    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    So far so good! 7 weeks post op. 68 lbs down. Getting in water is much easier with a straw (Was approved to use a straw by my surgeon's office) Now just gotta find a vitamin that doesn't make me nauseated.

    Yes your not suppose to with Nicotine in it the nicotine will stall your healing your stitches and lengthen your recovery time once you are healed you are allowed the vape as long as it’s 0 nicotine meaning no nicotine in it there is never any Tabacco in vapes

    Struggling

    Don't worry about getting it perfect, just do the best you can at most of it, like MiniDude said 80%. I never got three meals in a day. I'm not that kind of a girl. I'll get two meals in and two snacks but not an actual third meal. The exercise is beneficial for your mental health as well as physical health, but if you had to slack on one, this one would be the best to slack on. PRotein is easy to get in with protein shakes, protein bars, and protein-heavy foods. The 64 oz of water a day takes some getting used to, but once you reach that level it's easy to maintain. Just sip, sip, sip all day long, constantly and consistently. And stuff like broth and sugar free popsicles counts as water/liquids. You can do it, it just takes practice. None of us did it magically overnight.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Hi All I am coming up on my two month post op this week. Things have really gotten easier for me the last two weeks. I think I have kind of found a groove that works for me. Protein shake for breakfast, a small lunch, and a larger dinner. I tolerate almost all foods now without difficulty. Chewing and not rushing of course. I had a 20 day stall and gained weight which was a little frustrating but I picked up my exercise routine. I hit ten miles on my Apple Watch one day. Luckily it is warm where I live so I can walk up and down the beach. But after starting the exercise, the weight is dropping off. Happy to report I am at 50 pounds less today than at my Pre-Op appointment. I don’t notice the scale changes that much and only weigh in once a week but I notice how much better I feel. This for me is about living the rest of my life as healthy as I can. Congrats to my November surgery buddies that have survived the first two months. Things should get easier and better for us all.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I'm lucky with the caffeine. Just a unsweet iced tea a couple times a week. Stopped those this week. Glad that's not permanent! It's nice to have something to drink besides water since I don't like coffee of any kind. Nutritionist recommended UNJURY Chicken Soup Whey Protein powder to make broth. Apparently the taste is amazing and the extra protein makes it more filling. You can only order it on the UNJURY website. I like Premiere Protien Shakes, Optimum Whey Protien powders and ProtienO2 water. Concerned I won't be able to all the Protien I need all the time, so I also bought some unflavored Optimum Whey Protien powder to add to food. Nutritionist recommended whey Protien when using powders. You can get the Optimum and ProtienO2 from Amazon. I used Subscribe and Save to get up to 15% off. I also bought a highly-rated bariatric cookbook by Sarah Kent ($10 on Amazon). It helped me feel more optimistic about food post-recovery. I'm going to try some of the recipes before surgery to know what I like now and not when I'm hangry. One question for everyone...you going to use a post-surgery abdominal binder?     Struggling

    I can highly recommend an 80/20 approach. Do right 80% of the time, don't stress about being perfect. I've had way too much alcohol (don't worry, not daily or ever alone); I've had weeks where I didn't exercise, I've had days when I went way over my calorie goal, I stopped taking iron months ago, I have to make sure I don't eat popsicles all day long, every day. Damn, I love those. And you know what? I got all the way to my goal and beyond. Because this is a long journey, and it's not about perfection. Sure, your team will tell you so-and-so, but nobody does everything right, all the time. So there's a choice; do everything right for a short time or do some things right for the long haul. Which do you want?

    Feb 2022 Surgery date, new here

    I saw your post and just wanted to share that I can relate! I am scheduled for February 3, and I have been so excited. I have loved all of the “getting ready” tasks, as I felt like I was taking control. But as the surgery date gets closer, I am getting anxious. I had emergency abdominal surgery four years ago that led to a two week hospital stay and three month recovery. I keep thinking about that time period, and it really makes me nervous. I am talking to a therapist, and that is definitely helping. So, I don’t have advice for you, but I wanted to share that I definitely understand the worry! Over the past few days, I have gone back to “getting ready”. I set up my journal for meal planning, weight loss tracking, measurement tracking, goals, etc. I have started ordering supplies, such as toddler plates, little forks, small containers, etc. I am about to get sample packets of the various protein shakes my doctor recommends so I will know what I like. All of this is reminding me that I am making a choice to take action to improve my health, and that puts my mind at ease.

    Struggling

    I'm about 3.5 months out, and have always struggled to eat the amounts of food that my dietician wants me to aim for. It is getting better, though! I'm almost up to a whole cup, which felt impossible even a couple of weeks ago. My priorities are protein, vitamins and water, and I manage to double up on the protein and water by drinking protein-water which gives me my baseline 60g of protein each day. That frees me up to add extra protein via food and protein-fortified soy milk, without me feeling like I'm a bloated sack all day. I take all my supplements before bed once I know I'm finished my daily water intake. I try to eat nutritious meals three times a day with varying degrees of success in terms of quantity. I don't beat myself up about it if I don't manage a lot, and neither does my dietician. I'm getting my protein, water, and supplements in and that's the most important thing. Exercise I do every afternoon in the form of a good walk. Pop my headphones on and out I go. I enjoy this chance to unwind the mind. Ultimately, don't beat yourself up! I don't think any of us crack on out the gate with perfection. The post-op life has goals and milestones, and so long as you're trying your best, things will improve and click into place. Heartily recommend the protein water though. Two birds with one stone has definitely made it all a bit easier!

    January surgery anyone?

    Hey everyone! I had my sleeve surgery last Wednesday, on January 5th. I go for my one week post-op tomorrow. Feeling better as every day passes, but the last two days I feel like I’m SO HUNGRY. Which I don’t feel should be happening since the sleeve helps prevents the hunger hormone secretion. I still haven’t tried anything other than thinned protein shakes and broth, and when I have a very small amount of either I end up very full. But in between is what’s getting to me. Anyone else have this issue or know if it’s normal?
  10. Hello, I am 3 months out from surgery (rny). We have the priorities of 1. Getting enough protein in a day 2. Taking all our meds 3. Getting 64oz of liquids 4. Exercise 5. Three meals a day. How the heck do you balance all this?? I feel like if I do good with one thing one day, I am not doing the others. This clearly takes dedication. But give me some tips and tricks that can help a lady out please. What made you all successful? Thanks in advance!
  11. Don’t get frustrated my Dr told me some patients do not loose anything for 6 weeks because your body is in shock and upset from surgery and trying to heal. Just stick to the program it will come off I go through 3-5 days loose nothing then I’ll loose a pound and then loose a little everyday for a few days then bam nothing again. I wanted more weight loss but the Dr said I’m doing good plus slow weight loss is better than fast because it gives your body time to catch up and tone up like you said. Also I was on the liquid preop for a little over a month so I’m so ready for real food. I am walking 2 miles a day and that is in the house because the weather outside it not walking weather. 3 more weeks I’m cleared to go to the gym. Also make sure you’re getting your Water in that helps a ton. I do a Protein Shake at 8 AM and pretty much only eat puréed tuna all day ever 2 hours 3 ounces and if I’m hungry again after 6 I do another Protein shake. i feel like I am eating cat food with all the puréed tuna but it’s the only thing my body likes right now

    I’m 5lbs from normal BMI - and it feels like it’s crawling, but I’m still losing on avg 1lb per week, so within a normal expected loss range. I actually have been upping my calories lately, and out of nowhere dropped 2.6 this week.
  13. Congrats! I’m a bit jealous I must admit. I lost 13.5 lbs the first week after surgery. I lost nothing on the pre op liquid diet after not eating for 7 days and walking 10,000 steps per day on average. This coming Friday I’ll be 4 weeks post op and I haven’t lost anything in the last 3 weeks. I’m starting to feel like God wants me to be fat and/or I just have to accept that I’m going to lose it slower than most but not have lose skin in the end and hopefully have the body that I actually want.. smaller but toned. I am happy for you but I’m not sure why my scale isn’t moving so soon after weight loss surgery. I want to be out of the 200’s already. I started at 241 and have stalled at 228 for 3 weeks now. I’m frustrated. Any tips?
  14. Yes! My surgery date was on 12/27/21. I’m from San Diego and had my surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. I’m actually 2 weeks post op. I’m new to this site and I need lots of support. Any recipes on lentil soups?

    10 months post-op

    it took me 20 months to lose all my weight, and the last three or four months were slow as molasses. I was eating more than 680 calories, though. I was eating more like 1200. the closer you are to a normal BMI, the harder and slower it is to lose weight. Three to five lbs a month is actually pretty good. There were some months near the end when I only lost about 2 lbs the whole month. ever go to Weight Watchers meetings and listen to these barely overweight people scream and moan about how hard it is to lose 10 lbs? I used to (mentally) roll my eyes when I overheard such conversations. Now I totally get it. just stick to your plan. It'll be slow, but you'll get there.
  16. I saw the Dr for my preop today she was shocked I could get up without pain!! I am down 28 pounds from liquid phase to today AND I’m 199 today!! Under 200 whoop whoop!! I also saw my endocrinologist and my Blood sugar was 105 I haven’t been on meds since 2 days preop (had surgery 12/22, I am off all diabetic meds AND cholesterol meds - in fact I am med free already!!! I really regretted having this surgery day 1-6 of surgery but today I’m over the moon happy I had it because all the reasons I did have already happened!!! I’m not even 3 weeks out!!!
  17. I am pain free and have been since day 3. On the purée stage. Am walking 3 miles 5 times a week. Can’t wait to eat real food. I have never been hungry since I Started on shakes on Dec 8 th.
  18. Hey all! I'm also scheduled for Feb 3rd and I'm getting the sleeve here in the Los Angeles area. I started this process back in August, and now that I'm weeks away, it's a little overwhelming. I'm mostly really excited, so I'll focus on that emotion as much as possible.

    If you are post surgery it could be your hormones going wacky on you. Mine did a bit and I just didn’t want to do anything for a couple of weeks but then it leveled out. How long Have you been seeing this therapist? Do you like them? Sometimes it is good to be reminded that we have good stuff going on in our lives too but I hope that is not really all your therapist is offering you in terms of help. Are you upset about something specific or just feeling down? If you are having a hard time with the loss of food like lizonaplane mentioned, the bariatric therapist may be better equipped to help you through that. If you do not feel that your therapist is helping you then try someone else. I went through several until I found the right fit.

    10 months post-op

    I agree. I was sleeved March 9 and also started with a low BMI. I am 9 pounds from goal (and top of “normal” bmi) and seem to be almost stalled there. I am going to try adding exercise before reducing calories any further but I am eating a lot more than you at 1000-1200 most days.

    Return to work

    I had a loop duodenal switch (SADI) and took off 5 weeks as the surgeon recommended. I was really bad off and in/out of the ER the first two weeks. Later I’ve been dealing with other things like gallbladder pain, trouble swallowing… let’s just say I was so thankful I took the time off. I would have been in pain trying to sit in the office all day and needed a lot of time to push fluids and food. Hell it’s still hard 7 weeks out to work and take proper care of myself. Y’all who took off just a few days amaze me.
  22. Sorry to hear about the stomach aches and headaches. I discovered this past week stevia gives me headaches. I’m surprised I’m not as hungry anymore. I think after day 3. My stomach is like too much liquid when it comes time for water. I hope you feel better soon.

    No period for 3 months...

    Is this normal? I got a period (a pretty heavy one) about a week after my surgery in September and since then, nothing. I'm 39, I'm not on any kind of hormonal birth control (and not sexually active so I'm NOT pregnant). I've never been formally diagnosed with PCOS but it's been suspected. My mother went through menopause really young (early 40s). I don't have any children. For the first few months following my surgery, between some new food sensitivities and just general adjustment, I had problems getting enough food in my system (I was running on maybe 200 calories a day because it was all I could comfortably ingest). I wonder if that has something to do with it but now that issue has been largely resolved and I'm up toward 600 a day and hitting my protein goals most of the time (and able to get all my vitamins down too!) so I thought this would have been resolved by now but nope! I wouldn't be heartbroken if I found out I was going through menopause already, but I just wanted to ask the brain trust if anyone else had this experience or not?

    My date is 1/25/2022, I start the preop Milk diet tomorrow for the next 2 weeks until the big day, I have a preop nutrition class on 1/17 and then my preop appointment 1/21...I am super nervous and excited. New Year new Me!
