RNY 21 years ago looking to revise
Karen Dean replied to Karen Dean's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Sunnyway I shall watch with interest how you get on post op! I am just researching at the moment to see what my options are. I have been in touch with a surgeon who wants to do the tests you mentioned, which should tell me where I am and what can be done. Thats so sad that your bypass failed and you had to wait so long to find a resolution to it. Mine was successful until I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos and then all the running I did and exercise just stopped. Depression hit and bam regain!! Like you I have tried many diets of the past few years and they work for around 21lbs and then nothing. Not sure if its because of the lack of movement or an altered digestive system. Who knows?! As we both know weight is a very complex and frustrating subject. Good luck for the 21st, let me know how you get on. -
Surgery is on Monday and I'm scared.
Guest replied to TaylorA's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
First off, imagine how many patients they have every single day that go under and come right out. Even if something goes 'wrong' while you're under, where in the world would you rather be than on a literal operating table if that happened? You'll be fine! Next time someone asks 'what if you die', show them how many years obesity takes off our lives. In fact, depending on your weight right now, you're more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke due to obesity than from anaesthesia. And still that somehow doesn't even cross people's minds when they make comments like this. You decided this for you. To live longer, better, happier. Congratulations on making that choice. You're much, much stronger than you think. -

getting closer--- met with dietitian and insurance update
gabbykittyvsg posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I met with the dietitian yesterday. She said she was surprised when she first saw me on her schedule because I just saw her a few weeks ago for the annual visit, but then she saw my surgeon's notes. We talked a bit about how I felt about going through this process again, then we got down to business of talking about the post op diet progression. Things have changed since my sleeve 7 years ago, the diet progression is slower, which I think is a good thing. Last time the progression of full liquid to soft was rather abrupt in my opinion, but this time I'll be gradually thickening the texture of food over a few months. She mentioned baby food as an option and that got me thinking, they sell small blenders for this purpose. I found one that was used only once on Facebook Marketplace. I got it for $20, it's $60 on Amazon. My surgeon drew me a picture of the surgery and so did my dietitian who went into a lot more detail about a few specifics of how food passes through a RNY pouch vs a sleeve and how/why dumping happens. Her drawing and explanation made so many things click. I'm more determined than ever to make the most of this opportunity. Yes, I'm doing it for severe GERD, but I'd love to lose another 20-30 pounds too. I know most of the weight loss will come during the first few months when food is very limited. I called my insurance company and the rep I talked to was super nice and answered all my questions. She confirmed they got the request for preauthorization from my clinic. I'll know before Christmas!!! My insurance is generally super speedy so I'm thinking I'll know about approval in the next week or so. It can't come fast enough. Despite meds and better eating, I've had a few rather nasty attacks of reflux. -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

Hang in there SummerTimeGirl! Sounds like you are doing all the right things and then some. I swear, the more I read about weigh set points, I truly think you [your body] is in one right now. It just needs time to let go of the weight range it is in right now. It will happen! 💕 https://www.healthline.com/health/set-point-theory -
I had gastric bypass 4 days ago still on clear liquids until the 22nd I'm still in some pain this is so different from the sleeve I had 2 years ago. I'm not hungry cuz I'm tired of broth I'm getting my protein in as much as I can. If I knew 2years later after my gastric sleeve that I would have to have this bypass surgery I don't know If I would have done it. I lost a lot of weight with the sleeve surgery this bypass surgery I feel like it's hard to get energy I didn't feel like this with the sleeve Sent from my SM-A015AZ using BariatricPal mobile app

I had my gastric bypass in 2000, I was one of the first to do it in the UK. 21 years later and some non weight related illness I have regained half of the weight I lost. I was 300lbs and went to 140lbs. It's only in the past 5 years the regain has really started. I am looking at having a minimizer ring fitted. Has anyone here done this? What was the outcome. Is it like day one after your original surgery? Any information would be greatfully received. Thanks x -
Surgery 2nd Sep just found out im pregnant !!!!
learn2cook replied to Vicks1990's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There were 2 friends of mine that this happened to, both had healthy, successful babies. Follow your plans from docs, try to get them to team up. Both friends were discouraged from gaining weight during pregnancy and took extra prenatal supplements. Everyone turned out fine. They also were encouraged to eat more veggies and fruits than most of us. You’ve got this. Congratulations! -
Exactly, which is why the op and many others feel like this. My observations and experience on this journey has lead me to believe to succeed long term with this surgery you need to be the type of person who would succeed with normal diet and exercise programs and if you can do that why would you need surgery. Surgery is a kick start caused by the early after surgery effects where you physically cant eat and your body is forced to survive on a low calorie diet. But once the body heals and you can start bringing in "normal" foods that is where you need will power and commitment and this is where it fails as some of us are lead to believe that the portion control side of things is what looses the weight. I have been very surprised by the amount and types of foods i can actually eat ! I feel that perhaps the op may experience the same. Its not the fault of the op for being disappointed and to have feelings of being misinformed. My dietian told me prior to surgery and again after surgery that I could eat as I did pre surgery and loose weight because of the portion control side of things.... false. My surgeon told me AFTER surgery at my 3 month post op appointment that the effects of the sleeve last 18 months to 2 years at the most and what happens after that is entirely up to you. So yes if you look at it like that why are we cutting pieces off a perfectly healthy vital organ for short term benefit. Studies now show that gut health plays a huge roll in weight control among other modern health issues so maybe that is another solution that should be looked at before surgery as I dont even know if we are able to do what it takes to get out gut health right after surgery. That is something i plan to look into.

Nervous for the next stage!
ShoppGirl replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was nervous about every single step or stage I went through. It all went smoothly though and I was fine. You definitely won’t start gaining either unless you eat too many times a day or you eat super calorie dense foods. -
I have heard people on here say they were slower losers and they kept losing weight up till the two year mark. You have not failed. You can still do this.
-
The surgery is merely a tool. If there was a magical surgery they could keep us from eating too much or having cravings or all of the things that lead up to our situations, they would need to be operating on our brain, not our stomachs. Even with a small stomach, there is nothing that would keep a person from eating ten meals a day If they put them really close together. And, even with a smaller capacity, you can put some high calorie stuff through there! Think of all of the soft foods that don’t even fill you up and just slide right by. You can put a lot of calories through your body. At the end of the day the surgery is a tool to help you on your journey. But there is a lot of other work that Hass to be done. Most surgery programs recommend support groups, and other practices to help you get that part down. But successful weight loss has everything to do with changing the way you relate to food. All the surgery does is help you to feel full faster - assuming you eat protein-dense foods. I’m really sad if your Program led you to believe that this would fix everything. That’s just not the way it is.

you can still lose weight because you'll still have the restriction - the only issue is the hunger suppression may not be as strong at this point. hair loss usually doesn't start right away - for a lot of people it starts around three months out, but it can be even later. Mine was months 5-9. I remember reading somewhere that if it doesn't start by about six months out, you're probably not going to experience it - but you're still in that range, so...

November Surgery Buddies!!!
Tgregorski replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey everyone!! Just weighed myself and I am officially down 40 pounds since I started this. Back in July I had the talk with my GP and told him enough was enough I am contacting a surgeon and getting help with my weight. At that point I weighed 254 (I'm 5'1"). Had my surgery on Nov 2nd and as of this morning I was 214.4 so 40 down, 84 more to my ultimate goal. 😁 -
Nervous for the next stage!
Arabesque replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Plans are different & so are you. Some do stay on a stage longer because they’re just not ready to move on & that’s ok. Make your first purées really sloppy & runny or go for thick soups at first so you get used to that denser, thicker texture vs a liquid. Don’t give up on a food you struggled with. Our tummies can be a bit fussy & temperamental at first. Or sometimes things just taste disgusting. Try it again in a week or two & then in another week or so if need be. You’ll even find your tummy suddenly says no way to something you’ve eaten regularly but is fine with it again two days later. I used to say my tummy was like a petulant two year old child throwing random temper tantrums. That tightness across your chest is your restriction. You don’t usually start to feel until you’re on more solid food. It’s a signal you’ve eaten too much, too fast or eaten something too dry or too coarse, etc. You’ll work out your triggers - it’s a bit of trial & error. Stalls happen. The first one often is about week 3 +/-. Think of it as your body just needing a break. It’s been pretty stressed & needs to shut down for a 1-3 weeks. It does not mean you’re doing the wrong thing or failing … unless you’ve wildly gone off plan. It’s possible you’ll experience more than one stall along the way. You won’t put on weight by starting on the next stage unless you suddenly start eating huge portions (pretty darn impossible with your small tummy unless you put in a lot of effort to stretch it) or making poor food choices. You won’t be consuming more calories than your body needs to function. That’s the only way you’ll put on weight. And I’m not talking about our normal fluctuations ( fluid, constipation, life, etc.) As long as your general weight loss trend is downwards you’re doing great. It’s ok to go at your own pace. You’ll do fine. -
Aagghhhh why am I so hungry all the time
Arabesque replied to SleeverSk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We were always told a rumbling tummy or hunger pains meant you were hungry - not always true. Like how we had to eat everything on our plate - we don’t. Hunger pains can be caused by too much stomach acid. Do you still take a ppi/esomeprazole? If not give some a try & see if that helps. My tummy makes squelching noises & whines every day. My doctor told me it’s just a signal my body doing what it’s supposed to: digesting food & is nothing to do with hunger. What do you mean by wanting to feel ‘satisfied’ after eating? Often our old ‘satisfied’ level was a lot of food or until we felt better. Are these old feelings & ways of eating influencing how you feel now? There’s a difference between eating until you’ve had enough & eating until you're full, & whether you need that next bite or just want it. Just throwing some ideas to think about out there. They may not even be helpful to you at all. Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You’ll be at your goal before you know it. Whoo hoo! -
yes! I'm 63 (will be 64 in March). I had my bypass August 11. So far have lost 70 lbs and I feel 200% better. I was in so much pain walking, moving around, even sleeping I don't think I realized it until the weight started to come off. I get around so much easier and have more energy. Sometimes the weight loss seems to be VERY slow, but I was warned by my surgeon that I would only lost 6 to 8 lbs a month (after that initial period), so I knew what to expect. I have started to notice some hanging skin in areas - my upper arms and the backs of my thighs which is a little spooky, but I wouldn't trade how I feel for anything. Hope it's going well for you!

Glad to hear it's helped with the aches and pains involved with getting older! I hope to get a date In January-I have one more appointment before I can start to nag them, lol. The only other thing I worry about is time released meds. I was told that those would shoot through my system without being absorbed. Have you heard anything similar?
-
I had to crush several meds - for high triglycerides and high cholesterol. I take a thyroid supplement and 10mg lisinopril for high blood pressure (which I don't think I have anymore, actually!). So I hope at my next doctor's appointment they'll do away with the blood pressure med and maybe the cholesterol ones too. Basically they just told me if the medication (pill) was large I'd have to crush it. I've been discouraged because the weight loss REALLY slowed down. I essentially plateaued all of February, and just in the last 2 weeks started to lose again. I've lost 85 lbs since the surgery. I want to lose 50 more! Good luck! Keep posting!

Lifestyle Changer replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to wait until 3:weeks to have puréed. I was on liquids and then full liquids so that my stomach would have a chance to heal and adjust to what I was taking in. 5:days post op for puréed foods just seems really too fast to be introducing puréed foods to your stomach. In my opinion I don’t think your stomach is ready to handle a big change to food that quickly. I’m sorry if my opinion may upset you. Bit through my weight loss program including working with my nutritionist this is not a good choice at only 5 days post op. -

Before and After Pics
Lifestyle Changer replied to Roserie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first photo was taken on September 29, 2021. The second photo was taken on December 7, 2021 about 5 months post op with a 20lb weight loss. I can’t believe I’m down 2 pant sizes already. Apparently my doctor prescribing a binder he didn’t know it has a dual purpose. One it’s for medical reasons and two it’s better then using a belt to hold your pants up. -

Any 45+ year old women on here with gastric bypass experience?
MSWDiet replied to timmytommy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was 47 when I had RNY gastric bypass twelve years ago. There was no "honeymoon" period where the pounds melted away for me. I do not believe this was age related because my surgical peers at the time lost weight at about the same rate as younger women. Nonetheless, I exceeded my surgeons goal and have maintained this with a lot of difficulty. An autoimmune disorder, hypothyroidism and medications are to blame for an average loss of less than half a pound weekly. Watching the scale go down and up then repeat was frustrating but I had a good experienced surgeon who also had the same procedure. The metabolically challenged as he put it need to stay on plan even when it seems there is no progress. Not what I wanted to hear at the time. I was angry and beginning to have regrets but a good support network "talked me off the ledge". After a year of following the rules I made changes to my doctor's plan. Using information from the body building community I Incorporated eating practices used to increase lean muscle mass. None conflict with the needs of gastric bypass patients. I researched options I believed could serve me better. At 17 months post op I made my desired maximum weight. I'm still pushing to get 5lbs lower. I deliberately left out the numbers. Not because it's a secret, I've posted this info in the past. Some individual readers may distinguish between weight/BMI classifications then rate difficulty and speed of weight loss to evaluate "success". That is not the point of my reply. Also, I make no claim to post op diet perfection nor do I blame metabolism for my obesity. No matter where you start at any age you will need to work your plan. You may work hard and see only small results as you watch surgical peers break their surgeons rules and do well. Further, you will likely have to make Healthful adjustments to augment your progress based on your needs. I've met many success stories since I committed to surgical intervention and I'm in good company. Today my weight is 30lbs up because of steroids, hypothyroidism, and binge eating disorder. It was 40lbs up a few weeks ago. Age is not the only issue in my struggle but "I Got This". This is one of a few episodes of rapid fat gain. I'm not talking about pounds and Water weight. You will not hear me say I've gained my weight back. What I've put on is fat but it's not mine and I'm not keeping it. I've learned how to "re lose" body fat and curb weight gain in spite of menopause and other factors. There is no secret to my maintenance. Never buy a larger size, period. Clothing measurement, not size number is my guide. I avoid stretch fabrics when I can without sacrificing style. I also monitor my body fat percentage. Formulas used by the YMCA and the military are easy to find. Ten years plus post op forced me to figure this out. A support network even before your procedure can help you learn what you need for the long term. If you have access to counseling or mental healthcare take advantage of it. Many of us with recently recognized mental health concerns like binge eating disorder and compulsive over eating do not know these illnesses exist. They can even be incorporated into a healthy post op eating plan with your nutritionists blessing. The more you know about why you are obese the easier and more successful your maintenance plan will be. Yes, I said maintenance plan. You asked for post op support but You WILL Succeed. We all find our way here because we want to be well and we all can be. I've included what I wished I knew pre op. This process is emotional as well as physical. Every pound lost is joyful but for some even a week with no change feels devastating. Get ready for the highs and lows knowing will be the Winner. Some famous writer somewhere is quoted as not having had the time to be conscise. For me include spell checking and grammar too. You have my story and I hope it's helpful. All the best! -

Hi! Sorry for the slow reply. I hope your surgery went smoothly, I know how scary it is. I am a little over one year out and have lost 96 pounds, and continuing to lose weight. I have so much more energy and confidence, it was the best decision I have ever made. I have had zero complications, I stick to eating smaller meals more often and it works best for me. It is a challenging journey, especially the beginning. Take the time to listen to your body, and never rush. Best of luck to you, I'm excited to see your progress. -
Hi everyone. I was sleeved on November 30th and am in the pureed phase. Ever since the surgery, I have been hungry. The surgeon and dietitian want me eating 3 "meals" a day. Naturally I get full on very little. The problem is that in between the meals, I am starving. Hangry. Weak. I go back to a classroom full of hormonal preteens excited about winter break next week and I simply will not have the stamina on so little calories. I am drinking about 50 ounces of water a day. I wish that in between breakfast and lunch I could have a tiny bit of cottage cheese and in between lunch a dinner maybe a bite of hummus. Would this really stall weight loss or interfere with my stomach healing? Is anyone on 6 meals vs. 3 during this phase? On the subject of stomach healing, yesterday I was so so hungry that I ate my dinner too fast, had the foamies and heartburn, and finally threw up. Misery. Will this damage, or stretch, the stomach (I feel irrational asking this, but I am a worry wort)? Thank you.

catwoman7 replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you won't start gaining as long as you follow your program's guidelines. there's a chance your stomach may not be ready to move on (most of us can - but some can't progress to the next stage quite as fast as others). So if your stomach rebels, just back up to the liquid stage for a few more days and then try again.
