Periods (women only please)
catwoman7 replied to Ngotsleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes - it's related to the surgery. It affects your hormones. A lot of women experience screwed up menstrual cycles (and/or have weird moods) for the first few weeks or months after surgery. Estrogen is stored in fat cells, and the theory I've read is that it's released during rapid weight loss (don't know if the latter part of that is true, but it IS stored in fat cells, and lots of women DO have hormonal issues after surgery because of it). It'll eventually stabilize and things will be back to normal. I don't know the answer to your second question, though. -

Many women have messed up periods post surgery. I had breakthrough bleeding for several weeks (on the pill but not on period days of the cycle) in the beginning and a few days out of The next couple months. It took a few months but it went back to normal. -

My doc here does a 2 week intensive slimming diet with a product like Slimfast. The doctor also said that it's 6 weeks off work but I figured that was because of the different work regulations. -

Had my surgery on Monday 1/25 and I had a 2 week pre op diet of 2-3 shakes and a protein and vegetables for lunch. Sugar free Jello for desert if needed and 64 oz water. And clear liquids day before. I think the pre op diet is a great way to start getting yourself into the mindset of you aren’t going to be eating a lot… I lost 16 pounds on the pre op. As for time off the dr is giving me 6 weeks because of the physical job of being a lineman. It’s only the beginning of day 3 and so far so good!!! Good luck with your surgery. -
Hi all, Hope you are all doing well. I am 5 weeks post-sleeve and take the pill as contraception. I take this back to back and don't usually allow myself a period (this is totally safe). For the past few days I have been experiencing heavy painful bleeds, do you think this has anything to do with the sleeve or weight loss? Does the sleeve have any bearing on how medication (the pill in this case) is absorbed by the body? I would appreciate any help/ advice! Thank you!!

My preop diet is 1 week of full liquids. There are also some things I was told to cut 2 weeks out (NSAIDS, caffeine, alcohol. . . ) This varies for my doc based on BMI. I start my liquid diet tomorrow. I work outside sales. I drive around all day. My Surgery is on a Thursday, I go back to work the following Wednesday. My doc said some go back to work after 4 days. I am getting the sleeve done. -

I was a bit bummed out last week. I had to start my liquid diet on thec14th and my birthday was the 17th. So no cake or dinner for me for the 1st ever in my life; booooo diet. I didn't want to wait but I should've scheduled February. I was scared this new strain of covid might get worst and close the hospital`s from non evasive surgeries. -
We all lose at our own rate. Some are slow losers, others fast. Both are fine. Your weight loss seems great so far @rgwtwins. About 40lbs over 10 weeks is about 4 lbs a week. That’s pretty damn good. Celebrate those pounds you’ve lost. Yes, stalls can be damn frustrating but they do happen & unfortunately can occur a few times. Usually a stall will break in its own time without you doing anything different. If you’re worried, meet with your dietician just to ensure you are not missing something. Sometimes a small tweak will kick start your loss again especially if it’s persisting for more than 4 weeks. Yes @Cheryl A, the higher your starting weight the faster you tend to lose at first but it will slow. If your medical team is happy with your rate of loss, enjoy your weight loss too. It’s probably a bit of a shock but you’re doing well.

Lunch idea after gastric bypass
Arabesque replied to Jennifer ortiz's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree with @philannony - just take whatever you’re making for yourself for dinner. I was & still am a big cook it myself person & I still spend time ‘bagging’ up single serve portions of whatever I cook to put in the freezer. (Actually just bagged up three serves of a chicken & lentil soup I made last night.) Before work, I’d just select a frozen portion & then zap it in the microwave at work. Easy. Also handy for those nights you don’t feel like cooking. My freezer is usually full of serves of soup, rissoles (meat balls), chicken tenderloin, lamb cutlets, savoury mince, corned beef, etc. Plenty of variety so you don’t get bored eating the same meal for lunch & dinner. In those first months, mince dishes, soups & casseroles were my go to as they always included some vegetable. Later chicken tenders were easy (just made a simple salad & tossed in the chicken at lunch). Also took cheese sticks, I also found a great frittata recipe. (I swap around the ingredients salmon instead of tuna & various veg.) Make it in a tray pan & slice it into portions or in muffin tins. Always a couple of serves of that in my freezer too. All the best. -
whoa! Im at 12 weeks just behind you and im down 61lbs! Thats sounds alot compared to you. It concerns me this is too quick! My dietician hasnt said anything negative about it. But i started at 317lbs. im guessing thats why its faster? Cause im more heavy? I still cant make my 64oz of water Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

I have a surgeon who requires the strict pre-op diet. I fear my surgery getting postponed due to an insurance battle happening in GA. (The thought of prolonged protein shakes makes me nervous.). You raised an interesting question about time off of work. My doctor’s said one to two weeks. I would love to do one but worry about lack of energy. -

Yea the pre diet is so different between doctors some are strict with 2 weeks liquid like mine 🤬😂 some have protein shakes for 2 meals then a lean meat and veggie for dinner and some none until the day before like yourself. As far as work I am taking the full 4 weeks off. I have a sit down job but I am going to use that time to focus on healing and just on myself overall, something I haven’t done in many years. -

Thanks, J'anna, I did take another covid test and should get the results in a day or two. Still very exhausted. I had my first follow-up with the surgeon's office today. They were pleased with my current status. They feel the sore throat was caused by the endotracheal intubation tube which is common. They also felt I am so exhausted due to not taking in needed protein. I have been doing the protein clear drinks and today they wanted me to restart the chocolate protein drinks as they have more protein content. I have been trying but just taking two sips is making me so full and wanting to cough it up due to how think they are. I am to do the shakes for one more week then move to mushy food. Right now I'm mixing some water with shakes to cut the thickness. I will keep on keeping on hopefully it will get better each day. -

I had sleeve surgery five years ago. Went from a high of 392 down to 315. I am 6’7” but still to heavy. Since Covid I’m back to 345. I know I need to shed pounds. My cholesterol is high and I am pre diabetic. On Thursday I have my Bypass surgery. Needless to say, im nervous. I know rare but I worry about complications but I believe complications from my weight outweigh it. Anyone else having surgery this week? -
I also had a lot of the same issues that you're having. A few days after surgery I started having pain on my right side of my back then it went to left side.I assume its gas. It subsided after a few days. I wasn't given a binder but I had one from a previous surgery. It's a lifesaver. It took me 2 weeks out before I was able to lie down in bed. Good luck on your healing.

you're losing a lot faster than I ever did. and as far as the four weeks, you're most likely in a stall. They usually last 1-3 weeks, but a month is not unheard of.
-
Thank you. I agree it’s a lot. I am just frustrated that it’s going on 4 weeks without losing.
-
Are you listening to yourself? "I've only lost between 39-41 pounds in 10 weeks." That's FANTASTIC!!!! Have you ever lost that much before in that short amount of time? Doubt it. The process is working. Stalls happen. Exercises affect muscle mass. You've got this. Don't worry . . it's all good. Keep up the good work!!!
-
I’ve only lost between 39-41 in total including pre op. HW 256, SW 244, CW 215-217. I had a stall at 6 weeks and also gained 2 pds. I went from 215 to 217. Since then I have been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds. I do get my protein in but struggle with water intake. I average about 50 oz a day. My dr put my calories at 800-1000 a day, protein at above 80. Nut told me not to be concerned about fat or carbs at this point. I just started to work out so no muscle gain at this point. I am very frustrated. Anyone have a similar issue or any advice to give ?????
-
Yeah, after the infamous Week 3 stall, stalls are sporadic and specific to the individual. It's normal, even though it's frustrating, especially when it's 30 days or longer, but keep focused on doing the right things such as tracking food, getting in your water, getting in the protein, and getting some exercise.
-
Anybody else started at over 500 lbs?! Currently 9 weeks post op VSG and down 85 lbs! When did you notice your body changing?
-
You can experience many stalls as you’re losing so you’re likely experiencing another one now. Frustrating I know. If it persists more than 4 weeks, check in with your dietician. Sometimes a small tweak to your diet can kick start your loss & also ensure you are still following your plan (it’s easy to get a little complacent as the months go by cause we think we have it all under control). A change to your exercise program (frequency, duration or activity) can also shake the stall. Good luck.

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)
Arabesque replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was never given a limit for carbs. Just advised to keep my intake low so avoid as possible. (Though I was able to have rolled oats from purée.) I was told to consider fruit & vegetables not as a ‘carb’ but an important source of fibre & essential vitamins & nutrients that were to be eaten after protein if I was able. Plus most veg are pretty low in carbs. Fruit is a little more but still you can’t eat much those first few months. I started fruit at around the 2 month mark I think. As an afternoon snack but not every day - watermelon (fluid content was a bonus) & strawberries to begin. Added other choices as I progressed. Now I have blueberries every day at breakfast & another serve of fruit (various) a couple of times a week. Fruit is my sugar fix. 😉 My biggest challenge with fruit is eating it too quickly - all that juicy goodness - then I have discomfort & on some occasions my restriction kicks in which is damn annoying. I started vegetables from soft food - carrots, celery, onion, tomato & mushrooms in slow cooked soups & stews. Then I added a couple of steamed green beans, cabbage or a cauliflower floret with dinner once on solid food. Now I eat a decent serve of whatever vegetables I want for lunch & dinner.
