  1. I've sure found them this week. Gained two lbs. Let's see BBQ beef or pork every night. Baked potato with goodies. (What do you mean, potato is not a vegetable?????) Multiple alcoholic drinks during the cooking part. Takes so long to cook, potato chips and dip are in order. And ice cream. Don't forget the ice cream. I have good restriction. I have bad habits! :hungry: Oh, well, summer is nearly over and indoor cooking will happen again. Sigh!

    Getting sleeved in June

Every habit you need to adopt after surgery, adopt now. Eat the right amount of protein, chew your food thoroughly, don't drink before, during or after meals, make your meals last 30 minutes, exercise at least 5 times a week, figure out if there are foods you should completely avoid, stop drinking alcohol. These are habits, and habits need to be developed.
  3. I just posted this in another thread 5 minutes ago, so I'm just gonna copy and paste. I've been preaching about sugar addiction...if you think you have a "sweet tooth", there's a good change you're a full-on sugar addict. Do some research...it's as physically addictive as cocaine, and imaging shows that it lights up the same areas of the brain as cocaine addiction does. I always thought I just had a sweet tooth.... it wasn't until years after surgery (and 55 lbs of regain) that I learned about this. Understanding that it's just as real as an alcohol or drug addiction, and recognizing it in myself, has made all the difference in the world in my ability to get off and stay off the stuff. Please research it and understand it. It's the one and only thing that I wish I'd known about ahead of time.

    Coffee?

    1. How about you? YES - no coffee/caffeine EVER, no alcohol EVER. 2. Why do you think your advice differed? No idea - some belong to "centers of excellence", some don't. Each surgeon / nutritionist has a method to their madness

    What was your breaking point?

Being diagnosed with Liver stage 3 fibrosis (non-alcoholic). While my hepatologist says that doesn't wake enough people up that things are getting serious with advancing liver disease, it sure woke me up. My initial diagnosis based on Fibroscan was cirrhosis, where a very cold feeling came over me when I heard it, but with a very distended midsection it was quite a bit inaccurate so they did a biopsy (with the biggest effing needle I ever saw, like the size of my forearm) only to reveal that I was stage 3 fibrosis with no cirrhosis. Last reasonable stage of irreversibility of liver damage with immediate changes. While my liver looked fantastic (had compliments about it from nurses, the surgeon, and anesthesiologists) when they took a photo of it on surgery day (thanks to 3 months pre-op and a ton of weight lost, plus obvious dramatic liver shrinking) I'm waiting for an official diagnosis that my liver is in fact better. Won't assume anything until I see my hepatologist soon. I see my case manager+dietitian and my surgeon for a follow up as well next week so might get some feedback about it then too.

Vulnerability, Weight Loss Surgery and Cross-Addictions

Thank you for posting this. I think you address an important but sensitive issue. I would not have expected myself to be plagued by "cross-addiction" issues. I did not think I was "addicted" to food. Ha! I was very under-aware of the degree to which food soothed my stress of life. Now that I don't have food for comfort or calming, I face my stress alone. I have allowed myself to relax and socialize with friends by enjoying a drink in the evenings (I could not eat the foods they ate so I joined them with liquid). I can see that it would be easy for alcohol replace my old reliance on foods. Thank you for reminding me of this.

    Sugar Alchohol

I can't blame it on anyone else. My daughter gets so mad at me. I have gas all the time and I try not to eat gassy foods plus I take Beano. She acts like I do it on purpose. If I purposely ate something with sugar alcohol in it, I might as well say I did do it on purpose. It's not stop for hours after I eat it. I'd like to find a good Protein bar without it. Atkins used to have them, but now it's in their bars too.
  8. Here is my basic list of supplies post-op surgery that I have pulled together from different folks: Thermometer Oxygen pulse oximeter Pain meds Amit nausea meds and alcohol swabs/pads Gasx Puffer for acid reflux Protein shake Protein water - find measuring cups for 2oz Miralax with water premixed Patch aids - multivitamins with iron, biotin, vitamin D3, b12+ Throat lozenges Gastric sleeve notebook logging amount of drinking Nioxin shampoo or tail and mane shampoo with horse on front Dissolvable Tylenol
  9. What does YOUR bari program recommend about alcohol? (My program is very conservative and recommends NO ALCOHOL FOR LIFE [hard to do--but worth it.] Many programs say to wait 6 months; others say one year.) "Stretching" your sleeve is really the least of your worries in the priority of things. I know you said you were "joking" about drinking beers, but in case the joking becomes reality-- Only YOU can answer the question about your choice of using alcohol in your forever WLS life. Maybe also consider that we as WLS patients can be susceptible to an array of transfer addictions (alcohol being one of the biggies) as replacements to our strong "addictions" we've had to food our whole lives. Just be smart and know yourself... Also depends how far out you are from surgery. As others have said, do you really want to "spend" your calories and carbs on alcohol that has no nutritional value? The odds are good that it will affect your weight loss. Some resume drinking immediately after surgery (you see many of them here on BP). Some wait beyond one year after surgery when they have established and fully practiced their new eating habits, and if choosing alcohol in their WLS life is what they want to do, they can plan to occasionally (3-4 times/month) include it in their eating plan. There are TONS of great non-alcoholic, non-carbonated, refreshing summer drinks out there we can create that are fun and WLS-friendly too! I love challenging myself to come up with new and different ones. For instance, I recently found a simple cantalope smoothie recipe made with non-fat Greek yogurt. Ice-cold and so refreshing...filled the glass with summer shaped ice cubes, put in a little drink umbrella, and sat on the patio under a BIG umbrella--Bliss! Just offering a different perspective...

    Using Straws

I have never been told that I can't use a straw.I would suggest that you try drinking with a straw prior to the event and if it doesn't make you uncomfortable go ahead and drink your cocktail through a straw. The only downside is that for some reason drinking alcohol through a straw seems to make you intoxicated quicker - so just be careful!

    Diet Coke

I too was addicted to DC. (Once an addict...) I had to go on a clear liquid diet in September for a colonoscopy and had to go 2 days without DC. The headaches were crazy-painful. I soon realized that I was going through withdrawal from the caffeine. Knowing I was going to have to give it up anyway for the Band, I switched to caffeine-free DC. I don't like it as much, so I've been drinking less and less of it. By 11/10 (my banding date) I'll be off completely. I have spoken to my doc and nurses about carbonation and have researched it online for months. As far as I can tell, one of the biggest reasons to stop drinking DC is that its an old habit. It was something we did while eating the bag of chips and/or the triple Whopper. It was our friend through all of our bad eating habits. Alcoholics should avoid bars, we should avoid DC. (And all the places we used to "sin".) FYI...When I say I was addicted, on a hot day, I could easily go through 4 or 5 52oz DC's from 7-11, during the day, then another 2 liter at night.

    Need Advice

I think you should go. You can put Protein powder in a Water bottle and even add the water to it for the ride. I think it will dissolve fine. Tea bags or crystal light can be added at the brewery. Beer was my choice of alcohol and at 3 months out I still don't think I would enjoy one. I may try a sip once I get the guts for carbonation. Maybe there will be a soup you can have or a mashed potato so you don't feel totally left out. Good luck and enjoy! It sounds like a fun outing! Sent from my iPad using VST

    The games our heads play.

Still waiting for my head to catch up to my stomach sometimes, I work in psych and have worked on our Detox units, so I was never afraid to admit I was to food what an alcoholic is to a drink, 1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 3 and ........... , right now I have to let my tummy control things, my y says "Full, I stop, my head sometimes still says " no finish your plate" " what you don't like your food ?"etc... , so it's a day to day process with me but its getting a lot better very quickly, good luck and I agree with every word u said because I've seen it and heard it countless times, but it wasn't till I spoke those words I got somewhere.....
  14. Guys I couldn't agree more, I would add something else binge eating is not worse than alcoholism, anger issues they are all ways to deal with different kind of stress , but in my opinion find a healthier type of binge , you have plenty of options hiking, bilking and being outdoors. Anyways guys I used to have Six abs and i lost 100 pounds from a 6 month in a boot camp and I maintained it for 3 years but then my fat person inside me came back. You have to love yourself when your fat so after you lose it you will be happy. Im 10 days post vsg and im planning to use this surgery as a tool to get back to the gym and eating healthy. Is it CHEATING or is it a CHOICE?

Yup. And your choices will effect your success. Really, none of my business. But don't ask me to justify your bad choices when you are just a few weeks out from surgery when it can actually do physical damage. It's not "cute" that you chose to drink alcohol a couple weeks out from surgery. I'm not going to pat you on the head and say "There, there" when you won't follow your doctors orders because you are tired of Protein shakes and want to eat solid food before you're cleared to. At least have enough self respect to actually allow yourself to heal before you continue to make the terrible choices that caused you to have the surgery in the first place. After you're all healed up, I could care less about the bad choices you make. I know I'm getting to goal from the choices I'm making.
  16. I'm on my first business trip post surgery, 6 weeks ago. I planned and planned so that I can have max success while I'm gone. To a certain degree I feel like an alcoholic with new-found sobriety. So far, so good. It's hard to get enough Water while on the planes but worked out at the hotel, got in a nice walk, had a salad for dinner, etc. Here's hoping the rest of the week is as easy. What kinds of things have others done to keep on the straight and narrow while traveling? Any tips, tricks?

    7 weeks Post Op!

Congratulations on your great weight loss! I'm also 7 weeks post op, (surgery 10/9/18). So far I'm down 45 lbs since initial visit, 19 since surgery. I'm half way to the goal my surgeon set! My personal goal will probably be lower. I guess I'm not quite as adventurous as you though because I just reached the point of trying "all foods" this week per my plan. Haven't tried alcohol either. I've had a pretty nice recovery too...followed instructions as best I could and am happy with results so far!

    Seriously Messed Up Today :(

Don't beat yourself up. Tomorrow is a new day. In my experience, alcohol allows me to eat anything and everything regardless if restriction. I have to be careful when I decide to drink. So occasionally we have to give ourselves a break. :-)
  19. So, I am one of those people with back problems. Long story short, I've been going to the Dr. for the past 6-8 months and receiving spinal steriod injections as treatment. I have also been taking hydrocodone for the past 6 months or so as pain management. Sometimes 1 a day, sometimes 2-3 depending on pain, sometimes none. I've read a couple war stories about how VSG will be hard on my liver and I'm now worried that the surgery + drug combo may give me trouble. I'm having surgery in Mexico on May 31st and I made sure to list the hydros as part of my current medications. Doctor didn't seem to be too worried. Anyone have any thoughts on this? As a side note: I'm a weekend drinker. Rarely hard alcohol, usually just beer....

    Argument with NP over Coffee

It can be very confusing to know what to listen to and what not to listen to. Yes, we have the internet but it makes things even more confusing with all the different opinions. I guess that is why we trust our information will be helpful from the program that we are in. It too has been suggested that there is no alcohol, but I will make that decision when I see fit. We have the doctors and nurses to advise us, but I guess we are able to make our own choices, good or bad, on our own, for what we see fit . Any piece of information can be torn apart, analyzed or discredited. It is up to each of us to take charge of our health.

    STUCK

Hi :-) I was at a plateau for a month and then started losing again after I added one more day of workouts and did a dietary change. For one month, and my hubby's doing it with me, we cut out alcohol, caffeine, dairy, gluten, corn and soy. I know, it doesn't sound very fun but I dropped five pounds in a week and have kept it off for the following two weeks. I am hoping it has jump started my losing again. We'll see. Losing weight is still tough! Tougher than I thought it would be with the sleeve. I will lose if I stay under 1000 calories per day but as soon as I am up around 1200 - I either stay the same or gain a little. Oh well. It was still worth it. I hope you start losing again soon. All the best.

Poll: would you do it over again?

I would do it over in a heart beat. I not only have lost 75 pounds since banded on Aug 22, 2005 I have learned alot of things about myself. The first being that I did this to myself. I always said that I was heavy and I did not really know why. I truly did not think that I ate that much. Now I know that I truly did. I also realized that there is not a magic pill out there that will just take all the damage away that I have done to myself. I am responsible for myself. I did not put the weight on overnight and I will not take it off overnight. The band is a tool not a sure way to loose weight. Being overweight is not any different from being addicted to drugs or alcohol it is just a different addiction. We have to live with the addiction everyday. I am responsbile for me not my band. Of course my band will let me know if I ate the wrong food. I think alot of people can loose weight but if you don't change your frame of mind and thinking and are able to except yourself and forgive yourself then you will be a skinny unhappy person. Just remember that not all skinny people are happy and not all fat people are unhappy:>

    Sweet Dreams

Every single night since I started the preop diet until now postoperative, I dream about food! They're pleasant dreams! I regularly read a blog written by a woman who was banded a couple of years ago and she wrote about this in one of her posts as well. She said that she had read that drug addicts and alcoholics do this same thing, dream about using, while going through detox. It's just amazing to me that food has such control over my life! I've always thought that I had an addictive personality and my addiction was food. My grandfather was an alcoholic nearly his entire life. Most of the people in his family are overweight. This includes my mom and my aunt along with myself. I truly feel like addiction is a hereditary disease. Does anybody else feel like that? The bad part is there is no getting away from food--- it's ALWAYS there and you HAVE to have it in order to sustain life! I just pray that with the band I'm going to be able to finally develop a healthy relationship. Overall, I'm feeling really good. I was banded 5 days ago. I stayed at the hospital overnight. I haven't been out of the house yet and I'm thinking it would do me a world of good to actually go someplace. I thought about going to the movies but don't think I'm ready to deal with the smell of popcorn just yet! I don't go back to work until January 28th so I've still got time off before truly getting back into a routine. I'm thankful for that because I'm still getting tired pretty easily. I don't see my surgeon until the 30th so I won't be starting mushies until after that but as you can probably guess I'm really EXCITED about the next phase! Hope everyone is doing well!
  24. @@pixystix0116 - I can only share my experience, everyone is the same in that we are all VERY different. So with that said, let me tell you what I did to prep...I walked for at least an hour every day. I went to the gym 3x a week to lift. I was very faithful two weeks before surgery on the diet, got rid of alcohol, caffeine et. al. Surgery day came, because I was in as good shape as I could get. Surgery took less than 30 minutes. I was up and walking within minutes. The first day was rough only because of the dang IV and the drain plug. After both were removed I didn't need any pain killers. Would walk all the time. I had the surgery on a Tuesday. Flew home Friday morning (added an extra day, because I always plan for the worst case). But Saturday I went to an University of Oklahoma football game and my son's fraternity "Dad's Day" celebration. So pain on surgery day 1 - eh 5, after that 1-2. So much better than when my appendix burst. That took nearly six weeks to recover from.
