First Appointment
liveaboard15 replied to simplysmile's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My first appointment was about 5 minutes long. They weighed me, Took me to a room where a nurse went thru the paperwork and lab test that i brought from my medical record and asked me some questions, Surgeon came in after, explained what gastric sleeve surgery was and quickly read over the nurses notes and that was it. Got a binder with information on the steps needed to complete (Nutrition class, Support group, Psyc Eval) and in the mail a week later i got my lab orders and imaging orders to do. -
Determining Goal Weight
catwoman7 replied to suzannethemom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do exercise - I'm not a gym rat, but I always tried to exercise 5-6 days a week. At first it was mostly walking and water aerobics, since I was too heavy to do much of anything else. I still do those - but I also now do Zumba and bicycling as well. I've also strength-trained off and on (twice a week) - but unfortunately not consistently because I don't really like it. But I recently started using resistance bands, which I like a lot more than the weight machines at my gym - so hopefully I'll keep up with it this time! as for calories, by the end of the first year, I was up around 1000 per day. Second year I was eating around 1200 until I hit maintenance at 20 months out. I then experimented with different ranges to determine my "maintenance range", which is 1500-1700 per day. As long as I stay within that range, I can maintain my weight. But of course that's going to vary for everyone depending on how much muscle you have, how active you are, etc. I know some women who have to eat around 1200 to maintain, and others who can eat 2000.... -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
Guest replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Had a few of these recently and it's nice to remember it's happening: Showered at the gym (open stalls) - that was a bit of a process because I look pretty buff with my gym clothes on (arms and legs muscular and no loose skin, decent chest definition that's noticeable in a t-shirt), but my torso and the place I sit on look melted without clothes. But I did it. And nobody looked. Freedom. Got hit on by two girls in IKEA. In fact, I had to ask them if I could help them with something as they were staring uncomfortably long, and I've gotten pretty aware of that, having been fat for a long time. They giggled and one said 'oh we just thought you were cute hee-hee'. Oh. Oooh. I am honestly still reminded whenever two things happen: I need to tie my shoelaces or I need to sit on some flimsy chair. What a relief it is to simply ... bend down and tie those damn shoes! And if a chair breaks (thankfully, it never really happened), it's not my fault anymore. I have a 10-hour flight coming up and I've been lucky to get a business seat. Can't wait to feel how nice the extra space is, compared to before when it was absolutely necessary to pay 6x for a seat in the front to fit me. -
February 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery is also on the 17ht! I’ve ordered my vitamins, sugar free ice pops and protein shakes. I start my 2 week liquid/ modification site in the 2nd. -
I stalled every second week for the first two months, and the stalls sometimes lasted two weeks. then I'd get one week of weight loss before the next stall. That you made it a whole ten weeks before a stall is really impressive! As others have said - you just have to ride it out while sticking to the program. There's no one rule for how long stalls last, they just last as long as your body needs them to. They're frustrating and boring, but they do break.

9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(
vikingbeast replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you're only eating 1000 calories at 9 months out, maybe try bumping that up to 1200 calories for two weeks and see how you do. (You're not going to "balloon"—200 extra calories a day for 14 days is about 0.8 lbs, if bodies were machines.) -
9 months post op, weight loss stopped :(
Michele 2021 replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi there I’m exactly where you are I’ve been in a 3 month stall from months 6-9 and haven’t lost a single pound although I am about 12 lbs from where my goal was. This is however frustrating as I am eating under 1000 calories exercising 60 minutes daily by walking… the only thing I’ve slowed down on is my water intake which is about 42 oz a day. I’m wondering if this is the reason my weight has stalled…or perhaps it’s due to my exercise since I’m only walking but I do average 3 miles a day. They do say the closer you get to your goal it can literally stop…but this is a very frustrating feeling to have especially since my surgeon said after the one year point the weight loss generally stops…. -
My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

It is tough I had to cook meals every day for my husband and two sons while i was on liquid and soft stage it was so so hard i just had to keep reminding myself i didnt want to injury my surgery line in my tummy. My son had his birthday and they got cheesecake during that time I did taste it about a pinkie nail amount and got really really ill. I sont know if you can get your hands on crushed ice but if you get some crystal light and put it over crushed ice and chew on that ice it does help woth cravings and the need to chew something. I was on liquids for a month before surgery so for two months i was fixing yummy stuff for my family while i couldnt touch it. Good news is pretty soon it just stopped bothering me. It will get better just stay strong. I feel, my husband agrees, I’m more happy and mellow since surgery. Ill be 6 weeks out Tuesday. -
how high is it? Mine is almost always above the normal range, and the surgeon just shrugs. I guess it depends on HOW high it is. I'll check my chart and update this in a minute well, the last three years it's been 69, 111, and 205. I'm pretty sure it's been over 200 in earlier years - I'll check. OK. For some reason, only the last three years were on the graph - but I manually looked back on my chart for earlier years. It was always over 200 until I hit that 69 in 2019 - which was surprising because it'd always been in the 200s. But it started going up again in 2020 (to that 111 reading) - and now back in the 200s. High end of the range for women is 200 - so mine usually runs a little above normal. They never said anything about it, so.. if they feel yours is too high, they'll probably have you cut back on your iron supplementation

Anyone have high ferritin on lab work? What did you have to do? Just wondering because my doctors appointment is a few weeks away.

I am 18 months post-op and have had several stalls. It’s quite common, and can happen at any time.

So I’m at the point where my hormones are definitely starting to change. I’m irritable and really seeing the fact that I have zero support from my mom or sister and that I’m in this alone. All I want to do today is chew on something- I think we all have this day. It has nearly been 3 weeks since I have had any sort of real food and I’m emotional about it. My mother does this thing where she takes all of her calls on speaker phone even when watching tv with someone else. This morning she was talking to her friend about the dinner her friend was making for some dinner party. This afternoon she and my sister were talking about what each of them was going to have for dinner- and it’s not even that I’m hungry- it’s just the thought of being able to chew real food sounds so good. -

Most everybody gets the infamous Week 3 Stall. You're lucky it waited until Week 10. It might last a month or longer, so don't lose hope and just keep doing what you're doing and this too shall pass, I promise.

I am 9-days from my surgery date. I am set to start the 7-day liquid diet on Tuesday, but I'm starting tomorrow. I do better when I start fresh for the week. I am very anxious about this next week, any advice?

COMPLETELY fallen off the wagon :(
Sunshine0331 replied to JazzyJess20's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This TOTALLY happened to me! The good news is that the wagon is still there. You’re WORTH it!!!! Don’t give up. Stop/drop/roll - call your dietician immediately! 🙂. I waited 3 months because I was embarrassed. Had my 1 year surgery follow up. Was so nervous - I put myself in a total panic and broke down crying. The surgeon kindly laughed and was like you LOST 97 Pounds - that’s 77.8% of your EWL. He explained that EWL is the Excess Weight Loss. Ask for your percentage. He said that as a surgeon, they anticipate/ hope that in 18 months you lose 75%. The dietician came in who I’ve been in amazing contact with until I stalled. I was embarrassed. I haven’t lost a pound in 3 months. We talked - came up with a solution and it’s working. They see this ALL the time. It’s not a personal failure. They will help if you ask- I promise. You’ve got this!!!!! You’re amazing and so is your body!!!! Everyone’s journey is different. Have you heard of Unjury? They have an amazing viritual support group and bring in incredible professionals to chat about stuff like this. register for the Wednesday nights (you can do both - but Wednesday night is for post op) - https://unjury.com/newsletters/join-the-best-support-group-now-for-best-results/ You’ll see me there - Christina B. Say ‘hi’- you’ll feel so loved and supported. You’re not alone in this! -
most people get that stall at or around the three-week mark - so it's late for you. Don't do anything besides stick to your program and stay off the scale (only weigh yourself once a week or so until you get through this). It'll break and you'll be on your way again. Since they typically last 1-3 weeks, you're likely near the end of it.

I am 10weeks post op. I have been strict about measuring my food, getting my protein/vitamins and I workout 4 days a week. I have been stuck at 189 for 3 weeks and I'm feeling like I'm failing. I have been thinking about going back down to 2oz of protein per meal but I'm really trying to avoid unhealthy choices. Idk what to do. I have another 40lbs to my goal and I'm terrified I won't make it [emoji17][emoji17]. Sent from my GM1917 using BariatricPal mobile app

Anyone in MINNESOTA?
suzannethemom replied to suzannethemom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have severe GERD also, which is why I chose RNY gastric bypass. I don’t have a surgery date yet. I have 5 appointments scheduled in the next two weeks (dietitian, exercise PT, Psych eval, upper GI). You’re so lucky to get the Mayo Clinic. I’m nervous that as I’m getting all these important steps done, the hospital decides to pause elective surgeries. I just heard that Allina canceled WLS for three months! -
My husband doesn't want me to have surgery
huskymama replied to Wickerbuni's topic in The Gals' Room
Hope all went well! My husband of 20 years, been together almost 21 years, was nit supportive of it at all but once he knew it was happening like it or not he became better. He stayed with me the entire time at the hospital and took a week off to take care of me. He isnt thrilled with the scars from the surgery but other than that he is beyond what i could have hoped for from him in support now. I like what Tek said, the strong relationships get stronger and i believe that ti be true. He is my best friend as well as my spouse and i feel we are stronger than we have ever been. -
Anyone's primary doctor was against the operation?
gabbykittyvsg replied to Starky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The primary doc I had at the time of my vsg was totally against it, at first but wasn't supportive either. I saw her in the hallway at the hospital the day after surgery and she said"you know you didn't really need the surgery". I'm not sure what my current primary thinks about my upcoming surgery but I'll find out when I go in for my pre-op physical in 2 weeks. This surgery (conversion to bypass) is necessary because of damage done by reflux so she can't really say much. I had another endoscopy done yesterday and the report noted the need for surgical intervention to fix the reflux. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app -
COMPLETELY fallen off the wagon :(
Arabesque replied to JazzyJess20's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Life happens, we get complacent, say tomorrow I’ll get back on track, ... I’d say many of us would put our hand up & say yep, we’ve been where you are in some way or another. Knowing why you’re not losing is the first step. Making the changes is the next step. Even making one change today is a start. I agree with the posters above: get back onto your plan & track, meet your protein & fluid goals, watch portion sizes & calories. Make an appointment with your dietician too. Have to admit I was surprised that you only have an annual check up with your surgeon & you’re not even a year post surgery & not at goal. I know all surgeons are different but I still see my surgeon or his support doctor every three months (though as I approach my three yr anniversary we’re trying 4 months). Still have regular blood tests too. Maybe ask for more frequent appointments with your surgeon & dietician. They are supposed to be there to support & encourage you & ensure you’re keeping healthy. All the best. -
I see post on here almost weekly about people getting pregnant soon after surgery. Saw one a couple weeks ago that they were only like a month out. Try using the search box at the top of the page and type in Pregnant. It will show you a bunch of topics regarding it. Some info for you until some people reply to this post Good luck.

I've Started Doing Workouts with a Personal Trainer
Jaye W replied to GradyCat's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Great to hear! keep up the good work. I have worked with a trainer in the past but prefer to just do the workouts on my own. You will learn the exercises and how to mix it up on your own. I go to Planet Fitness- only $10/month and personal training is free if you want it. I have been consistently weightlifting at least 5 days per week since late Summer/Fall of 2021 after fully recovering from gall bladder removal and I think it has made a great difference in how my clothes fit, how my arms/legs/stomach skin looks and how I feel overall.
