  1. Hi folks, So I'm wondering if I'm hitting a hormone driven depression patch. I will start this out by saying I've already scheduled an appointment with my GP and have preemptively taken an extra blood tests for my regular Surgeon's appointment to make sure all is well with my other numbers. What happened is a few weeks ago I started feeling really down and it doesn't make sense. I'm active, I have a good social life, friends, work, etc. Of course nothing is perfect. The problem is I started feeling really negative about myself, feeling like I had no point on this earth, why am I here, etc. And I walk around on the verge of tears. This is not like me at ALL. I am a very happy, vibrant person who kind of explodes with energy and happiness most of the time (I know, super annoying, lol!) But now I'm so testy and sad, I'm feeling depressed and crying myself to sleep. Yes I'm lonely, yes I want to find someone to share my life with but that doesn't explain this deep sadness and pain I'm experience - seemingly out of nowhere!! So just looking to see if others of experienced this. I am 9 months post op, I'm following all the protocols on everything, food, water, exercise, vitamins, etc. OH! And the other thing, I don't think I've had my period for almost 2 months! (No, I'm not pregnant unless Jesus 2. 0 is in the works and no WAY would they pick me. lol!) That's the other reason I'm gonna see my doc. Something is up...

    Second day pain

I'm a week out today. I have very little soreness at this point. Most of the pain I experienced days after surgery was because I was taking too big of sips. It's taken me a while to figure out my new sip size!! Walking has definitely helped me. I started back to work on Monday and I try to make a quick walk through our building every hour. Good luck!!
  3. That's awesome! That is really exciting! I'm only a little over 3 weeks post op, I can't wait to see how my journey is going to go!! Congrats again!![emoji898]

Please keep us posted on your surgery. Im 2 tests away from submission and those will be completed this week. I cant wait. Im a little afraid of the gas pains everyone talks about

    Any suggestions....

I'm having the same problem (sleeved 3/26). I finally got a whole protein drink down yesterday, but it has been really slow going. The spasm thing has been awful. I've been trying to do something warm first (tea, broth) to help calm things down, and I'm drinking everything else at room temp.
  9. I am a 5/14ther and I am down 12 pounds. Funny as a woman i started at the same weight but I am 262 today. I feel awesome. My incisions are still sore and my belly is still swollen some but I am walking 40 min a day. Having a hard time with protein. I am tired of the sweet taste. I am really excited about the weeks to come.
  10. Went back to my PCP on Monday...... He was soooo Proud of me! Everything was GREAT... except for my Choleserol.. it's 21 points over normal. He does not want to put me on meds and I don't want to be on them. He suggested more exercise:crying: and for me not to expect a big change in just 3 months, says it would take at least 6 months if I worked at it...... yuck... hate to exercise!! He didn't seem overly concerned with it, because everything else is normal! I go see my sureon on the 12th so will be curious as to what he has to say regarding this too.

    Today is the Day !

Best of luck today with your surgery. It will go perfect. I had that same feeling a week ago for my surgery. It will be over before you know it. Try to relax if you can. I was surprised at how easily I got back moving afterwards. Xx Sent from my SM-G930F using the BariatricPal App

Calories, diabetes, and a clueless doc

I think you are correct re the diabetes information. I would guess your numbers may increase some as you have some carbs once you are months out but I would guess not to the point of going back on meds. I was at 300-400 calories the first month and worked up to 500-600 and stayed at that level until month 6. Then I was only 10 pounds form my goal and worried about losing too quickly (I know that sounds insane right!!) so I purposely increased calories about 100/week to hit around 1000. I worked up towards 1200-1400 around the 10 month mark and now at almost 2 years am around 1500/1600 to maintain. Honestly that seems a little high compared to what others on here say but it keeps me at my comfortable weight. According to the BMi chart I could lose another 10 pounds but I feel like it would make me look too thin and bony ( also crazy to think that would ever be a thought re. my body). If I see my weight trending up 2-3 then I set a goal of 1200 (but usually log around 1300-1400) and that will get me down those 2 pounds within 1-2 weeks. I do think that wont be as easy in another 6-12 months as I am out of the honeymoon phase so I keep logging food/calories religiously. If I see I am low on protein its just a matter of fact thinking ok go get a piece of cheese or drink a glass of milk vs old me would get crackers or chips at the end of the day.
  13. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks post-op and a follow-up with the bariatric team. Purees are coming! Today I saw my GP about my glucose and BP. She confirmed no more diabetes meds (YAY!!!!!) but then she said something odd. She noted that my numbers are excellent on this full liquid diet, but we'd see how I do when my diet "progresses." Now, she's young and clearly still developing her bedside manner (she's awkward) but she insinuated that my diabetes would probably come back and I'd have to go back on meds once I'm on solid food. I guess I thought most docs (even GPs) would know that bariatric surgery has a high likelihood of "curing" diabetes immediately post-op, especially as our weight goes down. Mine was mild to begin with and almost controlled through diet alone. I kinda feel like she threw a bucket of cold water on me. (Getting rid of diabetes was one of my top reasons for surgery.) ANYWAY, I told her I'm consuming about 400-ish calories per day on the FL diet. And I know (I KNOW, I KNOW) we're supposed to concentrate on water and protein at this point, but I'm curious what everyone else's average per day is. Eventually I think we top out around 600-800 with 1,000-1,200 max, but anyone else willing to share where they are in the beginning stages?

    7 Days out and struggling

I felt like this too. For the first 5 days I was miserable. I was throwing up, and couldnt hold anything down. I threw up all the time. Then around day 7, I just woke up and sat on the couch. Something other than just sleeping in my bed. that helped so much. Just take it day by day. I am 5 weeks out today and feel great. Still struggling trying to eat. But its getting there.

    Oh My

I had to take the apin meds right on schedule for the first 3-4 days, then things began to subside. It took about a week for me to be able to sleep on my stomach again, aaahahhhhhhhh that was a relief! I have never been able to sleep on my back. hang in there, it will get better
  16. Today is 3 weeks post band. Up until yesterday, I have been feeling great. I've lost 13lbs and am thrilled. I'm not hungry so that's great. I'm going into my 2nd week of mushies, and all of a sudden yesterday I started feeling awful. Terrible 'sour' stomach, bad heartburn, burping and extreme fatigue. I haven't changed my diet at all and have followed it to the letter. What's going on! ugh

    Hello, I'm new!

Hello 830830...congrats on your recent surgery. One week after surgery..I had a day of. mourning over the lost if my best friend, my consoler, my go to. ...FOOD. On that one day, I wanted to binge ..I wanted my best friend that I loved so much for 40 years. I knew I could use my friend anymore.. I was so sad.. It was day of realism..however, with that mourning..my mind flipped. It was also my day of acceptance..that I had to let go of my best friend. Though I know my friend can come and knock on my door again, I am doing the best to keep her a bay. Every since my sleeve, it is so much easier to jump into what life has to offer..rather than being in a stupor with high fat, high sugar food. I have discovered my cues of head hunger'. I.e. Tiredness', stress , and anxiety. I am very aware when I have head hunger..then I take the time out and evaluate what situation I Have put my day in. Then I slowdown..tell myself that nothing is worth being anxious about ..to,sabotage my health journey. You are going through a transition..and that is an integral part of growth towards health..when I are feeling out of your body. The time to analyze your feelings and write it down..face your new reality. Make sure you are not over exercising. Not eat all your Protein...etc etc. Your body is healing.. So be patient..be kind to yourself.. I am so happy that had that one horrible day. I did not binge..I eat what I was directed to. But it was a day of awakening. So embrace change. Even though it is foreign to you right now.
  18. It took me 3 months to get in to Emory Bariatric for an appointment with the nutritionist, which would be the beginning of my 6 month diet and exercise program. I knew before I went that if I wasn't a BMI of 50 BCBS wouldn't approve the surgery. I purposely gained weight before going over the last 3 months and weighed in at 49.9!!! The account manager that submits the insurance paperwork told me that even if Id been right at 50 they wont approve you unless you lose weight and show you can follow the program for the 6 month requirements, so I wouldn't be approved either way unless BCBS drops the BMI requirement. They only require 40 for Bypass and Band, but I dont want either of those. I left the appointment, after all that time and anticipation, deeply disappointed. Im still going to go through the 6 month process though i hopes that some time in the next 2 years they might change their policy. Im just so upset about the whole thing.
  19. I can totally relate to your frustration too with Highmark BCBS and the 50+ BMI requirement. I live in NY and am hopefully getting the vsg in Buffalo, NY but the insurance is within PA. where my husband works. My BMI is 37 with hypertensiion and diabetes. I knew about the 50 BMI requirement but went through all of the pre-surgery steps anyway. The bariatric coordinator submitted my paperwork for the vsg last week. So, keeping my fingers crossed. When I called Highmark bcbs today to comfirm they had received my paperwork, I was told a predetermination could take from 4-6 weeks!! Oh my god, I hope that is a gross exaggeration. I guess I am preparing myself for being denied. But I dont feel the bypass or lap band are appropriate surgeries for me due to related circumstances I hope I can convincingly express in an appeal letter if it comes to that. I am hoping it might be easier to win an appeal with Highmark since they at least offers the vsg for a certain population as opposed to an insurer that doesnt cover it at all. Good luck to you! Lisa
  20. Ok friends, I'm at week 11 and have only lost 23 pounds. It's extremely difficult to get into the nutritionist at our program. I was supposed to have a 3 month check up with her but it will be February before I can get in to see her. I eat anywhere from 600-900 calories a day. I always get my Protein, (mostly from drinks) and I get my Water. I'm doing 30 minutes of cardio at least 2 days a week and I do a 30 minute routine of free weights 2/3 times a week. Any guesses as to what I'm doing wrong. I do not eat carbs hardly at all. I don't have any issues swallowing and no food has seemed to bother me so far, I've tried everything but steak and fried stuff. Over Christmas I did eat a few pieces of fudge and a few Cookies (no dumping) but after Christmas I haven't eaten any sweets.
  21. Have you had your appointment yet? Just curious what the nutritionist said. I know you posted a few days ago that your doctor is satisfied with your weight loss, but I understand your frustration. I generally get about 900 calories a day, and my nutritionist said that usually she would recommend that I get up to about 1200, but since I was still losing, not to worry about it. But if I stop, try and add some calories. It sounds like you're doing pretty well, although the Christmas cheating wasn't great of course. If you're not already, log everything you eat with something like MyFitnessPal, to make sure your Protein and calories are truly accurate. If we're just estimating, we often get things wrong. If possible, you may want to try and increase your exercise more frequently. It can even be something simple as doing your weight training 6 days a week, with 3 days of upper body, and 3 days of lower. This will make sure you are getting the fat burning benefits pretty much constantly. Good luck!

    Mash foods

Don't eat more than 100 carbs a day. You should be getting anywhere from 65 to 76 grams of protein. They protein drinks are where I get most of my protein. Food alone would never give me enough. I am on the Isopure Zero Carbs protein powder. If you go to Puritan's Pride website, they are the cheapest. If you call them by phone, and ask for a discount, they will give you more of a discount than the internet will. The 3 lb protein powders are $44.99 a piece. The girl over the phone gave me $15 off that and when I ordered a 2nd one, she gave me $10 off of that one. Can't beat that!!!!!!!!!

    Exercise? Diet?

For the first 9 months after surgery my exercise was very basic. I walked 2 times a week, I took stairs instead of escalators. I parked farther away at a store. I tried to add everyday activity and make it part of my life. I did not want to get crazy on any exercise only to get bored of it or pick something too hard or that I did not like. I did not want it to be an obligation to exercise. I lost about 100 lbs in that time but was still over 200. I knew that to get the rest of e way and to ensure I kept muscle mass I would need to start an exercise program. I started to go to the gym. I paid a ton for personal training for 6 months. I started spin class 2 times a week. I now go to gym 4 times a week most of the time and still do 2 days of walking. I take Saturdays off! I did not burn out. I now enjoy he gym. On vacation I went biking every day (for fun!). I went from 50% body fat pre surgery to 36% after losing 100 pounds and now after the gym, it have lost 25 more in 6 months and my body fat is 24%. So in the beginning do Something. Stay active. As you lose you can add more exercise. Make it something you enjoy. Something fun. If you hate exercise now just start by walking a few minutes a day and challenge yourself to add a couple minutes a day. Your body needs to move even a little. It will make you feel great. I promise!
