    New Here - Banded 2/8/06

Hi folks! I was banded on 1/25/06 and am 3 weeks post op. I was sick of chicken broth too. I lived on sugar free fudgesicles, cream of potato soup (strained), cream of mushroom soup and other cream soups. They tasted wonderful after all the broth. I also had low fat yogurt. It all went down fine. I found that if I were hungry, about mid-morning I would drink 20 oz. of crystal light and the same in mid-afternoon. I got creative one night when I fixed pork chops for my family. I took the pork chops out, put cr. of mushroom soup in skillet and had soup that had the pork flavor to it. (but we routinely use the m. soup for gravy on meat and/or potatoes.) It did give it a nice taste! Be creative.... Thank God though for those sugar free fudgesicles during that time!!

    Newly banded in NY

I made egg flour soup. Boiled chicken and used the broth and swirled eggs in it. Then strained it was great and ok by my doc. I was also creative with my drinks add yogurt, pudding mix SF. There are several ideas available on the internet. Have fun and best of luck to you. I did the liq diet for three weeks I am now on one meal a day and the rest liq. its not all that bad
  3. For the first week post-op it says that I can have full fluids. This apparently, according to the list from the clinic, says low-fat yogurt. Does anyone know of a yogurt that is fruit flavored but does not have the fruit pieces in it?
  4. Hi Amy. My two week pre-op diet is pretty extreme. It is a clear liquid, low sugar diet which consists of unlimited sugar free Jello , popsicles, and broth. Of course Water, crystal lite and decaf tea. Low carb Protein drinks- make sure you are getting 60 grams of protein/ per day. Also I can have 2 sugar free fudgsicles, 1 cup of skim milk, and 8 ounces of low carb yogurt. ATTENTION DIABETICS: They recommend consuming 15 grams of carbs every 2 hours. Be sure to monitor your blood sugars and contact your doctor as necessary. beverages with 15 grams of carbs include: 1 regular popsicle, 1 cup of skim milk, 6 ounces lite yogurt, 1/3 cup of regular jello also 1/2 cup of orange, apple or grapefruit juice. When I received my pre-op diet from my doc. I thought let's check it out, let's see how hard it is. It hasn't been to bad so far. Note: I'm doing this on my own, I don't have a surgery date yet. So I will not be doing this for the full two weeks. I've been doing the pre-op diet since Monday and have lost 15 pounds so far, but I have a lot to loose. People at work are starting to notice , which I love. I hope this helpful. Deb

    Boars Head Turkey

Soups, mashed potatos, yogurt, cottage cheese. Don't introduce solids until your doc says it's okay. Any kind of meat, including deli, is considered a solid food. If you chew steak enough it will turn to mush, but that doesn't mean we should eat it. Every time you introduce food into your pouch, the stomach starts moving & wiggling to begin the digestive process. Mushies slide right through the pouch, where solids need more work. Why take chances swallowing bits & pieces that aren't pureed? I'd put the turkey in a food processor first to make pate'. Follow the rules, that's why they're written.
  7. Hi all, Well, I am here 5 days post op. Surgery was April 30th at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown CT. I guess my surgery was pretty much textbook according to my doctor. Had the robotic assisted surgery gastric bypass. I don't consider myself obese by any means. I was 6'2" and at my heaviest I reached 298. That was at 44 years old when I had my heart attack. Love my Dad but that's one thing I didn't want from him. I have thought about this surgery for about 2-3 years now but never pulled the trigger. Last summer, after 7 knee surgeries and being scheduled to have major back fusion surgery due to a motor vehicle accident, I was sent to a second opinion with a neurosurgeon at Hartford Hospital in Hartford CT. THis appointment let me know what my later years may be like due to a severely degenerative back. I decided at that time I would get back into exploring gastric bypass. My cardiologist and gastro doctor had both said this surgery was made for people like me. Again, I never thought of myself as obese but did knew I was overweight. A little about me. I have always been active. Been a volunteer firefighter since the age of 14. Worked my way up thru the ranks to Deputy Chief. My back got so bad I had to leave 3 years ago. Coached my boys in baseball thru little league, Babe Ruth and travel baseball. Involved with my sons high school and youth football teams. Now I coach my grandson in youth football. I am also a 7 year high school baseball umpire doing 75-100 games per year. Plus work a full time job. I don't sit around but I like to eat. Never a buffet I didn't like.LOL I attended Dr. Jonathon Aranows conference back in September of 2013 at Middlesex Hospital. My wife came as my support. My wife who is also 100lbs overweight, type II diabetic and in need of knee replacement came out of that meeting wanting to do it also. We went thru the process of doctors, nutritionists and psychologists appointments together. Debby had the gastric sleeve surgery on Feb. 28th. Due to my back, it was suggested that I have my back surgery first and wait 12 weeks before the bypass. Debby has lost 41 lbs and looks amazing. So back to me. I received insurance approval with a BMI of 37 along with my past medical history. I had my surgery Wednesday April 30th. I'm not to sure how to feel yet. Yesterday I asked to have someone take me out back and put me down. I attribute this to seeing in my literature that tomato Soup is a food you can eat. So I mixed it up with some soy (yuk) milk and tried it. Got about 1/4 teaspoon down and wanted to die for the next 8 hours. Just couldn't drink anything and was plain old miserable. Finally I decided to have a yoplait 100 cal vanilla yogurt because since I already wanted to die it couldn't get much worse. That was a life saver. Today somewhat nauseous but ate a couple yogurts with half scoop of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder mixed in. Took about half to 3/4 of an hour to eat but all in all I'm doing ok. I don't move anywhere without something to drink in my hand or within arms reach. Hard to get 60-70 grams of protein in yet and 48 oz. of fluids is tough but I'm close. I know I am not supposed to but I got on the scale. Down 10 lbs. I have 5 children, 3 of the most loving grandchildren you could ask for. At 48 years old, I wanna watch them marry and have their own kids. That's why I did this. Maybe slow the back degeneration down some to. Me and the wife got big together. Our 2nd half of our life together is going to be healthier. To much to live for. I don't want to have another heart attack or any more surgeries. I have put far to many doctors children thru medical school as it is. I know this is a lifestyle change but with my life partner doing it with me together we will do it right. Would love to say to everyone who reads this that I feel great especially those who have yet to have it done, because I don't. This was done for the long haul. A better day tomorrow. A different road we will travel together and maybe not so many co-pays anymore. I hope this helps someone.
  8. I have made a shake out of the Premier Protein Shake a banana Greek yogurt and Peanut Butter. I didn't drink a lot of it. But it was yummy! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
  9. Try protein hot chocolate. I found it much easier to drink than cold protein shakes. If you make it with Fairlife milk instead of water, it has as much protein as a shake. I love the BariatricPal brand, but there’s a similar product from ProtiDiet that you can buy on Amazon. You can also try protein soups if you’re tired of sweet drinks. Another option is clear protein drinks (like Protein2O or Syntrax Nectar), which are more like juice than shakes, so you might find them more palatable. When are you allowed to start puréed foods? You can mix protein powder into almost anything puréed (unflavored for savory foods, flavored for sweet foods like yogurt or sugar-free pudding).

    Scared

@@2goldengirl At my personal support group we talked about leaks and someone there had one past 3 months; it does occur mainly because the healing process is different for each person. I do not believe is a leak because I would have a fever and other symptoms that go with a leak. I am waiting until Wednesday because the pain has continued with every bite of everything other than yogurt, and at this stage, eating just yogurt is not appealing! LOL.

1 week Post Op. Trip to grocery store overwhelming

Why did you throw it out? I'm confused. I went to the grocery store yesterday for the first time since surgery, 8 days out. I was cleared for full liquids and mushy foods. He said do that for a week or so, and when I feel ready to start puree. Did you do okay with soft foods like yogurt? Yesterday I tried yogurt for the first time, and a scrambled egg with some cheese later. It was wonderful. I'm going to try ricotta bake with tomato sauce and parm tonight. If you explain why you couldn't eat it/threw it out, we might be able to help you better. I'm sorry you're struggling!

    Diabetic Binge Eater Here

You might try refocusing your snacks to healthy alternatives. You might consume whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Try A tub of Dannon Oikos Triple Zero yogurt with about a quarter cup of fresh blueberries. It is also important to avoid all forms of processed sugars and remove them from your diet. I was diabetic prior to my RNY gastric bypass surgery and took two types of prescription medicine to control the condition. But even with that medication my diabetes was not being properly controlled. Two days after surgery when I left the hospital I was off all my prescription medicine for this condition and haven't taken any since. I am over 4 years post-op and text by blood sugar about once per month and it is fine. That is how quickly this condition can be corrected by surgery - almost overnight.
  13. Today is day 12 post op and my biggest issue is stomach irritability, I guess is the best way to describe it. It never stops and is quite uncomfortable and embarrassing. When empty it is calmer but with any food whatsoever it's obnoxious. I know it has to be gas but I rarely pass any, more likely I will have diarrhea. It's loud, rumbly, and at times painful, but always uncomfortable. Of all the things to be concerned with, I know this seems trivial but if someone could give me some guidance, I'd sincerely appreciate it. I'm to the point that I'm abstaining from food too much. I know that's not right and need to fix this. So far, my soft foods are eggs, Soups, and yogurt. My shakes are Premier Protein. I'm always able to make my Water intake. A little concerned

Yup, that's right around the point where I started to feel hungry all the time. It's so hard to know if its head hunger or real hunger. Not to worry, your diet should be increased about now if its like most peoples. Once you get some yogurt it will stay in your stomach longer. In the meantime, acid in your stomach for some reason will feel like hunger. Is that an issue? Are you hungry when you see food online or tv? that's head hunger, or it could be that you're used to eating at a certain time of day so that's head hunger too. I just know I thought I was starving at 5 days. Things get better soon. Just try to stay on the liquids.

    Almost 2 weeks post op

Yeah from 1-5 weeks post op, I am only allowed to have cottage cheese, greek yogurt, sugar free pudding, apple sauce and of course the protein shakes strictly.. My nutrionist says that anything else is too hard on my staples /:

    post-op day #8

Congratulations!! You're doing great! My favorite soups during the full liquid stage were Trader Joe's Organic Creamy Tomato soup and Trader Joe's Latin Black Bean soup. I would put a dollop of greek yogurt or sour cream in the black bean soup and it was heavenly and oh so satisfying.
  17. I'm not that far out but I think I can answer you just as well. In the first two weeks, I was miserable. I roamed these boards trying to see what people farther out were eating to gain some hope for myself. At two months out, I am SO happy. I can eat pretty much anything. I've had issues with some things like soft bread (toasted is fine) or ground beef (homemade burgers HURT). I still have a snack every now and then, like chips or frozen yogurt. But I can easily moderate my portions now. I'm working out like a crazy person (loved it before surgery so love it more now!). I'm down 31lbs and have about 40lbs more to go. It does get easier. And most people can tolerate all foods eventually.
  18. I am 9 days post op now....I am on week 2 of my liquidy diet....I am allowed to eat things like sherbert, yogurt, pudding, and creamy soups. I am a little worried because I've been hearing people say that even though they don't get a restricted feeling they are getting full and I am not! My first fill is July 21st which is exactly 4 weeks post op. Do you think I'll notice a difference then? I'm so terrified that I was just cut open and expected to feel hugely different and I don't feel different at all! I need some words of encouragement!
  19. Have you tried Greek yogurt? Fascinating amount of protein in such a lil' container - I've found it to be helpful in my "full liquids" stage (ONE MORE DAY THANK GOD!). Luckily, yogurt is on my list of approved foods at the moment. I'm not a fan of the plain yogurt, but the flavored ones are divine!
  20. Levels jump from 110ish to 160ish. Eating triple zero oikios yogurt, priemier protein shakes, and tea/ water. Whats up?
  21. Choose the shakes and yogurt with the least amount of carbs. That is really all you can do until you are able to eat more variety. Once you are moved up to puréed and soft you can eat meat and vegetables Puréed well. Things like tuna salad, scrambled eggs, chicken salad, refried beans, cheeses.

    BitterSweet :) :(

Eat the carbs before working out as they are burned first before hitting muscle. Eat Proteins after workout. Supplement with Protein shake (130 calories and 23 grams protein) Protein Bars (low fat like Power Bars about 205 calories and 14 grams protein). Fat free cheese (25 calories and 5 grams protein) Fat Free Milk, 1cup (90 calories, 9 grams protein) Greek Yogurt (160 calories, 14 grams protein) Fat Free Cottage Cheese. 1/2 cup (80 calories, 13 grams protein) Mix up routine. DO NOT just do Zumba. Your body will adjust to workout, memory has muscle as well as brain. Incorporate some weight training, running, bicycling. Try a personal trainer for a few weeks help break up routine and give instruction on how to burn the fat, not the muscle.
  23. I had surgery 3 weeks ago, doing great. As of this morning I am down 18 lbs. since surgery, and 46.7 lbs. since my highest! My question is about stage 2 foods, any suggestions. I still would prefer really soft soft foods, don't really like eggs or cottage cheese. My stomach tolerates foods better in the morning. I eat one container of yogurt for a meal, have done tuna fish. Had a little chicken but I really prefer the Protein puddings, Soups or shakes ( never thought I'd say that). Just curious does it get a little better. I am happy a out the surger, but I do get hungry to chew something. The program I am in tells you NO CARBS! So I have been trying to follow their guidelines. Any other suggestions. Thanks, Annisa
  24. Ricotta cheese and pizza sauce heated in the microwave. Delicious. I also still enjoy Dannon light & fit greek yogurts.
