  1. So my surgery is in 2 weeks. When I started the process I was 257. I am now about 240ish. So my clothes are already getting big. How long after surgery did people wait to stop shopping? Money is super tight for me right now and I don't want to buy things just to have them not fit shortly after. I'm thinking I will be living in sweat pants for awhile.

    Coffee again?

noradelgado84, Depends on your surgeon. I was able to drink decaffeinated coffee a week out with no sugar-used Stevia and fat free 1/2 and 1/2--which does have sugar. I wasn't cleared for regular coffee for three months. I had given up caffeine for several weeks before surgery and I'm very glad I did. Welcome to the "loser's" bench!! Kathleen

    First Fill

Well I had my first fill yesterday. Everyone was right. It was worse in my mind than the actual fill. My doctor put 4.4 cc in. I thought that was a lot for my first time but it is helping I don't feel as hungry as before and I really can't eat as much. To date I've lost a total of 28lbs. Wow! :willy_nilly: All in 6 weeks. When I started in Dec. of 07 it took me 9 months just to lose 14lbs. Then I gained it all back with in a month and half. The lapband is the greatest tool I could have gotten to help me lose the weight. I realize it's still me eating the right things and exercising the lapband just really makes me more conscious of what I eat and do. The lapband is'nt doing the work I am. Needless to say I still miss eating real food. Im so sick of protein!

  5. Congratulations John! 35 lbs in six weeks - that's six pounds a week - good for you!!
  6. I've noticed mine starting to slow down as well. Had my surgery Nov. 3rd and it's a really slow loss the past 3 weeks or so. Maybe a pound or two. I'm also able to eat more now and I've been working out in the gym the past 2 weeks as well. I'm trying to tell myself to just stay the course, which I will and make sure I do. Also, I'm now making sure I don't weigh myself more than once a week because I don't want to be obsessed with just the number (pounds). I can easily let that get the best of me and I will not let that happen. I don't know if this is the answer, but it's my plan. From what I've read on here, just stay the course, keep track of calories and don't obsess with the pounds. Good luck!

    Tomatillo Chicken Soup

Made this before being sleeved and in going through my meal planning the other day, I realized it is a perfectly low-carb meal - perfect for the cold weather! So we are off to watch a friend in a gymnastics meet and this is in the crockpot and will be ready for dinner when we get home. Good thing DD7 LOVES spicy! Calculated in MFP for a total of 8 servings, per serving nutrition information: 128 calories, 6 carbs, 2 grams fat, 27 grams protein! (If you add a little cheese or sour cream/greek yogurt as a topping, that will of course add to the calories etc.) Tomatillo chicken Soup Prep Time: 30 minutes | Cook Time: 6 to 7 hours (low ) or 3 to 3 1/2 hours (high) | Servings: | Difficulty: Medium 6 tomatillos, husks removed and rinsed 1-1/2 lb. chicken breast halves 32-oz. chicken broth 1 sweet pepper, chopped 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 4-oz. can diced green chiles 2 Tbsp. snipped fresh cilantro 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced* 1 T. ground cumin 1 T. lime juice 2 t. chili powder 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 t. salt 1tsp. ground black pepper Chop three tomatillos. Place remaining tomatillos in blender. Cover; blend until smooth. In a 3-1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker combine pureed and chopped tomatillos, chicken, broth, sweet pepper, onion, celery, chiles, cilantro, jalapeño, cumin, lime juice, chili powder, garlic, and 1 tsp. each salt and pepper. Cover; cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or high for 3 to 3-1/2 hours. Remove chicken; let stand until cool enough to handle. Shred chicken; return to soup. If desired, top with sour cream, additional chopped red sweet pepper or jalapeño peppers, snipped cilantro, and/or tortilla chips. Makes 4 to 6 servings. Help

The problem with goal weights is that your idea of where you want to be and your body's idea of where it wants to be can be different. I very intentionally never set a goal weight and my surgical team never suggested one. I decided that I would follow my plan for however long it took until my body told me it was where it wanted to be. And that's exactly what happened. I lost 130 lbs in just under 14 months and then it just stopped. My body was where it wanted to be. Today, a year and a half later, I'm within three pounds of that point. I never experienced any regain, often referred to as "bounce back". Sounds to me like your body is where it wants to be. Listen to it, love it and live it!
  9. I only went down 2.5 in the first week, and I had plication on top of being banded! Don't even think about the weight loss for a few weeks, and BAM! It WILL start to happen! liquids doesn't necessarily mean weight loss... right now you're doing it to heal! take care!

That's great news! Congratulations and best of luck. A couple of things I thought of real quick. I'm sure others will have some good suggestions as well. - Get your Protein drinks (I personally like Pure Nutrition Protein from costco....but I drank Boost initially for the variety). Others like unjury. Try a few before your surgery so you can pick the ones that you like best - Different broths and Soups - Crystal light - sugar free Jello Gelatin - Sugar Free popsicles This will help you through the initial days of recovery until you are well enough to do some shopping for mushies. The largest variety of each of these items that you can get the better. You are stuck on a boring liquid diet for a week or two, so variety will make it a little more interesting.
  11. Jackson is my Schnauzer & Mabel (short for Mabelline) is my mutt. Mabel chose us last summer & showed up when she was about 6 weeks old, outside of my chicken pen screaming! She is so loveable! I'm glad she chose us! They are so bad! I couldn't get them to put the toy down for a group picture!

    Using the Scale for Accountability

I'm 8 months out and until just last month I only weighed once a week, because of the freak out issue. Around I guess a month and a half I had a stall it lasted till about nine days ago. I started to weigh everyday. I had started working out really faithfully, and eating right, I knew I was doing the right things and somehow the freak out issue left. I know the closer I get to goal I will want to rely on how I feel, look more than the number so it is OK if I stall. My size is continuing to shrink and my shape is defining. I have lost 123 since August, went from a 5x to a xl top comfortably, 32w to 16/14. I'm feeling great and starting to finally "see" the changes. I really feel like weighing everyday will prepare me for maintenance. I've talked to my "skinny" friends most of them weigh everyday, most of them have a ten pound range that they allow their bodies the fluctuation that we all know we have, if they go five pounds up... They start to watch what they eat... Closer to ten really go strict on diet and up exercise until back in range... Most of them never get to ten because they are watching. Sorry for the novel... But this is a great question. I will be interested to read others comments. My stats SW 8/7/12 347 Cw 4/18/13 223
  13. I'm a tourer and an evening ride is rarely less than 20mi, I commute 23 each way to work when I can, and we'll do 125-250mi rides every other weekend. This is just my opinion in order of importance..... Fit---the seat too low, or too high, or too far forward, or too far back is one of the biggest culprits. It's all about physics. You have three points of contact....hands, feet, and butt. You need to find balance. Putting a little more weight on the hands can take major pressure off the butt. A pro bike fit might be overboard for most. Google "bike fit". There are plenty of great references out there. Saddles---Padding can be a problem. It compresses and bunches as you pedal and ends up in places you don't want it. The plain leather saddle or lightly padded gel saddle is a good choice. Bike shops will usually let you try a saddle for 30 days. Shorts/bibs--- you get what you pay for. Buy a national brand (like pearl Izumi) at a bike shop and get fitted. Spend $100. You'll be a lot happier and they should last for 5+ years. Oh...and don't wear anything under them!! Lube---an often overlooked gem. I slather either "Butt Butt'r" or Bag Balm on my parts. Call it a couple tablespoons. It kinda helps all the pieces down there slide into a comfortable spot. :-/ I hope this helps. Biking is such a great low impact activity because you can see a lot more of your neighborhood, it's practical (get a backpack and get a few groceries or run an errand) and almost everyone can do it. Have fun and be safe out there.

    Piercing pain on the left

I had pain in every section of my stomach and back. Go figure! But on the left side it's the port pain and my doctor told me it usually takes about 4 weeks. It's going away but I can definitely feel it and every once in awhile I get a twinge just to remind me it's there.
  16. Pics and nutritional facts at: food still and we’re tired of throwing it out or giving it away. One of the ways to make this happen was to buy smaller cooking pots. I’ve been using the Fagor multi-pot for pressure and slow cooking but it’s 6 quarts so everything looks really small–until you dish it out and then you realize you’ve made enough for an army of marauding Huns. So last week I bought a 2-quart multi-pot and scaled down our recipes. Just think–a pound of meat now makes 2 dishes, and each dish feeds us for 2 meals. It’s really hard to wrap my head around it still. So this week’s pound of ground beef was transformed to two dishes. A low-carb vegetable-meat chili , and a low-carb shepherd’s pie. I cheated a bit on this chili. I don’t usually use spice mixes, but this is an easy supper that takes 15 minutes to assemble, and we all have days where we need something like that. I’m also using frozen vegetables because we’re still buying too many fresh vegetables and having to throw them out, so I’m trying to learn to love some frozen ones in our diet. Ingredients 1/2 lb lean ground beef 1/8 c chopped onion 3 cloves of garlic 2 tsp coconut oil or ghee 1/2 packet ready made chili spice mix 1 c mixed frozen vegetables 8 oz can tomato sauce (not paste) 4 oz Water MethodUmm…put everything in your pressure cooker. Mix. Cook on high pressure for 6 minutes. Enjoy. Seriously. That’s it. You could also cook it a crockpot for 8 hours on low. I’m sure browning would help tastes, but I don’t think it’s entirely necessary.
  17. Congrats! I was able to go down 1 jean size last week and it was so exciting so I know the feeling! Great NSV!! PS - have you taken measurements? THAT is a motivator in and of itself, I promise!

    Flu Shot

I just had surgery yesterday and they emphasized that I couldn't get the flu shot for 3 weeks.
  19. So I see so many have a liquid pre op diet for weeks before surgery but my surgeon said I only have to do a liquid diet for 24 hrs before surgery and I don't know why everyone else has to do a week or more but my surgeon doesn't require it. Anyone have any ideas why? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hello from Michigan

Hi CJV, My preop wasn't much. They just went over my medical history, what meds I am on and gave me some instructions. No eating after midnight the day before surgery, no asprin or ibuprophen the week before surgery (or after). Not much more was said. I had my surgery at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI. I was in the hospital overnight. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My biggest fear was having the breathing tube inserted before I was put to sleep. The anestheiologist did have to insert the tube before I was asleep, but I don't remember a thing! I was up within a 1/2 hour of being woke up, I really had to go to the bathroom bad, and was not going to use a bed pan. It was a little hard to walk, but not a big deal. I was not given anything to eat or drink or except for Water while in, but I didn't want anything else. I went home less than 24 hours after my surgery and did well. The biggest advise I can give is after the surgery, make sure you drink, drink, drink. It was really hard for me to drink, and I am still struggling with it. I used to guzzle water and can't do that anymore, so I have a hard time getting enough down. I felt the effects of it too - felt like I was getting a UTI. Not fun. I did not have to take any pain medication after I got home from the hospital. I had some pain, but it wasn't that bad. Keep a pillow around. Cover your abdomen when you have to cough, sneeze or laugh. I also slept in recliner instead of my bed for the first week. I like to sleep on my side and it hurt to do so, so the chair kept me from rolling over! Where are you having your surgery? I was so excited about mine, everyone kept asking me if I was nervous, I wasn't -- I was just ready, ready, ready!!! Good Luck, Jody
  21. Dry skin flaking off the scalp and itchiness is referred to as dandruff. Dandruff is one of the most common scalp problem people are facing today. There are two main types of dandruff - dry dandruff and oily dandruff. Those with an oily skin tend to suffer from oily dandruff while those with dry skin suffer from dry dandruff. One of the popular methods of eliminating dandruff is by using anti-dandruff shampoos. But these shampoos are ineffective after some months. Nevertheless, you can cure dandruff naturally and obtain permanent relief from this condition. More and more people across the world are eagerly opting for the natural and herbal cures. There is now a very strong conviction among the general public that medicines extracted from plants and herbs used in antiquity for treatment are the best medicines, having no toxic or any other harmful effects on the human body. Natural cure, thus, forms the foundation of much modern pharmaceutical research, with more and more modern medicines being prepared from medicinal herbs and shrubs rather than synthetic chemicals. In fact, the negative effects of modern medicines and their toxic effects have led scientists to fall back upon natural products. Thus Cure Dandruff naturally is the best alternative treatment. Very often, people use natural cure for dandruff for just a week or so and as soon as the dandruff has seemed to have cleared, they stop the treatment. However, discontinuing treatment before the condition has cleared completely will cause the problem to resurface. So to ensure permanent relief it is important to continue using these cures until the symptoms are completely impassive.
  22. and are you at your sweet spot?? I have noticed that the Realize band may take more of a fill then the Allergen band. I'm a bit worried since I have 6.5 cc's in my realize band and I know I could still use a bit more. Not sure if its 1cc or .5 etc but I know I could use something where I have seen people with other bands hitting goad with 3 or 5 cc's in there band... Just wondering..... I know we are all different, etc... I go for another fill on Monday. I'm only 9 weeks out and doing great but just wondering....

Food ideas to bring to work?

I grill 4 chicken breasts at the beginning of the week and depending on how big they are...I divide them into 2-3 ounces. I pack them into containers and then pack something else with them to go in my lunch box. The side will be something like sliced cucumbers or an apple or green Beans or a little salad. I find that if I have something cooked and ready to go, it is easy to add a side and I am good to go for a meal. I tend to work long hours so I always pack something extra, like cottage cheese just in case I need something. It really has made all the difference in staying on track with food. Good luck on finding the "thing" that works for you.

    Checking In..i Need You!

I was put on 'full liquids' this week so I'm starting to feel more 'normal' again. I just never thought it would be possible to get to 140 or 150 lbs. Mind you I'm still 203 right now, but I'm trucking on that direction and gonna get there! Not sure when, not sure how, surely bumps in the road, but gonna keep trucking on. Thanks for your tips everyone and your experiences. I'm unsure of the road ahead, but appreciate your stories/tips/etc to give me an idea of the journey.
  25. Today marks exactly two weeks since I became sleeved. But, I seemed to already become 'stalled' in my weightloss. I have only loss about 25 pounds since I started my two week presurgery liquid diet to today. Not sure if this is normal - but it certainly is frustrating! Guess I was expecting more at this time since I am basically still on a liquid diet. I have however, been having a problem getting down enough protein. I have tried various types - but not found one that I could use regularly to get all that I need on a daily basis to increase weightloss. Does anyone have any tips, suggestions for getting in enough protein? What liquid supplements do you recommed that are palatable? Tried 'Whey New', not a fan. 'Premier Protein' is not bad. Please share your suggestions. Thank you!
