I got the hiccups alot after my first fill, even on full liquids. Hiccups are also my "soft stop" signal. I agree that you might wait it out a week and see if the swelling from your brutal fill goes down. I also agree that you should be able to eat solids without PBing (following the bandster rules of eating, that is) Wow, it's good to have you here! Keep us posted!

Please someone tell me that they have experienced this hair loss! I started out with really thick hair. I would say now it looks thin. My hair falls out in such record numbers that I have to carry around a lint roller at all times. I was banded last November and the hair loss started around 6 months after. Will it stop? I drink a Protein shake everyday. I think I am getting enough protein. Will it grow back? Don't even get me started on this stupid site kicking me off for the last 3 weeks. I had to open a yahoo account just to log back on. I didn't even want a yahoo account! Christine

I have been told 4-6 weeks, but just via email. I know what you mean, as I really want my surgery towards the beginning of the summer holidays because of childcare. I went for a consultation at Healthier Weight last week and they could do it the following week, so it's tempting. Although in the long run waiting another month and having the right surgeon and aftercare I reckon is the more sensible option.... Keep me posted on what you decide x katie

I am allowed to have them, but I only drink one or two a week, if I have them around. I like them, but there's not much in them (more calories than anything), and they don't do anything for my hunger.

I too was able to have the protein water. I had to coax the protein shakes down ounce by ounce in the beginning. I think for the first week it just important to get as much water and protein as you can handle. I didn't strees about exact amounts so much as making sure i got SOME. This will all get better over the next week or so. Hang in there.

Newbie here I'd love some advice on my situation

There are three Centers of Excellence in the Chicago area, one in Evanston, in the city itsself and one in Oakpark. These are hospitals with excellent reputations and well trained staffs. If you can, give one of them a call and I can almost guarantee you a great experience. (I grew up in Naperville). -
Post Lap Band Diet
Cindysmom (Ilene) replied to georgia247's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes it is gas. keep walking it will help. Have you taken "gas x?" Yep you are and should stay on a liquid diet. I enjoyed Vegetable, beef and chicken broth. Jello Tea and water. Etc. YOu will do fine and I congratulate you on your surgery and your trip to a healthy life style. I would imagine that your Dr's office provided you with a week by week menu. Many times, we don't think they do so we do not look at the paper work given to us. Since you have not eatten in a while. Please becareful and don't over do the pain pills. You will become constipated. You will be very unhappy if you do. You might want to purchase stool softners. Sooner than later. At this time you have to be KIND to your area. Take your time and think about how you want to exercise and get ready to learn how to eat again the lapband way. I am hoping that you will not dwell on FOOD all the time. Think about other things as you go foward in your journey. Make friends, read books, measure your body, do not eat that bread. You might want to buy a book for your low carb and high protein program. remember to chew your food slowly. hugs. -
It is kind of a long story. Shortened version is I was contemplating having my band removed due to complications. I kind of freaked out at the thought of actually losing my band so I recommitted HARD CORE. I have PCOS, so sugar and carbs are a HUGE no no. So I radicaly changed my diet... and started following the band rules best I could with a wonky band. (I just had surgery last week to repair a hiatal hernia and reposition it). I measure measure measure. I stop when my portion is done. I cut out carbs and sugar as best I could. I eat real food, and stay away from processed as much as possible. I went back to a Protein shakes for Breakfast. I started swimming for exercise since a foot injury restricted my options. Typical day: Breakfast: Either Protein Drink, or Chobani yogurt w/Kashi Go Lean Crunch mixed in. Lunch: Left overs usually from dinner. Taco salad is my favorite lunch. (chopped spinach, seasoned ground turkey, mango salsa, cheese) Dinner: 4 oz of protein (Salmon & scallops are favorites) with 1/2 cup green veggies. Asparagus is my favorite. I try and avoid snacking... but if i do get a little hunger I snack on string cheese, or a skinned apple with Peanut Butter, or a few almonds or pistachios. I have been on liquids for almost 2 weeks since I just had surgery last week... so that has helped too. My best advice is really stick to the rules! It is hard. Head hunger is a nasty nasty b***h. I hate her. I fight head hunger A LOT. I just keep living day by day and hoping that if I can string enough good days together I will get there. My journey has been long with a lot of ups and downs. I am looking forward to getting fills and restriction back. I can get my first fill in 3 more weeks. I hope I can keep losing during this restriction free time.

Thanks, everyone. Please do not get me wrong, I do love the band, and am happy to put up with some tightness. I was just surprised by difference from week to week.
-
Gcravener, I have to say that if you're having reflux and PBing all the time you probably are too tight. It's accepted wisdom that being too tight can lead to weight gain just as easily as weight loss, because the patient stays away from the healthier (harder to eat) foods and gravitates toward softer foods. Finding the right spot with the band is not necessarily an easy thing. You've only been banded for three months and many, many people don't get to the "sweet spot" right off the bat. I'd suggest an unfill immediately and that you then take a careful look at what you are eating. Fitday.com is a great tool to help you track your actual calories in and out, which might be enlightening all by itself. Being too tight is NOT the way to banding success. Please consider having an unfill and getting a fresh start. Banding can't possibly work if you're fighting with it all the time, and you may even do yourself some damage along the way. You may want to start a new thread with your experience and see what other bandsters have to offer. I'm sure there are other people in your shoes who can benefit from a discussion about it. Welcome to LBT!!

I finally have some restriction, but I'm following back into bad habits. I have good restriction in the a.m., but once I eat something I'm hungry and I want to eat every couple of hours. Do you snack? Stick to three meals a day? What kind of schedule do you follow? Have you experienced this hunger. I've done pretty good until now on will power, but now I'm losing it.

Really, Folks It starts to get better after the first fill and it gets a little better with each consecutive fill. Hopefully, your band docs will be agressive - or you will get filled under flouro - which might help you get good restriction sooner. Right now, particularly if you have the big Vanguard band, it isn't doing a thing for you. It's the rare lucky soul who gets restriction right out of the box. The rest of us just have to slog through that 2-3 weeks of pre-op type starvation until we start getting fills. So long as you don't go completely insane and start eating EVERYTHING you can reach, you should be ok. You are still healing - so try to take it easy, and definitely DON'T eat till you're stuffed - but if you eat more than a cup or whatever fantasy serving size your doc gave you - don't panic. It will be ok. Let it ride until you start getting fills - and keep demanding fills until you get restriction. ***WATER is important. The only way I get close to enough is to drink in the car on my way to and from work. I try to drink a litre bottle each way and drink addl water throughout the day. Sip, Sip, Sip. The only downside to great restriction is that you really can't guzzle water anymore. You have to sip and pause, sip and pause. Good Luck!!!

What do you do at social events?
GayleTX replied to lapbandmexico's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
On the other hand........don't know when your surgery was, but notice you just joined the board in May. If you are just a few weeks out, you may be limited in what you can eat. Don't try eating anything in public that you have not already tried in the privacy of your own home.....it can ruin your party if it's something you can't handle (chicken being one of the common culprits:scared2:). Eat at least 30 min or so before you go so you won't be hungry and tempted to eat things there that might cause a problem. Be sure you drink before you eat anything then quit during your meal.....and don't drink for 30-40 min. after eating...if you get your pouch full and then try to drink, it may come back up. Nibble around, think of something interesting to talk about and have a good time. Parties have got to become about more than food.........something many of us (like me!) are learning late in life! -
Ok so my husband is a professional chef...I was a foods and nutrition major in college. I"m about 2 1/2 weeks post op and am doing great with the mushies..did fine with the liquid phase and am looking forward to the soft stage. We were thinking about starting a personal chef service to help post op bariatic patients with the 1st stages diet. I have seen so many complain about the post op diet we have been making some great tasting meals we tought it may help some who struggle with ideas and taste. So would you pay for someone to cook for you?

anybody else who had lapband w/ plication
plumpdude replied to yaya77nc's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Had it on the 15th of august. Doing pretty good Im almost all healed up already after 1 week and 3 days. I did 15 mins on stairmaster today too. I lost almost 13 pounds already because I am still on all liquid diet. Its not easy to eat like this but I only have a week and a few days left of liquids. First couple days after surgery were the toughest pain wise but the pain killers worked good. -
Yeah, the holidays are a killer. I've gained 4 pounds since Thanksgiving. UGH...... I have to say, the sodium seems to be a part of it. I haven't gotten up in the morning with swollen fingers in MANY months. Have several times since Thanksgiving. Alcohol seems to be my pit fall. Spiced rum, and extra wine will get you every time. I've been good about limiting the Christmas cookies. But stuff like potatoes and gravy???? Hard to resist. Slacked off on the exercise as well. I know where I'll be next week!!! LOL

Hi everyone! I was just banded last week and everything has been going well so far until day 4 when I am now experiencing problems drinking the protein shakes I was on pre-op. After even a few ounces I feel so full I could explode, get sharp pain in my chest over the upper incision point (heartburn?). I have not had this problem with other clear liquids thus far, even jello or popsicles. When I feel this pain I also feel it intensify if I breathe deeply. I am making them with milk, could it just be that I'm not ready for this yet or something else. I am now having to take mylanta for the heartburn pain which I have never had before in my life. I havent even been taking the percocets for the last two days because there is only mild pain otherwise, but this is stronger. Anyone out there have a similar problem so soon post op? Should I wait it out and continue the meds for a few more days?

Surgery At One Hospital, Post-Op Care In Another?
Missy281 replied to Missy281's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
@stephyanders -- Thanks! That's good to know. But do you know if that includes the "screening" appointments? When you come in and meet with a dietician/nutritionist (and get your diet for the next 2 weeks all settled and everything), psychologist, and surgeon (I know you meet with him before your surgery, but I think it's also important to meet with him earlier than that too) -- don't those appointments kind of get spread out over the course of a month before your surgery is even scheduled? Again, thanks so much for your help! -
Oh DeLarla!! thats sad. I also went to a "specialist" for eating and she told me to join WW b/c her mom did it and I should be able to do it too. When I told her I was doing Atkins she bashed the living crap out of it. Then 3 weeks later she said, you know, maybe you should try a low carb diet "DUH" I said "well, its obvious that you are not listening to me and its obvious that you don't know what the heck an eating disorder is." I walked out and never went back. What a dumb little girl she was. I'll say it a 1,000 times. Having that degree on the wall doesn't make you smart. Anyway, the nutritionalist wasn't 90 lbs. Actually she had a little meat on her She was very nice and told me that I didn't look like I qualified for the surgery, I wasn't big enuf. I thanked her and then steped on the scale to prove her wrong. Her eyes got as big as golf balls LOLOL !!!! NEXT..........................

That Is Not Much Room Left. I Had To Vomit Episodes This Week After The Fill. I Was Eating Vetetable Soup And Some Got Stuck. I Was Able To Go And Make It Come Up. The Same Last Night With Some Cookies. I Am Terribly Hungry Today And Do Not Want To Stop Eating. I Am A Stress Eater And Have Had Some Hard Times With My Job. Any Suggestion Would Be Appreciated. I Feel Like Such A Failure. Thanks Kathy

Kathy, Are you going to get another Fill this Thurs??? Are you sure? Why are they pumping in every week??? Try letting your fill work. It usually takes me about 2-3 weeks to see if a fill is perfect and let any swelling go down. I just think that having all those fills in a short time isn't good, just my opinion. And if you are having hard times now, you will be absolutely miserable with another .6 cc's. I am not a doctor, but I think you should let your fill you have now settle in a bit. -
Hello Everyone! I go in for my consult tommorrow. I have had great success in the past with Atkins and because I have had gestational diabetes in all three of my pregnancies and have a family history of diabetes, I know that a low carb diet is best for me. Are there any bandsters out here on Atkins or simply low carbing? I noticed many people discussing calories and cups and I just can't understand any of that. On Atkins we are taught not to worry so much about the calories or the amounts (non carb). The portion conytrol kicked in with keytosis and I did fine but for 7 years now I have been pregnant and/or nursing and find it difficult to low carb without being in ketosis. i am hooping that afdter being banded the portion control will not be a problem, but what about the cravings for high carn indulgences?

I had 30 days of "last meals" and enjoyed every minute of it. I ate everything that was not nailed down and the weird thing was, I did not gain a pound. The clear liquid diet was for a week prior to surgery and I wanted to make sure I had all I wanted before that time came. I failed to realize that I really didn't need all those last meals. Everthing i ate before surgery, i can have today, just not all at one time. I cna have a steak, bread, salad, and dessert, just not all in one meal. Today I have to pick and choose what I really want to eat and then feel free to have a taste of whatever I wish. The key is now it is just a taste. If I forget and overindulge, my band reminds me. Sometimes it really sucks but it is about the greater good. I ate everything for over 30 years and I feel okay giving up a few things to be healthy. It's not a bad trade off.

Oh gosh Brandy, tell me about it. They have been monitoring me and I have been having weigh-ins, so I have been good for about 1 1/2 months. Now that I know my surgery is next week...I've been a piggy wiggly for the last few days. Darn Easter candy...lol... They call it the Last Supper Syndrome and I was warned about it at the clinic last week. They told me "try to be good"....lol. I had my little treats, now it's back to business..You really want to lose as much as you can prior to surgery if you can. I know..it's hard!! :rolleyes

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p>I was banded March 13 2008 </o:p> Ok so when I was last at the doctors I told them that I had been feeling extremely tire and have also been bruising easily and craving ice.<o:p></o:p> So they did some blood work which they got back yesterday.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Turns out that my Iron count is very low. <o:p></o:p> Before anyone asks<o:p></o:p> I take Centrum Chewable which has Iron every day.<o:p></o:p> I also take b12 daily and biotin.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I also eat protein at each meal and eat spinach and Broccoli every day. All which are iron rich.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> So now they want me to start taking an iron supplement.
