  1. I'd I spell that right? I'm curious. Have any of you used these during the early stage when the surgery weight was bloating you? It's not on my " never use" list and I was thinking it might help eliminate the bulk and pain in my midsection (from below the breast to the top of my legs) . I feel and look like a starving baby from those commercials that I always turn off cuz they break my heart. I know it's swelling and Water weight gain from 22 days on ivs in hospital, but it's fairly not comfy..I feel 15 months pregnant!

    4 month VSG Post-op

At 8 months the weight loss stopped. I was stalled for 4 months. Weight gain started around 13 months. I just re did the math and I am 16 months out now. My wife and I have a baby mid July and I have put on 20 pounds since then. I am sure some of it is stress eating, but that is no excuse. Most of it is due to poor choices and lack of exercise.

    1 Year Post Op Failure

I'm in the same boat. I didn't gain 20 lbs but did gain and feel terrible about it. I have decided to start from the beginning again. It's frustrating and depressing to see the weight gain but I know I can do this! I just have to get back in the right mind set. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. I just gotta throw this out there. These drugs taken for appetite suppressant are not entirely "without serious side effects". Pherntermine is an amphetamine that has very similar effects on your heart and central nervous system as cocaine. Would you take cocaine to lose weight? At the very least, you are getting high each time you take one, and Long term use of appetite suppressants can result in convulsions, heart arrhythmias, heart disease, high BP, and death...even when taken at the prescribed dose. As for the antidepressants, my mom was rushed to the hospital twice for tachycardia and fainting. Turned out it was the anti anxiety medicine they prescribed for her. My younger brother died from a heart arrhythmia that the medical examiner attributed to the Adderall he was taking for ADHD. The amount in his blood stream was normal, therapeutic levels, but after an extensive autopsy and toxicology screen, that was the only plausible finding. He was 42. And, BTW, he was adopted so this is not a "genetic" thing. The other point I'd like to make is that appetite suppressants simply do not work as a long term weight loss solution. We KNOW this or we wouldn't have needed surgery. Sure, you'll feel great (why not, you're stoned) and lose a few pounds. But as soon as you stop taking them you are right back where you started, fighting your appetite and weight gain. Sure, drugs are another "tool" we can use, but all the tools in the world can't build a house without lumber. Our heads and ability to make good choices is the concrete foundation AND the lumber required for our lifetime fight with obesity. That is what we need to work on, not short term, temporary Patches.

    Too much at once?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I had my bat wings, moobs, and tummy tuck all in one go. I'm now 19 days post-op. I had 6 JP drains. The 2 in my arms and the 2 in my chest came out after a week. The 5th one in my groin got clogged somewhere around 2 weeks, so it was removed. The last one is still draining about 85cc / day of a slightly yellow, mostly clear liquid, so I really doubt it'll come out at today's visit. The day after surgery, they tried to stand me up. I passed out, probably because of low blood volume. Because of that, I spent a total of 3 days in the hospital, but by the end I was doing laps around the nurses' station. I had a button for pain meds & an IV antibiotic while I was in the hospital, plus Norco (hydrocodone + tylenol 5-325). A Norco every 4 hours actually worked better for me than the button, and that's exactly what my doctor prescribed for me to use at home. I also tried 500mg tylenol to see if I could get off the harder stuff sooner, but nope. I went from Norco every 4-6 hours down to just a Norco at night, down to nothing. I've been off all pain meds since day 15. The scale numbers are just plain depressing with all the fluids (and probably weight gain from being out of the gym),. My shirt size is now a men's medium! I was somewhere between a large / XL. I started working from home at day 14. I'll start going back in to the office on a regular basis once this last drain is out. Here's some tips I learned: You need lanyards for the JP drains. The nurses will pin them to your hospital gown, but once you start showering, that does you no good. Amazon sells a box of 25 for under $10. Use Glad Cling-wrap once you've only have a drain or two to keep dry but have otherwise healed up enough to shower. Don't be afraid to cut a hole in the butt of your compression garment for #2. My particular compression garment looks like a men's one-piece swimsuit from the 1920s. It has clasps and a zipper down the front. It also has a hole in the front for #1, but no flap in the back for #2. Especially with drains in your arms, it'll be hard to get in and out of the garment to use the toilet. The compression garment I got tended to roll up my thigh and cut off the flow, so my thighs collected a lot of fluid. A bed wedge or pillow + workout tights under the garment worked wonders for this. I wish I had a tip for getting rid of the glue from all the bandages. Nothing worked. I tried water, soap, ice, oil, and rubbing alcohol. I had to scrape it off with my fingernail.
  6. I am just starting solids and have been terrified to eat much because I don't want to see the scale go in the opposite direction. I have read numerous times that the body is healing and that one should not worry about weight or weight gain. Because I am already losing slow and it would hurt my poor lil feelings if the scale says I gained weight. I am easily discouraged and feel that if I see a gain when I am trying I would be devastated.
  7. Oh woowww..yayyyy.! Congrats!!! Thanks for sharing this info. I was soooo, concerned Bcuz I was thinking it wouldn't work. But, have ur metabolism boosted up since the surgery? And did u experience any weight gain after the surgery
  8. I know there are pros and cons for the various types of WLS as well as pros and cons for trying to do it on my own. Reading the various opinions here reinforces that. And they are good for me to see. Like WLS itself, I consider all of this information to be a tool to help get to where I want to be...healthy and fit. I do have a lot of confidence in my surgeon and the entire group of people associated with his practice. I visited both of the notable groups in the area and researched what they do and the outcomes. All things being essentially equal between the groups, I selected this group and surgeon because they feel right. Ability to talk about everything and bedside manor are also important to me. Right now I am facing the major test as to whether I will opt to do it by myself or proceed with surgery. My sister is having surgery for breast cancer on Tuesday. My father (88) was taken to the hospital Friday and admitted for breathing difficulties. He has emphysema and this is his first major setback. We normally share responsibility for him but it is all on me this time. I have and always will be a stress eater. If worrying about both of them and having to go work on top of it, doesn't trigger a weight gain I think I may have a chance to do it myself. So far I'm not doing so good. :-) Not as bad as I used to do but definitely not good. No decisions will be made until some time in October/November and a lot will depend on results of upper GI. Thanks again for all of your input!

    Counseling/Therapy

Casey, From my understanding they do not ask many questions. I have never gone through a therapist for approval but I heard they whip you through there. Personally, I wish I would have gone through therapy because I truly believe once you have made it to your goal, the mind, MY MIND changed dramatically and I thought that I needed it then. I don't doubt that I still need it now. In fact, it wouldn't even hurt my husband to go through therapy as I consisently hear, EVER SINCE YOU LOST YOUR WEIGHT, and EVER SINCE YOU QUIT SMOKING......... He is having a tough time. What he doesn't realize, in which I have told him was, you will never understand throughout my life what I have gone through and you will also never understand how much I love you for putting up with me and how lucky I am to still have you since I went through weight gain and weight loss with him. All the time that I bought clothes and then threw them out because they couldn't fit me anymore. Skinny, fat, skinny, fat..........and, he never had a weight problem in his life. He needs therapy as well as I do, still because I still have tough times trying to accept and be happy with who I am. Big huge life change is headed your way as long as you commit yourself. Just remember the most important outcome of this whole process and that is to become healthy and live a more happy life. You can get through this and we are all here for moral support. Josephine

    May 2015 Sleevers?

We're sleeve buddies -- I'm the 6th, too! I'm with you as well, I'm not a snacker, and I don't love junk food -- it's the quantities (I LOVE to cook) that got me where I am today, so I'm really looking forward to enjoying a healthier relationship with food in the years to come. You're a health care professional, and I'm a certified group fitness instructor and Pilates instructor (though I haven't taught in 18 months due to weight gain) -- proof that even those that know better can be fallible. Best of luck to you next week -- we're on the home stretch!!
  11. I’ve been making myself a little crazy and losing sleep worrying, so I’m hoping I can get some of your thoughts on this. I’ve completed my six months of medically supervised weight loss appointments. I’ve had the sleep study, EGD, psych eval and all of that jazz. I called my doctor last week to ask how long it should take to hear back regarding scheduling my surgery, they said that they have to submit everything to my insurance company and then it will take 2 weeks to hear back after that. Okay, that’s all good, but then I did a google search for my insurance company, “McClaren” and “Weight Loss Surgery.” And I found a website for a hospital here in Michigan that does weight loss surgery (not one I’m going through, just a random one that my Google search found), they listed requirements of a bunch of different companies, including mine. For my insurance company it says that they require a “Medically Supervised Diet for 6 Consecutive Months. food & Exercise Journal, Showing a consistent weight loss with no weight gain.” Here’s the thing, the last month of my supervised diet, I gained weight. I’m not sure why. I’d had the flu for a couple of weeks that month. I wasn’t eating much, I really expected to lose but didn’t. So, has anyone ever been denied coverage because they didn’t do well during their MS diet? If so, what happens? Do you have to do it again? The whole six months over again? Is there an appeals process? My insurance coordinator at the doctor’s office isn’t very familiar with my insurance company, in fact she said that this is the first time she’s worked with them. She’d told me that they want to see you “lose a few pounds, here and there.” I’m totally freaked out about this. Could I have totally blown everything in one bad month? What do you think?
  12. @@heidikat72 About the patient that gained 1 lb...is that the total amount of weight gain for the whole 6 months? Or was their weight fluctuating and they gained 1lb and then lost it? I hope I'm making sense because they seem like they make more sense when I say them out loud as opposed to typing them lol. At my weigh in today, I gained 1 lb from last month. I have my period now and that 1 lb is most likely Water weight. I called my patient liaison at my surgeon's office and she left a message that said something along the lines of "if your weight evens out at the end, you'll be alright". I'm just hoping that when I submit all of my stuff to the insurance company, they don't look at this 1 lb gain as me not trying to lose or something.
  13. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-stones/basics/risk-factors/CON-20024829 Dehydration. Not drinking enough Water each day can increase your risk of kidney stones. People who live in warm climates and those who sweat a lot may be at higher risk than others. Certain diets. Eating a diet that's high in Protein, sodium and sugar may increase your risk of some types of kidney stones. This is especially true with a high-sodium diet. Too much sodium in your diet increases the amount of Calcium your kidneys must filter and significantly increases your risk of kidney stones. Being obese. High body mass index (BMI), large waist size and weight gain have been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones. Digestive diseases and surgery. Gastric bypass surgery, inflammatory bowel disease or chronic diarrhea can cause changes in the digestive process that affect your absorption of calcium and water, increasing the levels of stone-forming substances in your urine.

    Sucessful "unfill"

Suddenly, my band tightened. Self diagnosed, I went to a clear liquid diet. It did not help, it became more uncomfortable and I could not get water down. I was also having regurgitation in my sleep. It was very unpleasant. I had an emergency appointment to relieve the pressure in my band. Immediately I felt relief. It took a few weeks for the reflux to subside. However, it did. My appetite never increased, nor did I regain any weight. I see many members suffering from "tightness", yet sacred to have any fluid removed in fear they will regain. I just want to confirm that a decrease in fluid from the band doesn't mean weight gain will occur. I remained in the "green zone". Please do not refrain from getting an "unfill" because of fear. The relief is priceless.
  15. Oh my just weighed myself today. I have gained 4 pounds can’t seem to get them off I do not know what to do. I am exercising and eating right. My surgery is February 7th. I am so worried that if I don’t lose the weight they will cancel my surgery. Any one ever had surgery cancelled? I am to start my period (sorry TMI) soon and I think that is why I am bloated, but will they understand that? Any advice?

    Sleep Apnea and Sleeve Surgery

I also have sleep apnea and have had it for quite awhile. I'm on my 3rd CPAP machine and I have to tell you ....I've never gotten used to it. I am quite anxious when it comes to having anything around my head and face and though I know there is forced air pressure, I feel like I am being suffocated. I never found a mask that was comfortable, and believe me, I've tried dozens of them!! The nasal pillows are by far the best or at least easiest to tolerate. All of my doctors stress how dangerous the Sleep Apnea is.. not to mention that it causes weight gain and could slow down you weight loss after surgery. I do try to use it but I have to say I am not 100% compliant and I remove it many times in my sleep in the middle of the night. I can only relate my experience, I don't know how to make it easier for you...all I can say is try it. A friend of mine was hesitant about using a cpap until his doctor showed him the video of him sleeping. He flipped and flopped all night like a beached croaker. It made a believer out of him and now he is sold on his CPAP. Maybe it just takes getting used to. Good luck.

    Shopping????

i'm lucky to have the hourglass shape, and i love being short, but i can't wait to be truly petite. all the women in my family are tiny (none of the men are heavy either...except my dad..we are the only ones). anyways, my mom is 4'10" and most of her life she weighed 85 lbs (she is a nice healthy 120 now, and she thinks she's fat :faint:..haha..she still wears a size 5...but i do joke with her that she just might be considered obese now.. (haha..she has bad health problems and really doesn't need any extra weight, but her new med's caused a quick weight gain..she always sayed things to me out of concern..so now i'm returning the favor..although she is almost 50 and i would rather her be an older woman with some meat on her bones...). anyways..back to the subject, i have a cousin who is the same as my mom 4'10" wears a size 0, a sister who has had 4 kids and is 5'0" and half my size...lol. only one girl in the whole family who is taller than me..... so, i'll be glad when we can go to christmas gatherings, etc., and i won't feel like the giant (hhahaha...it's hard to believe i'm the giant at 5'2").
  19. @@VSGAnn2014 I actually found this article very encouraging. Just think, this lady had tremendous success. Chances are, considering her pre-op weight and age, she would not be alive today if she had not had surgery. And she kept the vast majority of it off for a long time. And then, after a relatively modest weight gain she took action! I view this like a car or appliance-- sometimes things need a little tightening!

    Doc says no fruit--EVER

Fruit has never really been an issue for me with weight gain, and my program doesn't say to avoid it. I've been throwing a few cherries, an inch of banana, or a couple of slices in with my protein smoothies, just for variety. I'd rather have that than sugar free syrups, but I'm more of a "natural foods" person.
  21. Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve been on these boards! I was sleeved in 2011 and am now scheduled for revision to MGB in June. my question is directed to those of you who chose revision due to weight gain, not because of GERD, not that I don’t appreciate the view points of you all who revised due to GERD but because I really want to hear form folks whose primary reason for revision was to address weight regain. i am almost back up to my highest weight pre sleeve and I see such mixed results. What has your experience if you had revision to actually lose weight? Was it worth the expense? Did you get the results you were hoping for?

any one ever cheat on liquid phase?

I've just had the get go to start mushies as of yesterday, no real restriction here. I can eat a cup of food without a problem so I have to consciously measure out my food and limit it to that. But I'm not finding that a problem since I have nowhere near my ordinary hunger levels still. During the liquid phase I first tried the Protein Shake thing as the basis of my intake, it didnt work for me. Never liked those things, never will. I just blended real food very smooth - I made good hearty soups with lots of veges and lentils, I even blended up lasagna with extra tinned tomatoes, I put a little cheese in and blended that too - 3 squares a day of real food just in liquid form. That way I felt great and had no hunger issues. I've been very satisfied with my weight loss and I also believe I havent set myself up for rebound weight gain when I start solids since I've been having the same food, just blended, all along. I also have stayed regular, no constipation, as I've been getting fibre etc too.

am a FAILURE in my weight-loss journey

Make sure and talk to your doc about which antidepressant he/she puts you on... I have been taking amiltriptyline for years and it seems to work the best on me (over the many many others I've tried over the years) but one of the side effects is weight gain and craving for sweets! That was one of the reasons my insurance approved my surgeory. Try not to be a discouraged, you can overcome anything!

Totally frustrated and don't know what to do

Yes, that's exactly what he thinks. He thinks he's given me all the necessary time to devote to getting myself in shape, so he doesn't understand why it's not my #1 priority in life. Getting in shape and looking good so I don't want to hide in the house all the time is "putting my marriage and him first". He views my whole weight gain as me not loving him enough to want to look good for him, to put us back on the path of an intimate relationship, etc. I understand that, but I've resisted doing anything "for him" because of the tough love approach he has taken as his way of "encouraging me". I would get a job, but I want the weight gone first. We have enough money that I can have the surgery, and I even have my own money with an advisor, I just hate doing this behind his back. And once I do it, I doubt he will respect me not wanting the world to know. He's all about having integrity and being honest. Ugh I can't stop crying about all this

any sleevers in their late 50's

I am 53 and will be sleeved tomorrow morning. I am so so happy to see others my age have such great success. I was banded in 2011 due to early menopause weight gain that I could not seem to lose and an uncontrollable appetite. I would eat and be able to eat again in 10 minutes. I knew what this was leading to since I seen others in my family suffer from illnesses due to obesity. I just did not want to go down that path but could not do it on my own. The band worked for a short time. I lost 50 pounds before it started giving me issues. Ultimately I just was so tired of slimming I wanted to get it revised. So here I am! I pray all of us have great success and health in the future.
