Weight Loss Challenge: Thanksgiving to New Years

Holliwags!!! Congratz on TWOderville! Well done! Time for some new pictures??? I have to say, I'd be telling my doc to go jump in a lake if he had me on 6 months of mushies and liquids. I got the band so I WOULN'T feel hungry, and here your doc is, not letting you even USE your band....AND he's FILLING you and there is NO WAY he can know if you're at good restriction, underfilled, or overfilled if you're not eating solids. I'm sorry if I'm being offensive. I know most of us are very protective of our surgeons...but come on! The whole purpose of the band is to STOP the hunger by letting us EAT small portions of REAL food and feeling FULL! Again...I'm so sorry for my rant, but I feel for you...I have SO much respect for you for staying on liquids and mushies for over 5 months! You have SO much more will power than most!! 2. I had surgery on a Monday, came home on Tuesday and drove on Wednesday. I had to get the kids to preschool - there was no WAY I was keeping them home with me!! I think it depends on how you react to pain killers, and whether or not you feel you will be able to quickly hit the brakes if you have to. I've had several surgeries on both ankles and hands, and have become very adept at working around surgery and meds, so the mild stuff that was given to me really didn't affect my reflexes or cognitive abilities. So, to answer your question, I'd keep the appt. Just absolutely, positively DO NOT lift the kids. Don't even think about it. (I taught my 3yo how to climb in and out of her car seat a couple weeks before my surgery so all I had to do was buckle her in. It made all the difference.) ETA - the biggest trick that worked for me was to fold a really soft baby blanket (I had a nice polar fleece one) into about a 10" square and put it between the port incision and the seat belt (it happened to fit nicely just above where the buckle goes at the right angle at your right hip when sitting). It made driving 300% easier. I drove that way for about 2w. -m

  6. Hi Everybody, I am a June bandster and would like to join you all here. I have fiddled around and lost about 40 pounds since my surgery in June. The past month I just haven't paid as much attention as I did in the early stages and now I would like to get serious about dropping another 20 pounds by the end of the year. I would like to have an average loss of 10 pounds per month so I need to kick it up a notch. If you would like to join me in this challenge just copy and paste and we will keep a running total. Weight Loss Challenge: Thanksgiving to New Years

OK...I can't wait hehe...I'll update my current weight on Thanksgiving day, if there's a drop from my current weight I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade here...but there is only 5 weeks and 4 days between thanksgiving and new years day...keeping with 1.5-2lbs average per week...it would be difficult, not impossible, but difficult to lose more than 10-15 pounds and 15 pounds is a stretch for most. Yes, we want to set goals that challenge us, but at the same time being realistic. PLEASE don't take this the wrong way...I just don't want anyone to be disappointed or feel like they've failed if they don't make their goal. Hope I didn't offend anyone :phone: I think you are all amazing people and I admire all of you! :car: Name........Challenge start wgt.......current wgt.....chall. goal.....To go. 9. Michelle - thanks for posting! My first challenge was Labor Day to Thanksgiving - I really didn't know how motivating it would be, but it really was. I was disappointed when I couldn't change my number and the first thing I wanted to do when I made it was sign in and update it! This challenge will be about 5 weeks, so I think I will go for 10lbs. That would put me at 101lbs lost from June, so I would be happy with that! Name........Challenge start wgt.......current wgt.....chall. goal.....To go. My renaissance.....

trace10.. What I mean by restriction is that I'm hungry just like before I got my surgery. No I'm not on mushy foods. I was on liquid for the first week and mushy for the second week, after that it was soft solids. At the moment I am able to eat anything that I put in my mouth. It might be different for you as every doctor is different. Some people will have restriction for longer than a week and some will not. I was hoping I was one to be restricted till my first fill but unfortunately not. I lost 10 pounds on the first week and a half, but after that, once the swelling went down I was hungry all the time. Now I just have to watch what I eat and for the most part I'm just maintaining my 10 pound lost. This is why I said that I can't wait for my first fill, I need restriction. I will not complain because I know my time will come and I'm just so happy that I had the surgery. I hope this help and good luck on your new journey:smile:

    Swlc Or Slimband......

Well said Lynn. Follow-up care is so important and you do have to work with the band. There was a very interesting article in the National Post the other day. http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/10/13/thick-to-thin-gastric-band-weight-loss-clinic-denies-allegations-of-putting-patients-at-risk/ Good luck with your surgery. If your in the GTA area and would like to meet for coffee I host several coffee groups. I post them here or you can e-mail me. The coffee groups are a great way to connect with other bandsters at all stages of the journey. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss; 156 lbs tomander@bell.net

    Got Bad News

Good luck to you! And thank you - you are a hero. I can tell you that I always had a hard time losing weight. Been dieting since I was 10 yrs old. But... my little tummy has made dieting so much easier. Some days I eat more than others for whatever reason but it’s much much less than I was pre surgery. Other days I’m not that hungry and I’m quite good with my food choices. I’ve lost 64 since aug 22. You can do it. Don’t worry about your doctor. They don’t understand how it feels to be us. I have found that hot water and lemon helps with water retention as well as pure cranberry concentrate mixed with water- from whole foods. Good luck! HW. 289 SW. 284 Height. 5’8

Fill #1 - 3/6/07 - 2.2cc's Fill #2 - 4/17/07 - 3.0cc's Fill #3 - 7/6/07 - 3.5 cc's (I think it was only 2.5cc's because when I went back for fill #4, he could only w/draw 1.8 cc's) Fill #4 - 7/20/07 - filled me back to 3.0 ccs - He should have filled me more! Fill #5 - 8/17/07 - 3.4cc's Fill #6 - 10/08/07 - filled me to 3.8cc's - the best restriction I've ever had,but still could eat big bites of food, so I figured I needed to be tighter. Fill #7 - 11/21/07 filled to 4.0 cc's. By the evening could not hold anything down, not even my saliva. PBing all night - horrilble experieince UNFILL #1 - 11/23/07 - unfilled to somewhere between 2.5 to 3.0 cc's - NO RESTRICTIONS AGAIN :Dancing_wub: Fill #8 - 1/18/08 Went in and the doc filled me back up to just right under 4.0, according to Flouro, it was perfect. Well, by next morning, could not hold down saliva again, ended up back in hospital UNFILL #2 - 1/19/08 - Doctor had to unfill me to 3.0 again because of the swelling from all the PBing for being too tight. Again, NO RESTRICTION - :present: Fill #9 - 2/12/08 - 3.5 cc's - was tight for about a week, now feel lose again. grrrr, still have "some" restriction, just not quite enough! Next fill scheduled for 4/7/08 - I hate that it takes sooooooo long to get in to see the fill doc. FILL #10 - 4/7/08 The doc just added .4cc's, making me at 3.9cc's. I think this might be the one! FILL #11 - Was scheduled on 6/25/08 - but the doc did not fill me up, I was leaving for a cruise on 6/27 so he didn't want to risk me being too tight, so did not get a fill. FILL #11 - 8/5/08 Went for a fill, this time the doc took all my fill out and all he could get out was 2.4 cc's. Filled me up to 4.0 cc's, I left, had to go right back because I could not drink, he took out a little over .2 cc's, he said I'm somewhere between 3.5 to 3.7 cc's. - I had great restriction for 2 weeks, but It has now loosened some. I feel I might need a tad more. I'm worried I have a very slow leak. UNFILL #3 - 8/5/08 - Took a little over .2 cc's out, had pretty good restriction, but still a tad too lose. FILL #12 - 9/17/08 - Added just 1/10th of a cc - I think I'm somewhere between 3.8 to 3.9 cc in a 4cc band. I am hoping and praying this is the fill that I stop with! I do not have another appointment for another fill, will wait this one out and see. Fill #13 - 10/06/08 - Doc added about 2/10's of a cc. He took everything out and put it all back in and said I was about 3.7 to 3.8cc's. - which is where he said I was last time. FILL #14 - 11/10/08 - Doc took everything out and I had about 3.6cc's, which is pretty good. He then filled me up to just under 4.0cc's I believe I'm about 3.9cc's. I ate some canned peaches and set around the office for a bit, made sure none came back up. Seems to be doing good so far. I hope this is my last fill! FILL #15 - 08/10/09 - Added about 1/10th of a cc. I think I'm right at 4.0 cc. Wt on the morning of my fill was at 165. But was very bloated from steroids I was on for the previous week. FILL #16 - 8/31/09 - My last fill lasted 2 weeks then I felt wide open. Went in for another fill, this time he did not take any out and just added 2/10th's of a cc. I think I'm just a little more than 4.1 cc's in a 4.0 cc band. I feel great restriction so far. I'm hoping this last. I'm sick of fills. lol. :bye: - I could tell my fill was wide open, I was starving all the time, wt at the time of fill was 170! grrrrrrr FILL #17 - 10/30/09 - completely drained me, checked for a leak - no leak YAY - added 4.6 cc's - I feel like he didn't add anything, feel wide open! Hungry all the time FILL #18 - 11/09/09 Doc did barium swallow test - I think he thought I was full of it. He saw what I was talking about and agreed I was way too loose. He added 2.5cc's. I feel restriction again, but not a real tight restriction. I have no idea where I'm at these days and I really don't care anymore how much CC's I have, I just want RESTRICTION!!!!!! Fill #19 - 11/23/09 - I had a some restriction, but not enough, the doc added 3/10ths of a cc. I feel pretty good, not too tight, which means it probably will get looser. I will ride this fill out and see what happens. Very discouraged at this point. FILL #20 - 12/28/09 - did not take any fluid out, just added 4/10th's of a cc. Still feel lose, but on the fluro it showed I was tight, so we'll see how it goes.........

    8 day post-op report

Well I just returned from weighing in and lost 10 lbs. this first week following surgery. That combimed with the 14 I had lost the week and a half before surgery comes to a total of 24 lbs. total loss. I know I have to increase the activity to keep losing. So this week I will begin walking daily.
  17. Hi All! I am a newbie here, I have stalked a lot of threads but never posted. I am on day 7 of my 10 day liquid diet and I have lost 14lbs so far, but I did cheat a little last night and I have been beating myself up over it all day long. I even had a dream that I was told no for my surgery Wednesday because I didn't loose enough weight. I am terrified and as soon as my daughter wakes up from her nap I am going to bit the gym at full force with what energy I can gather from the sole liquid diet:/ I don't want to sound pathetic, but I have been seriously obsessing over what the scale says every day and I don't want to get to the date that I waited so long for and my surgeon tell me he can't do it:/ anyone else feel this way?
  18. On top of looking slimmer, you look 10-15 years younger. Wow.

    On vacation

On vacation with my husband and am eating like a crazy person. Still eating little portions but eating things I know I shouldn't! Eating out for every meal. Ice cream, bread, had a drink at dinner tonight. I am feeling a bit out of control and although at the moment I eat something I shouldn't I enjoy it I Immediately feel horrible about it afterwards. I did walk 4 miles today so I hope that helps combat the Chipwich I just ate at 10 pm I am really disappointed in myself and afraid that I will start going backwards and never reach my goal. Thanks for letting me vent.
  20. Hey there... Lisa's back and ready to chat, chat, chat.. Where O where do I begin ?? My "last meal". I felt like Jesus at his last supper. The Friday before my surgery after eating very good for two months I had the wonderful " I will never eat like this again meal". I went with my daughter to Hurricane Grill and had 3 Conch fritters, 1/2 chicken wrap, few chips, 1/2 chicken fajita and OH YES a Sangria... TOTALLY off my diet but I was going to go out with a bang if I wasn't going to eat for the next two days. Saturday was an OK day. I got to have a "no chew" diet of Yogurt ( with no fruit in it), Protein shakes and sugar free pudding. Sunday was a little harder as it was a "clear liquid" diet of Chicken broth, Water, sugar-free Jello and Vitamin waters. I ate my last bite of jello at 12:02 and then that was it until after the surgery. I didn't have to wash with any special soap or use listerine to cleanse my mouth. I showered, shaved and went to bed. OH on the bag note.. YOU will pretty much need NOTHING in the hospital. What did come in handy was pull-up toilet wipes ( for personal hygeine), Lip Balm b/c you can't eat anything at all for two days, No slip shoes b/c you will be walking and about 20.00 for the phone/tv hook up. Other than that you are provided with a gown, socks, tooth brush, tooth paste, lotion for your legs and arms, any "food" your allowed to eat. You sleep 75% of the day and the rest of the time you are being poked, prodded and bugged by nurses. Woke up early on Monday morning, dropped my daughter off at cheer camp and had my husband drop me off at the entrance to the hospita at 9AM. Some people invite people to sit with them.. I just wanted to have peace and quiet. He was a nervous wreck. Advice... if your spouse/parent/sibling is more nervous than you don't have them with you unless necessary. I walked over to admitting and got my paperwork put throu, went to the admittance area and had my urine tested for a pregnancy test ( NOT ). Ended up waiting for 4.5 hours in the waiting area. About 8 other people were taken for various surgeries before mine. UGH what a LONG wait. Finally was called at 1:20. Was given a great comfy cozy blue gown with these terrific interesting slits in them ( for surgery ??) and some fuzzy "no slip" socks. My stuff was put in a bag and labled with my name. I went to sit in the nurses office where I was poked and prodded trying to find my vein. And this was the "good nurse". Finally the officer came to take my things, I was given a blanket and reclined back to take a nap until my name was called to go back to the Operating Room (OR). Apparently my name was called but they couldn't find a stretcher for me b/c the next thing I knew the OR nurse came to the front nurses station asking how long I was going to take. UH.. I had been ready since 2:10 and it was now almost 3PM. My Doctor and Anestesiologist came to the nurses station to ask if I was ok. Doc made me sign my last consent form to do the surgery and the anestesiologist asked if I had any concerns. I said " Uh yeah. When are we going to get this show on the road?? Can't I just walk to the OR ".. He laughed and said in his Russian accent " I like this one. You want to walk... well lets go". What a nice little parade it was me being led by the Doctor, Anastesiologist, Head OR nurse and an assistant. It all seems like a dream but I walked right into the OR, smiled at the attending nurse as she said " SHE WALKED ??!! Never in 10 years have i seen a patient WALK into the Operating Room" LOL. I hopped up onto the table and said " Now what??" They told me to lie down with my feet against the foot pads, I put my arm out onto the extendable arm rest and the anestesiolagist said " We're going to give you a cocktail mairtini now" I said "Sir... If its a chocolate martini give me a double".... AND THAT WAS THE END OF MY PRE SURGERY LIFE... According to the calls to my hubby from my doctor I went into surgery at 3:20 and was out by 5:10. Apparently I got the 2 for 1 special... I had a hernia in my abdomonial wall and my intestines were poking out... in addition to the gastric sleeve. Come three hours later I wake up super groggy like "Holy Cow it was over !!" I looked at the clock and it was about 8PM. I was not feeling any pain at all just super groggy from the anestesia. I woke up about an hour later with a clearer head and just remember asking for my cell phone. I planned to call my hubby to let him know I was OK and tell my daughter goodnight. By 10:30 the phone still hadn't come so I asked the nurse to wheel me to the nearest phone and let me call my daughter. LOL Persistant little bugger I was. She got me a phone and I spoke to the hubby. Daughter and mom were sleeping. I have NO IDEA what my conversation was about I was still out of it. My throat was a bit sore from the breathing tube they put down my throat but not worst than a dry throat. Next thing I know I was being wheeled into my room and my roomy ( who was one of my nurses at the baratic center who also had her's done the same day) was calling my name. I said " Hey Stacy.. welcome to the other side" and passed out again. The nurses do not leave you alone for the entire first night. They check your blood pressure and temperature every two hours. They poke you will small needles every six hours to give you medicine to thin your blood ( choice arm / belly ) and you are not allowed to eat anything. UGH. Thank goodness my "swallow test" was the next day. I was given 3 cotton swabs flavored with Lemon that tasted delicious ( but later when I tried them taste HORRIBLE ). I slept on and off that night and the next morning. Funny thing was.. there was no pain. I read this on another persons report but really aside from the "fear" your going to rip something you don't feel any pain. it is mostly just an ache. Mainly in one area where they remove the remaining stomach from. Mine is still tender three days later. You do get a little button to push to get meds when you need them but for the most part the only real uncomfortable feeling is the gas left in your bloated stomach. Oh the other gross thing was the catheter. I mean it didn't really hurt persay but its not comfortable. When they wake you up in the morning the nurses made me sit up in a chair to get my blood circulating and that damn thing hurt when I sat down with it. In the morning the doctors came in and looked at my gross belly then it was time for my test. Woo Hoo. The swallow doctors took a general xray of my belly area. They then handed me a cup, laid me on a tilted table and told me not to drink it until they said. They left the room and I swallowed it. The doctor could see the gross tasting 1oz of liquid run down my esophogus and into my stomach. She repeated the test and then it was over. I was cleared to eat. NO leaks. YAY !! Good news one.. good news two I got to get the damn catheter out. OK so we don't feel it going in ( for ladies) b/c we are sleeping but when they deflate it and pull it out feels like a burning UTI. So not comfortable but it's only for a second and then its gone. Only sucky thing is its replaced with peeing on a "hat" thing that fits into the toilet so they can measure how much you are peeing and how much fluids you are intaking. Back up to my room. More blood pressure and more temperature taking then it was lunch time. Ohhhh what's for lunch... Oh joy... a 3 oz cup of yellow jello, a 3 oz cup of chicken broth and 3 oz of crystal lite lemonade. Ohhhh before you get so excited you can only have 3 oz TOTAL of these three. So the first meal was 1 1/2 oz of chicken broth and 1 1/2 oz of jello. I was also allowed to drink water non stop as much as possible. That night I was able to sleep a little better and was only bothered twice in the night by the nurse. The day passed pretty uneventful with another visit from the doctor and not too much sleep. The next morning my doctor cleared me to go home so after another Breakfast and lunch of broth/jello I got to go home. WOO HOO !!! And so begins my new life after Vertical Sleeve surgery... Short recap of since I've been home... Got out of the hospital and told my hubby to go to McDonalds... ( GASP.. Not for me silly people for him... LOL). He ordered a Big Mac meal with a soda and large fries. I sat there with my bottle of water and watched him eat. What I used to love now became disgusting. I have been eating just my Protein Shakes for the past two days and haven't been hungry at all. It's all been fine and you will be fine too. Still a little sore on my biggest scar but it will pass in time. Hope you all enjoyed my story. Take care and Good Luck to all.. OH BTW... I've lost 8 pounds since Monday. WOO HOO !! I'm on my way !! Oh kind of what to expect after surgery. The two incisions on my left ( close to each other ) are where they took the rest of the stomach out and are the ones that bother the most. The other 4 I don't even know are there. I was closed up with surgical glue so it will fall off over the next two weeks. No scars except 1/2 " to 3/4" lines. YAY !!!

    Pain after surgery

I have a sore abdomen, like I've been doing crunches for a while. And I get occasional gas pain but it's not unbearable. (Surgery 10/03) Sent from my SM-G920P using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I did a food funeral too. It was bad but Good! Now, after 10 months out I see I m not deprived on food. I can eat any thing I want but choose not. One thing I didn't go all out because I was afraid of being an open Lap. Long scar during my surgery. Good luck!
  23. Today is day 2 of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I'm to have four shakes per day. To be honest, I'm friggin hungry. And I'm consumed with thoughts of food. My surgery is on 10/26. I figured this would be the hardest part, but man it sucks. Anyone else out there? Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Frequently Asked Questions - Weight Loss Surgery - What is the honeymoon period? For about 6 to 10 months post-weight loss surgery is the time when it is the easiest to lose weight. Outside of the dreaded stalls, weight generally tends to fall off magically. But eventually the body becomes adjusted to the lower caloric intake and adjusts it's metabolism down. So it's vitally important to take advantage of this "honeymoon period" to stick to your doctor's dietary guidelines and lose as much weight as possible. After the "honeymoon period" it is still possible to lose weight, but it will require more vigilance on caloric intake and diet, being careful not to fall into old habits, and increasing exercise levels to maintain your metabolism.
