  2. I've been noticing something weird...didn't think much of it, but am giving it alot more thought now. I don't think it's a 'bad' thing...but a phenomena none the less. I met my goal in January and went in for a slight unfill to begin maintenance. The goal at that point was to cease weightloss and ensure no weight gain. The scale would move up a pound or two...or three, but within a week w/o dieting would come back down. Go up, come down. So maintenance is working for me. I'm done! I don't diet and haven't with the band. My goal with the band was modifying my behavior of how much I eat...not what I eat. Dining out so much (used to go several times a day to binge) has stopped. I go about 1-2x a week now. I cook more now instead of my nuke it. So you can see what I eat has changed for the better w/o giving up on the things I love. Thing is, today I weighed myself for the first time in a week (weigh at least weekly so I can catch if I start gaining) I lost another 2 pounds. And this week I haven't eaten as much as I usually do. So...my thoughts are.... I am eating to sustain my weight. My caloric/fat/carb intake is keeping me at 143. But when I go below that, I lose weight. I still have some restriction to keep me from binging. That will be a lifetime challenge for me as I did it for so many years. Anyone else on maintenance and having similar things happen or can anyone share insight as to should I 'diet' and get another unfill to loosen the restriction? Or just count my lucky stars?

    What was your “Moment” ?

I was is SO MUCH PAIN every day. It hurt to walk, climb stairs, carry groceries in, sit. I was always out of breath and had zero stamina. I was uncomfortable in my skin and the negativity that was running through my mind. I absolutely hated for my husband to see me naked, and pictures were very cringy to look at. I also dealt with mental health, and the medication I was on contributed to my weight gain (I gained 60 lbs in less than a year). I was just tired of being fat, unwell, and unhappy. I struggled to lose weight and needed help. I also had sleep apnea and high cholesterol. In the long term, I wanted to be well for my family and, eventually, my grandkids. I wanted to enjoy the second half of my life (I just turned 41). I didn't see that future at 262 lbs and the physical and mental condition I was in. Now, 71 lbs lighter, I have minimal pain (arthritis is still an issue), I'm growing stronger every day, and my stamina is higher. I strut around naked in front of my hubby and am confident in my own skin. I'm off all mental health medication, and my cholesterol is normal. I'm still having some sleep apnea issues, but I'm hopeful those will resolve by the time I get to my goal weight (30 lbs to go). And I feel hopeful for my future. I'm so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have this surgery.
  4. This post is half sharing of my experience with the band, an half question (see down below!). I'm still new to LapBand, and working to get into the green zone. I had surgery in November and after about 3 weeks of healing I could eat the same foods and portions as I could pre-surgery (this is normal). After my first fill I didn't feel any restriction yet (also a normal occurrence). After my second fill I finally started to get restriction. I found that I could still eat all of the same foods as before as long as I was slow and mindful. If I took a bite of something while distracted (this happened often at work -reading emails while eating- or sometimes at home -watching TV-) I would get stuck. That food would have to come up before I could continue my meal. After surgery, and after my first fill I was gaining weight (up to a pound a week). After my second fill my weight gain final stalled and I was stable. Now I've gotten my third fill and the restriction is upped again. I'm hoping to start tipping the scales in the right direction! I feel like I finally have the band I did all of the research on, and mentally prepared myself for, before surgery. The one that changed your eating habits, made you eat slowly and carefully, and might give you some food restrictions (like doughy bread or dry, tough meat). I'm wondering, for all of you out there with properly adjusted bands, what are your favorite go-to foods? My food habits pre-band included bread at Breakfast, fruit for Snacks, and usually veggies with Pasta for dinner. I think I now might have trouble with bread, fibrous fruits (like citrus, which breaks my heart since it's one of the only in-season fruits during winter) or veg (like cooked cabbage, less heart breaking but slightly annoying since I had just cooked up a large head of it for use in some freezer meals). I'm looking for help to reshape my food habits and find healthy, delicious foods that are band friendly so I'm not relying on processed or soft foods. Thanks for any tips!
  5. I will be banded 3 weeks from today, 11/8. I have always prepared healthy meals, but my 18 y/o daughter has gained a lot of weight in the past year from eating junk that she gets at school, stopping at McD's and DQ for ice cream and eating snacks that are really a meal. It started happening when her dad and I separated. She has asked me for help and I have shown her how to weigh, measure, keep a food diary, etc. It's getting her to continue that is difficult. She's angry with me because, in her words, now she'll be the only fat one in the house. Has anyone had the experience that others in the family are more motivated to lose weight after someone in the household has been banded? She has refused counseling to talk about her anger, which I know plays a huge part in her weight gain. I am so afraid that she'll end up as large and unhappy as I have been.
  6. I had the surgery only three days ago but I’m very disappointed to see that I have gained weight since. I’m nervous that this will never go away and it will continue. Advice please?

    No One In The Sixties?

Thank you for your post vickiebc! I just found this group today. I am 61 and have been to the seminar, the consultation and have my first meeting with nutritionist tomorrow. I was beginning to think there were no other people my age going through this. I I am very excited but also very nervous!! Please, keep posting. Sent from my QTAIR7 using the BariatricPal App Hi! Excited to see some of us "older but wiser" peeps on here! I am a 66 yr. young female going on 67 (in July) and had my surgery at 59. I went from "my" high weight of 241 to 127 in 8 months and was told to put on 5 lbs. Well I've done that, AND more, 23 lbs! I share this because it's a well known fact that if we do not stay plugged in to a support group and think our "pouch" is going to do all the work, we are fooling ourselves. I know because that's what I've done.....Im depressed about my weight gain, I cannot afford any type of cosmetic procedures and find myself slipping into the same habits that got me heavily obese in the first place! I'm not crying the blues or feeling sorry for myself folks, just asking if anyone out there has been, or is, there and what you did. For those of you who've just had the surgery, or are scheduled, I applaud you....I still believe it is the best thing I've ever done for myself Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
  8. if the pouch is being stretched out due to over eating, that is not the bands issue, again people need to remember this is a life style change, you cant put the band in, continue to over eat and over eat and expect to have great success, you have to follow the rules. I agree with lellow, if my dr had a 50 percent re weight gain I would not be considering that dr for my surgery.
  9. I had a 5 lb weight gain after week 4.. And it's finally back down.. When I eat I'm now making sure it weighs 4-5 oz in total. I'm trying to get all my water and protein in but it gets a little confusing at how much I should have .. Well with the protein any ways

    Ottawa support group

Hey Mandy is that you? I haven't checked out this site for about a year. So much have changed. I'm single again. My total weight loss so far is 85 lbs. I just had a defil in Ottawa with Dr Bishop and now I can eat everything I want. I'm still being careful but I have had at least a 5lb weight gain. I am waiting for a Barium swallo to she if the band has slipped. They don't think that it's possible but they want to make sure. Are you married yet? Are you maintaining your weight loss. So much catching up to do Louise
  11. I have not reached restriction yet but I have read enough here to know that it is better to get a small unfill than to be too tight. Being too tight can actually lead to a stall or even a weight gain because you will start relying on slider foods which can actually be more calories than you should eat. Not to mention the health problems that can occur from being too tight. Maybe have them take out .25 or .50 cc and you could end up being at your "sweet spot". Good luck.
  12. Hi yall... Im almost 6 weeks post op for my gastric sleeve.. My highest weight (right before liquid diet) was 255, day of surgery weight was 244, and my current weight is 231.5. I am loosing very slow.. In the 6 weeks post op I have only lost 12.5 lbs. I am able to tolerate all foods with no problems what so ever.. I was scared I was over eating and a friend of mine that has also had the surgery suggested a weighing my food out before eating (4-5 oz per meal). I started doing that as well... There are times that i feel i can eat more than what i have weighed out but I dont. I am also a type 2 diabetic. I retain water badly. I have been walking 2-3 miles 4 times a week. I have a bad shoulder and have limited movement with it.. On week 4 i had a 5 lb weight GAIN.. i about freaked.. I know it was water.. But it really stirred up a lot of emotions.. I am drinking my Total soy protein shake every morning.. and sometimes will drink a protein shot.. and the rest of the day i drink water (around 3-4 20 ounce cups per day with lemon and lime and stevia in the raw) And have 2 sensible weighed out meals. Now with all that said i also have PCOS.. Poly cystic ovarian syndrome.. Im fixing to turn 42 this month.. Is it normal for weight gains, stalls, Am I doing something wrong.. I am really at my wits end on what I should do to get the weight moving. I had my sleeve done in Mexico.. due to costs and all.. I dont have a nutritionist here.. But talk to several people that have had the surgery as questions arise... Any suggestions would be helpful.. Oh and I still feel hungry.... Is this all normal?? Im just CONFUSED !!!!!!!!
  13. Hi all!!! I'm new to this app. I had gastric sleeve surgery 2 weeks ago and instantly lost 14 pounds. Well I have gained 3 pounds back and it's causing some extreme anxiety. I feel like I'm gonna fail this time as I have so many times before. Anybody else experience this?
  14. I would agree with the others in that eating more does not result in weight loss, especially if you are taking a vacation from the scale. The times in life I have gained are the times I stopped weighing myself. If we're being honest, are you sick of dieting and sick of not seeing the number change so you want a little vacation from the entire process and convincing yourself eating more and not getting on the scale is the way to feel better, if not physically, then emotionally? I can understand that, but a spade is a spade. If you want to lose weight, my experience has been to keep at it every single day, otherwise it is very easy to slip back into old habits. It looks like you've already lost a lot of weight, so you're doing well. If you feel like you need more calories, it doesn't hurt to try that, but weigh yourself everyday so you can see if it's causing weight gain. This way in 2 weeks you'll either know you can eat more food and be fine or you'll know you can't, but you won't get on the scale and hate life because suddenly you gained 10 pounds that now you need to lose all over again.

    Question about flour

The purpose of the flour in these types of recipes is to thicken the sauce. Using powdered tapioca works just as well and doesn't have gluten. The amount of piccatta you are going to be able to eat isn't going to cost you that much carb-wise by elimanating the flour or using powdered tapioca. This will not be the cause of any stall or weight gain ...
  16. I had my follow up with the surgeon and discovered I as having an allergic reaction to the glue. I am happy to say @AceBlaque you were right. I am now 6lbs down from my presurgery weight. So all the surgery weight gain is gone plus another 6 lbs. Thanks again for your response. 💕
  17. Hi everyone, As a few of you know I'm recovering from an abdominoplasty and breast correction with implants. I'm 21 days post op and am healing greatly. One of the things I've noticed is my increase in appetite. While I've been told this is normal, my psychologist told me it may be physiological (mental) hunger. I do struggle with mental hunger, and have had some instances of it recently; but I can't say that my extra hunger is all mental. On top of my hunger I just feel so out of routine and find myself going for carbs and grazing. I guess I can say I'm lacking The usual structure of my diet regimen. Last week I weighed 146.4 pounds, this week I'm at about 150. I feel awful. I know I'm not supposed to focus on the number, especially during recovery, but I can't help it. I have an obsession with numbers, it was to the point of obsessing over the ounces of food I was eating and or the number in my clothing size. I've backed off a little and have been trying to find a happy medium, but the scale went up and I'm not happy. I don't know what to do with this whole recovery thing. I know lack of exercise has contributed to weight gain also. I'm all over the place right now trying to stay on track with my healthy eating, finishing up my last month of college, and healing. It's too much. I need guidance. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    anyone getting sleeved in DECEMBER?

Mine asked what I was doing and why I was doing it. How does my family and spouse feel about it. Will there be jealousy or a chance of infidelity( yes, he asked that). Also what led to my weight gain. Did I feel like I couldn't control myself or was addicted to food.
  19. I have a friend who had sleeve surgery a little over 2 years ago. She took on an "all things in moderation" point of view after she hit about a year out. She regrets that decision now because she is starting to see weight gain. Seeing her go through all these different phases in front of me, has let me learn from her mistakes. I'm not saying I'm going to eat like an angel forever, I'll have a bite of my own birthday cake, but I'm not going to allow myself to eat just anything. I don't want sweets right now, the idea of eating them kinda disgusts me, which is weird because I used to be the cupcake queen! For me personally, I really wanted sleeve surgery to be the tool that helped change me. From the inside out, I want food to be fuel, not food to be comfort or reward. I don't want this surgery, and struggling I'm doing now in the beginning to be in vain. Its just so easy for us to start out with good intentions, of all things in moderation to turn into self-sabotage because its so very easy to fall back to the way we mentally were before. Just my two cents.

is anybody out there suffering from pcos?

I have had PCOS for so long...when I was originally diagnosed it was called Stein-Leventhal Syndrome. I struggled 20 YEARS with it. Every single symptom, I have/had. Wls saved my life. I went from 6 insulin injections a day, to nothing. My PCOS helped me get high lipids, battle diabetes, high blood pressure, hair loss on my head, excessive hair growth everywhere else, extreme weight gain...I could go on and on. 2 years post vsg, my ONLY regret: that I didn't do the surgery sooner! 2 years post op, 188 pounds down, healthy, and 10 weeks pregnant!
  21. Pre surgery I drank a 12 pack of Coke Zero a day. Now, 16 months out I have not had a single one. My team said I am medically cleared to have it but it is associated with weight gain. They still don’t know exactly why the zero calorie beverage causes it but study after study shows the association and that’s enough to have kept me off of it. I like the crystal light. I use two packets to mix it by the gallon at home and have a ziplock bag full of them at all times in my purse. I like that I can switch up the flavors. A newer option is cirkul. Its a drink bottle that they sell flavored cartridges for. My aunt swears the flavors are even better than crystal light. They have their own website or you can get the starter pack at bed bath and beyond. She likes that you can adjust the intensity of the flavor because she likes them with more water. I suppose you can play around with the amount of water you add to crystal light and achieve the same thing though. I also like to mix two flavors together when I mix a gallon to create new flavors.

    Stalls - How many

I felt like I had a few minor stalls, but looking back at my charts it was really a pretty steady decline. I weighed myself every day & only added it to my tracker if it went down. A few Lbs up or down is not usually weight gain, its usually just normal fluctuations based on the time of day, fluids, etc. I would keep tracking, focus on whole foods & add walking to your routine- that always helped me.

    Too much at once?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I had my bat wings, moobs, and tummy tuck all in one go. I'm now 19 days post-op. I had 6 JP drains. The 2 in my arms and the 2 in my chest came out after a week. The 5th one in my groin got clogged somewhere around 2 weeks, so it was removed. The last one is still draining about 85cc / day of a slightly yellow, mostly clear liquid, so I really doubt it'll come out at today's visit. The day after surgery, they tried to stand me up. I passed out, probably because of low blood volume. Because of that, I spent a total of 3 days in the hospital, but by the end I was doing laps around the nurses' station. I had a button for pain meds & an IV antibiotic while I was in the hospital, plus Norco (hydrocodone + tylenol 5-325). A Norco every 4 hours actually worked better for me than the button, and that's exactly what my doctor prescribed for me to use at home. I also tried 500mg tylenol to see if I could get off the harder stuff sooner, but nope. I went from Norco every 4-6 hours down to just a Norco at night, down to nothing. I've been off all pain meds since day 15. The scale numbers are just plain depressing with all the fluids (and probably weight gain from being out of the gym),. My shirt size is now a men's medium! I was somewhere between a large / XL. I started working from home at day 14. I'll start going back in to the office on a regular basis once this last drain is out. Here's some tips I learned: You need lanyards for the JP drains. The nurses will pin them to your hospital gown, but once you start showering, that does you no good. Amazon sells a box of 25 for under $10. Use Glad Cling-wrap once you've only have a drain or two to keep dry but have otherwise healed up enough to shower. Don't be afraid to cut a hole in the butt of your compression garment for #2. My particular compression garment looks like a men's one-piece swimsuit from the 1920s. It has clasps and a zipper down the front. It also has a hole in the front for #1, but no flap in the back for #2. Especially with drains in your arms, it'll be hard to get in and out of the garment to use the toilet. The compression garment I got tended to roll up my thigh and cut off the flow, so my thighs collected a lot of fluid. A bed wedge or pillow + workout tights under the garment worked wonders for this. I wish I had a tip for getting rid of the glue from all the bandages. Nothing worked. I tried water, soap, ice, oil, and rubbing alcohol. I had to scrape it off with my fingernail.
  24. You may find you can’t stand anything sweet after surgery as your taste buds temporarily change. This a good thing as it can help reduce your desire for sweet foods. I never really craved sugar but I enjoyed dessert & having something sweet after dinner every night & a sweet treat morning or afternoon snack on the weekend (I have 6 high end patisseries & bakeries in a 2km radius around my house 😱). Now, I rarely have desserts, cakes, biscuits, pastries, etc. (couple of times a year) & don’t eat chocolate or lollies at all. Don’t miss it either. Watch artificial sweeteners as they continue to feed your desire for sugar & they have lots of side effects including weight gain (makes your body hold on to calories), allergies, etc. About 1/2 my fluid intake comes from plain water. I was allowed green tea from surgery & I have a large mug (400ml) every day. I also let sparkling water go flat & I have 400-500mls a day. The mineral taste was a nice change to plain water. I was also allowed rolled oats from purée (instant to begin) & I used a lot of milk so I get extra fluid that way. I also found a good low calorie high protein yoghurt drink. (You can make your own by mixing yoghurt with milk.) Keep a glass of water beside you all the time even by your bed. It actually just becomes a habit.

    Lap Band or Gastric Bypass

Ii am reading 2 books on this too, trying to make my own decision ... So far I have come to choose the LAGB over the LGS or the LRYGB b/c in Both of the books it states the % of weight gain back and they are higher than the LapBand. The LB is the least invasive procedure and requires less hospital stay time. It also says that because it is intended for long term maintenance reasons, the commitment by the patient is 100% or it will fail to do it's purpose. The risk factored of death are lower w/ the LB too. The Drs usually give the GB to patients who need to lose an excess amount of weight. the LRYGB is the most expensive and requires the longest hosp stay. All 3 are great but have different jobs in the body. With the LB there is no stapling, cutting, removal or reattachment procedures to your organs.I don't know if it helps you make a better decision but know know for sure which Gastric surgery I want. I would encourage u to keep reading and searching info on each type to help u make your choice. Research, research, research!!!!!! For those interested, the books I'm reading are called: 1) OUTPATIENT WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY - by : Kent Sasse MD 2) GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY - by : Mary McGowan MD
