    At 5 weeks you're still healing! 17 pounds down is excellent. Your surgeon shouldn't be so hard on you. Do you have a dietician you talk to? See if they have any suggestions. I drink bone broth for protein (I hate the shakes too but I force one down a day - I'm 5.5 months out so I can handle it but at first I had to find alternatives because like you I'd spit them out when I tried the first few weeks). You can also drink Fairlife skim milk. It's not sweet or thick and goes down easy. Protein water and Gatorade are good, too. I drink those on occasion when I fall short on protein. Hang in there! It'll get better.
  2. It's very normal to regret surgery early on - many people do, and it's easy to see why. You're in pain from gas and the incisions, your weight hasn't gone down (and may have even gone up!) due to all the fluid pumped into you during the surgery - as a side note, STAY AWAY from the scale for the first month!! And you may want to eat but cannot, you probably feel nausea and fatigue. Recovery SUCKS. Then ketosis symptoms set in. For me it was dry mouth, leg cramps when walking up a hill, brain fog, and general fatigue. I drank my 64 ounces of water a day and still had cotton mouth. It was crazy. That being said... being in ketosis means you're burning all your fat stores to stay alive so you just cope with it. My dietician said you could resolve the symptoms temporarily by drinking 24 ounces of juice for 3 days. But the thought of drinking something so sweet made me want to gag so I never did that. Anyway, IT DOES GET BETTER. When you step on the scale 4 weeks after surgery you'll see the number has dropped significantly. Your clothes will start feeling looser. The pain and nausea will subside. And you'll start to feel closer to normal. Every week it'll get a little better. Eventually your energy levels will normalize, and then they will increase as you get slimmer. It's fantastic. I'm 5.5 months out now and feel great. I can eat relatively normally (albeit much smaller portions than I used to) but nothing bothers my tummy. My appetite is back but it's not impossible to ignore like it used to be. I feel 20 years younger and am in really good shape. I love being able to take stairs without losing my breath, bend over and pick things up off the floor without my joints and back aching, chasing my kids around, walking fast, and crossing my legs It all is worth it in the end!! Hang in there!
  3. I just bought a standard scale from Amazon. Lots of people buy these fancy scales that automatically upload your weight to your phone, but it's so simple to just type in your weight into MyFitnessPal or something like that. You can also buy a body fat percentage scale, but most of those are highly inaccurate because they don't measure your upper body; they just extrapolate from your legs and hope it's the same! There are some where you hold a handlebar out from your body for a more accurate result, but the one I have is a pain to use. You can get a DEXA scan occasionally to get a more accurate result. Don't try to go to the hospital to get one; it will be really expensive. There are private companies that do them for $100-$150. The most important thing is that when you weigh yourself, it should always be the same time of day (you will weigh less in the morning) and wearing the same outfit (I wear just my birthday suit!). Some people will weigh once a week. I weigh every day, but I make sure I'm focusing on trends rather than the change from the day or week before.

    You lost 17 pounds in 5 weeks and the surgeon is disappointed?!? Also, it's normal to gain weight right after surgery because you are pumped full of fluids that cause water retention. If you can't stomach sweet protein shakes, consider broth/soup with unflavored protein powder added (just follow the direction on the powder because if you microwave it, it's totally clumpy and gross!). I can understand the surgeon's concern with the sugar in the drinks. Light and Fit makes a sugar free protein shake. It's pretty small, so maybe you can drink that? Also, make sure you are getting enough liquid. If plain water doesn't taste good (I don't like it now), try flavoring packets like crystal light, or tea or coffee (decaf if necessary). Like @Kaguragetshealthy_87, you should be gentle with yourself. You just had major surgery! Beating yourself up won't help your progress. Good luck!
  5. Yeah, i went ultra low throughout the 7 months of weight loss phase, for me, that meant under 20g NET carbs per day (i don’t count fibre nor sugar alcohols). For about a year into maintenance, I just went “regular” low-carb at about 50~60g net daily. Now, while I do still keep track of my daily carb amounts, I don’t try to stick to any limits or anything…I track mostly for data collection and future analysis (yeah im nerdy like that, lol). In terms of calorie consumption, here are the averages during MY weight loss phase…. NOTE: my calorie intake is on the low side compared to others I’ve read on here. I do not recommend anyone do as I do without a consultation with a medical professional. It worked for me…and may or may not work for you. 2 week liquid pre-op diet: 600-900 cals (I had either 2 or 3 protein shakes a day) First 2 weeks post op: 50 cals a day (no joke…surprised I didn’t keel over and die) Week 3 to Month 3: 300-400 a day Months 4-5: 400-600 a day Months 6-7: 600-800 a day Months 8-12…worked up to 1500 Year 2: 2200+ a day (this was my peak exercise/activity period) Year 3: 1800-2100 a day Now (in year 4): 1600-2000 a day, but mostly stay around 1800.
  6. Hi, I had my sleeve on Dec 20th so I am a little ahead of you, I have decided to stay on liquids an extra week as I just didn't feel ready, I have been nibbling on some cheese though. I don't feel that I am reaching my protein or water goals but doing my best, I don't feel hungry apart from in an evening but I think that is more habit as I was an evening snacker. I so get the feeling of wanting to chew!! You are doing well with your loss, keep hydrated though!

    I'm so sorry, that is really difficult. I experienced something somewhat similar. When I was about 3 weeks out my mom fell and broke her elbow and I completely spiraled and ate whatever I could, I was depressed and I drank alcohol. So when I went to my 6 weeks appointment they were disappointed that I didn't lose more. However, my dietician tried to not be judgey and try to work with me to get back on track. She looked at my log and told me to stay focused on proteins, vitamins, water, and if I have room vegetables, also finding the formula for miralax so I can relieve constipation. I also didn't see my surgeon I saw his assistant. Okay so to your question, honestly its so hard. I've been blessed to have a therapist so I meet with her every other week to deal with my mental health because that's part of it. I'm trying to take time to be disciplined, dedicated and intentional. I keep working really hard every day to stick to that book they gave me before surgery and I try really hard not to compare myself to others. Some people bodies are just so different and I keep telling myself to keep going. But the reality is that I still cruise this site to see where everyone else was at this week or that week. And while sometimes it helps me there are a lot of times where it doesn't help. My best advice would be, if you can work closely with your dietician to try to find something that you can eat without discomfort. Keep repeating that and stay steady and give yourself some grace.
  8. Couldn’t sleep the last 2 nights but I also have Covid at the moment. Since I’m vaccinated it was only like a cold but it’s clearing up now, but I wasn’t sure if the insomnia is due to VSG or Covid or something else. I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow and I am hoping this is a sign of a Jumpstart to my metabolism since I’ve stalled after the 1st week loss of 13.5 lbs. Perhaps it’s a sign I need to be more active during the day. I also just started eating solid foods last Friday so that could be it. Covid insomnia is also a “thing” so only time will tell. I’m tired tho. 🥱

    those kinds of thoughts are pretty normal the first few weeks - and, it gets better. I felt that way the first month, too, but having WLS turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made - I'd do it again in a heartbeat! And yes, the first few weeks are tough - but you will live a normal life again. Other than my stomach not being able to hold as much food as before, my life is completely normal, and has been for a long time (I'm almost seven years out). and others are right, this is NOT easy! This is just a tool - you really have to work at it to get the weight off - and then you have to keep working at it to keep it off. It's a lifelong struggle - albeit made do-able thanks to the surgery. There's no way on earth I could have lost over 200 lbs and kept it off without surgery.
  10. Hello everyone, I am 6 weeks post op and I'm a bit discouraged by the amount of weight I have lost and my surgeons reactions. The first week after surgery I could not get anything but 12 oz of apple juice and water down. I experienced protein aversion and would spit out any protein drink or shake that I tried to take. To my surprise, at my 1 week visit I gained 2 pounds (I was also experiencing my first bout of constipation post op). For reference Surgery day: 317; Week 1: 319. After that I moved to the puree stage and found that I can only eat a limited amount of food varieties without feeling sick, and for the most part that will only last for a few days. The only thing I can consistently eat is yogurt or a yogurt drink (8-12 oz per day) for breakfast and water. Most days I force myself to eat different low fat pureed things like burrito-less burritos, buffalo chicken dip, tuna, chicken salad, crust-less quiche ect. I tend to make them in cupcake or muffin molds so it's easy to pack for work. Usually, I can only eat one at lunch and have half of something else for dinner. Last week I had my 1 month visit with a different surgeon (mine was out for personal reasons) and I lost 17 pounds since surgery day, but the surgeon seemed disappointed that it wasn't more. They asked what I was eating, and then I was chastised for the amount of sugar in the yogurt drinks. I tried explaining that most things make me feel sick or that I have to force myself to eat. I guess my question is how do you no feel discouraged by the speed you are losing weight? Or the expectation of your medical team?
  11. WLS is NOT the lazy easy way out. Get that out of your head. It's not a miracle cure. It's only a tool. You still have to do all the hard work. Second, it's only been a week. The surgery released hormones in your body and you're second-guessing what you did. You're healing. Life is changing. It's all normal to feel this way. Talk to the counselor at your surgeon's office and deal with some of these issues.

    Actually I am glad to have had this surgery. I think during pre-Op diet and even during the post-Op clear/full liquid phases, I was obsessed with watching YT videos of yummy Indian food. Buy now 6 weeks post-Op, those thoughts have died down and so have the yummy food videos. It gets better. Trust me, it will. Also like @ShoppGirlmentioned, when it gets overwhelming have a spoonful kf your favorite food. As soon as I was able to allow soft/regular diet, I had some of the restaurant Indian curries. Ofc didn't go crazy. But I had a spoonful of it. Also had little of cake, chocolate, chips etc. Again make sure not to go overboard. Anyhow, once I tasted those foods, it kinda worked to make me realize, I'll eventually feel normal and would be able to tolerate some of my favorites in small quantities ofc. I used to be obessed with the mentality *one more day of binge eating and then I'll diet* That went on for a decade. Binge, diet, binge, diet. It was a vicious cycle. While post-Op is a new journey all together. I don't get those tendencies anymore. I feel satisfied having little bit of everything I can tolerate than restrict myself or deprive myself. I think deprivation leads to disastrous results. Reason why most diets never worked for me. Keto, avoiding carbs etc etc wasn't me. I wanted something that can break the vicious cycle and surgery did it for me. Yes first month or even 2 or even 3 may be worse, but it gets better. Anyhow, sorry about the ramble lol. But I hope you get the gist of what I was trying to say. Day at a time, stick to the program and your thoughts too will rewire. I think many out here will agree with it. Good Luck with your journey 😊

Hi, im one week post op today, and the moments of wondering wth have I done to myself and my body is getting worse daily and so worried I will never be able to live even a semi normal life again. I do have a food addiction issue, and had a hernia, fatty liver, high bp and was pre- diabetic, so knew i needed to do something drastic, but all those rational thoughts just make me think i took the lazy, easy way out and must have been out of my mind to not sort myself out and resort to something this irreversibly drastic. I know im responsible for this, but really Just wondering if anyone else has these fears and what you do to get over it…? tia
  14. 5’2” female (was 46 yrs old when I had my surgery in 2018); 235 lbs at the start of my 2wk pre-op diet. weight lost as follows: 2 week liquid pre-op diet: 11.8 lbs Month 1: 22.2 lbs Month 2: 15.8 lbs Month 3: 13.2 lbs Month 4: 11.1 lbs Month 5: 10.3 lbs Month 6: 12.5 lbs Month 7: 9.0 lbs (Reached Goal by this point…127 lbs) Months 8-12: 15-ish lbs more. Today at 3+ years out, I have maintained +/- 5lbs of 115 lbs since, and managed to stay below goal weight the entire time. My average calories to maintain changes as my activity levels change, but for the past several months I average about 1800 cals a day with moderate exercise. I weighed 116.6 lbs this morning. I used to be ultra-low carb, but now I eat pretty much whatever I feel for..though in smallish amounts.

    Your TDEE is 2300 per day. If you're even eating 1400 calories per day, that means you're in a calorie deficit of approximately 900 calories per day. It's recommended to eat 500 calories less than your TDEE for weight loss. So maybe you are under eating, given your 900 calorie deficit on work out days. I would diligently track everything you eat on a tracking app and play around with adjusting calories for a couple of weeks and see if the scale moves. Right now I would increase daily calorie intake to 1600-1800 per day on the days you work out, and go with 1200 calories on the days you don't work out. It's frustrating, I know. But you will break the plateau soon! Keep up the good work!

    Eat till full or?

    My nurse told me to reach the point of being satisfied not full or stuffed. She also said I might feel pressure or fullness in my chest. Listening to your body has a learning curve and one bite too many and it will feel like food is stuck in the esphagus. Like you, I had my surgery a little over a week ago but I had the sleeve. I'm not sure if the cues are different for bypass.

    Trouble Eating

    I had this problem between the two and three month mark--mine was caused by a combination of acid reflux and some food intolerances that have since seemingly resolved themselves already. It's really important to talk to your treatment team; the suggestions and adjustments mine prescribed to me helped a LOT.

Yes I had no idea when I was full until the past two days - I hit 3 weeks yesterday- and to my surprise I start kinda hiccuping but not like normal ones and today I now feel the dreaded pain of I am full that I’ve heard so many others talked about. I am thinking maybe the nerves are finally waking back up? Idk! I started measuring 3 oz I can eat between 2-3 depending on what it is

    I would really consider what your real goals are, 160 seems realistic. Many on here have said the last 10 are the hardest. I wouldn’t try anything extreme unless you’re going to do it the rest of your life to keep it off. Look closely at what you could shave off of food. Could you eat one less bite at each meal? Could you mix up your exercise routine? They body responds when we try new things. Have you met up with TOPS or WW? Do you have a group or friend to have a friendly competition? Sometimes I watch 70lbs of life on YouTube. She has an online Weightloss challenge. I personally just broke a stall by reintroducing rubber bands on one lifting day, leaning into keto, and now use a noise machine for better sleep. Hopefully I’ll get your problem of the last 10 by next year. Good luck.

    Don't give up! I stalled for about 3 months and then the scale started rapidly moving again. I did a body scan and I had actually stayed the same weight but lost 4 kilos of fat/gained 4 kilos of muscle in that time. At this point I would focus on body measurements and body fat % instead of the scale.

    Taming Cravings

    My main strategy is to fill up on low-calorie foods. Once a week, I buy and prep a bunch of snack veggies (celery, carrot chips, cucumber slices, pepper slices, and cherry tomatoes). I portion them out in meal prep containers, one for each day, and I have a saved meal that I enter in My Fitness Pal at the beginning of the day. Then I snack on the veggies whenever I want (I usually split them between mid-morning and mid-afternoon), knowing that they’re already accounted for. I use Walden Farms “calorie-free” dressing as a dip. It is a LOT of food for ~60 calories. If I’m in the mood for something warm, my go-to is cauliflower rice with Flavor God cheese seasoning and Mrs. Dash. Or I make a soup with cauliflower rice and chicken broth. 20-30 calories and very satisfying. I have a great substitution for ice cream! Whip pasteurized egg whites (safe to eat without cooking) with cream of tartar, calorie-free sugar substitute, and flavoring of choice (vanilla is delicious but I like to experiment with different flavors of One-On-One) and freeze. It’s best to eat before it’s frozen solid, or after letting it soften for a few minutes. It makes about 1 cup for just 25 calories, and it’s dairy-free and high in protein. I also use it (without freezing) as a substitute for whipped cream and put it on 10-calorie sugar-free Jello. Sometimes just looking at the nutrition information is enough to deter me. One time someone brought donuts to work and they were calling my name. I looked up the nutrition info to see how bad a small glazed donut would be, and it was 280 calories! I could eat two Built Bars for that and I would enjoy them more, and once I looked at it that way, I had no desire to eat the donut. Not worth it!
