    Self Pay questions

I am looking into going to Mexico and maybe even through this website. However, I am wondering about payment. Unfortunately with past health care bills, I do not have the best credit. Did anyone else have this issue? I am trying to see if any surgeon will take payments for the bulk of the fee before and then the rest after. There is just no way I would be able to have the full payment anytime soon and my weight is becoming a bigger issue since I stopped smoking. Thanks for any advice

    Starting my Journey Need Help!

Hello! I saw the surgen on 8/7 and we have moved on to scheduling all of my appoinments! I am 5’2 and weight 215 with a BMI of 39.6 but because i have OBESITY related issues my DR believes i am a candidate. I am pretty sure ill gain some weight before surgery. Anyways, i am excited and nervous- i am doing this journey along with my husband as well. I had a lapband procedure done 8/2011 but i gained all the weight back and some more, so it was unsuccessful. My only concern right now is that, i take anti-depressants and i read online that Insurances will disqualify you if you take anti depressants meds(which i find ridiculous)... anyone else heard of this?
  5. When I started my surgery my first goal was to get below my lowest weight I could achieve on my own which was 230. After that my goal was to weigh less then my husband 226. Then my goal was to be in Onederland. Once I made it there my goal was to weigh less than my older sister who was always the thin one 185 . Today I have reached my 5th goal 177 pounds. this is the weight I was when I got married ten years ago. My next goal is to get to 150 pounds which is the median range for my height 5'6'' and body frame size of large. So happy with my sleeve.this surgery is awesome. Life is good

    4+ year Vet Starting Over

Don't beat yourself up. Obesity is a multi factorial disease. It is caused by many things. Eating habits, activity level, genetics, gut microbes, hormones and who knows what else. The medical community can't even tell us exactly why weight loss surgery works. We just know that it is the most effective treatment that we have at the moment. Everyone is different. Don't compare yourself with anyone else. I also believe that stress is a big contributor as it affects our hormones and our genes. I still see my bariatric nutritionist at 20 months out and have no plans to stop because we have to be diligent and do everything we can to fight this disease. If you have access to one, I would highly recommend doing that because you are right, there is so much misinformation and information that does not pertain to us out there. Time and time again I have found her information to be spot on. She reels me in back to nutrition and away from the confusion. Also, I have said it before and I still believe that if we get to a point where we feel like we are loosing control, reaching out for psychological help is a good thing. It can't hurt and I've seen many people who said they were so glad they did. You can do this.
  7. I had my surgery yesterday and felt okay immediately after. Day two and it's excruciating. Can't stop crying and feeling as if this was the biggest mistake ever. Oh, and I've gained 8 pounds despite having eaten nothing in three days. Someone tell me it will get better...I keep wondering if I should go back to the hospital or if this is normal. I never expected to be in so much pain after reading other people's experiences.
  8. Thank you all for your replies. I was a self-pay so, insurance is not a worry. It really seems to be rather straight forward. I've injected and drawn from many types of ports. Right now I feel like I've never had surgery. I know I'm underfilled but my surgeon is stuck on these 0.5ml fills once a month. I don't see myself losing any weight for several months down the road. I paid a lot of money for this surgery and I would kinda like to have it work.
  9. I had my band for seven years and always did my own fills and I am not medically trained my mums a nurse and she taught me. I only did it because my port was below the rib cage and very close to the surface of the skin. To be honest a monkey could do it on my port. However it does come with a lot of temptations so If you are going to do it I would suggest that you draw up a sensible schedule and stick to it or you may find your self in trouble with filling too often or over filling or even worse keeping a too tight band to lose weight quicker which Is a sure fire way to get severe acid reflux and slips. My band slipped due to pregnancy but I believe that the terrible acid reflux came from keeping my band over tight.

    Appealing Aetna

I was denied by Aetna and we very frustrated because the insurance said My sleep apnea was not severe enough to warrant surgery. With a BMI well over 40 for over two years, my surgeon believed it would be a simple peer to peer to explain the apnea was irrelevant. I was again denied. When I received my letter it stated my BMI had not been over 40 for two years. This baffled me, the insurance gave me dates of service when my bmi was 35-37 then 43, the following month. This didn't make sense to me as I know I have not lost any weight over the last few years. So I asked my doctors(gp) office to research. It turns out that there is another patient in the office with the same name and she is 5 inches taller. On two occasions they entered my height incorrectly! I am hoping with the new information, my appeal will go though. I am posting because I was ready to give up. I may still be denied, but not without a fight. Thank you everyone who told me to fight, question, and keep calling (insurance and docs office)till I get someone who will help.
  12. I am a former patient of his. I cancel ed my surgery at the last moment. YES Jason the. patient advocate has no business working with people, his personality is horrible. Yes they do treat you like cattle because weight loss is a money making business.
  13. I did not start near that weight, and if I was I would not have needed the VSG I am 5' 10" and was 338 at the start of my journey. Ok now that has been said and please don't think that I am being condescending because that is the farthest thing from my intention, I just wanted to let you know where I started! It is completely understandable that you are scared but trust me you will be fine in the end. You need to fasten your seatbelt my dear because this is going to be one heck of a ride! I am almost a year out and you can check my profile for the amount of weight that I have lost. I feel absolutely AMAZING and wish that I would have done this MUCH SOONER, if I did then there are several health issues that I would not have had to deal with! What I did to prepare myself is exactly what you are doing, searching boards, looking at Youtube videos and doing serious research online. Just know that there are things that you are going to have to give up like soda, but in the long run it will be more than worth the small and temporary discomfort that you will go through. Another way that I prepared myself was starting on a high protein and low carb diet. That will be essential to long term results, it will lead to long term results. Please do not sweat the procedure the worst time that I have had with it was the one week following surgery, after that it was smooth sailing! This is a process, and even though it is moving pretty fast you come out on the other side half the woman you are now and have a smile on your face that very few things will turn into a frown! Your confidence will increase, as your waistline decreases! Good luck and please report back with your progress!

Who did you tell/talk to before

Well I didn't really talk to anyone about it seriously until after I'd made the decision. This is something I had been "dreaming" about for several years, started thinking seriously about when a friend went through it about 18 months ago and lost really well and just kicked around in the back of my mind until about mid last year. I went back to my GP for "one last ditch effort" on a new weight loss drug, but after about 2 weeks on that, I was easily able to eat past any effect the drug had. I was feeling really low one afternoon thinking about how my weight was so out of control and had been for so long; how my new job on the mines was giving me everything I wanted in terms of material things but was putting me into temptations way so badly with the camp food that I had gained nearly 50lb in 18months. Last October I searched on the net for weight-loss surgery and stumbled over this site and spent the next several days furiously reading everything in it! My decision was made on the first day - I wanted the band and I wanted it right NOW! I made the decision, called my GP to set up an appointment to get the referral to the surgeon and that was that. I didn't tell anyone until I had the appointment set with the surgeon (Nov) and since then I've been telling anyone and everyone! My surgery was in Dec and I am loving what I have done for myself. My suggestion would be to read, read and read some more. Talk to people, preferably those who have had some experience with it. Yes, the surgery has an element of danger - read the Complications threads and become familiar with them. Think about how the chance of complications compares with the chance of ill health as a result of your weight - which is more likely? Yes, it can be expensive if you are self-pay (I am), but what is the cost of good health, both physical and mental? How much will you save in the long run? For me, it is absolutely worth it. Yes, it takes effort to maintain and work the band. I've not had a lot of success in the past with anything that requires a long sustained effort. However, the beauty of the band is such that even if one "falls off the wagon", you can pick yourself up later and get another fill and get back on track. I'm very confident this time round that I have made the right decision. Good luck in making your decision.

Who did you tell/talk to before

I've told only a few friends and family members. Some comments have been negative which I am learning to deal with instead of it making me defensive. I have a few points of fact for them next time. The savings.... you can think of it this way. You'll be saving any out of pocket costs you may have in the future dealing with any comoridities associated with obesity. I read here somewhere about food bills being greatly reduced. That's incentive:). The toll on your family? They will GAIN from this, gain years more living and loving you.

Who did you tell/talk to before

I didnt tell my co-worker until I lost alot of noticable weight... not like they need to know. told family and best friend.. they had no problem.
  17. Where do I put cute little my weight counter in my profile so that it shows up with my posts?
  18. Don't worry, you're doing fine. Froggi is right, you may gain weight during this phase. Unfortunately, this is the time we call "bandster hell!" First you think you'll never make the 10 days of Clear liquids, then you think you'll never make it through the time of full liquids (mine was three weeks) and then mushies - you might feel like you don't know what to eat, but you'll figure it out. Keep coming here for support and go to any local support groups that you can. If your surgeon specializes in lap-band, call the office and talk to the staff. Just remember - it's perfectly normal to not lose during this time - and many gain weight. Keep your calories between 800 and 1000. If you're exercising (later - after you're healed), you'll also need to figure out how many cals you're burning and factor them in: for example, you've burned 200 calories, and eaten 800 - you're still short calories - you'll need to eat 200 more calories to make the 800 total. Anything less and you're body goes into starvation mode and you won't lose at all! Best of luck. I promise that you won't regret your decision! Barbara
  19. Thanks guys! Glad I'm not alone. I've been feeling like I'm starving myself and working out too but still gaining weight. Barbara9460: Thanks for the quick calorie cout lesson. I did not know that if I eat 800 calories...etc. It's just so hard to do a calorie count since most of the things that I eat are not listed anywhere on the internet (dailyplate.com, etc). I'm Asian so many things I eat and make will not be listed. Also, our main staple are rices, starches, carbs, etc! So frustrating!
  20. Anyone else? Pre-op diet starts this Thursday! I am so nervous and excited! I have three boys (7,5, 10 months) and I'm most scared of a surgical complication. I am looking to lose around 150 pounds. I'm 6'0 tall and have always carried a lot of hidden weight. In 2009-2010 I lost over 100 pounds on my own, but I have gained a little more than half back. So ready to get it off and keep it off!

My journey to the new me...

Well, after 10 or so months of thinking about surgery, I have decided that I am going to do it. I have spent many many hrs researching to learn as much as I could before I made a decision. I've spent 20 hrs or so on this site, reading about other peoples journeys and decided it's time that I join them. I am lucky, my family is extremely supportive and so is my man. I have no intentions of telling anyone else for the time being. I don't feel like it's anyone elses business. I have tried everything I know to try on my own: WW, Jenny Craig, Transformations, low carb, low calorie, low fat, no sugar, the cabbage soup diet, the liquid protein diet, the 6 week body makeover, apple cider vinegar diet, you get the idea. Do I lose weight on those diets? Sure I do but I can't keep it off. I excercise 5-6 days a week for an hour to an hour and a half at a time and manage to tone up some but no real weight loss. I don't eat fried food, cheese or many of the other things that I know are so bad for you like bacon. I eat more fruit in a week then most people I know do in a month. Bottom line....I'm tired of being fat. My highest weight ever was about 385 (several yrs ago), I lost down to about 325 (where I am now). I have managed to keep that 60 lbs off but every other pound I've lost since then have always put back on up to that 325 mark. For someone as overweight as I am, I am still a very active person, for example this last year I bought a house that needed some work as the yard was in horrible shape. During the summer of 07 I dug up and hauled off railroad ties that were suck in 4 ft of concrete, tore down a shed piece by piece, but up a new privay fence, crawled up on my roof and patched it, tore off an extension over the back porch, rented a jackhammer to bust up concrete, hauled off said concrete (about 6,000 lbs of it), laid a flat of sod (you get the idea), I'm not a lazy person but as I was doing all of these things I just kept thinking how much easier it would be if I didn't weigh 300+ pounds. So, I began weighing (no pun intended) my options and begin making a list of the pro's and con's as well as a list of goals. The pro's outnumberd the con's by 2 to 1 at least so I begin my research. I have decided I have nothing to lose. I go to my seminar at the surgery place on Feb 2nd and I am excited. Also a little scared but I know that's normal. This is going to be a huge change. I know other people have felt the same way and they have come through it okay but you never really know how they felt until you've been through it yourself. So...hang on, it's going to be a wild ride....

    head hunger or physical???

I can't eat in the morning due to my pills getting stuck though I have an Unjury shake. I get really, really hungry about 2 p.m. so I have breakfast. I don't seem to have head hunger. I'm really hungry. So I eat breakfast at 2-3 p.m. and then dinner at about 6-7 and then I'm hungry about 3-4 hours later so I snack late at night. I eat nuts, cheese and protein except for the ice cream cone I have every night. I love that ice cream cone. I don't care if it's fattening. But that may explain why I lost 40 pounds and stopped. I have weighed the same for a year--no further weight loss. I figure it cost me about $250 per pound so far. I'd really like to lose 10 more pounds so it will only have cost me $200. But on the bright side, I only take 1/2 of my diabetes pill now. If I take a whole one, my blood sugar drops too much. Things are better.

    I'm baaackk

Three weeks of stuffed and aching ears has put a big crimp in my weight loss plans. Eating all the wrong stuff and no exercise. BUT -I'm off all the drugs the doctors gave me and II'm ready to start hitting curves. My immediate goal -the 220's are evil i dont want to be associated with them anymore, I shall run through then with th grace and speed of a gazelle.
