    Uncomfortable.. Gas, Under Ribcage.

I have the same type of under rib and sternum pain and pressure with upper stomach gas. So tired of pain and bloating. I'm happy to say after six years my band is being removed and a sleeve done on 2/14. My band the first three years was ok. Lost 140lbs basically by eating chicken and beef soup and exercising. Soups were the only way I could get real solid protein. Then years four through six have been hell with pain and weight gain. The band isn't a real solution in my opinion.

hoping for lap band to sleeve

ok, cruisette i'm confused, lol doesn't take much for me. You got a 2nd band and it didn't take?? or you went from band to sleeve and it didn't take?? where did the 60 lb weight gain come from??
  3. Weight loss and weight gain is simple. It's calories in vs calories burned...we all know that. Sure, metabolism has some influence on that equation but every human still has a resting basal metabolic rate. Based on age and height/weight and activity level, it's a mathematical configuration that will tell you how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. If you eat more, you gain weight. I don't understand how a human being can eat at such a restrictive level, calorically speaking, and become morbidly obese. It's not that complicated and even if you had extremely poor metabolism, you still need at least 1,000 per day to pump blood through your heart and oxygenate your lungs, etc. Your situation is very interesting and suprising to learn about. Best of luck!

    Lazy and weightloss

Beth...there are studies relating sleep deprivation with weight gain, especially in menopausal women. Some studies state that with sleep deprivation comes stress. With stress comes eating because of stress. (Sorry, don't have those studies at my fingertips to quote). I gained an enormous amount of weight during menopause and I was sleep deprived due to extreme hot flashes. I do not agree with OP though on staying in bed and letting the weight fall off. Gotta move in any way that a person can. If I sat on my butt during weight loss stage, I would be afraid to look in the mirror to look at my saggy a$$. It was difficult at first to exercise but with pushing myself came the ability to exercise more with each phase.
  5. I am 2 years post-op from RNY surgery. My weight is fairly stable. On a recent visit to my nutritionist, I asked her "Why do some people lose significant weight after WLS only to gain it back years later?" Her response was because of grazing. I agree with you that gaining 10 pounds over the last two months sounds like it is on the high side and is of concern. Make sure you are meeting your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. Are you taking any medications that have an adverse side effect of weight gain? What works for me is when I graze (snack); I graze on protein and fats. Fats have the power to take away hunger. Without hunger it is not difficult to maintain my weight. Since I am 2 years post-op, I have begun to introduce fats back in my diet. I drink whole milk and use real butter. I begin each day with a cup of coffee. I top it with heaping spoon of real whip cream. This is whip cream that I make. It has no processed sugar. I use Splenda instead. I also consume Adkin's treats, because it contains fats but not processed sugars. It works for me. But I also steer clear of any processed sugars in my food - period. I will use artificial sweeteners (such as Spenda and sugar alcohols), low calorie natural sweeteners (such as Stevia) and natural sugars found in fruits and milk. Last week I hit my lowest weight thus far - 149.0.
  6. I am two years post op and I feel a lot of shame when it comes to my weight gain since surgery. I feel like I have failed and that once again food is winning and my waist line is losing. After weight loss surgery gaining weight is quite terrifying. I feel like I am slipping down a rabbit whole and the other side is all too familiar. There isn’t a single person that has weight loss surgery that doesn’t promise themselves that this will NEVER happen again, and for some of us it does happen. I suppose for me the first thing I need to do is stop punishing myself because that has never helped me gain control of my eating, the second thing is to take stock of why it has happened. For me that is very simple, I didn’t work on my head, I only worked on my body, I didn’t unfriend my toxic friend food! We are still in a dysfunctional relationship. The surgery limited my food intake, but it didn’t equip me with new coping mechanisms and unfortunately food still plays an important role in helping me relax, sooths me when I’m down, occupies me when I’m bored and helps me hide from the world when I don’t want to be seen. I have gained 15lbs since my surgery 2 years ago and some may even say that’s normal, but I know my eating is out of control. I have gained 10 lbs. in the last two months. For those of you that have been post –surgery for a long time, and have successfully maintained, how did you fix your head and your relationship with food?

    Birth Control and Weight Loss

I just saw this, but I highly advise against Depo. That shot was the beginning of my nightmarish weight gain, horrible periods, and other side-effects. Plus, I've seen way too many women go on it after WLS and A) their weight loss stopped They gained weight so I'm absolutely against Depo. As for what I would do if we hadn't been TTC, I would have gone with the non-hormonal IUD. I'm kind of weird about having stuff in my body after the band, but at the same time, my husband nor I are huge fans of hormonal birth control. We were a strict condom couple until I was cleared for TTC, and while I know it kills the mood, makes it so unfun, I wasn't willing to put my body through something else. We also used the spermicidal inserts, and those worked really nicely until he developed some sort of sensitivity to them. So, back to condoms we went. Again, I know it's a hassle, takes away from the experience, but pregnancy and having a baby before we were ready would have been very traumatic for us LOL.
  8. Nina, You've had a rough time. I'll bet it is the stress that put the extra weight on. I was thin (a bit anorexic thin) before and after surgery. Years later did some minor yo yo dieting. 8 years ago I filed for divorce from an abusive man, married 37 yrs before divorce became final. It was surely the divorce from hell. It's lasted 8 years and still lingers on. It cost me $100,000.00 and left me so poor that I'm on Medicaid. He wanted to hurt me anyway he could as a way of punishing me for divorce. That was all major stress. I began at 125 pounds and began gaining in 2001. I got up to 198 but am now 179.5 and a long way to go. It was the stress that caused the weight gain. I've been reading about it and this type of stress (kind I have and kind you have) causes weight gain especially in the abdomen.
  9. I had the sleeve at 19, I was terrified of the bypass because I was nervous about them touching my intestines, but now at 22 after weight gain and awful heartburn that led to stomach ulcers, I will be converting in July. Just looking for anyone who may have converted, what was different post op with the bypass than post op with the sleeve?
  10. Yep, you'll probably have some fill removed. BUT - it is perfectly and easily possible to have a bouncing healthy baby with NO weight gain at all and keeping to around 1500 calories a day. I did it, with the blessing of my obstetrician becuase I was around 104kg when I fell pregnant with my third baby. He said to keep the calorie count down but to eat really good, nourishing food becuase the baby needs nourishment, not calories. In fact your body really only needs about 200 calories extra per day from the third trimester energy wise. I counted Weight Watchers points and ate very very carefuly and at the end of the pregnancy, not only did I have a healthy 3.72kg daughter, but I walked out of the hospital over 10kg lighter than when I'd conceived. My weight went up by about 3 or 4 kgs over the course of the pregnancy. That's becuase I was 25-30kg overweight though, if you've reached a normal weight you will need to eat more and gain more.

    sex after surgery

I love it! I have only been on it for a little bit. It's one shot every three months. It's quick and I don't have to think about it everyday. I haven't spotted or anything. I've heard a lot of people said they've gained weight on it, but I think you have to give into those cravings they cause you to have (which I haven't had any) any birth control can cause weight gain, because it tricks your body into thinking it pregnant. I use to take seasonique which I loved but the first year bc pills are only 30% effective because of absorption.

    Carbs

You will probably experience some water weight gain, reversing that "extra" loss one gets from being on a low carb diet. Being on a low carb diet usually means that your glycogen (short term energy reserves of stored carbohydrate) is minimized, along with the water that would normally keep it in solution. When you resume a more normal diet, your body will start building its glycogen reserves back toward normal, which involves storing a little more water. This is one of the reasons we are often advised to overshoot our goal weight as there will be some bounce back as things stabilize. This is also why people who sometimes go off plan over a weekend and consume more carbohydrates than usual will gain a quick couple of pounds and then lose them again within the week when they go back to their usual low carb diet. Many get the impression that it is the carbohydrates that cause weight gain, but actually it is the low carb diet that they have been on - if you aren't on a low carb diet, carbs don't cause any weight gain (beyond whatever excess calories one may be consuming.)
  14. Did you experience weight gain during this stage? When did it turn around for you? I've noticed a 1.5lb change this week since I graduated to mushy's :tt1:

Painful Walking. How Do You Do It ?!

It was definitely that hard for me. I'm not only battling obesity, but I also have Multiple Sclerosis. When I got my Lap Band surgery in January, I needed a handicapped parking sticker just to make it to the front of the grocery store and then a motorized cart to do my shopping. When I did walk, I used a cane. In fact when I first started going to the end of the street and back I had to use a cane to do it. So yes, it was probably even harder than I'm adequately describing here. As for my weight loss, yes I did lose a lot fast, but I'm human. Heck, I've been pretty much stuck for a month now and I'm currently experimenting with carb cycling in hopes of kicking my metabolism into working again. It's incredibly frustrating to be at a plateau like this but I know two things- 1. No weight loss is better than a weight gain and 2. It's normal and it'll pass eventually. Hang in there and don't give up, you can totally do this!

    Feeling frustrated and demoralized

It’s so soon after surgery that you are surely still feeling the effects of fluid retention and inflammation. Also weight loss will be the easiest the the first 12 months post op (not the first 3 days) so don’t lose hope. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/weight-gain-after-surgery https://www.stylecraze.com/articles/main-reasons-for-weight-gain-after-surgery/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5389231/
  17. I've always been aware of what it took to lose weight and if I could lose 2 lbs a week I was grateful. But when I was banded, I got this googley eyed notion I was going to lose 10 lbs every month. And you know what? I didn't? So, if you're new or in a stall. Do the math. Every pound put on came from 3500 calories you consumed. So, every lb of fat you lose will require you burn off 3500 more calories than you consume(easy to get googley eyed and forget this) So, if your body needs 1400 calories a day to function normally, and let's say you walk and burn off 300 calories a day through exercise, you're body needs 1700 calories/day to maintain. And if you consume 1000 calories/day your deficit will be 700 calories a day or 4900/week. That equals about 1.4 lbs a week you'll lose. Now throw in Water weight gains and losses it's going to be up and down but mostly down. Good luck.

    Zoloft/Lap Band/Weight Gain?

Rhonda...I think everyone responds differently to all of the various meds for depression. I have been on Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Effexor, and now Cymbalta and have never seen a weight gain that I could pinpoint on the meds. Whether it contributed or not to my weight gain I don't know, but I am doing fine losing weight now. For me, it is worth it to have my sanity back. Like DeLarla, I started having panic attacks so badly that I had to go on disability. The meds and therapy have brought me back to the "land of the living". I haven't had a panic attack or a major depression since April...praise be. Best of luck to you. DeLarla...I wish I would have know about the "Water therapy"...sounds much more effective than the Xanax...

3 weeks out and weight gain

I had RNY on 4/10/17 and I can't tell you what's going on, but I well understand your worry and frustration. I'm looking for a weight loss buddy -- someone to check in with and share with -- are you game? I'll leave it to others to advise you regarding the weight gain. My instincts want to tell you to not to worry. Everyone here seems to think they'll be "the exception," in terms of being able to lose the weight, but everyone seems to lose it. I wish I could be more helpful, but for all I know, I could be in your shoes in another week or so. Bunny

  21. February 2012 i had gastric bypass...I lost 95 lb...was very close to my goal wight. I wasn't able to get on track after surgery due to neck pain...and that turned into 2 neck surgery's...the first neck surgery was 4 months after gbp...the second neck surgery a year later...I was on different meds (including morphine) for 1 1/2 years...Then last February 2014 I spent a week in ICU with blood clots in my lungs. Well, it's now 2015. I've been off all pain medication and meds that caused 70lbs of weight gain. I feel I let my family down..but mostly myself. Is it to late?

    2016 Fall TV Season

Don't care. Surgery is going to give me an extra 0-50 years and I sure as hell am not going to waste them staring at the idiot box. Besides, I'm sure a huge portion of the people here can blame a good part of their weight gain on a sedentary idiot-box-watching lifestyle in the first place.

    Fluid removal

Speaking for my self only... These are the symptoms I had. 1.I was not able to eat any sort of solid food, no matter how small the bite was or how well I chewed it. I was only able to get a couple of bites down and then I would have the build up of saliva and have to go and visit the bathroom. 2. Once I vomitted I was not able to even drink water unless hours went by and if I drank to fast I had to visit the bathroom. 3. I was only able to get maybe 20 ounces of H2O a day and that is not good. 4. When I sent to see my doctor she said my band was so irritated that she took out a little more so the swelling and irritation could go down. 5. I was only able to eat ice cream and other slidder foods. 6. My doc said that in the red zone for the lap and realize band you have no weight loss because you turn to comfort foods and you don't have any weight loss and poss weight gain. 7. She has be taking a prilosec for 30days to help heal any irritation that was done. 8. I honestly was vomitting anytime I ate or drank something. 9. Often times when I went for a removal I was bummed that they had to take out fluid but, this time I did not care. I was just very missrable. I hope this does help you guys. And remember I am speaking for my self and not for others.

    Fatty Liver almost Cirrhosis

I did gain about 20 lbs in year 3 post-op, but a 10-20 lb rebound weight gain after hitting your lowest weight is very common. And to be honest, I think I look better at this higher weight, even though part of me would like to get back down there again! To maintain it, I track everything I eat and try to get some exercise most days of the week.
  25. I had my surgery yesterday and when I weighed myself today, I gained 5 lbs. Is this just water weight or weight from being bloated? I haven't had any "food" since Monday, so I can't imagine that it's actual weight gain. But, I have a heart condition and have to also watch my fluid retention, so I'm wondering if I should take a water pill or just let it run it's course over the next few days and give it a chance to leave on it's own. Also, when does the bloated stomach go down? The top of my stomach area is bigger than my bottom and I'm assuming it's just from the gas and swelling. I'm looking through my paperwork, but there is nothing there listed about looking bloated. I haven't had any pain in my shoulder, just around my port and getting in and out of bed has been a struggle. I'm finding that sitting in a chair is easier for me.
