  1. I do not kow as I am not there yet, BUT they want your liver to be soft and pliable to move it out of the way, you must stop all alcohol as it produces the liver to become stiff,, this is a major life change, be weeks before you can drink again.
  2. I just found out that I was approved for LapBand surgery yesterday. I am excited, I'm nervous, I'm anxious, I'm happy, so many different things are going on! I don't have a surgery date yet, but it looks like my office is booking into late July. Some questions: My office requires a two week liquid diet that I am dreading. I supposed it gets better as the days go on. Are there any helpful tips from anyone that is on the liquid diet to make it less... annoying? I know it is necessary for my liver to shrink and for me to be in the best shape I can be by surgery, so I guess that's a plus. I am 270 lbs. If I consume 800-1000 calories a day (which is required) how much can I anticipate to lose in 2 weeks? My BMI is 40.2 and I am a woman, which I'm sure will have an effect on my progress. I go out to eat and for drinks (coffee or alcohol) with my friends a lot. Of course I will not be consuming alcohol or huge meals, but how do I deal with social gatherings while on the liquid diet? I'm sure I'll htink of my questions later. If you had to do a two week liquid diet before your lap band surgery and are around my weight, please share your experience with me! Thanks

    Finding a therapist

Does your insurance cover mental health? If so, you could start by looking at who is covered on your plan. That's what I did. Then I googled them to see if they had a website and read up on them to see what kinds of things they specialized in. The one I picked didn't necessarily deal with food issues, but she's so good that she's zoned in on what is causing my food issues...depression, loneliness, etc...and we're focusing on that. She said people use all kinds of things to deal with their "issues", we use something to dull the pain...alcohol, drugs, excessive exercising...mine is binge eating. All that to say...even if someone doesn't "specialize" in eating disorders, it doesn't mean they can't help you with it. Another thing you could do...if you feel comfortable...is tell your surgeon that you didn't really click with the therapist he used for your pre-surgery consult. Ask if he could recommend someone else. Or ask someone else in the office (nutritionist, nurse, etc) who they would recommend besides the original therapist. Last option is word of mouth. Ask around. Ask those close to you if they know of someone, you would be surprised to know how many people around you have seen a therapist/shrink. Good luck! You're making the right step...
  4. Ditto, Ditto, Ditto! I have told my clients I would be out and told them why. Only one client asked me why I was getting it done and not losing the weight on my own because I had already lost 20 lbs on my own. I explained my reasons and that it wasn't meant for everyone. She was very slender so she never experienced the weight battle herself. When we were done talking, she understood. People may not agree but it's not their choice to make, they can be understanding though. I think surgery gets such a bad reputation and people think that WLS patients take the "easy" way out when it is not the case at all. Like you, I love being able to educated others and hopefully inspire others to better themselves. Weight, Drugs, alcohol, etc, whatever you feel you need help with, you should do. You should never be ashamed to better yourself and this is what I have to do to become a more healthy individual. This is the road I took, it's NOT for everyone but this is what I wanted to do to better myself. I have recieved so much support from family, friends and my clients that it just confirms that I am making the right decision.
  5. Thanks for your help- the thing I am having a hard time wrapping my head around is needing a good amount of food to be full. I'm talking less than a portion at a restaurant- but more than my "fixed" wife. My wife suggests to start cutting back this last week. I am not doing my last meals- I just want to eat, be full enough to carry on with work or play... My Breakfast and lunch are so on plan, but if I don;t have dinner by 4 pm, I am a raving hunger maniac. So I have a snack- on plan, but then I still need/want(?) a dinner- 4 oz. Protein, veggies and a little starch. (program) so advise me- I am not depressed- and have handled stress issues- My alcohol intake is also none-- now that Grad parties are over. just trying to figure this out.
  6. I have a mutual friend with a lady that had lapband last year and I see her out quite a bit. She says you just have to alternate Water with the alcohol and make sure you don't drink on an empty stomach. Alcohol isn't a huge loss to me, but I am a big friend type person and can't totaly miss out on all of that! I plan to still go out and just make better food choices. Thanks everyone for the input!

    Coffee and alcohol

Just curious why you cant drink de-caf coffee? My surgeon said no caffine/no alcohol for 6 months. So far I have been good!
  8. I've done a lot of research on how the body adjusts and adapts. I knew that I would not ever be "dieting" for life, but a lot of that has to do with me recognizing my weaknesses. I can also say that I had a couple of major driving forces behind me getting to goal quick, and then figuring out maintenance once I got there. 1) with the complications I had, my husband was deployed and I had to "get better", I cared about my weight loss numbers, but my main goal was to be healthy upon his return 2) We wanted a baby 3) I had the band, and it failed miserably even though I worked the crap out of that thing so failing with the sleeve was not even an option nor did I allow those thoughts to enter my mind. Rum/cokes are my arch nemesis, and I did see a true gain over the holidays because of copious partying, alcoholic beverages and every type of party food you can imagine. BUT, I didn't go back to dieting or even low carbing after my 3 month long binge, I just went back to my normal eating routines, and BAM lost those pounds pretty quickly.

    do's and dont's

Stole this from another post ! My Dr. gave me a great little book that has some great information that I thought would be helpful and thought I would share some of them. Don'ts to Drinking * Don't Drink Carbonated beverages (my dr says never, but ask your Dr.) * Don't Drink Alcohol. (First year, ask your Dr.) * Don't Drink coffee. (First Year ask your Dr.) * Don't Drink Caffeninated Beerages (first Year) * If on Iron Suppliment don't take with milk. * Don't Drink with meals (wait 30 mins before and after meals) * Don't Drink your Calories * Don't Drink Protein shakes like Ensure, Carnation Instant Breakfast unless your Dr. Tells you to do so. * Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink Water. by that time you have already lost two or more cups of your total body water. Do's * Do drink a minimum of 64 oz of water a day or more. * Do drink water as your beverage of choice * Do drink herbal teas * Do Sip frequently * Do drink diluted drinks such as crystal light on limited basis * Do drink chicken, beef and veggie broth * Do use splenda instead of other sweetners to sweeten beverages * Do increase your water intake on hot days and when exercising * Do increase your water intake if constipated

    Sabotage....

I don't think its fair to ask him to change his eating habits because you have to. ^^^^ I disagree with this statement on a few levels. She's not asking him to change is habits completely, she's asking him to not do it in excess around her. Personally, I think it's time to have a "come to Jesus" talk with the hubby because he is either the biggest jerk ever (which I doubt) or is just not full comprehending what he's doing. <<<much more likely By the logic that he shouldn't have to change his habits, you're saying it would be ok for him to constantly smoke in her presence and buy her cigarettes and offer her cigarettes if she were trying to quit smoking? Would it be ok for him to bring her home wine and drink beer all night while he watched tv if she were a recovering alcoholic? Of course that wouldn't be considered socially acceptable, so why is his overindulgence in food and always throwing it in her face more acceptable? If he wanted a stuffed crust pizza that badly, he could have gone out, especially considering the time frame. No, the family shouldnt have to give up everything, but there are simple manners of decency and love involved.

    worries

Congrats on the 90 lb loss, that is amazing. It's good that you caught the problem at a 10 lb gain! I would first cut out the alcohol and wrong things first. Then if that wasn't enough, go back to basics. That should be all that is necessary. If not maybe basics with protein shakes to replace 1 meal a day. I don't think it's necessary to go too extreme. I also don't think you've stretched out your sleeve. How much dense protein, like chicken, can you eat? That is a good test to see what your sleeves capacity and size is. Everyone even fairly early out can take in a lot of liquid. Try just chicken or meat and I am sure you will find you still have lots of restriction. Good luck!!

    worries

Hi everyone, I had my sleeve in Aug last year and have since lost 90 lb. Since January I ave gained 10lb. I now this is due to eating the wrong things and drinking too much alcohol but it worries me that I still think like a fat person. I still obsess about food and want to eat even if i'm not hungry. I still do get hungry and get anxious when even a little bit hungry, just like i did before surgery. I'm also worried that my stomach may have stretched. How far can it stretch? If I spend a week on slimfast, will that hhelp me get on the right track, assuming I can stick with it. I feel I have let myself down big time.

    Vit B 1 low

It's normal for doctors to require you to take B1 supplements for 90-180 days after surgery. However, it's very rare to have a thiamine deficiency but it can be very serious. Get started on B1 capsules daily. Increase your grain consumption (whole), decrease alcohol and sugar consumption.

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

I have been eating a lot of beans, but the doctor would REALLY like me eating real foods and not liquids. That was the entire reason I had this surgery! As for the sugar...HELL NO....I have not had anything that has sugar in it. I will see what it feels like to dump once I get to maintenance (which should be around the end of July/mid August). I will really only try to sugar (in the form of BBQ sauce and Teriyaki sauce) so I know what the start of it feels like in case I eat something at a restaurant and feel it coming on and stop eating. The closest I have come to dumping is getting a light headed feeling when I eat too much sugar alcohol. They really aren't joking when they say that your taste buds totally change when you have gastric bypass. I really have no desire to eat anything sweet. I have some sugar free fudgecicles but I don't eat them very often. SF Pudding makes me sick and sometimes even yogurt is too sweet. The only other way that I would eat (or attempt to eat) sugar is if I start getting too far below goal weight. The doctor is a little worried about that possibility seeing that I started out at such a low BMI for bypass. I am already halfway to goal and I am only one month out of surgery. I am starting to fit back into some of my clothes and had a really good run/walk this morning. I'm STARTING to feel like a normal human being again. Well it is be time...just wish this basketball game would hurry up and get over...with the Heat beating the Mavericks of course.

    Alcohol?

No carbonation! You will just feel like complete crap if you drink carbonation. I have enough gas and burping without it. I'd wait on alcohol till you are on full solid foods. I do it now and then.. but it's not usually worth the calories.

    Alcohol?

My doc said no alcoholic beverages at all for at least 4 months, and then nothing with carbonation.

    Gallbladder issue

I had my surgery 5 years ago, and just this year had to have my gallbladder removed. I had small persistant issues starting around a year after my surgery. This year, my gallbladder threw a freaking temper tantrum, and I got hit with about 4 gallbladder attacks in about a 2 month timespan. Oh my good gracious, I can't tell you how painful those suckers are! I have never been in so much pain in my entire life. After the first one, they did a ct scan and found a whole mess of stones in there. They suggested I schedule sugery to remove the gallbladder, but I was stubborn. After being hospitalized for the 3rd time, they finally sort of forced the surgery on me. My suggestion: if they find gallstones, just get the surgery. Since having it removed, I feel a thousand times better. Only side effect I've noticed is that I can't handle my alcohol as uhhhhh gracefully as I could before.

    Alcohol?

Didn't your doctor tell you that you shouldn't have any carbonation? Mine is quite strict about it. You certainly shouldn't be consuming alcohol - even in limited quantities in my opinion - while on your post op liquid diet.

    Alcohol?

So I'm the at Busch tour in STL, beer is everywhere...I'm on my liquid diet right now...I've taken a few sips from family and stuff, I feel fine (just burping) but is that ok to do? I'm not saying I'm drinking an entire cup, just like 20 sips on a 3 hour tour
  21. I loved food too. It was my best friend and my worst friend at the same time. I could eat anything and everything and in mass quantities. Do I miss it? Hell no. It's there for one reason only now -- to live. I don't obsess about it, I don't care about it. Yes, I enjoy a good meal when I have it. But that's it. IT'S BEING NORMAL. And frankly, it's wonderful. I get to enjoy the food that I eat, but after I'm done, I'm truly done -- mentally and physically. So, you will still get to enjoy food (maybe not right away, but when you're down the road a bit) but just not in the mass quantities or the number of times you currently eat. I can eat anything now (I'm almost 9 mos. post op) -- there are somethings that I don't eat because I'm reluctant to try them (alcohol being one), but I'm sure I'll get over that hurdle someday too. But really, I can eat ANYTHING. The thing is, is that I really don't WANT to eat everything like I used to. For instance, yesterday, we went to a BBQ -- I ate steak and salad. I was happy. I didn't really have room or the desire for dessert, so I had coffee. I was happy. For dinner we went out, and I had steak again (it was a steak day) -- I was really really happy. I came home and made us all a low carb dessert with Jello pudding and real whipped cream -- it was great, but I couldn't finish it all. So I didn't feel deprived, I ate what I wanted and then stopped when I was full. And that's what will happen to you too. Hope that helps!

    Coffee and alcohol

my surgeon said no coffee no alcohol after surgery !! that's it i had de-caffeinated 2 weeks post op it went well but tasted bad i started coffee again 2 months post op, since i just need it otherwise id sleep all day i think am fine ,, just have to drink more Water
  23. Yayyyy Valentina, so happy for you!!! It's a good thing you got a quick date, less time to worry. You will do great! And there may be some sour type protein powders, I think it may be the syntrex nectars?? You can google it but seems Roadside Lemonade sounds familar. Or is that an alcoholic drink? Haha. They've got some kinda lemonade. Good luck and I am sure you will keep us updated. :hippie:
  24. I have the occasional margarita and have no problems. But I have to agree, it does hit me a whole lot faster than it did before. There isnt near as much fat to absorb the alcohol anymore.

    its so hard..

I'd say you need to examine the situation you're reporting: If you're pb'ing, chances are you don't need a fill. If your band was looser than it is now, you wouldn't have swallowing issues. So if you ARE having swallowing issues, stuck episodes, and so forth, you probably have plenty of restriction. If you're exercising enough (to your own satisfaction) then that's not it. You're burning plenty of calories. The things i see that you may want to closely examine are: How much Water are you drinking a day? You should be drinking about 64 ounces (or more) per day. How much sleep are you getting daily? Proper sleep quality can have a big effect on how your weight loss goes. Where do your calories come from? You mention broccoli and fish, but what ELSE are you eating? Is it high fat, fried foods, sweetened foods, and such? Are you snacking or eating food you know isn't right? Soft drinks or alcohol? If so, your nutrition needs to be corrected. And most important: How many calories a day are you eating? Are you eating enough calories? If you're existing on a starvation diet, say less than 600 calories a day, your body may be hanging onto every calorie you're putting in your mouth, because it thinks you're starving it. Sometimes, if everything else is right, just raising the calories a bit is enough to really help. In my case, the 800-1000 calories a day my Nutritionist recommended wasn't working for me. i bumped it up to 1200-1500 calories a day, and the weight started falling off. My surgeon's office recommends eating about three ounces of Protein every three to four hours. if you do that, your blood sugars will stabilize, and you won't have as many highs and lows every day. Once your metabolism levels out, the excess weight will go away. And finally, have you discussed all this with your surgeon's team? If it's been a year and you've only lost five pounds, you owe it to yourself to go see them and sort out what you're either not doing, or what you're doing wrong. Has your band possibly slipped? You paid a lot of money for your band, and you deserve to have it work correctly. if it's working as it should, then you need to change how you're using it, to make the most of it. Good luck! Dave
