  1. Hey guys, I was hoping some of you more seasoned (or even not so seasoned but better at it than I am) bandsters could give me a few pointers about measuring food and food amounts. During my post op diet phase I was very diligent about measuring all my food, but then it was easy to measure yogurt, pudding, cottage cheese, you get the drift. Now that I am into "regular" eating I have a hard time measuring stuff. I was hoping for some pointers... how do you measure your lunches? dinners? I have no restriction and NEED to start figuring out how to measure food again. An example of my food in a day: Breakie - Protein shake (easy to measure) lunch - half a bun-sandwich (bunwich? lol) dinner - sushi until "full" Usually breakie and lunchs have been the same thing for me other variations of dinner would be like an omelet or something. How do you measure that? I'm so confused on how to measure my dinners. I'm having a hard time with these with no restriction and I hate hate hate hate hate cooking. Please help, I'm getting so discouraged and I don't get my first fill until Mar 10. I gained 4 lbs back in the past week.
  2. I am trying to eat very small bites and chew thoroughly, but I'm having problems with PBs with EVERYTHING except grits, oatmeal, yogurt, and soup. Anyone else? I am really, really frustrated. Especially because I am up 4 lbs. WTH??!

    Feel like I'm slug

You really need to take care of yourself. 2 very important things for you right now is hydration and protein. I would make a protein shake in the morning and add some greek yogurt or extra protein if you can. Take it with you to work and sip on it as much as possible. Also don't let yourself get hydrated or you will end up in the hospital. You need to be proactive with your diet as far as the sleeve is concerned. Your health depends on it. I wish you the best on your journey!!

    Trouble going #2

I have been having the same issue so I called my Dr.'s office. They told me that I can take milk of magnesia... I'm having surgery on Tuesday & was concerned about not having gone for like 5 days! TMI, I know.... My diet since Oct. 2nd. has been 3 Protein shakes & 2 diet yogurts... SF Jello/SF popsicles.

PRE OP Weight loss Mind Games

True.. I have started to drink a 16 ounce water on the way to work.. before my coffee and breakfast. It has really helped get my liquids in earlier and feel full. Sometimes that water is a protein water.. and then I have protein shake in my coffee.. all before I attempt to eat that egg, or 2oz of yogurt or cottage cheese LOL I cannot wait till next week I can add in pancakes.. low carb ones, with protein powder added.. silver dollar size is what I will be able to handle I am sure..

    Yogurt

Hi all. I hear a lot about using plain yogurt in making a variety of foods. I'm still learning how to broaden my options and would love some variation. I'm 4 weeks post op and still on pureed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    skipped purée stage

Mine was similar. Post op, they had us on 3 week liquids and then transition to soft. They said they don’t do purée stage because they don’t want us to get use to slider foods (soups, yogurts etc.)

    Noobie Questions

It really is different for each individual. I can only tell what I experienced from my Gastric Bypass surgery on Nov 8th. I felt the gas the first few days but no real discomfort to me. Sometimes just changing position would help. No pain per say but I walked a lot around the house and honestly was too tired those first few days to take the dog for a walk. No problem sleeping (I sleep on my side anyway). They gave me pain meds to take home but I never needed any. Speaking of tired, remember you will be recovering from surgery so you will be worn out. Rest, rest, and recuperate. My first 2 weeks was a "full liquid diet" where I lived on protein shakes and yogurt. My focus was on healing, getting protein, and fluids. Again, I experienced no pain, no GERD, and very little constipation. By the 2nd week I had more energy, so started taking the dog for a morning walk again ( she is so Happy!). Still not hungry! 3rd & 4th week was my "pureee phase" and again no pain or complications. My energy was still increasing however I made sure I was active in the morning because the afternoons still saw my batteries running low. During my 4th week I added my Airdyne stationary bike to my routine after the morning walk. Then had a 2 week "soft textured" phase which I am entering the final week. Still no pain or complications. Still learning the "full indicator" (when to stop eating) and trying to find foods that I want to eat (especially in this phase). Still not hungry but I have become aware of when my actual stomach and not my head says "feed me". Looking forward to the "Bariatric regular" phase starting soon. I honestly feel that these previous phases (including pre-surgery) have prepared me for the long run. So in summary, I personally did not experience any difficulties or pain with this surgery but am enjoying not only the weight loss but the healthy lifestyle. Also, my blood sugar & BP are normal without any medications for the first time in decades. Listen to your bariatric team, stick with the plan and you will be fine. You are going to have great 2023!

    Drinking and restriction

I just wanted to check in and see how everyone's hunger level was, and what their restriction was like. Right now I can drink a 12 oz Protein drink made with Water and ice no problem. It fills me up. I am happy and full. I drink a lot of protein; it is my main staple. It will help get me through these last 2 days of liquids without going nuts and eating the cat. (I am just joking I would eat the dog first he has more meat on him.):hungry: Is anyone else drinking a lot or am I the only one? I also find that I feel more hungry with each passing day. I am not sure I could sit down and eat a full meal, but I am snacking on low cal yogurt and pudding here and there. Or I am adding an extra Protein Drink when needed. I have a very limited diet plan, but I am finding very hard to stick to now that I am hungry. I am sticking to the items and most of the time the quainties, but I am eating more frequently, snacking, and adding additional meals. :hungry: Is anyone else experiencing these issues? Or should I just give up and start chowing down on the pets?:heh:

    Hey everyone! :)

I have been banded for a little over a month now (yay! 35lbs lost) and I have found whenever I am hungry even after I've eaten 3 small meals a day I would eat either string cheese or Greek yogurt. It has really helped me doing so because if I don't snack I'm afraid I would turn it into a buffet style meal. Willpower is key in this Chris (Banded 4-15-2016 @328lbs)
  11. I'm getting a little nervous here... not going to lie! Band came out on 11/24- I'm just able to pick up my 2 year old in the past couple of days... Christmas and then BAM, surgery. So today begins my 1 week pre-op diet. My surgeon has us on liquids, Protein shakes and small healthy Snacks like greek yogurt or sugar free Jello and 1 modest meal (small portion of protein, very plain, and veggies). So not the worst. At least it allows some wiggle room for having a little Christmas dinner... my FIL's beef wellington is amazing! Had Nutrition class last week, and I stocked up on Vitamins and a new pretty Water bottle (it helps). One of the things they mentioned is how tired you are after bypass... so, how long was everyone out of work? I've got a very easy job, I can literally sit in a recliner for my shift. How long until you were up to doing a load of laundry? Or going shopping? Driving? Sex? Housework?

    Gaining

I started carb counting and restricting the amount of carbs I ate after I went to a Drs appt and only lost barely a half pound. I journal everyday and have My Fitness Pal app. I have lost 10 lbs since 4/8 last Drs appt. I do really well with restricting my carbs when Im disciplined. Ive just started my pre op diet so I am hoping to lose alittle more before surgery day. I was eating low carb, low fat and high protein diet. I eat mostly fish and baby spinach, baked or boiled chicken breasts, salads sometimes. broc and Ill eat alittle cheese at times. I have been now switched over to the preop diet oh and I was previously eating the Ratio Protein yogurt to bump up my protein.

    Road trip!

You can carry a small 6-pack cooler with cheese sticks and yogurt and freeze a couple of Water bottles before you travel. As far as non-perishable items, you can carry almonds, small tuna pouches, bananas and peanut/almond butter. There's always the option of stopping at a convenience store along the way. Happy travels!

low carb yougrt with a lot of protein?

We've been buying the mixed variety packs -- strawberry and blueberry, at costco. But, I just scoop out the yogurt, and leave the fruits on the bottom. The lab has her morning ritual where she gets to lick the container clean. I mix in blueberries on my own. I don't carry for the syrupy stuff they use.

    newbie questions

Well, this is my second time to reply to this thread...the first time my response was deleted when I hit spell check. : ( Oh well, here I go again: 1. how long did it take before you returned to eating normal food -- My doctor had me on liquids for 2 weeks. After that, he had me on shredded and mushie food. Basically I had to food process my approved foods to the consistency of cole slaw for 2 weeks. He had me do that to learn what the consistency should be to help know how much to chew. 2. are there some foods you still can not eat??? -- I only eat what my doctor told me to eat, so I'm not really sure if there are some things that I can't handle. I'm primarily eating Protein (chicken/fish), vegetables, certain fruit, yogurt, etc. 3. did you really give up diet pop??? -- Yep! The hardest for me was giving up sparkling Water. I still crave one, but I've done well with it. Like the other poster, I drink a lot of crystal lite now. There are a lot of flavors, and you can keep it with you and use it in bottled water or at restaurants. 4. how long did it take you to learn to chew your food??? -- probably a week...that wasn't difficult for me. Of course, I've only had one fill and it may be harder as my band is more and more restricted. 5. is vomitting a part of your new life?? -- I have not vomited even once since my surgery. 6. how long after surgery did you return to work?? -- One week (it seemed a little fast for me...it was hard going back to work, but fortunately I have the most understanding boss in the world and she would make sure I left early or worked half days my first week back. Good luck in your decision. I hope my answers have helped. I just encourage you to really think about why you want the surgery. It is not a magic fix. You still have to make the right choices. You just need to view the band as a tool to help you through your journey. I wish you all the best!
  18. An unflavored protein powder added to something you are already eating would only add 60 or so more calories instead of 280 and still let you get daily protein. This next sentence will get me a lot of hate mail but some doctors are a little overboard with the protein number they tell you to hit. I dont know what target you are trying to reach but try to add some powder to oatmeal or a yogurt you were eating anyway and see if you can get daily calories down to a number that makes you feel more comfortable. You have to live with the choices and if they are making you uncomfortable you need to make adjustments to ensure you can do them forever. this is not a diet you do for a few months these are life long changes and you need to be all in mentally to keep it up.

    3 weeks post sleeve

I was sleeved 4/10 and I'm on soft/pureed there's no way i could put down 5oz much less in 5 min. Today i had 1 egg for breakfast, a slice of deli Turkey and a small piece of cheese for lunch, and 2tbsp of yogurt for snack. i can get down 2tbsp of food as long as i take small bites and go slow. I would slow down on the intake 3weeks out your stomach is still healing i would be afraid of eating to much and creating a leak.

    Snack after dinner

I make up a batch of protein Greek yogurt at the beginning of the week and have some each evening, usually with a tablespoon or two of low-sugar granola or crushed nuts.

    Tight

This is kind of a touchy subject because there are those of us who don't believe in being too tight and those who love being really tight. I think liquids are fine for a few days, see if you loosen up a little. When you eat are you eating really small bites (dime size) and taking your time between bites? But, if it doesn't change I say go in for a slight unfill. You need to be able to eat because PBing and throwing up can lead to complications and band slippage. You can also consume a lot more calories in liquid. Also, it's just not healthy (in my opinion). I can eat most anything, I have no problems with any protien, bread, Pasta,... I don't eat a lot of things that are unhealthy except on rare occassions because I know that a diet with lots of these things is not going to be productive but when I want a slice of pizza... I can have one. I think if I could not eat solid food I would induldge in things like yogurt and icecream and anything that went down easy and really never be satisfied. The band should supply restriction but it is also there to help create satiety. Listen to your body, glad you called your doc. Best of Luck

All food tastes bad since surgery.

I drink a chocolate muscle milk light every morning. Cannot tolerate eggs. I eat fish or chicken at lunch. I have a dannon light and fit Greek yogurt with a scoop of unflavored Protein and a shot of MIO. I eat a string cheese if I think of it and my dinner is fish or chicken. Oh and super steamed and mashed broccoli. Everytime I try something new it just doesn't work. It gets stuck or feels gross. Just not liking food these days.
  23. Wannalise - I can totally relate ... My son works part time in a grocery store while going to college. His main area is the dairy department. A woman the other day was looking at some Greek Yogurt and asked his opinion. He told her that I was interested in the yogurt as well since it was high in Protein and good for WLS patients. Without knowing him or my situation, she went off on him. Kept telling him that I didn't need surgery and that I was taking the easy way out. To say the least, he was really upset. He knows my struggles and my family history. He totally supports my decision. To think he was sharing something he was proud of and to be assaulted by a complete stranger. How am I going to handle this type of "conversation" once I'm sleeved. If someone asks, I will be honest. If they "protest", I will let them know that they need to do what's right for them just like I had to do what's right for me. Don't know if that helped or not, but that's my plan. Congratulations on your decision. If you need support or encouragement, there is plenty of that around here. Welcome.

    Anemia

I was diagnosed with mild anemia post op and have been taking OTC 65 mg. I would highly recommend taking Vitafusion Gummy Fiber to help keep you regular. I also add unflavored Benefiber powder to my Greek yogurt. A lot of Bandster have constipation issues so make sure to get in a lot of fiber.

    Sliders

Hi Brit, Sliders are 2 things: 1)foods that can pass through the stoma without much resistance or 2) foods/liquids that can help normal foods pass through the stoma easier. Examples of sliders are liquids, foods that melt into liquid state, or solids that have lots of liquid that helps it pass. Foods that pass easier: any drink, milkshakes, icecream, yogurts, Soups, chocolate, Cookies, sometimes cake (usually any junk food ahhah) Foods that help foods pass easier: sauces, dressings, broths, applesauce, (there's tons of example and I hope others will share theirs..but this is a good example to derive from) While on topic..a side comment Sliders are often referred to in a negative light. Examples are drinking your calories to avoid getting stuck. You tend to consume more calories if you do liquids (think milkshakes, junkfood) and people often either gain weight or are not getting the right nutrition. However, sliders are also a +. For instance, I usually have trouble w/ chicken no matter how well I cook it. But if I put just a little bit of sauce, it's enough to help it slide through (not quickly but it doesnt bind and eventually get regurgitated) (same w/ pork chops and applesauce . This is a huge PLUS and we should be mindful of how to use certain foods to assist us if we have trouble foods that are actually good for us (like chicken)
