  1. I had the sleeve done five years ago. I got pregnant eight months after. I lost 88 pounds from the sleeve and gain to 60 back. November 14, 2017 I had the single anastomoses duodenal switch. I lost 14 pounds the first two weeks and have not lost but have gained 1 pound in the last two weeks. For those of you out there that I’ve had this done has it been successful for you? Is the weight-loss slow and steady? Can you share some of your experiences

    October sleevers?

You can do this! I'm on day 10 of my pre op diet and if I can get through this without a "cheat", you sure can! I also a revision patient. Just keep reminding yourself that it's not worth it. You want to set yourself up for success and you don't succeed if you start out by finding ways to sneak around the rules. It hasn't been easy, but when my stomach is growling, I remember why I am doing it. Drinking lots of extra fluids help fool an empty stomach too. Good luck! October sleevers?

Today begins my two week liquid diet. I was excited until I woke up this morning hungry lol! I'm going to do my best to stick to the program and not cheat. My liver really needs to shrink because I am a revision (band to sleeve) patient and my liver and stomach are stuck together from scar tissue... I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I'm hoping for the best! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. **********NECROPOSTING ALERT*********** I TOTALLY MISSED THIS WHOLE THREAD Probably because on 7/15 I was in the hospital being revised from VSG to RNY and NOT FOR REGAIN 😂 I don't know why others post the way they do but, the reason I chose to include that bit of info is because: I didn't want to assume everyone knows my whole story (some people may have just joined that day etc) I wanted to be clear as possible so when some one runs a search for info here on BP they find exactly what they are looking for I wanted to share my specific experience and because the stories/ questions/ support/ techniques/ insurance rules/ *plans/ *preop /*postop may change vastly depending on why you need a revision its not helpful to lump it together. Can you imagine being asked nonstop in DMs if you lost all of your excess weight then having to explain you didnt have any excess weight/ you were at goal already Or never being asked if your stenosis was properly bypassed/GERD resolved/ torsion corrected/anatomy fixed because no one knew that was the reason for the revision. Or telling people that insurance approved it in 48 hrs, but not explaining that it was likely because it was emergent in my case and highly unlikely to get approved that quick or even the first time on a weight regain only case. For me it was about clarity & I hope my input helped 💙
  5. I am having my surgery on April 30th. I am having a 360 degree tummy tuck, fleur de lis, liposuction, hernia repair, muscle repair, and port revision. Surgery will be around 6 hours and my PS is sending me home the same day. I'll have a 45 minute drive home and then another 45 minute drive back the following afternoon to check the incisions. I'm a little worried about going home so soon, but he says most people do really well and are able to go home the same day. I hope this is the case. Congrats on your surgery. It sounds like you are doing really well. I will be anxious to see your pictures when you are able to post them. Take care and get lots of rest. Cathy
  6. Does any know the criteria for Tufts for a revision from sleeve to bypass? I suffer from terrible reflux and need some relief. The medication doesn't work anymore. I do not fit the BMI and I don't have diabetes, sleep apnea or cardiovascular issues. Thank you Sent from my LGLS991 using BariatricPal mobile app

    June 2014 Dates!?

Congrats to everyone who has commenced their journey, I've not yet posted but started reading bp as the nerves are setting in, I'm having rny on Friday 6/6, I'm in Australia. I had a gastric sleeve in 2011 and needed revision, I could eat too much fro day 1 and reflux was horrible so this is the only solution for me. Lucky I have a great surgeon although he is never the chatty one, he breezes in and out and always minimises concerns so never get the support and reassurance I would like at the moment. I've joined the Facebook post op group so hope to speak there soon. Looking forward to starting to hear from people as they come out of surgery. AJ
  8. Was banded in May 2010 by the guru Paul O’Brien in Melbourne. Didn’t follow his golden rules and frequently overate, vomited and cheated with shakes and lollies. Had revision surgery yesterday to correct pouching, and ready to go again.....this time with a better attitude towards the tool! 93kg, BMI 35.4
  9. Many folks that select VSG either don’t reach goal, do not get resolution of diabetes long term, or develop GERD and end up revising to gastric bypass. I recommend RNY so you don’t have to have a second WLS down the road. Good luck!

289 Lbs To Go. Is It Even Possible?!

One of the many reasons I went for the sleeve was I revised from the band and it is less risky to go sleeve versus RNY. The first surgeonI saw felt my BMI was too high for the sleeve expecially considering I had already "failed" at a restrictive only surgery. Well, my BMI was 52 at time of surgery and I didn't fail with the band, it failed me. I found a surgeon who believed I could do well with the sleeve and I have been very successful with the sleeve. One of my fears with the rny was that living with a "pouch" would be similiar to being banded which was awful. i don't vomit after eating with the sleeve and can predict how much food I need to eat without over earing. Maybe the rNY is the same way, but I had such a bad experience with a pouch... Anyway, you know as well as anyone that starting up so high it is going to be really hard to get to a normal weight BMI. So what, being a few pounds overweight is AWESOME compared to being 150-200-300 pounds overweight - at least in my book anyway!

    February Surgery ?

@Aodhanmom that's exciting!! I'm in Kansas! I'm soooo excited. My insurance kept telling me I would need to do the whole 6 month diet thing but it had been removed from their policy that was just revised so my surgeon office decided to just send in the prior authorization just to see what they would say. I'm so pumped and ready for this new life!!!!
  12. My doctor's office and I have received verbal approval from ins. co. for my surgery. In order to get a surgery date, my doctor's office requires a written letter. The letter was mailed on 9/18. Hope it arrives on 9/25. I am a band to sleeve revision patient. My ins. co. waived the six month supervised diet criteria due to band complications. Looking at a 10/8 if available by the time I get written approval. If that date is unavailable I will have to wait until 10/25 due to work obligations.

fill freebies - how many do you get?

I got 6 pre-paid with my surgery (self-pay). But since none of the fills went in, and I ended up having to pay out of pocket to revise the surgery.. doctor didn't charge me for his revision surgery and for right now I have 'infinite' free fills.. probably till I make that $2,000 back the hospital charged.
  14. I'm glad I ran across this thread....I had lapband 3 years ago, been dealing with a slipped band for about a year, have gained 25 lbs back. I am devestated. My doc wants me to revise to a sleeve, but I am self pay. We are not rich people and it was a HUGE sacrafice for me to come up with the money for LapBand, no way I can come up with another 14K and be able to look myself in the eye, not when my husband works so hard, we have 2 little boys to take care/plan for. I am beginning to think a conversion to a sleeve in Mexico might be a real alternative for me..... but a little scary and still expsenive. Thanks for all the info and comments.
  15. I took a lock with me and locked those things in my suitcase while I was in surgery. You are given a private room. I went alone also & was a band to sleeve revision. I had no worries & felt completely safe.
  16. Hello again OCC Sleevers! I have NOT been able to speak to drs again, but through the grapevine it appears that the sleeve is the recommendation for lap band revisions. I am looking at a surgery date of either Monday of April 14 or 21.... Anyone from here having surgery those days? Also, this is a huge group of posts... Anyone remember which ones contain all the best pre-op info or where is the best place to get it? OCC sends a bit if limited info on the pre diet, but I know the forums are where the details are Thanks for support and replies to this post Rhonda
  17. I also did very little research on plication. The reason I chose not to is because I live in a fairly small town in Texas. I was afraid it was too new a procedure for my local surgeons to know about. They don't offer it and if I had an emergency post op and couldn't get back to Dr Ortiz, I was worried they would not know what to do. Also my regular dr does all my health needs and I didn't know if he would know enough about it either. But on the plus side of the coin, a girl I was picked up with at the airport had plication the same day I had sleeve revision, and she was released to go home a few days before me and she said she had no pain. But my pain was also minimal. I just took liquid Tylenol and it was enough.
  18. I had gastric plication with Dr. Ortiz about a year ago. I felt very comfortable with the facility, staff, etc. But, afterwards I was still hungry--like all the time. My general doctor suggested I get a test (can't remember the name, but you swallow barium and they can see the stomach) to make sure my stomach hadn't opened. What it showed was that the stomach wasn't in the shape of a banana, but the top part was completely open and the stitches started from the middle down. That's why I was still feeling hunger. I send the CD of the images to Dr. Ortiz per his staff's instructions and heard absolutely nothing back. Nothing. Apparently they are great but you better hope there are no complications because you won't get any support. I ended up having a plication revision with Dr. Waldrep in Thousand Oaks, CA. He folded the top part that Dr. Ortiz left open and added another fold. And, there was constant support, including a call from Dr. Waldrep every couple of days to check on my progress. Even though revision surgery is usually more complicated, the cost was almost on par with Mexico, so I really wish I had just had the procedure with Dr. Waldrep to begin with.

    LapBand VS Sleeve??

I don't think sharing personal experiences is a negative thing. I truly wish the band worked for me the way it did for the few people I know personally that have done well. Now that many people have had the band placed for 3-5 years, we're hearing about complications that SOME are having. With any new surgery, this is bound to happen. If I were considering the band today, I would want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. That is exactly the approach I took when I decided to revise to the VSG. I'm sorry you see this as a bad thing.

    LapBand VS Sleeve??

I do think the band is on the way out. So does the Lap Band manufacturer. I think they have changed the band to every possible option and there are still very big problems with it. Slips and erosion are not decreasing, erosion is staying the same and slips are increasing. I think people should have all the information possible about all surgery types so they can make the best choice for them. Don't you think? And this IS a thread asking about bands vs. sleeves. Why wouldn't sleeve folks post here? The rate that mods are revising to other surgery types is about standard for band revisions globally. Don't you think there is a reason so many doctors, hospitals, and even the country of Chile isn't banding anyone anymore? I don't care which surgery someone gets as long as they have information on all surgery types. Then they can choose what is right for them.

    LapBand VS Sleeve??

I did a lot of research on the band before I had it and on VSG before I revised. Here are two peer reviewed studies: Comparison of weight loss and body composition cha...[surg Obes Relat Dis. 2009] - PubMed Result A 10-year experience with laparoscopic gastric ban...[Obes Surg. 2006] - PubMed Result I DO believe the band is working for many but I also believe it's failing others who HAVE followed the rules. As they say, there's good and bad in everything.

    LapBand VS Sleeve??

In my opinion - and it is just that, an opinion - the band is not on the way out. For some strange reason the experience in the USA seems to be very different to that here in Australia. Why I have no idea. Now I am not saying that it is problem free here but the percentage of problems here seems to be a lot lower and it is still the preferred surgery. Maybe it is because aftercare here is easily accessible and not expensive. Maybe it is because Australian Dr's prefer a conservative rather an aggressive fill schedule. maybe it is something else. I know a number of people here that have had their bands for longer than 3 years and are very happy. I know of others that have had them a lot longer. Some have had to have them replaced but they chose to have them replaced not to revise to something else. It may turn out that the sleeve is the perfect WLS surgery. It may be discovered in the future that there are problems with the sleeve that are not yet apparent. They may discover some other magical cure.Whatever. Whatever the future holds we don't know. But in the meantime the band is a safe and effective surgery and it should not just be written off. The most important thing as has been said many times before is to do your research and find the WLS that suits you. Pick your surgeon very carefully and then make sure you stick to the recommendations that your surgeon has given you.

    Sleeve or band

Add me to the list of band survivors that would urge you to just say no!!! Lol I too am revising. My date is set for May 11th. I have actually had TWO bands because of major complications with my first band. Now after complications with my 2nd I am finally revising to the sleeve. It has been 10 long years. I am counting the days until this thing is out of me!!! Best of luck whichever you choose, but I would definitely say the sleeve is a better choice in my experience. Check out the complication and success boards on both Vertical Sleeve Talk and Lap Band Talk... That should be more than enough to make up your mind. There are risks with both surgeries of course but there are FAR more long term risks with the band and much more long term success with the sleeve!

    Reflux Poll

I ahve been banded since September 2007 and i cannot tell you how many times I ahve had this problem. My band gets too tight I get reflux, over and over again, filled and un filled now today the new Dr. said my band slipped and that I have a mega esophagus, well how does he know he has not ran any tests on me. He said I needed to have surgery a revision, she said I could die if my esophagus ruptures. He said that he will only fill me but it will be up to the origianl Dr. to operate on me. Scared well yes I am but I have calmed down since this morning. This Dr. only does banding and sleeves. Do you think he is looking to make a buck on me or what? I don't even know if my federal Health Plan BC/BS will cover a revision or not/ I ahve lost 100 plus pounds but still considered obese due to my height and weight I am 5 2 and weigh in at 180 pounds but I can wear a size 10/12 so in that area I am whereI want to be. I ahve not lost any weight since May 2008 I have maintained my weight. I ahve had say 6 or more barium Upper GI's since I was banded and nothing but problems. HELP
  25. Hi All! I'm new here...sorta. I gave an intro on another post here a few days ago. I mostly read and absorb all the posts. I'm a revision from lap band to RNY. My surgery date is June 4th. Thurday I had my last pre-op appointment. I found out I actually have to do a 2 week liquid diet. Booo! I had already geeked myself up for 1 week now I have to give myself another pep talk. Ha! Of course I have a graduation party 🎓 and a BBQ during those two weeks😔 I'm definitely ready to get this show on the road. June 2nd is my pre surgical appt. with the anesthesiologist. My Dr. recommends I take 4 weeks off. That will give me a chance to get my eating together and quite frankly I'm looking forward to the break from work😏 How long are some of you planning to be out off work?
