October 2016 Surgeries, 5-6 Months Out, How Many Calories...
Queen_Bee replied to Shana Lee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
10-24 sleeved. Average about 950-1000 calories a day. Carbs under 40 (unless it's a special occasion or can't be helped), protein 80g minimum. Don't count fat. According to My Fitness Pal, my sodium and fat is usually way under. Doing really well on this as long as I keep the carbs down. I'm down to about 35% body fat, working towards my 25% goal. -
That is how it is done, it is really great and economical. Greetings from across the pond. Have several friends in the UK and my BFF lived there for 10 years.

Hey all, I just got my band on 5/12/08. Was feeling ok in the hospital but ever since I was discharged yesterday I feel a pain in the center of my chest. This is the exact same sensation I'd feel if i just didn't eat for a while (pre surgery of course) so I'm not sure if it's hunger pain or this gas everyone mentions. Is there a way to help get rid of the gas? Has anyone else experienced this and if so did you think it was hunger or the gas? I can deal with the other pains but this one is driving me nuts. I feel as though I need to drink more than the 1oz every 10 minutes. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments would be most appreciated.

gas or hunger pains
barbara9460 replied to goodbyefood's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I was banded on 5/9 and I have similar weird sensations in the middle of my chest. For me it happened a lot in the first couple of days, but now only when I've had too much to drink. I'm on Clear liquids for the first 10 days, then full liquids for 3 weeks. I have this pain more and it's sharper if I'm eating cold sugar-free popcicles or drinking cold Water. Gas-X is a must for me, though much of the gas pain is not intestinal, but abdominal. That means that the body must absorb it slowly, not just "letting it rip." I wish it was that easy. Although, I must warn you... :w00t: if you're diabetic and have not had fruit juices in some time, they will give you the runs. So be careful if you do "let it rip" because accidents happen and can be horriffic! Hang in there and do the walking. I don't particularly find that it helps me either, but it does help to keep us limber and prepare us for when we're allowed to exercise. Best of Luck! Barbara -

How does a gastric band REALLY work?
2muchfun replied to Sally Johnston's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Great article but we don't have 20 cent pieces here in the states and a 5 cent piece is a nickel here and is bigger than I would think the hole would be? Can you think of something more universal? Marbles? Pencil diameter? 10 millimeters ID? -
Cloths, Style, Hair, Foundations....

There are extensive measurement charts to check with. One of the things I got said it was a 10= Large... I usually wear an 11-12... and it fit just fine. Check the charts to make sure... -
Okay - here's my two cents on this. Early on I experieced exactly what most of your are describing - a rumble, an uncertainty for the next bite. I took that as my full sign. As my tummy healed, full is now very similar to what it was pre-op but I achieve it much faster and it is very finite. It's kind of like once I get "full", a lid closes on my stomach and nothing else is going in, no "last bite", nothing, zip, period. It's not unpleasant, I just get a strong signal from my stomach that my stomach is "now closed for the meal". If I push it, I usually will have stomach pain for 10-20 minutes. So I've learned that the additional bite of food better be darn good or else I'm not suffering. LOL:)

Weight Loss Stall - Feeling Defeated
biginjapan replied to msteinman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are still recovering from surgery so your weight will likely fluctuate for a few weeks (although overall should be going down). I think as we start using up the glucose in our fat cells it can cause some fluid retention which causes our weight to go up temporarily. Don't weigh yourself everyday - it's the fastest way to de-motivate yourself if you don't see any movement, or only upwards movement. I "gained" five pounds after surgery but have been slowly losing since then. It's best to pick one day a week for an "official" weigh in (for me it's Monday morning) - don't worry what's happening the other days (easier said than done!). Stick to your post-op diet, walk as much as you can, and distract yourself by doing other things. Make a list of non-scale victories (NSV) that you can track or look forward to, like fitting into smaller clothes, being able to sit on a bus/subway seat with enough room for another person to sit beside you (and not touch them!), seeing your collarbones again, being able to fit into smaller/former shoe sizes since your feet may have been too big/swollen from years of being overweight (this was a big one for me), being able to wear heels again without being in pain, not needing a seatbelt extender when flying, etc, etc. You can also make a list of "rewards" or future plans to look forward to. Like, when you lose your first 10 or 20 pounds. 50 pounds. 100 pounds. Making it to "onederland" (under 200 pounds). For example, for me, once I hit goal weight (or near it), I'd really like to do a physical challenge that I really couldn't do before because of my weight (and therefore my knee and back problems). So climbing Kilimanjaro and walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain are two bucket list items that I would like to do once I lose the weight (and save the money) to do so. Having a really great makeover (hair, makeup, clothes, everything) is something else I'd like to do. Another thing to remember is that (I think, for all of us), we didn't gain weight every single day as we were overeating or making poor food choices throughout our lives, it was a gradual, but steady, increase over time. Same with losing weight. It's not going to happen every day in a steady decline. Some days (or weeks! It will happen eventually) the weight may not move at all, or may go up a little. But stick to the plan, try not to fall off the wagon no matter how tempting, and the weight loss will be steady over time. Not every day, but it's happening. -
My Post Op Diet Seems Less Strict Than Most Others
SleeveDreamer replied to Squisha's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow at all the variations! i was on clear liquids for a week with no protein drinks, then full liquids and protein drinks for a week, then pureed and protein drinks for a week, then soft foods for 2 weeks, then regular, but no steak, or bread or pasta til 10 weeks. Sometimes they move you right from clear liquids to pureed and skip the full liquids from what I heard. -
3 week update for those thinking about a revision
hockeyfan7 replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I know that same full feeling - I got that on Saturday when I took one bite too many of the hamburger patty I was eating. I have had no trouble whatsoever with any foods. I went to solids on day 10 with my surgeon and NUT approval. My surgeon did tell me that he only took out about 75% of the stomach because I had scarring at the esophagus from the band and he didn't want to run the risk of leaking at that spot. I haven't thrown up once in 7 weeks. With my band everything was coming back up. Sounds like your experience is similar to mine. -
My insurance (Tufts) required 6 months of diet, 6 nutrition, 6 nurse practitioner visits. 10% of your body weight lost. Once sent in was approved in 5 days surgery date was 3 weeks later!! Good luck!! Sent from my SGH-T999L using the BariatricPal App

I don t have a preop diet either. I just have to stop certain meds 10 days prior to surgery.

For me, walking for 20 minutes after eating relieves a LOT of gas. Also the slower I eat and the smaller the bites I take, the less gas I seem to have. Break your 3-4 bites into even smaller bits. Make it 10-12. Use a baby spoon! It does get better, but the gas thing is just going to be a fact of life for a while after surgery. Most important is to not get discouraged. You are in control of this journey. Focus on Protein, liquid and walking, (or whatever exercise you choose.) Don't focus on the scale. Do what you know you have to do and the results that you want will happen! It will all be worth it in the long run!

Depression After Surgery
Lorraine Freeman replied to allmee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don't worry Nik, as I wrote on another post my 9 year old daughter turned to me on say 5 and said " mummy, you've turned back into a baby cause all you do is cry and drink" lol I promise you this does get better, it lasted about 10 days for me. If people were nice to me.... I cried, if I was upset at something......I cried, if I sneezed...... I cried, you get the gist lol. Come day 10 I was laughing about it with family members. Your body and mind have just gone through a major trauma and it takes time for things to get back to normal but hd on in there it will get better. I thought I would never feel "normal" again, I'm 5 weeks out now and I am honestly fine now. Sending love hugs and tissues to you. Chin up. Xxxxx -

when will i get the hang of this
Sadlers1999 replied to rainbows's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
H2 receptors react with pepcid. Parietal cells react with prilosec. That's the difference, but they are used in a similar way (for similar reasons). Not sure why some doctors prefer one over the other. My sister says that none of these products (including Nexium) were designed for long-term use. If stomach acid is permanently reduced, it can't kill the HARMFUL bacteria that it was meant to kill...leading to other GI problems. Unfortunately, our mother is permanently on Nexium because every time she comes off it, she has reflux. So, my sister knows that some people use these drugs "forever," but we should all be cautious. If you are feeling better, try a day without taking them. Also, while I took a prilosec this morning after more than 7 days of not taking it, I was also eating a few tums in between. I thought the tums helped a little, but I didn't need 10 of them, either. -
I'm a little nervous everyone in my family is now sick. I'm 10 days from surgery and afraid ill get sick too. Any suggestions to make sure I don't get sick and miss my date?
-
Just a quick venting moment... I'm on Day 5467 of the preop diet... okay fine- day 10/14, it just feels like forever. My preop diet is all liquid Protein ONLY. No solids for 14 days. I am ALMOST there, and my surgeon actually advances your diet quickly, so there is an end in sight. BUT I JUST WANT TO CHEW. I've chewed gum and spit it out. I want to crunch something. I miss pickles. Okay I sound crazy, just needed to share!

Today starts my preop diet..exactly 14 days before surgery
lauraellen80 replied to LadyinBlue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 10 of my two-week pre-op diet, and it's been crazy. I've definitely cried a few times. On day 4, I had to lock myself in the bathroom at work to sob and hyperventilate, just overwhelmed by this huge life change. I've had a few thoughts of, "Oh my god... why are you doing this?! Can't you just control your eating like a normal person?!" But the answer is, no, I can't. I've been struggling with my weight and eating since I was about 8. Another round of Weight Watchers is just not going to do it. And I can't keep going like I have been the past few years, gaining weight and having health issues, because I'm only 34 and I can't do half the things that my 61-year-old mother can. I definitely recommend avoiding the grocery store and gatherings with focus on food during the pre-op diet, especially if yours is liquids only. I made the mistake of stopping at the grocery store for a few things last night and almost lost it in the bakery section. I'm finding that I have to keep reminding myself that I will not be on a liquid diet forever! It also helps if you do not have to cook meals for others right now. It's just my husband and me, and thankfully he is very sensitive to my needs and is doing Herbalife shakes while I'm on liquids, eating his "real food" for lunch and having a shake with me at suppertime. -
I would think then your doctor will fill you when? when you aren't losing? what type of diet does he keep you on? I know dr. jay will not fill if you gain 10 lbs, have to show the dedication and follow his strict path.
-
I learned last night at a support group my Dr. does once a month, that this is very common. If we don't gain back more than 10 pounds, there is nothing to worry about. They said after the first fill the stomach opening is tightened again, and we will again be limited to the total amount of food we can eat. That made me feel better. In fact they moved the day of my first fill up - so I don't have to wait too much longer. I will say that after about a week of eating solid foods, I did not feel as hungry, but especially when my Dr. said "EAT/DRINK PROTEIN" and that will stop the stomach growling. He suggested the Atkins drinks - especially in the morning for breakfast. Maybe ya'll can try that!!
