I am 3 months post op and I have lost 53 Lbs. last week I had emergency gallbladder surgery! Since the removal of my gallbladder, I cannot tolerate any food. Without too much Information, it doesn't stay in my system long at all. Carbohydrates are the safest thing at the moment. High protein/high fats are very destructive to my system at the moment. Any advice/suggestions to make it through this period? I'm hoping my body will adjust- but I struggling to make my protein goal at the moment!

5 weeks out and still have very swollen stomach
DrmBig4Evr replied to Gwen52's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I am at 2 weeks, have a large bulge, I posted this question this morning. Essentially what I've learned is that its from the healing process and also may be scar tissue. There was a poster who said that they called their doctor about it because they thought it was a hernia and that was their answer. -
I got my sleeve on the 5th, and after surgery, my back was KILLING me for the first two weeks straight! I slept with my heating pad behind my back it hurt so bad the first week! The heat (& Lortab) helped tremendously, but it still hurt a bit... My chiro told me that I had to wait 6 weeks for a full adjustment (same as a c-section, or any other abdominal surgery), but she did adjust my neck and shoulders since I came in for an appointment (for free ). The biggest help was my friend (who is a massage therapist) who gave me a back chair massage a couple nights in a row to ease the pain.... Good luck! It will go away......... eventually......

I was sleeved on January 14th. Weighed myself for the first time last Monday and was down 25 lbs. I don't regret my decision but can't say it's been easy. I have my moments or sometimes days when my stomach and my brain are out of sync and in constant battle over food and eating. Then there are days when I can't even believe I had the surgery. The first few weeks my stomach made all sorts of noises that are starting to quiet down a bit now that I'm eating more regular foods. I've felt down and I've felt amazingly good. I just keep trying to remind myself this is and was always about my health. During the harder moments I read postings here or go for a walk.

5 weeks out and still have very swollen stomach
Gwen52 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hello! I am 5 weeks out from surgery and doing really well. My only issue is that my stomach area is still very swollen. The swelling is above my belly button and seems strange because I can tell my stomach is losing weight below my belly button. At 2 weeks my surgeon said it was fluids that would reabsorb but if that is what it is, it is still there! I don't have pain but I'm wondering what it is and when it will go away! Anyone have a similar experience or any advice? -
So I was banded 8 years ago. No real complications...got to a the median estimated weight loss over time. Began to creep up a pound here and there and figured would "upgrade" to the sleeve. Main reasons were that I know that at some point the band will fail etc as it is a mechanical device...and secondly to get ahead on the weight regain curve. Saved up on self pay, got my unfill about a month ago now in preparation for a Feb 19th surgery which is scheduled. Now here is the problem...and question.. prior to banding I had severe gerd...to the point where I was afraid to go to bed at night. Woke up with acid in my sinuses 3 times a week, choking on stomach acid whole nine yards. I thought it was because I was fat and was one of the driving reasons for my weight loss surgery. In my banding surgery they found a hernia and repaired it. Cool that must be my reason right? Fat and hernia... Never had Gerd or heartburn post banding...well, after my unfill that is. Just about after every meal I have heartburn to some degree. Havent had a night time gerd episode "yet" but after reading all the GERD stories on sleeves I am hyper nervous. To the point of looking at all options to include blowing the surgery off...Does anyone have any experience, stories from yourself or even other friends?? Any suggestions at all? I haven't talked to my doctor yet as I want to kind of have my mind in a strong direction before doing so. I am thinking about bypass, but it seems the most extreme. My BMI is 34.5 currently...Also what if I try to go back into lapband fills after the break? Maybe it will be like a new banding? Any thoughts or comments are appreciated!

My dr said at least4 weeks OR when all incisions are healed.

Yup, agree with you. Bariatric Advantage or Celebrate are two good companies to start out with for supplementation needs (Vitamins and minerals). I have no problem with that, but would suggest nectar or unjury as great Protein shakes for a newly sleeved individual. They are both solid brands and work well. In fact, my WLS center also recommends Bariactric Advantage for supplementation and Syntrax Nectar for protein shakes. That being said, I am 1 year post op so am a mature post op and somewhat new vet. I have been around the block a few times in my journey so far and have learned much and have much to share around shakes and supplementation and their impact on weight loss and fitness. I hope you do not read my post as anti-doctor or anti dietician. Quite the opposite in fact. In the first six months, it is critical to follow doctor orders to a "T" both dr and dietician know how to make their patients successful. Of course you are aware every doctor and dietician can potentially give different plans to their patients that may not be consistent with other patient doctor and dietician plans. After 6 months ( or when you feel is a good time), you can start to form your own strategies in terms of diet and fitness. The level of tweaking that you do is highly individual. The shake mentioned in this thread from GNC is just another tweak to the lifetime eating plan. Re-feed may not be an ideal shake for me, but I wanted to give it a try for reasons mentioned above in this thread. I also take cake batter muscle milk light and GNC Wheybolic or Isopure vanilla bean for recovery shake. I am so much a shake person at 3 a day. I eat small protein based meals for the other 4 meals. By small, I mean 3 oz lean protein and perhaps a veggie.

I am 5'4" (stretching) and currently weigh 168.4. Haven't done a waist measurement. I actually AM small boned...you just can't tell it as I have covered them up with so much padding! My goal is theoretically 130 and that might be a stretch. I will probably be esctastic to get to 140 and anything that I lose under that will be a bonus. I bought a pair of size 12 jeans a couple of weeks ago that I could button and zip only by sucking it in and they looked painted on because they were so tight! Today I am wearing them to work on casual Friday and they fit wonderfully! It may be that the brand runs large though because the same weekend I bought dress slacks and a straight skirt in a size 14. I don't care if it is vanity sizing or not...I'll take it!

a maintenance victory - do I have a chance at doing this for the long haul?
CowgirlJane posted a topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I have been maintaining since Feb, but recently had a small regain that kinda messed with my head. My goal is 158 and try to stay under that, but really due to the daily scale bounce I kinda consider 155-160 my goal range. Then, when I saw 163 on the scale I about had a heart attack. Combine it with the fact that I am not working out in the gym, but doing summer activities instead, I am not quite as "dense" and my fitted jeans feel.. snug. That all made me feel icky and unattractive even though i knew that it was small and really only noticable to me. So, i went on a business trip last week and saw someone I haven't seen since August. He didn't recognize me and definately gave me the "once over" with the eyes and the "wow you look great". It was like the boost i needed since I often eat too much and wrong things on business trips. It was a reminder that I haven't gained 100#... I have gained just a few pounds and i can fix this. So, this morning I weighed in at 159. Thank goodness! Anyway, this maintenance stuff is hard because i keep having the feeling like it could just all slip through my fingers. I am seeing a counselor and her advice on the tiny regain was to just "be okay with it" for awhile. I followed her advice as best i could which did avoid the whole stress/guilt eating cycle. I can't be relying on people to keep giving me the "wow " speech to keep my motivation up I know that - but it was a boost that I sure needed this week. -
I am a QSR restaurant manager and am wondering when I can expect to go back to work... no surgery date set yet, just completed my sleep study. I am hoping for the week after Turkey Day. I work 10 hour shifts and am on my feet the whole time. Anyone out there who also manages a QSR restaurant...? What should I expect when I return to work..?? I was originally told 2 weeks...now I am hearing 3-4 weeks... I do not have STDL and really can not afford to take so much time off... But I do not want that to be a reason for me to regret my choice to have surgery.

this is why we stay on top of it, losing a few pounds is much easier than six - ten. I had a re-gain of just two pounds, I had my sister here for a week, we had a BD celebration and this past Monday when I weighed (I weigh every morning) I was up two. I purposely cut back calories by 100, but some days it was 200 or a little more.....and as of this morning, I'm back to 145.5, within my comfort zone, which is 144 - 146. Less than a week, but it's because I look at my "dashboard" every single day, without fail. You're doing great, keep up the great work!!! -
Swallowing pains n stomach pains
Fariethin replied to JROD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets better. Your stomach is healing from being cut open. I am 3 weeks out. It hurts now if I take to big of a gulp of liquid or eat a little to much, but it is a different kind of pain. Hang in there it gets much better! -

Don't push yourself too hard, it's only been a little over a week. Make sure to walk. I'm sure you are getting sick of people saying that, but it really does help. As far as the pain medication, just make sure to come off it when you can. I know the stuff I was taking made me sleepy and zapped my energy-not to mention they are very addictive. Don't get me wrong, it was helpful for the pain, but you might want to try tylenol, to see if it helps. As soon as I went off the pain meds, my energy level went way up. As far as your co-workers, I agree with the idea to try to appoach them and take the first step to bond with them. If it doesn't work then it's on them. That added stress isn't going to help you with this process. Find a job that makes you smile, or at least not dread it. I know when I have a tough day at work, my old habit was to eat. Set yourself up to succeed. They should be greatful to have you:) I can only speak for myself, but getting up and moving helped with the recovery. I can suggest anything I want, but all in all it is your body and you know it best, just listen to what it is telling you. Keep in mind, you are only a little over a week out of surgery. Surgery is surgery, you need time to recover. Take the time you need and take care of you:) Good luck and I'll keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery. Moe

I feel your pain and disappointment too. I lost more weight in the 3 months before surgery than I have in the 4 months since. I too often find myself drinking with meals to wash it down so I can eat. I hate the "new" full feeling. I know I'm not always eating the right foods, although I am eating considerably less of it. We do have pizza a couple of times a month and I tend to eat the cheese and toppings off of a couple of slices. I don't dare do breads, Pasta, rice, or eggs anymore. I've got a crazy work schedule and am at work before 5am so I do eat in the car more often than I'd like. I live almost an hour from work so If I don't remember to bring lunch with me I always end up grabbing something at the drive thru. Wendy's Chili is not easy to eat while driving. I'm a picky eater and this band has made that worse. Chewing food until it's chewed enough makes me gag, that mushy slimy food doesn't want to go down. I need to suck it up and be super strict for 3 weeks. If I can stick to it for 3 weeks I can do it longer... 3 weeks seems to be how long it takes me to get the cravings out of my systm. I've got to stop making excuses and accept that this is not what I expected, and adjust. Most of the time I don't like the band. I wish I had had the sleeve done instead. And I get so mad at myself that I had surgery and I'm still screwing my weight up. I was a better bandster before I was banded! I think I need to meet some other banded people in my area. I would like to eat a few meals with others who are successufl in it so I can see exactly how they eat. You're not alone. Lack of motivation is here too.

3 Weeks Post-Op... Feeling Sluggish !
Teresa Johnson posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks Post-Op, and am excited to eat some soft foods.. but am feeling sluggish, and tired... Do I need more portein? I getting about 50-60 g a day.. but, maybe not as early as I need it. It seems like about 10 am I cannot stay awake. I have not had any Protein yet, I usually get some about this time... Or could my blood sugar be too low? -
I feel your pain, although I was only banded on 12/30/10. I am having difficulty with my motivation to follow the stupid post surgery diet and fell off the wagon in a big way this last weekend. I am back on the straight and narroy with the liquid diet today. Still no motivation. And exercise is a huge issue for me. I used to exercise all the time, but as I have gotten older (and fatter) that gusto is gone. All I can suggest is that you start with your diet and go through the beginning diet again, working your way up to solid foods. Maybe with that and an adjustment to make your stoma tighter, you will find things move again. i just have to not be in the same room as my husband when he eats. He is on the Atkins diet, but he cheats regularly... in front of me. Also, have a friend who you trust come over and clean out your pantry and freezer. Give them a list for the grocery and some money and stick to it. I was an accountant before I retired. Our budget has gotten much better since I started this process. We no longer eat at restaurants except once in a great while. And we only pay cash for such splurges. Our grocery bill has shrunk significantly as well. And while our pharmacy bill has not yet budged, it will before much longer as I am the one taking 90% of the pills. Just attack it as though it were your financial budget and you just lost your job. Cut out everything that is not needed or good for you. Bring only in those items that add value. Take that trusted friend with you for walks or, given your recent weather, work together to shovel snow. Working out with someone with you makes things easier and you can be each other's support. I purchased a membership at 24-hour Fitness. It is pretty cool as they have multiple treadmills, recumbant bicycles, machines, etc. They also have indoor pools, a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. All in all, not a bad deal for $199 per person per year. It is WAY cheaper than the YMCA membership. And they have specials for 3, 6, or 12 1-hour long sessions with a trainer. We are all in this together. (and I know all too well that cheesecake is wayyy to close to the "soft" food description). I won't harp on your smoking. You will make that change when you are ready. What about support groups? There is Overeater's Annonymous, Weight Watchers, or some other support group. Even AA works. An addict is an addict. And we are addicts. Our drug is food.

I've been out of town the last few weeks; going to different time zones and getting up and going to bed at different hours than at home. I've also started getting to the gym at 5:00 am. 3 or 4 times a week I've been pretty tired, but have been trying to get to bed earlier and generally get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep. Lately I feel like I've been sabotaging myself. I've been really hungry, even on days when I haven't gone to work out. I am getting really discouraged that I've been eating 2 Snacks a day, sometimes 3 (!!) because I'm so hungry. I feel like I'm a total failure and have just wasted $12,000. I called the Dr. today and am going in for a fill on Wednesday, but she also said that one of the reasons I might be so hungry is because I'm tired. She suggested skipping the workouts for a couple of days so I can sleep in later. She believes that getting more sleep, and also the fill, will really help. Because my kids and husband just went back to school, it is really difficult for me to find any time to exercise after work. Has anyone else noticed a change in their hunger when they are tired? Has it helped to get more sleep? thanks
