questions about band to bypass revision
bandedat19 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I've been suffering from complications with my band for years. I finally got the nerve to go back and see my doc (after long term vomiting, reflux, pain, weight gain), and she and my surgeon suggested a revision to bypass. Has anyone done this? What have your results been like? How does eating differ? Worried that I may fail with bypass the same way as I did with the band. I have so many questions, and while the forums I've seen have been very helpful I'm seeking more specifics! Thank you : ) -

All of my stitches are the self dissolve kind. I've actually popped 2. One was about 3-4 weeks postop. I raised my arms up to get something and didn't realize how far I stretched. The second was the weekend I was on my feet too long. I swelled but also slept in my bed instead of the recliner. I tried to get up by myself and too fast. Just fluke things. So I still sleep in my recliner most nights. It's something about laying flat I can't do yet. ???? So my belly button is superficially open inside. I've been doing wet to dry dressing and new skin is growing in. She is going to revise my scar later. Not that it bothers me lol.

My experience was a bit different since I am a revision patient. I went to a seminar years ago went they were all one group. It was very informative. All my nutrition appts have been web based besides the initial 2 hour appt with behavior specialist and nutritionist. My insurance was approved 1st round. She is very detailed but I bugged her lol. They tell you all the prices upfront which I like. They do make you by preop diet from them and post op vitamin pack. The office is very nice and the ladies that work in the office super nice. They do have support groups held at Sentara Potomac. I know people that have had surgery with Dr. M (cousin) and Dr Halmi (BFF) I hear great things about both. I am not sure why the practice split. I am having surgery on the 21st of October. -

Good luck everyone with your upcoming surgeries! May God bless you with fast recoveries and smooth sailing. My revision from lap band to sleeve is Nov. 5 and can't wait yo get this lap band out. The lap band was a nightmare. I can't wait to get the sleeve! -
Did anyone feel pressure by surgeon to so bypass instead of sleeve
AngieNP replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had lap band (would never reccomend), and now have the sleeve. 5 years post op, wishing I had malabsorption. I have regained 25-30 pounds. Don't think you will never be hungry from the sleeve. I am always hungry! Even when I drop my carbs very low, I will lose about 4 pounds and then nothing for weeks. Very frustrating!! Looking into revision, yet again. I think the sleeve is 100 times better than the band, but it's not easy after the first year. -
Looking for info on Duodenal Switch Surgery In Mexico
AngieNP replied to Midwest Cowgirl's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I'm having DS in Mexico on October 5 with Dr. Jose Rodriguez. This will actually be revision #3 for me. Lap band in 2006 (vomited all the time), sleeve in 2009, (lost a decent amt of weight but have regained about 25 pounds and have terrible reflux, no restriction anymore). I'm considered to be a lightweight and feel like I might be slightly insane for wanting DS, but we are going to go with a longer common channel since I don't have that much to lose. I've done a lot of research and DS has the best long term success rate. I also live in the Midwest. I used Dr Rodriguez for my lap band and had zero complaints. -
I have just recently found out I've been approved for a band to sleeve revision. I have used myfitnesspal off and on before so I might add you all to give me an idea of what to eat!

Band to Bypass success stories with low BMI?
kiwi201000 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I will be having a revision at 32 BMI next month and am worried I will have a slow weight loss... I am 236 at 5'10". Id like to hear about your weight loss after revision... -
I stand by my previous comment. I think it pays to be sure. I spent about a year in anguish over the decision to revise to the sleeve. I was in emotional pain but I think i worked through some food issues during that time. I mean I actually faced the question if food or life & good health was more important to me. I picked a healthy life and needed the sleeve to help me achieve it.

advise please...Sleeve to RNY revision...
sbtanewme posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello all, I am 9 months out from having the sleeve and down 55 lbs and have been the same weight for 6 mths or so. I'm seriously considering having the bypass surgery since my weight loss has been a minimal even though I am doing the best I can. My stats are started at 293lbs. current weight is 237lbs. goal weight 150lbs I would love to know if anyone has had and then had the RNY afterwards and if you were successful with losing the rest of the weight. I know youre all wondering if I've done all that I was supposed to do to be successful with the sleeve and for the most part I have. Thanks in advance for any feedback -
I am a revision from Lapband and I am a slow loser too. I have averaged 1.5 lbs a week, but it has stayed pretty consistent. I am not disappointed at all! I feel great, and since it has been slow but STEADY I know the weight will continue to come off. I think of it like the Turtle and the Hare.... I might not get to goal as fast as some, but I will still get there.

Gastric sleeve with Dr. Fernando Garcia
Mashengka posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hello my name is Maria, and I am pretty new to this website. I just wanted to give a review of Dr. Fernando Garcia with tijuanabariatrics.com. If you ever decide to go with him please do your research. I am not going to say anything on his skills if you are a first time patient. But for revision surgery please consider someone else more experienced. I went to see dr. Garcia for a revision from lap band to sleeve. I payed good amount of money to be promised a sleeve and ended up with God knows what. As soon as I could drink I drank the whole bottle of water and other drinks no problem. They said it was a perfect sleeve and that they used small bougie. I got home I was hungry all the time and drinking all the liquids I could! No restriction whatever. I started to panic and called and emailed Doctor Velazco his helping Doctor. She said don't worry you won't be feeling full on liquids. When you start your purée and solid diet you will feel it. So 2 month out of what was called sleeve surgery I am 35 pounds heavier than before. Of course I started to panic and do my research why I didn't succeed in this. I found dr. Rodriguez through Belight company. And after reviewing my medical history he agreed on doing a bypass on me. When I met him I asked him why do you think I gained so much weight. If I had sleeve I should had stayed at same weight and not gaining no more. He said he won't be able to tell till he is inside of me. What he told me was horrible. Dr Garcia didn't do no sleeve on me. He just folded my stomach in half and saw it and than stitching got undone so half of my stomach was stitched and other was half wasn't. It wasn't even a plication. With plication stomach folded in several folds but what he did to me is not even a surgery. He just put my life in jeopardy because a lot of scar tissue left in there. He didn't clean anything up. Instead of 1 and 1/2 hours my sergeant was working on me for 4 hours!!! I am so hopeful that this was it and I don't have to go through another surgery again! -
Banded in 2001. Questions about converting to Sleeve. Scared.
DaniEcho replied to VDLT's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got my band in 2007 at my highest weight of 249 (self-pay was $17K in Ft. Lauderdale). I got down to 205 the first month, then developed a terrible cough. They totally unfilled the band and put me on Nexium, and I gradually gained back to 245. I never lost the cough, and I recently went in for an EGD and was told I have polyps in my stomach from the Nexium. My insurance has approved a revision and my surgery is scheduled for October 19th. I'm pretty nervous, and this board has really helped me. I am really scared that this won't work either. I have researched as much as I can, joined a gym, and I'm trying to stay positive, but even my family is asking why I think this will work when the band didn't. Best of luck to you all, and thank you all for your posts. -
How common is needing a revision after the bypass?

Where are you From ?
disappearingdebbie replied to jemma's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ladybugg73.... I am having a bypass revision next week. I had my original surgery in 1983. I am going to Mexico to have it done by Dr. Rodriguez, who has done this particular laparoscopic revision surgery many times and is a leader in revisions. My insurance would not cover it, so I have to pay out of pocket. The total cost for the surgery, hospital stay (for 2) ,the transportation to and from the hospital and med's on check-out is $8950. I scheduled my surgery through Beliteweight.com with Sylvia. I'll be updating here next week after my procedure. -
I am from southeastern Massachusetts! Had gastric bypass in 2008 and I have gained back about 80 pounds back... Wanted to know if anyone has or knows if they do revision on a bypass?

LapBand is a nightmare for me. Want to go to sleeve. Medicare anyone?
CowgirlJane replied to TheyCallMeHJ's topic in Insurance & Financing
I don'[t know about medicare, but that was my life with the lapband as well. Even after 10 years, and some pouch dialation and no fill in the band, I would still vomit if I had even a spoonful of rice. It was terrible. For some reason, the band just doesn't work right for some of us. Good luck in your search to revise.... I revised to sleeve in 2011 and very pleased with my choice even though I still work pretty hard at this. -

Lap Band Slipped, Gastric Sleeve failed, what's next?
Jyoyonomore replied to Soli3l's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good luck Soli31! Remember your journey is "yours" we can all just share or not share our experiences but no one can tell you the right decision for you. When I had my sleeve last year my Surgeon did a very small sleeve but she has reminded me ( even though I have lost 81 LBS in my first year and likely will lose a few more)on every one of my followup appointments that I can stretch my sleeve/pouch if I don't watch my portion size. So I keep in mind that all these procedures are tools to help kick start our weight loss and reduce or eliminate our illnesses but WE must make the decision. Every day to follow thru on nutritionand exercise. All the best! quote name="Soli3l" post="3931941" timestamp="1440722473"]Endoscopy confirmed the doctor's suspicion...I have a big sleeve, it's also dilated w/ a bulge, he said it's not my fault, but it could be revised...now the waiting begins. -
VBG/gastroplasty to RNY? Any experience out there?
salubrino replied to salubrino's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks Cheri_J for your story! I´ve only had to do one upper endoscopy but that´s plenty enough.... And no fighting the insurance either. I live in Europe so here you don´t fight the insurance companies...you fight the public surgery queues instead... I guess it all adds up in the end?! Did your surgery take much longer than normal RNYs? My surgeon has done quite many revisions and says they normally take about twice the time. And did you have any issues with the old band? My worry is that the band will not come out easily and that they will have to postpone the RNY part....would be just my luck. Glad to hear that you have had a good weight loss despite being a revission, thats another fear of mine that it will be less effective the second time around. I´ve gotten to a good start when it comes to pre-op diet and exercise. A bit tired of the monotone liquid diet but less than two weeks to go.. I´m confident that it´ll be worth it.
