than the PPI doc prescribed), that got rid of the gas and stomach pains. You are not alone, and you do have this!!! Hang in there! -
Please help me with some food ideas!
Trayjay33 replied to RuxieGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Looking back at 3 months out my diet was very limited. I had various Greek yogurts, chef salads with light dressings usually a Italian or vinaigrette, also shrimp with steamed vegetables. As far as chicken I could only tolerate hibachi chicken strips or chicken wings at the time. I also ate a small amount of berries on some days. Good luck -

Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)
amber5281 replied to Need-a-Sleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello all!! I am a nurse in central Florida. I've been a nurse for 8 years, first as a bedside nurse on a surgical unit, then team leader and most recently manager. I was just sleeved on 10/8. I am still on liquids and having a hard time with the protein. It is so thick and gives everything a funny taste. I don't like yogurt so the only thing I really enjoy that has protein is my instant breakfast. After two weeks of pre-op I am having a hard time stomaching the protein shakes!! I went in GNC the other day for some suggestions on how to get the protein in and to look at the Isopure stuff. The guy that worked there was such a jerk- do you ever feel like if you were skinnier you would get much better service? So I am still confused on how to get protein in being on full liquids.. Anyone have any suggestions? I am looking forward to starting my journey - glad I found some nurses to share it with !! -
I am doing much better. Thanks for the soup straining idea. I am 1 week tomorrow but I started Greek yogurt, creamed soup, and sugar free pudding today.

My first week was clear liquids so I used premier protein (my surgeon allowed this as an exception to the clear rule), and ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate. My second week was full liquids (which also included Greek yogurt and cottage cheese). I also used ProtiDiet creamy chicken and tomato basil soup. -
Question from a pre-op
BLERDgirl replied to buzzly36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm gonna add this because I see soooo many folks having trouble with constipation. Wheat germ, flax powder or psyllium powder. A tsp added to a shake, yogurt or applesauce should help keep you regular. -

Thank you all. However my surgeons suggestions are if it matches the consistency than u can go with it. Cream of wheat is way tom heavy and has zero nutrition. I am against caned food so fresh Miso Soup is full of protein and it's like water. And being I'm trying to get out of diabetes having a drinkable yogurt loaded with sugar is not a good idea when cultured milk is a natural praboitic with protein same consistency as yogurt even thiner. I would say look further for much better items and ask your doc those are just few suggestions they put on paper. -
Wondering if I'm doing something wrong
BLERDgirl replied to sonnysun's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What is on your food plan? You can add wheat germ, flax powder, psyllium to food on a soft diet. They are all excellent forms of fiber. Especially when added to high Protein foods like yogurts. They can also be blended into Protein shakes. Make sure you are getting in ALL your fluids since that will help with constipation as well. -
Today I tried to do better. I feel so full and the day is not even over! Wow I'm not used to eating like this. My NUT told me today that she saw me at the gym last week and was shocked that I have the body of a 14 year old boy. She feels I've gotten too thin to say the least. I don't agree but I know I'm close. She wants me to have a carb at every meal. So I tried this: 1. Breakfast Half a bagel (going to switch to whole grain tomorrow) Light cream cheese 2 slices turkey Tomatoes 2. lunch Lettuce Parmesan cheese 1/3 can of tuna 3. Snacks banana Beef jerky Yogurt 4. dinner 2 Meatballs salad (lettuce, kale, carrots) Dressing Avocado 1/4 cup wheat Pasta Feel like I'm going to explode!! It's a process. Going to take some getting used to!!

I find myself hungry at lot and it is starting to bother me. Need some advice. I usually workout for an hour 5 to 6 days a week, running 3 or 4 of those days, walking and weight training the other days. I eat but I am hungry a lot. Here is my typical food day. Breakfast (before working out): A banana, Protein bar, yogurt, a piece of Jerky or two boiled eggs. I try to drink a little Water but not enough to fill me up. (Can’t workout on a full tummy. Learned that the hard way. LOL!). When I get to work, I will have a yogurt or smart one egg breakfast sandwich. A little later I will drink water. I usually have a cup of coffee (sometimes two) before noon). Snack: Jerky, applesauce, Protein Bar, plain Peanut Butter or nuts. (Sometimes I forget to eat the snack) Lunch: Tuna or grilled chicken breast on top of some lettuce or a small salad or some leftovers from the night before. Afternoon: Drink more water; a Protein shake, nuts, rice cake or cheese/crackers Drink shake or water on the way home. Dinner: Whatever I cook. Maybe fish or chicken and veggies. Will eat a few roasted potatoes or a few mouthfuls of rice sometimes but I try to stay away from bread and rice as much as possible. Late night snack: Nuts or yogurt or jerky and water I will eat some chips or chocolate covered peanuts every once in a while as a treat but not often. Even with all of the water I drink, I am hungry a lot. I eat everything on a saucer. What doesn’t fit, I don’t eat. A lot of the time, I will eat 3 or 4 ounces of meat and leave the rest to nibble on later. What am I doing wrong? The scale is not moving but I am working out like a mad woman.

Could you make a smoothie with yogurt, milk, and some liquid egg whites...maybe some fruit? They are pasteurized and 3 TBL has 5g of protein. I used to add liquid egg whites to my green smoothies and couldn't taste them.

I'm very basic and simple. It's only hubby and I, so I don't get fancy very often. Breakfast: Protein shake or eggs and turkey bacon on the weekends Lunch: Tuna, chicken, or seafood salad or lunch meat roll up with lettuce or tomato. Very rarely I will make a sandwich with whole grain bread. Snacks if I'm hungry: Nuts, yogurt, cheese sticks, Jerky or fruit. Dinner: Protein like fish or beef, chicken or pork (prepared different ways) and green veggie or salad. Ta Da!

Way to go on your weight loss ladies! I went back to work this week and I am doing well. I am getting in iver 60 oz of water and 60-80 g of protein every day at this point. I go for my follow up with my surgeon 10/15 and can't wait to move on to pureed foods. He actually suggest that we chew the food to the puree. Any who, I am excited to move on. I have already incorporated low fat cottage cheese into my diet this week. I chew it really well and think it is s healthier option for me calorie and protein wise over yogurt. I can't find yogurt that I like without all the extras that I don't need and I love the cottage cheese plain. What's on your plates? ( or cups?)

Wondering if I'm doing something wrong
BLERDgirl replied to sonnysun's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would also add yogurt to this. Yogurt is higher in Protein. Perhaps for Breakfast try having some greek yogurt with a tsp of flax powder, wheat germ or psyllium sprinkled on top. Other lunch ideas are refried Beans with a bit of cheese or a ricotta bake with a bit of chopped spinach for some additional Fiber. These are also things that would make good dinner options as well For snack, try adding half an orange. The additional fiber several times a day may help with constipation and help break the stall. These foods may also help get you closer to your protein goal which may help break the stall. You might also want to start keeping a food diary for a bit so you have a better idea of how you are meeting your protein goals. -

I am on soft foods, eggs, refried Beans, avocados, yogurt, tuna--all okay. I don't think the pulled pork was okay. My husband made it in the crock pot and thought it would be okay but after about five bites I thought better of it. It wasn't on my list as an okay food to eat, either. That was my mistake. I am getting all my liquid in but probably not all my Protein, at this point. -
1. Breakfast. I often workout in the morning so I tend to make a Protein shake. My favorite is greek yougurt, Protein powder + a tbsp of almond butter. Occasionally I switch it up and add fruit and spinach instead. On non-gym days I eat eggs w/ cheese, hardboil eggs or make overnight oats 2. lunch. My favorite lunch is a salad w/ either romaine, spinach or baby greens, black Beans, a hard boiled egg, shredded cheese, and with salsa or olive oil as dressing. I'll toss in avocado if I have some on hand. 3. Snack My go to are 1 ounce packs of nuts, Usually pistachios or cashews. 4. dinner. Most days soups. Sometimes I do a stir fry with seitan or tempeh. You can sub any lean protein. 5. Late night snack. I'm not a late not snacker. For one I eat dinner later than most, around 7pm most days. I'm also typically trying to get the rest of my Water in. Most often I go for a cup of tea if anything. However if I am feeling munchie. I like sliced cucumbers with a splash of lime and sriracha. It's the crunch and spice I often crave and next to no calories. If i'm feeling hungry, I eat a hard boiled egg, a string cheese or a small bit of yogurt. The small amount of fat usually fills me up.
