  1. Hey, I was wondering if anybody would like to tell how the sleeve changed their life with PCOS. I am having my surgery somewhere between October and November and am struggling with trying to get a grip on what will happen after surgery. Is it easier or harder after surgery to lose weight with PCOS? I appreciate everything and thank you ahead of time!

    exercise, economy, and ugh

I can totally empathize. My membership is $64/month, and with this economy, I feel it's too much of a luxury (although can you really put a price on health?). I know a few people who absolutely swear by Turbo Jam. I have been looking into it for a while, and I'm finally going to buy it. The reviews are phenomenal if you don't have knee problems. It's a combination of dancing and kick boxing; really high-energy and upbeat, hip-hop music. It goes for about $80 for all the DVDs and weight gloves, but you can find it a bit cheaper on E-Bay. Slightly expensive, but over the long run, much cheaper than the gym! I can't wait for my exercise ban to be lifted...3 weeks to go!

    8 Weeks Post Op

Did you get a diet to follow from your surgeon or the NUT?????????? I know that each surgeon has different ideas on what their patients should be eating at each stage and mine goes out for a year. I am following it very closely. I figure if I start cheating and eating things that are farther out then I won't have anything to look forward to when I reach that stage. Also some of the food that they make you wait for are not good for your sleeve until that point. Congratulations on your weight loss success. If you are having trouble getting your protein in with regular foods you can always add a protein shake. I still have a protein shake every morning with my benefiber for breakfast. I am a little over 3 months out and have no trouble getting all of my protein.
  4. You asked what we thought.....here it is: Don't do it. Don't gain. It's very doubtful that such a plan would even work out like you'd want it to. You'd be making yourself miserable in the process. I read testimonies like the one recently posted by @@LowBMISleever explaining her experience with Dr Ortiz and I bang my head in the wall. I kick myself, too. The reason is that I wish I'd taken those steps so long ago. Well done. That would be my recommendation. Keep losing....save up some money and schedule when you are ready.
  5. DH has clocked in with figures like 100/75 and such since losing 25kg with his band. But he tried coming off his meds and his BP went way back up again, although it was only ever 145/85 or so, not incredibly high. I think exercise as opposed to simple weight loss is one of the key factors as to whether it will stay down so you can come off your meds.

    Skipping Puree Stage

Any changes to your diet phase you should definitely get guidance from your doctor/weight loss team. The phases are there to help your new stomach adjust slowly and to minimize the risk of potential complications. Having difficulties in any diet phase can be stressful to deal with. You're only a couple of weeks out from surgery. I felt lethargic and weak 2 weeks out from my surgery too and that was without having issues with liquids. Your body is still healing and it takes time. Please make sure you speak to your doctor before making any changes to your diet phase!

    Skipping Puree Stage

There are all sorts of protein drinks that can help you continue following plan. Every time someone says protein drinks are hard the good folks here pull out options I never would have contemplated. Let them work their magic on you. [ETA: I misread 'skip the puree' as 'skip to the puree' stage. You have even more varieties on the puree stage. You can puree any protein you like (along with the seasonings/sauces) and you can make it as thin or thick as you like. Folks here are brilliant at all of this, let them help] As Pandemonium says: Do not go off plan. Talk to your Doc and if the plan needs changing, it's something you do together. Then stick with what you decide. Losing weight without surgery was hard. So hard we all failed at doing it. WLS is also hard. It's just hard differently. Both do share one feature, it can be easier to quit. Don't quit. Here you've encountered an issue but you're not asking us how to solve your protein problem. You're asking how to abandon your plan. Give it a chance. The folks here will give you protein ideas that are amazing. You have the best minds on your side to help you solve your problem. Give them a chance. Our biggest challenge in this whole exercise is to get our thinking right. Good luck, Tek

    Getting Ready

Good morning guys, Just wanted to let you know I'm scheduled to go in this morning for the Lap surgery. My date was originally scheduled for April 3, but my doctor had to re-schedule so I am going in today at 9 am. I am worried and excited however, I am determined to make this healthy lifestyle change. My family and friends are just as excited as I am about this new transition. I started at 273lbs. and I weighed in last week at 268. No serious pre-op just eating light for a week and a half. My goal weight is 165-170. I am 5ft. 8.5 inches tall. Stay focused! Band-tastic
  9. I love to make New Year's Resolutions and commit to change at the turn of a new year. My commitments for change for 2010 include: 1. Focus on Spiritual Growth 2. Focus on Family 3. Focus on Health - Exercise 5 times per week - Appreciate who I am and how I look like every day (in the past, no matter how much weight I lost, I wasn't satisfied) 4. Focus on finishing dissertation - Propose by February - Defend by May - Graduate by Summer

  11. My insurance(BCBS of TN) requires me to have documentation of height and weight for the last 5 years. I have all of them except for one year (2013). My surgeon's office told me to go back an additional year(2010) but still can't obtain documentation for that year either. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what was the outcome? I hope I am not denied the surgery because of this. Thanks!

My advice? Make an appointment with your NUT today and go back to basics. Are you following your program? Are you tracking your food? Are you getting in all of your Protein and fluids every day? Are you taking all of your Vitamins and supplements as recommended? Are you exercising? Whether you are entering a maintenance phase or still want to lose more weight, talk to your NUT about healthy strategies for reaching your goal. And, Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
  13. I'm almost 2 weeks post op and breezed right through it. Pain for me was tolerable and pretty much gone 4-5 days post surgery. Sooner or later you'll eat something and feel a pain in your new pouch, take it as a signal to stop or slow way down. You have to learn to listen to your body. You'll be a lot less hungry and watch the weight come off fast at first. Enjoy the ride and look at it as a fresh start to better health! Congrats and don't worry too much!
  14. Thanks Kathy for replying it makes me feel better knowing he was able to have surgery in spite of his apnea However I am sorry for him that the weight came back on and he meeded sugery. I have been feeling better until My eyes started swelling yesturday I have food allergies and the food color is a nono for me I was also put on liquid amixil (bright Pink) 5 days ago for a uti so I am hopin its not the antibiotic Juust Gods way of keeping me on my toes lol Thanks again and I hopw all is well with you husband Diane
  15. I wouldn't worry that much about the cpap machine... My husband has one, and it took him a long time to get used to the mask... some nights he only lasted an hour with it... Lately he's been sick, so isn't using it at all... And he's probably a 12 on a scale of 1-10 (very severe)! Sometimes it's all too much to deal with at one time. Relax, try to settle yourself down before worrying about the apparatus... you've lived this long without it... several more nights won't make a difference... and if all goes well - YOU WON'T NEED IT AT ALL once you start losing weight.... (that happened to my DH, then he gained it all back). Hope this calms you down a bit... HUGS!!!
  16. Hi Diane... Yes, my husband had a repeat sleep study... he requested it because of the weight loss... he was not snoring anymore and sleeping well without it. He gained all his weight back plus some (sound familiar) - and has had a number of surgeries...hosp. staff noticed low oxygen levels in recovery, alerting his pcp to repeat the study... and now he's back on the macine PLUS oxygen at night. Are you starting to feel better? katie

    15 Days Post-Op Plateaued Weight

I was banded Jan 3oth and am having a similar experience to other posters - my scale has been showing the same weight for almost two weeks now. I do understand that the weight loss is gradual, but I am sticking to the eating plan (900-1100 cal/day) and ex ercising (one half hour of elliptical or walking) and I'm frustrated that the scale has not budged despite being hungry every two hours. I have been logging everything on myfitnessplan and will print it out and bring it to my nutritionist to get her opinion and recommendations. Also, my doctor seems to be very conservative and my first fill is not until May 1st. I don't know if I can continue "being good" until three months post op with all the hunger I am experiencing. On a positive note, I am already off two blood pressure meds!
  18. Hard to say! I have a Protein shake and a Protein Bar each day. Then I typically have a Lean Cuisine or Atkins frozen dinner emphasizing veggies and protein for dinner, 8-9oz. A greek yogurt now and then. I also eat some fruit, and some whole grains/fiber, like: slice of protein enriched bread w/peanut butter, or an over-easy egg, or a little chicken salad bowl of Cheerios or All-Bran or Post Shredded Wheat & Bran with organic fat-free milk Fiber enriched low sugar oatmeal with wild blueberries I am basically just trying to eat healthy and light, probably average 1000 calories or so. That's not very much, so I am losing weight about the same rate I did before surgery.
  19. 6 years post-op and have gained everything back. Poor choices coupled with a band that is almost full that essentially has no restriction. Really looking to get back on track! Of course I have just moved and changed insurances that do not cover bariatric procedures so any fills will be on me. Looking for advice, your yo-yo success story or inspiration .......thanks
  20. I agree. Hard to understand how people are able to "eat around" the band. I'm thinking if your properly adjusted, too much food would just 1)make You very uncomfortable 2) make me vomit 3)make me feel like I wasn't being serious if it happened more than a few times I truly don't understand but would be open to listening to how regains of all weight loss happen. It could happen to any of us not working our band right I suppose. I see it on this board a lot????

Hey, what gives? I was banded on April 27th and am still the same weight today! Is this common??
  22. Unless you changed your eating habits considerably, chances are, the gain isn't "real." That is, you did not gain a pound of body fat. Human body weight fluctuates. Many things influence it--hormones, stress (this, too, is hormonal), hydration status, how much bulk there is in the intestine at weigh-in time....and on and on and on. The scale helps us gauge the changes in our bodies, but really, it just gives a snapshot of one particular moment in time---and that picture can be distorted by factors that are not related to what is really going on, in terms of fat loss. Take a deep breath, keep doing what you're doing, and the scale will cooperate--sometimes! (Other times, it will be putzy, and you'll see stupid, senseless gains. You'll learn to put them in perspective and keep on keeping on.)
  23. Ok, so I know a pound is not that big of a deal and I should be happy that I have already lost 25 lbs. I am on regular foods now and when I stepped on the scale this morning I had gained a pound over last week. Feeling pretty bummed about it.... Anyone have any suggestions as to what could be going on? Any thoughts on how to modify so that this won't happen again? Thanks for any help. This process so far has been relatively easy for me and I want to make sure that I keep a good attitude about it.
  24. I had surgery on February 6th. I am 15 days post op, when I started pre op diet I was 205 lbs, day of surgery I was 200 and today I am 192. Any weight I have lost has been from liquid diet and has now plateaued. I started exercising 5 days ago and have been going back and forth between 190-193 lbs. I want to be able to lose at least another 5 lbs before my first fill but don't seem to be getting there. I am sticking to post op diet and can't seem to figure this out. I am working out daily about 45 mins, treadmill only because thats the only thing my doctor has allowed me thus far. Any suggestions or advice? I actually have a trip to miami planed for March right before my fill (which is on the 16th), want to be able to get into the upper 180s range by then.

    15 Days Post-Op Plateaued Weight

I was banded on 12/21. I lost 11 pounds the first week on liqueds and another 14 since. However, I can go a whole week without seeing the scale move and than it will move a pound or two. I stopped getting on the scale every day because it was depressing me. I had one fill 2cc and have no restriction. I don't eat any bread, no drinks accept tea and water, and very litte carbs. I know there are going to be times when I don't lose weight and times when I do well, it is a journey. Don't fret and keep on eating right and exercising (although I have been very lax with excercising) and it will all work out. Good luck!
