Sorry to hear of your bumpy start, but I'm happy to hear things are starting to turn around. It should continue to get easier as you heal & move through the different phases of the food plan. Perhaps the sugar free icepops may go down easier or a warm broth. It is a lot of trying to see what your new stomach likes. For me, I get on little "kicks" of things I like for a bit, and then want nothing to do with them, but I think it is from being so limited at earlier stages. (I haven't wanted soups or tuna for weeks!🤣) Good luck recovering & healing from your surgery. Wishing you the best on your weight loss path. -

It's great that you've taken control of your surgery, but it sounds like you should consider talking with a bariatric therapist. This should be someone they have on staff, but if not, hopefully they can refer you to someone. I'm shocked that they haven't done that. Congrats on your 100+ lbs weight loss. That's a thing to celebrate! -

Good morning! This is my first post here, but I have been "lurking" for a while. 😊 I had my RNY 3/17/2021 (HW 367, SW 349) and did GREAT for the first 3 months (down to 292.6). Around month 4 I noticed I could eat much more and when boredom hit, I would munch on snacks. I started eating "around" my surgery. Slider foods mostly. I hit my protein goals and water goals daily, but I have realized that I am a stress and emotional eater. In my program, we have a doctor, nutritionist, and a surgeon. I spoke with the nutritionist and the doctor about my habits and how I caused my own stalls. They were quite understanding and even offered to start a medication to control the appetite. (I work 2 jobs and I am a single mother, so I was using food to soothe myself when things were rough.) At my 6 month post-op appointment with my surgeon (279.8) I was hit with accusations of not wanting it bad enough and was told being stressed should make me lose weight, etc. Ugh! At the end of the appointment, he told me he believes in me and it frustrates him when patients aren't losing what he expects. So of course, I went home and did what I knew to do - I ate everything I could without getting sick. I woke up having lost 2 pounds. 🤦♀️ As angry as I was with my surgeon, he had changed something in me. He was wrong. I want it bad enough. I just don't know how to cope with stress well. I have always used food to self-medicate, to celebrate, to cope with life. I took up smoking and when I quit, the weight piled on. Today I am 263 pounds. I am 6 1/2 months post op. I am tracking every atom of food I consume again. I am drinking a gallon to a gallon and a half of water every day. I am walking more than ever. When I see him in 5 1/2 months, I want to be at goal. His goal for me is 200 pounds. My personal goal is 167. I did not need the medication to jump-start my weight loss again. I needed to be angry. I say this to say that I was not being honest with myself and when someone was honest with me, I became defensive. I still have days when I eat like crap or days when I don't want to walk. Such is life. I am fighting this food addiction with all my might and I really have my mean old surgeon to thank for the kick in the pants. ❤️

Right here. Surgery at the beginning of December. I’m stuck in the low 190s. If I track everything I put in my mouth I will start losing again but it is hard. Also going through a slight burnt popcorn phase so I think I have some nutrition deficiency going on. I also noticed I have to keep my protein slightly lower than what my surgeon wanted. So my daily goal in order to lose weight is 900-1000 cals with 70-90g of protein. I’ve turned into a grazer, hence needing to track, and tend to go over on the calories. We can do this! Tracking today! Thank you for the checkin.

I was very nervous leading up to surgery. It's very stressful, especially if you've never had surgery before, like me. I'm three weeks out now, and eating is hard, and I know some people feel very regretful for the first month, but then they start to feel very happy once life gets easier and the weight comes off. You can do this!

I worried incessantly about excess skin. Given all the posts about it, I think a lot of people do. But after losing all of my excess weight (over 200 lbs), I can tell you that I'd take the loose skin any day over weighing almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY! Besides, as the above poster said, that's a year or more down the road. AND...yours may or may not be that bad. MIne was "bad", as you can imagine, but it was easy to hide in clothes. AND...there's always the option of having it surgically removed if it really drives you nuts. I would focus on other things right now... -

@soon2bfit21 did you ultimately end up staying with the same doctor? I’m just so torn as do what to do I just want to cry. I’ve actually done well, lost weight, exercising regularly and doing good but I’ve never met my surgeon-4 months in. Not even on the day I had my scopes. And I had a nurse tell me some awful things about my doctor as a surgeon. I am a nurse and so I know how we sometimes get to see the bad side of doctors. This was more than just gossip talk it was how the doctor actually performed and such, he had worked 1on1 in the OR with the doctor. Anyway, I wonder if I call my insurance first? -

Hi Trishk01 i think everyone is different. I consumed myself with worrying if I was loosing weight as quickly as some.. then I realised we are all different. Our body is different, our start weights are different my surgeon advised me to aim for 50% of my excess weight by month 6. And as long as I was loosing a bit each week (minus any stalls) then I was doing good. Allow your body to do its job - also you don’t want it too quickly or risk issues with gall bladder. im 12 weeks tomorrow and I’ve lost 43lbs. My total target weight to loose is 70lbs. I’m averaging/seeing about 2-3lbs lost per week now which is a nice steady decrease. as long as your following plan, diet, protein and water - trust the process. 🥰 em -
Hi. I just found this forum. I'm starting my 2 week diet on the 18th of October, and I need advice on what to plan. I'm also struggling with knowing what needs to stop, when, and for how long. Also, concerned about the excess skin one the weight comes off. Thanks.

Wow. Good riddance I say. My husband lost 70 lbs taking a weekly injectible for diabetes before I had my surgery. I know he wanted me to lose weight too. I had the sleeve in Dec 2019, and lost 104 lbs in 12 months and am maintaining that weight eating and drinking what I want but in tiny portions. I eat healthier than I used to, but I definitely still eat things on occasion that I did not eat in the first year at all, and I had no alcohol for the first 12 months. I am lucky like that, he was very supportive and even did the shake diet with me in the beginning. He's a great cook and it was my love of his good cooking and my liking to eat that got me to 304 lbs in the first place. I ate it all willingly, but he cooks healthier for me now. After 30 years I can't imagine my life with out him. That guy wasn't the right one for you, be glad he helped you see that before he broke your heart or it cost you money.

Struggling with emotions

My surgery was May 28, and I'm doing well. I've lost over 60 pounds, and none of my clothes fit any more. (That's a good thing!) My new stomach tells me when to stop eating, and I'm learning the lessons. That's probably something everyone goes through, but there have been a few times when I ate too much and it was uncomfortable. Over the years, I've lost and regained 50 or more pounds three or four times. Finally, I think I have a way to lose weight and keep it off. I think you'll be happy too, three or four months from surgery when your weight is coming down. Good luck, and keep us posted. -
Is popcorn a slider food for you?

I know it is empty calories and we are not supposed to have it in weight loss phase but I met my protein goal already and I counted the calories for a small portion of it. Only problem was I was able to eat ALOT more than I expected. Is popcorn a slider food? It didn’t seem like it was ever going to trigger my full feeling. Seems like I could have eaten the whole bag (it was 100 calorie bag but still). -
Oddly, i didn't have that problem my first year (I had surgery in the summer of 2015). I was so excited about my weight loss and so gung-ho about following my program that I didn't want any of that stuff. I remember on that first Thanksgiving post-op I had some turkey with gravy, about 2 T of sweet potato casserole, some vegetables - and a thing of pumpkin-flavored yogurt for dessert. I was fine with that (can't remember what I had on Christmas, but I was really good at staying away from the "goodies"). Subsequent years I've caved more - but I just try not to overdo it. One cookie. A small piece of cake. I'm not a big candy fan, so that one was easy. So I do allow myself treats on those holidays - but I just have small portions on the holiday itself and don't keep them around my house the whole season - too tempting.

I too am lactose intolerant and love fish as my protein choice! I found I got less picky after surgery because my choices become more limited for a while. I used OWYN protein drink. There are more choices on Amazon. I did not use shakes except to taste until the pre-op diet. I lost 75 lbs before the pre-op sticking to eggs, and fish for protein. My dietitian has a range of protein for me to eat daily. Your dietitian will probably have that for you too. It was very hard for my to loose weight on the pre-op and post op liquid phase. My dietitian (sounds so bougie) fingered out there was too many carbs in the drinks for me to loose, even though I was 900 cal. or less. (Irish potato famine and Holocaust descendant). Each person is unique so it’s really a trial and error experiment to find what works with you. Having a professional who’s seen this before has helped me figure out what is sustainable. You can do this! Making mistakes just means you learned a new way to try instead.

I just remind myself that I'm choosing not to eat "junk" food. I think sometimes we compare ourselves to alcoholics or drug addicts when we are food addicts. We say things like alcoholics or drug addicts never have to have alcohol or drugs ever again to break their addiction but we have to have food. I know in my case, my addiction was sugar and junk foods and that's probably what got me to my highest weight. Now I try my best to avoid those and so far it's working. I just remind myself I never want to go back there! Whenever someones asks me, "can you eat this on your diet?" I tell them, "I'm not on a diet. I can eat anything I choose to eat...I choose not to eat that." -
I was Drinking 6-8 premier protein shakes plus 1 solid meal for dinner ^^^ I did worse than you. I was Taking in too much protein. Now I’m doing Whole Foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If I’m hungry aside from that, I drink only 1 premier protein shake during the day. I’ll have surgery in a few months. I wish I was losing a lot of weight but I’m not. Pcos and fibroids makes it extremely hard to lose more weight. You are doing great!!! Just drink 1 shake a day or none at all. Save the shakes for the liquid pre op diet. You got this!!!🥰😍

Certainly not trying to diminish what you’re experiencing. Just offering some suggestions, things to think about or discuss with your medical team. Head hunger encompasses more than just cravings it’s just the most obvious one that most relate to. But it’s also eating for emotional reasons: to sooth in response to anger, sadness, depression, anxiety, stress, etc. Head hunger is also habit driven eating. Like always eating when you go to the movies, watching tv, before you go to bed or eating very regularly (every hour or less). Also eating because you’re drinking alcohol & socialising. Plus perceptions of what is ‘enough’ food as I mentioned before. Because, if we’re honest when we’re obese, our body has plenty of stored energy in our fat it can burn if our body needs more calories than we’re currently consuming to function. It’s what we need to happen if we are to lose weight. Major surgery is stressful & doesn’t matter how ready you were for this surgery it still is an emotional roller coaster of various degrees. So that could be contributing. Is your esomeprazole prescription or over the counter? You may be producing too much stomach acid so you may need a higher dose - 20 or 40mg. The acid will make you think you’re hungry though you’re not. You eat & your tummy uses the acid to digest that food & the pain/pangs go so you think yes, I was hungry. Once you get onto solid foods this should reduce - more acid is needed to digest the denser food than just liquids & purées so you’ll use more of what you are producing. Hunger pains/pangs do not necessarily occur only when your hungry. They are the result of many triggers. My tummy gurgles, groans, squelches, often (it’s doing it now 😆) but is not related to me needing to eat. (Remember how when our tummy would gurgle people would say you must be hungry? Not necessarily true.) It can be from what I ate (dairy causes it sometimes), drinking too fast or having too big a swallow, or even resting my iPad on my chest when I read at night. Can be a bit embarrassing but it seems to be how my tummy works now. I hope you can find a way to manage & help what you’re experiencing. And I hope your medical team returns your call soon. So frustrating when they don’t follow through with support. All the best.

Hi, I had my band removed and a sleeve done in same operation, I now can eat all foods just half portions, it’s so much easier, I’ve not been sick once and no more stuck foods. I had my band in for 12 years and kept 6 stone off, I have lost just over a stone since having sleeve and now weigh just over 12 stone, I will be happy staying this weight

I really, really needed to hear this - thank you! My doctor said not to expect much weight loss, and I have been fretting about that. I didn't lose a lot on lap band or sleeve, but I realize I didn't take advantage of those tools nearly as well as I could have. -

So, I've been disappointed this last week with my weight loss, BUT I have a scale that also measures visceral fat. I also started back to crossfit, which may have something to do with it. While I only lost 2.5 lbs overall, my visceral fat decreased significantly. Maybe take measurements? Sometimes if you're not losing weight, you're still losing inches.
