    European Sleevers Where Are You?

Welcome Belgian Guy! Actually I'm American (although at the moment not that proud of that fact!) but living in Amsterdam....and yes, there aren't many of us here....but a few. A pity really because I could use some support right now. I am 5 years out and in the last year gained almost 3K. I'm freaking out a bit espeicially with the holidays coming up.

    European Sleevers Where Are You?

Hi Niisi....welcome to our little group...hoping more European sleevers will join. I just met (ex) biggirleurope yesterday! We met at a little cafe here in Amsterdam and it was great to get to know her. Congratulations on your weight loss....exactly the same as my new friend...what part of Switzerland do you live in? I am in Switzterland a few times a year. And as for the drinking with meals, that will go away at some point. I am almost 5 years out and can drink and eat anything...(not such a good thing really). Enjoy your first year, it truly is a honeymoon! Let us know if you ever get to Amsterdam.
  3. Today I am 1 week out on a revision after 2 failed lap bands. My journey started in 2008 with my first band placed in March 2009 and slipped December that year. This past April I had another slip and had to have it removed. I had a few more surgeries in between in joint replacements but finally got my by pass last week. I have been dealing with nausea and had to make a trip into ER for IV fluids. All is well so far and I am looking forward to finally making progress on permanent weight loss without all hassle that comes with the band. Thank you so much for your post, it came at just the right time to know that I have made the best decision possible and that I too will be successful. Congratulations on your achievement, that is a wonderful gift.

    Post Op Calories

No. Not with the bodybugg. It's a completely different thing than the fit bit. I looked into the fit bit, but I don't trust anything that you clip on your clothing to be accurate. The bodybugg is worn on the arm, against the skin. It measures skin temperature and motion. These devices can also vary in accuracy for specific people because there is some variance in metabolism. I found that I was either overestimating my caloric intake or my metabolism was slightly faster than the bb measured. I usually lost slightly more weight than my numbers would have indicated.

    Post Op Calories

My base recommendation is 1300/day. I'm about 5'8" and am built like an ox. My goal weight is 180. I will need to increase that when my activity levels are higher. Right now, pre surgery, at 285, my laziest day burns me around 2300 cal. (I use a bodybugg that measures my caloric output)

    MT. RIBIDOUX HIKE YAYYYYY

Thanks Pam The weight loss helps soooo much! Of course it doesn't repair the damage already done, but it totally takes the pressure off of the knees. 1 pound is 7 pounds of pressure on our poor knees. Believe me when I say my knees love my sleeve too.
  7. I told the doctor that at least two people told me that their asthma did not lessen with the weight loss. They were very surprised. I am soooooo looking forward to tomorrow, in either case.

How do I know if I need one?

Hi Hollie, Congratulations on your weight loss!!!!:thumbup: Many plastic surgeons will do "virtual consults" where you can begin the consultation process by sending photos via email. I suggest that you contact some Dr.'s who offer this service and who you might be interested in working with if it's determined that plastic surgery is the best course of action for you. Good luck!!!!

    Recovery?

Do you have a surgery date yet? You may have read in some of my other posts that I'm not a big fan of goal weights. My surgeon never offered one and I decided even before my surgery that my body would know when it was where it wanted to be. So I just kept following the protocol until my weight stabilized. I believe there are several advantages to this approach. When you have a goal weight in mind, it increases your impatience and frustration with the time it takes to reach your goal. If you don't have a goal weight, you're not on any timeline - you won't know you're there until you're there. Much more conducive to focusing on the all-important lifestyle changes as opposed to some "magic" number. WLS patients often experience a weight regain following their weight loss - commonly referred to as "bounce back". It can be as little as 10-15 pounds or, in some cases, considerably more. There can be a lot of reasons for it but, at least in my experience, if your body is at the weight it wants to be at, there's little or no bounce back. I stabilized at 155 and my weight this morning (13 months later) was 152.8. And that's after increasing my daily calorie goal following the stabilization of my weight. Initially by 300 calories. And most recently I increased it again by an additional 100 calories over what I was targeting during weight loss. Finally, not having a specific goal weight takes at least some of the emphasis off of the number on the scales. That's a big deal. And one of the reasons I always recommend folks who are in the rapid weight loss part of the journey weigh themselves no more often than once a week. When you hit a stall, once every two weeks is even better. No matter what we do, our weight loss is going to fluctuate in response to too many variables to even identify, much less address. Downplaying the number on the scale and focusing your energy instead on staying positive, staying focused on following the protocol as closely to the letter as you possibly can, staying patient and maintaining a food log is a much more rewarding and much less stressful plan. You're gonna love the new you!!
  11. If anyone ever says I took the easy way out to losing weight I'll kick their butt! Banded on the 11th, ill for 5 days before being hospitalized for three more. Finally stopped dry heaving and feeling faint. Tried eating a tablespoon of mashed potatoes- stomach grumbling was INTENSE. Panicked cause I thought it got stuck. If didn't, my esophagus is just sore from all the dry heaving and the EGD ( scope) I had done on Tuesday. This sure wasn't anything like I thought it would be. But on a better note, I am feeling much better this morning and slept through the WHOLE night. Probably cause I had something other than hot Water and gatorade in my stomach. I did lose 22 pounds and counting. Right now, I am averaging about 2 pound weight loss per day. I know it will slow down once I can start eating more. I see the surgeon on Wednesday who plans on trying to advance my diet from clears to soft/pureed. And I don't know about you guys, but I don't think I can ever even think about drinking broth again! Yuck! Hautemama
  12. Day 2 and 3 post op was miserable for me! I was so swollen and bloated that I looked like the Michelin Man with a tire around my stomach! Gas X and lots of walking is the only thing that helped me. I gained as well right after surgery. Here I am 6 months out and I have lost a total of 64.8 lbs. I would do it all over in a heartbeat! I feel better than I have in years. I am no longer diabetic nor do I have have high blood pressure anymore! No meds for me! Just hang in there and things will get better. Be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster you will find yourself on through this journey. That is the one thing I did not expect myself to go through. I "knew" how the band worked before my surgery and "knew" that the weight loss is slow and steady...but, for some reason I found myself "expecting" entirely too much of myself too fast. I still struggle daily with that even though I "know" I have really done great with my weight loss thus far. We are our harshest critics. Once the swelling goes down in your stomach after surgery..you will find that you are really hungry and will probably be able to eat as you did before just not to the same extent. Realize that is normal until you get your fills started and reach restriction. I have a 14cc band and I was fortunate enough to have reached pretty good restriction after only my 2nd fill. I know lots of people that it took longer. So, everyone is certainly different. Take what positive you can from this site and leave the rest behind. You will learn the ropes soon enough! =) Good luck on your journey and hang on...it's going to be a long ride! =)

2.5 weeks out and no energy

Thank-you. I think I'm getting obsessive with the weight loss, I lost 10 lbs within the first week and have only lost a pound since. Frustrated cause I wanted to be one if those that lose their weight quickly.

    Weight loss rate with pcos

I have PCOS, but had the RNY. My weightloss has been excellent. At 3 months out, I have already lost 47% of my excess body weight. My endocrinologist was very pleased and my hormone levels, A1C are at goal. HW-292 • SW (6/29/17) 256.6 • CW 207.4

    Burning pain in upper left

They took out 2 ccs and brought me down to 7 in an 11 band and it still didn't help the pain, but helped me gain 10 pounds so far!

you seem to have done well in just a month - I found I didn't start losing weight until 6 months after banding - I needed many fills...
  17. Anyone have implants pre op and lost the weight? I'm just curious how many sizes you lost and what you ended up with. I was around 150 when I got mine and and curious to know what I might end up with when I get into the 120s. It seemed that when I lost before, they just seemed to get bigger! I'm about a 36 F now at 170, ooops, 169!

    10 pounds in two weeks

I think you are doing FINE babe, we all go at different paces and you just can't compare yourself to anyone or anything else - even your own expectations. Stay on the sunny side, focus on your achievements and on developing new awesome habits. Focus on the water, the protein, the exercise... and the weight loss will just keep on comin'!
  19. So personally I don't think you are asking too much at all. When my mom and I went on a liquid diet to lose weight, it was hard because we were trying to make this HUGE lifestyle change while the other half of our family carried on as though it wasn't a big deal. Which, looking back, hindered the progress we made. Because if your family is not supporting you by still going to fast food restaurants while you are there and not empathizing with you and your struggle, what's to stop you from easing into old habits. That's not to say tell them to stop altogether, at least not at this point, but asking them to be more considerate and maybe let you know if they are going to a fast food place so you can opt out. I've also been on the side where I wasn't dieting and my some in my family were. I made the accommodations because I loved them and wanted to support them on this journey to be the most successful they could be. If it meant not eating taco bell in front of them I gladly did it, because I stood by my support of them. I think you should have a talk with her and just explain how you need to be supported to have the best possible success because maybe she doesn't see her actions as unsupportive. Also if the whole family is trying to eat healthier why is is she going to a fast food joint anyway. I think you guys should probably sit down and have the talk again so as to clear the air and pave the way for a healthier life.

    TRULY NEED SERIOUS HELP

thank you for your kind words of support. i think the worst part is ME coming down on myself mentally. my husband says "just see the new doc. it's no big deal. start fresh, etc.". ME, on the other hand- i'm totally embarrassed to go and see a new doc because of the gain. However, i'm bringing myself to JUST GET OVER THAT and go see the man. i have to start somewhere. at least i didn't gain all my weight back, and i still DO have this wonderful sleeve that i can utilize to help with the work i have to now put in. again!

    Spinning classes

I just wanted to share my love for spinning classes and see if anyone else here is also a fan?! I was sleeved on November 19th 2012 and just recently got my fitness and exercise regimen going! I go to spinning classes about 3 times a week at the gym I joined and I LOVE THEM. I come out exhausted, drenched in sweat, and feeling SO ACCOMPLISHED! I love the music and the fun during the classes, we even have special days when a live DJ spins music during classes! I've lost about 70 pounds since I started my pre-op diet November 4th, 2012. Highest weight was 296 and current weight 226. Goal weight- 150, I'm hoping spinning helps me meet that goal!!!!

    1st weigh in

I hope your appt went well. My first post op visit was at 2 weeks, and the main focus was to ensure that the incisions were healing properly, and take the staples out. I was weighed (like every other time i had been to the drs office) I had lost about 15 lbs at that point. What i was really excited about was I had been taken off 2 of my BP medications and then a 3rd at 1 month. I focused on how good I felt, not the weight loss. The weight will come off, but everyone's body loses weight at a different speed. Good Luck on your journey

    1st weigh in

I am down an average of 8 pounds a week right now. Started Pre op diet at 288 and when I weighed in 6 days post op I was 263. Prior to doing surgery I had been training for over a year and was not losing anything so for me I am thrilled not really concerned what the doctor would like I am more about my clothes getting bigger and feeling healthier. The weight will take care of itself with the excercise
  24. I had a horrible big hiatal hernia and severe reflux. In fact I had developed Barrets esophagus which is precancerous. My doc was still confident if I got rid of hernia i would do well on sleeve. He was worried I would lose too much weight on RNY. I was skeptical but chose sleeve and after hernia repair i have had no reflux what so ever. None. I think i got lucky, I could not have handled more reflux it had destroyed my throat, my singing voice. So far so good. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I had sleeve surgery in Tijuana with Dr. Frayre from Ponce Bariatrics on December 5th. Like anyone, I was nervous about going over the border for this and my family was pretty freaked out about that, although they supported me in making this decision. I had the single port surgery through my belly button ($6,000), and for an additional $700, they took out my gal bladder as well through the same hole. My starting weight was 210 lbs, 34 BMI, and 5'6" tall. I had a friend who had gone through Dr. Ponce and had a great experience, so that is why I chose them. Dr. Frayre is another surgeon who works with Dr. Ponce and I was told that they always do surgeries together, even though I can't verify that, as I never saw or met Dr. Ponce. I won't lie, the first couple of days were rough, and it was my first major surgery, so I have nothing to compare to, but I do believe I received excellent care. I am a total sissy when it comes to pain and I really think I have a lower than normal tolerance for it. I was in a sort of tiny hospital called "INT clinic"...only about 12 or 14 rooms total and I had a room to myself with bathroom and walk in shower. The nurses were great and so responsive, even though they spoke little to no English. My single port incision is about an inch long, and located not so much IN my belly button, but at the top of it which was different from what I thought. I have a very deep and narrow belly button, and they have to get all their instruments through that hole, so maybe that is why. I also had a very small drain incision. From my experience, I wouldn't say my recovery was faster with this surgery, but if you want less scars, this may be what you want to choose. You could save $1,000 and just go with the regular surgery and have 4 or 5 tiny incisions. But I am healing well after 10 days and no issues. I do believe Dr. Frayre and Dr. Ponce are accomplished surgeons. I was told Dr. Frayre had the sleeve surgery himself. This is long, but I hope this info is helpful.
